2011-2012 - St. David`s Center
every path is unique 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends of St. David’s Center, As we reflect on the year, we feel deep gratitude for your partnership; profound resolution to stay the course in achieving our vision; and pride in what we accomplished. The year’s events have positioned the organization to serve children and families — no matter their path — for years to come. and we began providing treatment services to children in our foster care homes who would otherwise have been placed in residential treatment settings. Our therapeutic recreation services expanded to Minneapolis, as a result of a new partnership, and we continue to grow our innovative residential services model. Our 2011-12 fiscal year began with the state government shutdown. Though our services to clients continued without interruption, the financial impact was a challenge to absorb. This was further compounded in a year in which we made significant investments to increase efficiencies in our business operations. In June 2011, 40 of our community-based and administrative staff moved to newly-leased and renovated office space in St. Louis Park, the first step in our plan to align our campus in Minnetonka with our exceptional early education and early intervention services. Renovation began in late August and continued throughout the year, and we are thrilled with the results: optimally-functioning, beautiful speech therapy, mental health and autism day treatment spaces for children and families. Despite this challenge, St. David’s Center responded in several new ways to community needs for early identification and intervention. New or expanded partnerships with school districts, childcare centers and nonprofit organizations were leveraged to meet these needs. We launched a multidisciplinary team to provide assessments for young children This is an incredibly exciting time for St. David’s Center. Your generous support is critical to our success and the exceptional outcomes we see every day. Overview Thank you for joining us on this journey. 2011-2012 Board of Directors Julie Sjordal Executive Director Stacey Crosby Board Chair Stacey Crosby, chair Yasmin Akhtar Jill Bollettieri Betsy Collins Angie Dahlof Anne Edwards, M.D. Lars Erdahl Jeff Erickson Sheila Folkestad Richard Justman, M.D. Hugh Kirsch Jeryn Konezny Connie Linder Hatem Madkour Brad Neary Candace Randle Karen Richard Rachel Roen Julz Schwingler Tom Suk Founded in 1961, St. David’s Center for Child & Family Development is a non-profit organization dedicated to building relationships that nurture the development of every child and family. Today, St. David’s Center serves more than 2,000 children and families throughout the Twin Cities metro each year through: • Early Childhood Education for children of all abilities | 343 children served • Early Intervention and Treatment for children with developmental needs | 1,115 children served • Life-phase Services for individuals with enduring special needs | 713 individuals served The Path to Growth A single mother with two young children, Toi was frustrated with the childcare options available to her family. Enrolled in a North Minneapolis daycare, Toi noticed that her one-year-old daughter, Kaisa, was experiencing behavioral issues. She attributed these issues partially to poor modeling and lack of structure at her daycare and partially to barriers in communication she was experiencing due to a hearing problem. Toi thought ear tubes might be the answer to Kaisa’s communication issues but was discouraged to find that the problems persisted. At 16 months, Toi removed Kaisa from her daycare and enrolled her in the Early Childhood Education program at St. David’s Center. Almost immediately, Kaisa’s teachers realized that she wasn’t as communicative as other children her age and recommended incenter speech therapy services. Amy, a St. David’s Center speech therapist, formulated a treatment plan to help Kaisa reach an age-appropriate communication level. Over 98% of children who completed pediatric therapy services achieved at least three therapy goals. Amy maintained regular communication with Toi and Kaisa’s teachers to ensure that what she was learning in speech therapy was transferred to both the home and classroom environments. Collaboratively, they incorporated activities designed to build vocabulary, articulation and fluency into Kaisa’s day-to-day schedule. Toi recalls her daughter’s progress early on. “One day, out of the blue, Kaisa looked at me and clearly asked ‘Mommy, can I have a drink?’ I was shocked; I responded ‘When did you learn to talk?’” After just six months of speech therapy, Kaisa surpassed age-appropriate communication levels and was discharged from speech therapy. “Being able to communicate clearly has eliminated all kinds of frustrations for Kaisa,” says Toi. “Her attitude has changed; she’s more social, responsive and empathetic.” In addition to speech therapy, Toi attributes many of these improvements to positive behavior modeling from Kaisa’s teachers. She is continuously impressed with the structure of the classrooms, the education provided and the nurturing staff. “The quality of care is just awesome,” says Toi. “Children are being physically shown by teachers how to be caring, independent and respectful individuals.” “St. David’s Center took Kaisa from the crawling stage to the walking stage. She’s blossoming before our eyes and I’m so thankful for all of the individuals at St. David’s Center who have helped her get to this stage.” The Path to Confidence Five-year-old Sam* had known chaos his whole life. At a very early age, he witnessed domestic abuse at the hands of his father and was regularly awoken from sleep by his mother to seek shelter in the home of a friend or relative. Unable to understand why his dad would leave the house and not return for days, Sam was living in a state of distrust, fear and self-doubt. At just five years old, this oncehappy and confident little boy had lost his spark. Previously stuck in “survival mode,” Sam’s mom Rachel* recognized