I had asked him what he thought of buying the Pininfarina-styled coupes and convertibles made in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. He was enthusiastic on the prospect. Today the current average value across the 308 range is $71,000, up 190 percent since 2011, according to Hagerty data. For the rare fiberglass 308s made in 1976, the increase is more than 200 percent. And earlier this year, a 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina set a world record for its type when it took $357,500 at a Gooding & Co. auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. “The racing Ferraris were the ones that grabbed headlines and were highly sought -after—at that point, 308s kind of were in that used-car phase in their life,” Klinger said. “But now you’ve got the generation that had these cars as posters. They’re starting to buy cars. So the older collector used to think of ‘real’ Ferraris as the racing Ferraris from the '50s and '60s, but the younger collectors are changing that.” For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 cforbes@ferrariofatlanta.com July 29th, 2016 Post-Dino, a Real Modern Ferrari This is the car Tom Selleck made famous in the television show Magnum, P.I., driving it around Hawaii from 1980 to 1989. Ferrari introduced it at the Paris Auto Show in 1975. It came just after the brand had made a Bertone-designed 308 GT4 2+2 seater, which was disparaged in some circles as a “budget Ferrari” and which closely followed the discontinuation of the popular Dino 246. (Those will likely always have more upward potential than the Ferrari 308s, Klinger says.) Critics thought it felt rushed; some Ferrari acolytes didn’t accept the 308 GT4 2+2 as a true Dino successor at all. So when the brand tapped Pininfarina to st yle a full-fledged, stand-alone 308 GTB, enthusiasts everywhere breathed a sigh of relief. In fact, this was a new 308, which Ferrari made from 1976 to 1985, when it was updated to a Ferrari 328. It was a true two-seat, mid-engine V8 coupe—and just over 12,000 were produced; a quarter of those are likely still left in the United States, according to Hagerty. Initial models came with a tube frame, a separate shell body, a five-speed manual transmission, and many of the same components as the Dino before it. Power varied from just over 200 horsepower to closer to 250hp in later years. GTS models included a removable black satin roof panel that could be stowed behind the seats. It was also, blessedly, eight inches shorter than the GT4. And with such a light (2,400-pound) body, it quickly earned a reputation as something immensely fun, if less than mind-numbingly fast, to drive. (I’ll get to the speed part in a second.) “For a car from the ‘80s, it is a nimble, high-revving engine with a great sound,” Klinger said. “It is plenty peppy and powerful to drive, and the gaited shifter makes it really fun.” The fact that the 308 isn’t weighed down by such extras as power steering, power brakes, or an enormous engine certainly helps, too. What to Look For If you are in the market to buy one, expect to pay anywhere from $50,000 to $125,000, depending on what you value in your car. The value is expected to level out and stabilize over the next few years. For instance, is the one you’re considering in perfect, original-condition form? Do you want one you’ll have to restore? Do you want one already restored? Those things determine how much you’ll have to pay. Versions with rebuilt engines, for instance, routinely cost more than six figures: The current average sale price for all 308s at North American auctions is $110,000, according to Hagerty. (That is an increase of 58 percent over the past 12 months). For the biggest bargain, look closely at the two-valve injected versions made from 1980 to 1982. They have only 205 horsepower but are reliable drivers and more affordable than the others. During the 308 production run, Ferrari introduced several variants: a 308 GTS Targa in 1977, plus GTBi and GTSi variants with improved fuel-injection from 1980 to 1982. (Fiberglass bodies had converted over to steel bodies by 1977; only 712 of those super-light ones made it through production.) By 1983 it was making the 308 GTBs and 308 GTS Quattrovalvole with even more engine refinement and power. The carbureted 308s from 1976 and 1977 are especially good on the road, thanks to aggressive cams and lack of emissions equipment, which made them light and nimble, even though they have less power than in later years. (Only 1,000 of the fiberglass-body cars from that year were made; they are among the lightest and most fun-to-drive cars from the era.) You can find some like that on websites such as the Du Pont Registry and Hemmings. Also, counter-intuitively, if you’re thinking of it as an investment, go for the coupe rather than the convertible. “This is one of those few cases where the coupe version is more valuable than the spider version,” Klinger said. “It’s not a huge difference, but the average value for a coupe is 16 percent higher than for a spider.” (Why? Seems to be a matter of personal taste.) There’s a big price spread at auction. Last year in Monterey, Mecum sold one estimated at $150,000. Gooding sells them for as little as $74,800 for a