2012 President`s Report - A Wallace State Of Mind
President’s Report
2012: A Wallace State of Mind
WALLACE STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Wallace State will facilitate learning without boundaries, will be committed to every student’s success, will exemplify
the spirit of perpetual improvement and will promote an overarching sense of community.
A Message from the President
Thank you for your support of Wallace State Community College. Within these pages you will find
only the highlights of our constant efforts to ensure that students who enter our college are given
every opportunity to start early, start right, finish and succeed. That is why, having aggressively
accomplished the goals of our previous five year plan in just three years, we have embarked on a
new five year plan with the focus of getting students “Ready for College, Ready for Work, Ready
for Life.” Our primary focus is always on successful student outcomes, which are achieved not
only by excellence in teaching and learning but also through fostering engagement and wellbeing.
As a result, more high school seniors taking the ACT indicate a preference for attending Wallace
State than any other college in the Alabama Community College System, and the Aspen Institute
recently designated Wallace State as one of the top 120 community colleges in America based on
the outcomes our students achieve. We lead the Alabama Community College System in graduation rates and a recent report in Community College Week ranked Wallace State among the “Top
50 Associate Degrees: Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences” in the United States. We
invite you to take advantage of the many opportunities Wallace State has to offer, whether by
enrolling in a course for college credit courses or continuing education, or attending an event on
campus.
Sincerely,
Vicki P. Hawsey
President

Readiness3: Ready for College, Ready for Work, Ready for Life
COLLEGE

LIFE
In March 2012, Dr. Vicki P. Hawsey convened a Strategic Planning Task Force to develop a new strategic plan. Approximately 40
representatives of various campus and community constituencies participated in a two-day planning retreat that culminated in the
identification of six strategic priorities. These priorities, which focus on preparing students for college, for work, and for life, will guide our
initiatives through 2017.
READY FOR COLLEGE.
Strategic Priority 1
To strengthen portals of entry, including recruiting, outreach, and marketing,
and points of entry, such as physical and
electronic contacts, through innovative
and effective methods and practices.
Strategic Priority 2
To enhance student success through
multi-dimensional programs and
services that improve preparedness,
build self-esteem, and remove barriers
to academic and personal success.
READY FOR WORK.
Strategic Priority 3
To enhance workplace preparedness
through programs and services that
broaden vocational engagement, that
improve in vital, innovative ways the
institutional response to the present
and future needs of business and
industry, that represent synergistic
partnerships that promote the College’s
mission and vision, and that produce
graduates with the adaptive skills and
training needed to succeed in the
millennial workplace environment.
READY FOR LIFE.
Strategic Priority 4
To aggressively and strategically develop
multiple strategies of resource acquisition to support a culture of learning
Strategic Priority 5
To hold as a foundational principle
that the dynamics of change will be
grounded in a culture of evidence
marked by integrity, accountability,
and a belief in a continuous cycle of
institutional effectiveness.
Strategic Priority 6
To establish transformational learning
partnerships within, across, and beyond
the College’s curriculum that prepare
participants to lead successful and fulfilling lives without boundaries.

Invest in a Student, Change a Life
Wallace State is a state-assisted institution, but the percentage of its annual budget provided by the taxes
of Alabama’s citizens decreases every year. At the turn of the millennium, that portion stands at just over
one-fourth of each year’s operating revenue. Simply put, in order to carry out its chartered mission of
teaching and learning, the leader among community colleges in the state must tap into additional resources. While we strive to increase those sources of funding, private giving grows in importance as a new
source of funding to provide scholarships, improve educational programs, and capital improvements. The
Future Foundation looks to its alumni and friends to provide support to this institution, so that its mission
to provide an affordable education to the citizens across the state can continue.
