My wife, Gerri, and I have sold our home in SDV and will be moving to Carson City, Nevada. In fact, as you read this, we are living there now. I would like to say to you that it has been an honor and privilege to represent this wonderful community first as the Chairperson of the Finance Advisory Committee for four years and then as a Member of the SDV Board for the past two years. I have learned so much from many of you and have appreciated your kind words, suggestions and support. A special thanks to Leeanne Brock, our Board President, for her guidance and counsel and her many years of dedicated, efficient and sincere service to SDV. She is a major reason why this HOA is so successful, well managed and financially healthy. Also a special thanks to Al Boucher for his counsel, friendship and for being my mentor. He has served this Community as a Board Member for six years and has established many Clubs and Groups. He is truly a Founding Father of SDV. He and his wife Grace continue to question actions for our benefit. Thank you to all of the Volunteers, Committee Members, Groups and Club Members and to Management and Staff for your hard work and dedication. SDV is successful because we all care and we work as a Team. Based on my observations, we are fortunate to have the PCM Staff, specifically: 1. Greg Rainier, General Manager, and action person with a “can do” attitude, knowledgeable, and we are lucky to have him as our leader, 2. Connie King, Lifestyle Director, combines happiness, humor, health and heart with excellent human relation skill; she contributes to our fun, 3. Diana Floyd, very efficient and effective 4. Gabe, watch this young man – also a “can do” personality, he will be a super star Dorina Blythe, GranDesigns Kevin Walker, Arrow Printing 5. Brenda, she is a fantastic compliment to this great Community, always a smile and a heart of gold – she is a jewel. There’s always been a start and finish to every school year and in between years are different faces but all with the same hopes and dreams. Featured here is the class of 1903. Hancock McClung Johnston, son of Civil War Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnston who died at Shiloh April 6, 1862 who was owner of Big Springs Ranch on south side of valley and one of 5 original owners of Lake Hemet Co. & Hemet Land Co. Pictured with are wife Mary, seated, L-R Albert Sydney Johnston III, Hancock McClung Johnston Jr., Mary Hancock Johnston, and John Griffin Johnston. Photo taken between 1886-1888. Hemet incorporated in 1910 and almost immediately set about establishing a library as the cornerstone of the newly formed community. Mr. & Mrs. James St. John donated two lots at the corner of Florida Avenue & Buena Vista Street. A grant was secured from the Carnegie Fund and the Carnegie Library was completed December 24, 1912. It was demolished in 1969 and replaced at the same location by the C.B. Covell library in December, 1971 which is now used by City of Hemet Fire Administration. 8 The View | September 2015 On July 28th, 16 women from Solera Diamond Valley traveled to the east side of Hemet for an afternoon formal tea. The tea took place at the private home of Barbara and William Black. They have named their residence Downtown Tabby and the event, “Nana’s Elegant Tea Party.” Upon arrival, all participants were given time to select a boa and hat and then tour the home with its many tea party accessories. Next, both group and individual photos were taken. These pictures were later emailed to the attendees so they could remember such a pleasant and unique experience. Barbara “Nana” gave a short talk on the history of high tea, tea etiquette and how she started doing these events. Then it was time for “The Tea.” It was a three course tea with the first course being a sort of appetizer of crackers, scones and wonderful jellies and spreads. The second course consisted of three unique mini-sandwiches, the most interesting, egg salad in the shape of a tea pot. The last course was dessert. There was a delicious fruit filled mousse and several bite-sized sweets. And of course there was the tea. Each table was provided with numerous choices including flavored, traditional and non-caffeine. Then there were sweeteners, both colored and white sugar cubes as well as milk or cream-all kinds of choices to suit everyone’s palate. Each person had her own tea pot and “brewed” her own selection. Eventually, it was time to travel back home and away from our journey to the days of formal teas and precise etiquette. It was a lovely afternoon and a delightful experience. MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR Gary and Norma Raffelson By Charlene Bowman, Resident Do you believe in fairy tales? Or, perhaps you believe in love at first sight! Hmmm, it happened at Robert Mondavi Winery, where Gary and Norma Raffelson were employed. They were attending a special event and met for the first time. It was love at first sight! They have been blissfully married for 36 years. Life is fabulous, the second time around! Gary and Norma grew up and went to school in the San Francisco bay area of California. Gary graduated from San Jose State University with biological science degrees. His schooling set him on his career path in the food and health/beauty products. Also, he spent six + years in real estate. Norma graduated from high school and went to work in insurance, banking, winery PR and interior decorating. She attended school for interior decorating and has enjoyed working as a designer. The Raffelsons moved into their new home in February 2015. Prior to SDV, they lived in Temecula. Norma has used her designer skills to create a showcase home and yard. Walking into the front door is like walking into an Interior Design magazine. The back yard is