Ferrari-red one from 1979. What to Watch For The main thing to know if you do buy one is that it’ll cost a lot—more than your run-of-the-mill muscle car or sportster— to repair. Ferrari 308s have been known to suffer from unreliable camshaft belts, head gaskets, fuel systems, cooling systems, and electrical systems. Parts for 308s are plentiful but expensive. “There are examples when cars like this get purchased by someone who can afford the car but they don’t necessarily have the appetite or ability to pay to maintain it, so the cars just get driven and discarded,” Klinger said. “You need to know what you’re doing when you purchase it. If a timing belt breaks, you’ve got a very expensive repair ahead of it. The same goes for a very low mileage example that has been sitting for many years: It’s going to need some maintenance before you start driving it.” Once you get behind the wheel, the expense will have been worth it. Yes, the 308 can seem embarrassingly plodding in the context of how aggressive its sharp, short nose and gaping side air vents are. There was even a bit on some car show or other where the 308 was beaten in a head-to-head race with a Toyota Camry. The car has real personality, he said. That’s something no 0-60mph split time can ever measure. “If you asked me which car I wanted to drive across the country, while something like the Lamborghini Countach is certainly flashier, I would rather drive the 308,” Klinger said. “I had a great time. Ferrari has a knack for rewarding its most valued customers with special one-off models that are uniquely tailored to its customer's tastes. Ferrari's latest one-off, the 458 MM Speciale, shows just how awesome these custom creations can be. But how easy is it to commission Ferrari to build you your own custom model? Could you go to Ferrari headquarters with a $5 million check and walk out with a car? In an interview with Autocar, Ferrari’s commercial director Enrico Galliera opens up about this very secretive program and how to be a part of it. Gaining entry into Ferrari's One-Off program is not easy, and Ferrari does not promote it. In order to be selected, the automaker gauges prospective clients at events like the Festival of Speed. Galliera says that he likes "to pick those who live and breathe Ferrari and appreciate how special a one-off car is.” If you are selected, you better be prepared to devote some of your time to creating the car. A one-off Ferrari can take 18 to 24 months and "if you change your mind several times, then it takes longer than expected. It also depends on how different the car is and how specific you are with your requests." Ferrari will let you base your car on models it already makes. That means you can choose between a front or midengined V8 or V12. Ferrari will drastically change features such as aerodynamics, but the engine and transmission must remain the same. If the customer wants pink, or a hardcore racing version of the California T, the answer will be no. Galliera explains that, “This is first and foremost a Ferrari, which means that the performance cannot be compromised by the design.” After factoring in all this, you should still be prepared for a very long wait. Galliera says that one-offs are sold out until 2021."It has to remain something extremely limited. So even though we have a long list of clients, we are trying to cap it." If you're one of the few individuals who gets Ferrari to make you a one-off, you will certainly need to have some deep pockets. Galliera says that the price will depend on which chassis you choose, but you should be ready to spend over $3 million. You also better be prepared to drive it, because Ferrari looks for people who won't just stash the car away in a collection. Although, like most Ferrari cars, these amazing one-offs will probably be kept under a tarp and only shown off at snazzy car shows where they won't be driven. This one of 3 2014 Nero DS Opaco Ferrari LaFerrari has only 211 miles on the clock and could bring in an estimated $3.9 to $4.5 million dollars. The 6.3-liter V12 powered LaFerrari with 949 hp has an all-black interior to match its original Nero DS Opaco paint job. The platform needed to be highly flexible so that it can underpin most of Ferrari’s lineup including mid-engine sports cars and front-engined GTs. It also needed to be compatible with rear- and all-wheel-drive setups as well as hybrid technology. It’s a strategy already employed by arch rival McLaren, but Ferrari is sticking with aluminum for its platform as opposed to carbon fiber favored by McLaren and a few other supercar marques. Ferrari favors aluminum because of the material's relative ease when it comes to production and maintenance, despite it being heavier and less stiff than carbon fiber. It’s been revealed that America’s Altair helped Ferrari develop the new platform. Altair has been working with Ferrari for over a decade and even sent a team to Maranello to work alongside Ferrari’s own design, engine ering and manufacturing teams on the new platform. Altair is an expert in computational modelling and this talent was required in meeting the strict weight and structural targets, Ferrari engineer Maximilian Szwaj said. (Viknesh Vijayenthiran) 'Historic' Ferrari that Lay