the effects of chaos manifesting in her son and reached a breakthrough. “I was living in denial,” says Rachel, “I finally realized that what I was doing was not working. I had compromised my convictions and I was unable to do what was best for my children.” Rachel knew she needed to make a change. Part of St. David’s Center’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program for several years, Rachel decided to confide in Sam’s ECE teachers. “I realized that this was a place where I could take a chance. I told them ‘I can’t do this anymore, I need help.’” They listened empathetically, echoed her concerns about Sam’s behavior and responded with an immediate solution—St. David’s Center’s onsite Children’s Mental Health services. Seeking treatment in a place that was familiar and safe to her son was an obvious choice to Rachel. “Why would I look for treatment in an unfamiliar setting when there was a readily-available resource in a place where he already felt comfortable and secure?” She quickly became connected with Julie, a St. David’s Center mental health therapist, and they began collaboratively forming Sam’s treatment plan. Initial conversations with Julie were filled with questions like: “How do I talk to my child about addiction? How do I move beyond this situation and parent without guilt? How do I teach him that he’s safe now and that he can trust me?” Sam’s treatment plan included weekly play therapy sessions with Julie, designed to teach him to process his emotions positively and rebuild confidence and trust in himself and others. His treatment remained fluid and flexible as he and his family experienced the personal highs and lows of their “new normal.” A particularly low point came last winter. Rachel, Julie and Sam’s ECE teachers had spent weeks preparing Sam for his first visit in eight months with his father because they realized what a confusing experience the visit could be for a child whose “new normal” didn’t include a dad. Minutes prior to picking up his son, Sam’s father cancelled the visit. Sam was heartbroken. The progress he made in the months prior seemed to fade instantly. Julie, Rachel and Sam’s teachers regrouped immediately to discuss the next steps in therapy and dedicated themselves to rebuilding Sam’s trust and healing his broken heart through relationships with his mom, therapist and teachers. “It’s the network. The village. The community,” says Rachel. “It took everybody there to repair the damage and help him get where he is today.” Collaboration and responsiveness is just a part of what makes St. David’s Center such a precious resource to Rachel. Today, six-year-old Sam is thriving in his kindergarten classroom. He returns to St. David’s Center once a week for play therapy sessions and his progress is amazing. Sam’s family is moving forward as well. “We’ve learned from our past but it doesn’t define us,” says Rachel. “We had been numb for so long. Two years ago, I would have driven down Minnetonka Boulevard and not seen the fall colors. We’re making a conscious effort to live again, to surround ourselves with good people and to feel gratitude for the life we have today.” *Names and photos have been changed to protect privacy. 83% of children who participated in play therapy improved their social and emotional functioning. The Path to Independence Born with a rare metabolic disorder and developmental disability, 27-year-old Brian has frequently been described by doctors as “an enigma.” Baffled by Brian’s condition, many doctors concluded that his symptoms would simply continue to worsen to the point of complete debilitation. But Brian’s mother, Naomi, refused to accept this negative trajectory as her son’s only option. When Brian was just five years old, Naomi enrolled him in services at St. David’s Center. She recalls sitting in a support group when Brian was still quite young and being asked about the goals she held for her son. She responded, “I want him to be able to live independently in a supported living setting and learn that he can be successful in the world without his mother. I want him to learn that he can rely on other people for support.” 100% of individuals in Supported Living Services apartments increased independence through employment or other community integration activities. In his 22 years with St. David’s Center, Brian has received support from the organization’s Personal Care Assistance services, Waivered Services and Therapeutic Recreation programs such as Monday Night Club and Destination Anywhere. But it was the Supported Living Services (SLS) program at St. David’s Center that gave Brian the support he needed to fulfill his mother’s dream for him to live independently. This May, Brian, who previously insisted that he’d live at home forever, moved out of his mom’s house into a St. David’s Center SLS apartment. Named “The Bachelor Pad” by its inhabitants, the apartment is home to Brian and his two roommates, who he met through the Destination Anywhere program. With the support of an onsite coordinator, Brian and his roommates are responsible for all activities of daily living, including cleaning, shopping and cooking. In addition to maintaining an independent lifestyle at home, Brian is employed 10 hours a week by a nearby Lifeworks day program. To Naomi, the relationships formed and independence fostered through SLS are parts of a larger life lesson for her son. “The fact that Brian now knows that there are other people who support and care about him is wonderful. He is learning to trust others, try new things and be a contributor in the community.” DONORS $50,000 - $99,999 Evenstad Family Foundation Greater Twin Cities United Way Medica Foundation $25,000 - $49,999 Lynn and Larry Stranghoener The Cargill Foundation Greater Twin Cities United Way Women’s Leadership Council The Mosaic Company The Sheltering Arms Foundation Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation Wolohan Family Foundation $10,000 - $24,999 Cliff Roberts Michael Snow Best Buy Children’s Foundation BlackRock Matching Gift Program Creative Kidstuff, Inc.