equivalent to a resort setting. Absolutely spectacular! Why Solera Diamond Valley? Norma loves the people, making new friends and the gorgeous Mountain View Lodge. Gary loves the opportunity to join the numerous functions offered by Lifestyle, clubs and groups. Now, let’s get to the fun trivia! What are your hobbies? Norma’s are decorating, reading, cooking and going to Casinos. Gary’s are working on the house/yard, grilling and is looking forward to joining activities at SDV. Both of them love country dancing. What makes you laugh? Norma laughs at Gary’s dry humor. Gary enjoys a good joke. What would you like us to know? Norma likes to travel, enjoys decorating and loves to shop! Her wardrobe contains many boutique items from Pechanga Casino shops. Gary really likes meeting people. He never meets a stranger! Where do you like to vacation? The Raffelsons love Hawaii. What is your favorite food? Gary and Norma love all types of Mexican food. Every day, Gary makes breakfast burritos. Each day, for the duration of their marriage, Gary has made Norma fresh squeezed orange juice. He is such a thoughtful husband! Going on…… What is on your bucket list? They want to see more of the United States, take a trip to Europe (it’s already booked for next year), and taking a special trip each year in the future. What was the happiest moment of your life? Gary’s was the divorce of his first wife (or, he wouldn’t have Norma in his life) and the birth of his son. Norma’s was the birth of her two daughters and marrying Gary. What is your favorite song? Gary likes Mercury Blues and Remember When by Alan Jackson. Norma likes Have I Told You Lately That I Love You by Van Morrison. What is your favorite TV show? Gary enjoys all types of comedies. Norma enjoys all the home shows. Once a designer, always a designer! What is your favorite movie? Gary’s is Chicago, and Norma’s is American Sniper. And lastly, the special trivia. Gary has very strong organizational skills. He thinks through projects, starts them and finishes according to plan. (Secret – he was President of their previous HOA.) Right out of high school, Norma was selected to reign as Miss Dodge. And, she appeared in the 1962 Parade Magazine. The article, Animals Are a Girl’s Best Friend, featured a color photo with Norma holding a little kitten. In describing themselves, Gary says his is conservative and Norma says she is friendly. Introduce yourself to Gary and Norma and get a hug and friendship. You can’t ask for more than that! I hung up my swim suit and figured I would not compete in swimming again. After 50 years of a comfortable sedentary life, I moved to Solera Diamond Valley to settle down to more life on the couch. We had an event in those days called "The Del Webb Challenge." I was able to ignore it until someone told me there was a champion swimmer living here. "Self," I said, "you can beat any champion!" Thus, I began swimming again in the newly constructed Solera pool. Something had happened during those quiet years in front of the TV. I couldn't get across the pool! So, I set to work and after six months of water aerobics and practice, swimming four lengths across the pool wasn't that long. I was able to beat the champion by an couple of inches. He was eight years older and swam a much slower breast stroke to my faster crawl stroke. Former resident Fred Hoppe was very kind to this pretender to the throne. Fred guided me to the Masters Swimmer's Program and brought me along slowly. I started with the National Senior Games Novice Meet. One meet followed another until July of this year when I won first place in the National Senior Games Championship in the 200 yard backstroke for men in the 80 to 84 age category. My time was 00.03.51.050. (Fred won seven National Championships plus setting two World Records his last year here.) I will keep trying but probably will never come close to the true Solera swimming champion. The past seven and one-half years have brought major changes to my life. Some of the best have occurred in our "to hot for prime time" swimming pool. While returning from the Nationals in Minneapolis, MN my brother and I toured and camped out in six of our National Parks. We first went through the Badlands of the Dakotas and then on to Mt. Rushmore. Glacier, Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce and Zion parks followed. I saw in detail the true color and majesty of our land. And, I will always be grateful to Fred Hoppe for helping to rekindle my competitive spirit. Exciting Times for the Pickleballers by Lorraine K. Brealey Well, we are now officially a club. At the last board meeting we became, Solara Diamond Valley Pickleball club. Thanks for Rick Terrian, our new club President for pulling us all together. In addition, through Rick’s efforts along with Greg Rainer and Diana Floyd and the finance committee, the board approved the improvements to our Pickleball area. We will soon be having benches and bike racks to make the area safer and more comfortable for our growing membership. On May 30th, we had our first Men’s tournament. What a great success it was thanks to Rick for organizing it, to the players and of course our cheering section. I think we embarrassed some of the guys with our routing cheers but it was all in fun. The winners were, First place -Irving Waldo, Second Place Bob Portor and Third Place -Chuck Orrico. On June 13th, we had our 2nd Ladies Pickleball Tournament. Thanks to Rick and Lyn Boothby for keeping the scores, Barb Mophew for the donuts and to all those who came out to support the ladies. Tough competition out there but the weather was great. The results were: 1st place – Lorraine Brealey, 2nd place – Irene Cianfarani and 3rd place – Melinda Terrain. To celebrate, we had our 2nd BBQ on June 27th.