Unused for 50 years is Set to Sell for £6million - Despite Rotting Inside and Needing a Full Restoration A 'historically significant' Ferrari is set to sell for £6million next month despite it lying unused for almost 50 years and needing a full restoration. The 1950 Ferrari 166 MM is one of the Italian manufacturer's earliest cars and was driven in legendary races such as the thousand-mile Mille Miglia in 1950 and 1951. On the outside, the car appears to be in impeccable shape, But on further inspection, the interior needs a full - and likely expensive - refurbishment. The car - which originally had no roof - was driven by auto designer Nuccio Bertone and finished third in its class in 1950 with a time of 15 hours and 22 minutes. The Ferrari hit an average speed of about 65mph in that race but had a top speed of more than 110mph thanks to its 2-litre V12 engine in its prime. The car - known as 0046 M - continued to be raced but in 1953 it was transformed into a 'berlinett a', or closed roof coupe, by coachbuilder Zagato. By 1955, the Italian sports car was in the U.S. and in 1966 it was bought for $1,500 by American student Darren Westfaul, who used it to drive to his University of Alabama campus. After graduating in 1967, Mr Westfaul tucked the car away and it was hardly seen until 2007, when he generously donated it to the university to sell on. They made more than $1million (£761,000) from the Ferrari and the car has been preserved - even retaining a 50year-old university parking permit in the window. Despite it requiring a full restoration - not to mention a lick of paint inside - auction house Gooding & Co has described the car as 'one of the last great unrestored Ferraris'. If the Ferrari 166 MM achieves its estimate, it will be one of the most expensive unrestored cars to ever sell publicly. 'This 1950 166 MM is a thoroughbred competition Ferrari and an important part of the Italian marque's pedigree,' a Gooding & Co spokesman said. 'Remarkably, this historic Ferrari has been in storage since 1967 and is presented today in wonderful unrestored condition. 'This fascinating early Ferrari offers its new owner exciting options of either preserving the car in its current state as a true time capsule from the mid-1960s or performing an exacting restoration - either in its period Zagato Berlinetta configuration or return the car to its original Barchetta design.' It is one of a number of very valuable Italian cars which are being sold by Gooding & Co at its Pebble Beach sale in California on August 20 and 21. The auction house also has a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione which has been valued at around £15million. It is also offering a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione, worth an estimated £13million, and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta expected to sell for almost £10million. Your paint can look fantastic, but if you haven’t taken the time to properly detail areas such as the wheels, wheel wells, glass, or the exhaust tips, then the job simply isn’t complete. Perhaps the most frequently overlooked area is the exhaust tips. Although it can be a bit of a messy job if they’re neglected, it’s actually quite simple and doesn’t require a tremendous amount of time to do it right. Not only does it make the car look much better when the exhaust tips are detailed, but it also prolongs the life of the finish, which is usually stainless steel or chrome. Similar to wheel care, if neglected the finish on your exhaust tips will start to corrode, pit, or discolor. With regular maintenance however, they will stay looking nice for a very long time. First let’s take a look at the exhaust tips on this 2005 BMW M3. As you can see, they’re in need of some serious work! I’ve got my buckets ready and supplies staged, so let’s get busy! Once again, here are the exhaust tips before I got started. First I start by spraying down the inside and outside of the tips with Chemical Guys Grime Reaper APC at a 5:1 ratio. It’s shipped as a concentrate, so you’ll want to get a DI Trigger Spray Bottle to mix your solution in. After letting the APC dwell for a minute to start breaking down the grime, I’ll clean the outside part of the exhaust using either a Mini E-Z Detail brush (they are perfect for cleaning the areas between a dual-tip setup like this one), or an old microfiber towel that I strictly use for dirty jobs. Take a look at the dramatic difference between the two sides…and this is even before polishing! After I cleaned all 4 tips in the same manner, I washed and dried the M3 (and polished it), and am now putting all of the finishing touches on the car. Your exhaust tips are now clean, but if you want to take them to the next level, I recommend polishing them up a bit both inside and out. Here I am using Optimum Metal Polish and 0000 steel wool on the insides of the tips. If there’s a grain in the finish, then be sure to polish with the grain. Another product that I like to use on the outside of exhaust tips is Klasse All-In-One. All finished! As you can see, the insides of the exhaust tips have a bit of permanent etching from infrequent cleaning, but they look much better, and will remain that way with simple cleaning during each wash.
