King High School News Volume 13, Issue 2, Winter, 2012 A newsletter for the King High School Community Oh, how fast things can change! by Principal Darel Hansen T his past July I moved into the principal’s office and prepared for what certainly was going to be my greatest challenge. It was a move for which I have worked and prepared. After my first semester I can say it is everything I had hoped for. Martin Luther King High School is a big school, and I never know what each day will look like, but at the end of the day I can’t imagine being anywhere else. “ were pulled out and spoken to by one of their peers, hopefully helping them to better connect with the school. Our freshman failure rate dropped by 5% from the first quarter to the end of the semester. This is just a snapshot of all the programs we are offering to raise student achievement here at King High School. Parents, it may seem far off, but our California Standards Tests (CST's) are just around the corner. King High School has traditionally done well on this test, hoisting the “trophy” as the top scoring school in the city. If we are going to maintain that spot, we need to work together. Please make sure your students are doing their homework and doing all they can to score at the advanced level. You will be hearing more from me as we get closer to the April testing period. At the semester we took these tests again Thank you for choosing King, and Go Wolves! to measure growth, and we will take them again at the end of the year helping us truly measure the impact we made in each class. We have looked closely at our intervention programs and how well they help students who need extra attention. On numerous occasions we have pulled teachers out of classes and allowed them to go watch others teach. This has allowed teachers to see and work with their peers, helping them to improve in their specific area. This year we started working more with our teachers of English Learners. We have sent them to trainings and are now setting time aside for them to work and collaborate with each other. This should help them plan better lessons and learn from each other. Our freshman intervention program took another big step as we created the freshman summit program. Page 3 Martin Luther King Wolves Athletics by Tony Masi, King High Athletic Director “V ictory with Honor” for King HS, for California and the CIF Southern Section. Character and athletics have always been synonymous and Martin Luther King HS wants to embrace the six pillars of character in all our sports all year long. Responsibility, respect, fairness, caring, trustworthiness, and citizenship are the six pillars of character of CIF. Martin Luther King HS has just been selected as the Model School award recipient from the Big VIII league for CIFSS “Shake for Sportsmanship” award. King will have a representative group of student athletes accept the award at a Los Angeles Dodger game later this year. The Winter Sports 2012 school year will be a challenge in the Big VIII league, and the King High Wolves are showing great signs of healthy competition and positive results. King HS is currently 1st this year when all 8 schools totaled the success of their entire 21 different sports programs in Big VIII competition for the Fall Sports. State and RUSD budget issues mean more parent and community involvement will be needed each season in order for Martin Luther King HS to maintain the quality programs we have all The King High School News is a Quarterly publication of Martin Luther King High School, Riverside, California. Our seasonal sport parent meetings are now more important than ever as we present and explain RUSD fundraising policies for sports minded parents and families. VERY IMPORTANT - We should all take responsibility to keep our sense of dignity in all sporting circumstances, respect the rules and officials of the game, and urge our teams on with positive cheers by redirecting and discouraging those who engage in unsportsmanlike behavior. We can all be part of a message that interscholastic athletics can be a positive, lifelong learning experience. Support the King Wolves Athletic teams as we all are together as one team. Seeing the veterans interact with the students makes us all proud to be Americans! PTSA knows that many of you support your students and the school through the various booster clubs on campus. We don’t want you to be stressed beyond your means -- teenagers and their activities can be very time consuming. We only ask for you to support our “practically painless” fundraisers by linking your Ralphs Card to M.L. King PTSA at the Ralphs website, depositing your electronic recyclables in the Cartridges for Kids box at the bottom of the stairs in the administration building and by participating in our Spreebird online coupon program. TESTING INFO Curriculum Analyzing Assessment by Mike Rhodes, Assistant Principal Curriculum Fear, panic, chaos-my job is done here! At this point there is little doubt that you think I have gone “nuts”!! There is some truth to that statement; however, my intention is exactly the opposite. What I am referring to is the upcoming CST’s (California Standardized Testing), and our goal of reaching a very realistic 850 on the Academic Performance Index (API) this school year. So, why fear, panic, and chaos? More importantly, why did I allude to the “opposite”? The upcoming CST’s, which will be administered from April 17-27, with a “kick-off ” assembly scheduled for April 16th, are used in a variety of ways for our students. The CST results are used in conjunction with grades and other assessments when creating the upcoming schedule of classes for your student. Also, remind and reinforce to them that they have a great deal of test taking experience, and, specifically the CST’s. We will be giving them daily “tips” to help dissipate the natural anxiety associated with the CST’s. Test taking strategies such as time management, eliminating “distracter” answers and other related skills will be talked about daily in preparation for the CST’s. It is imperative that your student attend school daily during these high stakes exams; please reinforce this with your scholars. Also, the more we all speak with and prepare our students for the CST’s, the less fear, panic, and chaos they will experience. Confidence, calm, and order will prevail! The school and testing environment our students face each day is dramatically different than the one most of us “old” people experienced. Let us all help and support them in every way possible. Happy testing!!!!!!!!! Registration for the 2012-13 School Year by Kelli Paul, Head Counselor T he guidance department will begin registration for the 2012-2013 school year on Tuesday, February 14. Counselors will visit Literature classes where students will receive a copy of their transcript and registration materials. Beginning on February 22, students will meet with their counselor to turn in the registration form and discuss scheduling options. Registration forms and information will be available on the school website for parents; just click on the counseling section. When helping your student select classes consider the following points: 1. Students must have earned a C grade or higher in the areas of Math and Foreign Language in order to move to the next level. 2. Students that fail a high school graduation requirement must make up that class. Summer school information will be available the middle of April. 3. If students are four-year college bound, please consult the A-G requirements (students will be given a copy of this at the registration presentation). 4. Students must earn 215 credits in the required areas (students will be given a copy of their transcript and high school requirements during the registration presentation). 5. Four-year colleges are looking at the rigor of a student's course load. Consider challenging your student to take an AP or H level course.
