NEWS 100% Electric Nissan Leaf picks up European car of the Year 2011 Trophy The trophy recognising the revolutionary Nissan LEAF as Europe’s Car of The Year 2011 was handed over to Nissan Motor Co.’s President and CEO Carlos Ghosn in a special ceremony held at the Pavillion Gabriel in Paris. To win the award, the 58 CoTY members – leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries – placed Nissan LEAF ahead of six conventional cars on the shortlist. It is the first time in CoTY’s 47-year history that the annual award has been won by an electric vehicle. “I am convinced that we will see other electric cars named Car of the Year in the future. But when we do, we must always remember that only one can be the first. And that is why Nissan LEAF Car of the Year 2011 is – and will remain – so very special,” said Håkan Matson, president of the CoTY jury, speaking at the ceremony. “It is a great honour for Nissan LEAF to be recognised as the European Car of the Year a Memorandum of Understanding to promote zero-emission mobility – the first all-electric car to receive this distinction. It will take the partnership between the two sides to new heights. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA Vice-president, and Chairman of the Desert Challenge Organising Committee, made the announcement. He confirmed that 2011 will see the return of Nissan’s flagship Patrol SUV, dubbed “The Hero of All Terrain”, as the official car of Abu Dhabi’s international cross-country rally, which is acknowledged to be one of the toughest yet most spectacular rallies on the sporting calendar. One of the rally’s toughest stages will be named after Nissan, and will start and finish at the prestigious Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, deep in the heart of Abu Dhabi emirate’s Western Region. Ben Sulayem said: “Nissan is a highly valued, long-term partner of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. They have been with us for eight years and their support has been invaluable in helping us to take the great strides we have taken to make the rally the world-class event that it now is. “Nissan Middle East is once again delighted to be partnering with the Automobile Touring Club of the UAE and the FIA to be a sponsor of the 2011 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge,” said Atsuo Kosaka, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East. “With plans for an even bigger event this year and the attention of the international media, we are sure spectators will enjoy one of the world’s greatest and most authentic desert rallies”. The verdict by AutoMiddleEast.com was an overall victory for the Nissan Patrol 2010. Commenting on the award, Abdulilah Wazni, Senior Manager, SUV Marketing, at Nissan Middle East FZE said: “The launch of the all-new 2010 Patrol has been Nissan’s most important new product launch in the region this year and so this recognition from the editors at AutoMiddleEast.com is a great way to prove that the new generation Patrol is a technological tour de force and takes the ‘Hero of all Terrain’ to new levels of excellence.” Evo Middle East, a British automobile magazine dedicated to performance cars, from hot hatches to supercars, recently recognized Nissan’s Patrol as the ‘4x4 of the year’. It also received the ‘Best Heavy Duty Elegant SUV - 2010’ award from pan-Arab magazine and Lebanon-based Future TV. Automobile magazine is one of the oldest and most popular Pan-Arab automotive titles. The TV show, by the same name, on Future TV is also widely watched by the Arab population in the Middle East. A year after its exclusive global premiere launch in the GCC, the new generation Patrol has repeatedly lived up to its title as the ‘Hero of all Terrain’. The 2010 Nissan Patrol has also been recognized as the ‘Best SUV Award for 2010’ by another regional automotive magazine, Car Express. Gulf Autos magazine has recognized the Patrol and ‘Best SUV of the Year, ’while another magazine, Middle East Car has says Nissan’s Patrol is ‘Best in Class Full Size SUV.’ At the time of going to press, more awards for the all-new Nissan Patrol were being announced. 6 www.eshiftmagazine.com “The Nissan Patrol continues to receive top regional automotive awards” 7 COVER STORY 8 www.eshiftmagazine.com www.eshiftmagazine.com Nissan GT-R Don't mess with it! 9 COVER STORY A freshened version of the Godzilla is back. And this time, it is more powerful, smarter, chic and exclusive for the Middle Eastern buyer. Yes, Nissan is not just bringing the 2011 GT-R to our shores this year, but has also developed an exclusive VVIP version of the beast for its elite clientele. You will recall that the legend of the GT-R started back in 1969 with the legendary Skyline which later evolved into the high performance Skyline GT-R. The GT-R was re-born in 2007 as the accessible, daily drive supercar. Top auto journalists, race car drivers and owners have heaped praise on the GT-R, and the car has achieved a cult status amongst performance enthusiasts. The twin turbo V6 Godzilla is not just (ironically) prettier to look at, but the 2011 model adds more power, larger exhausts pipes, modified valve timings, greater fuel efficiency with improved dynamics and above all, a VVIP edition for the Middle East. Visibly the 2011 GT-R can be distinguished immediately thanks to a host of exterior design improvement. The front bumper is newly designed with double rectifier fins and high intensity white-colour LEDs. The new bumper is not only aesthetically pleasing but also increases front downforce by about 10%, while reducing air resistance inside the engine compartment and increasing air flow to the brakes. At the rear a redesigned bumper, extended rear diffuser, new tailpipe finisher and LED fog lamps are primary changes on the new GT-R. Nissan has bumped up the GT-R’s performance by a neat 45 ponies. The 2011 GT-R’s 3.8-litre V6 engine now produces 530 horse power at 6400 rpm as against the older model’s 485, while torque is also up to 612Nm. The revised engine now comes with a sporty red colour cover to demonstrate the added power. The all-wheel drive 2011 GT-R has become even more rapid and can sprint from 0-100kph in just three seconds. Despite the increase in power, the 2011 GT-R features a host of fuel saving measures which help increase overall fuel efficiency to 8.5kpl (Japan market measurement). Emission levels also have been reduced and the new GT-R is greener than its predecessor. The GT-R now comes with a revised dual-clutch transmission with faster shift times and a new ‘SAVE’ mode which modifies the shift schedule to improve actual fuel economy when driving highways or open roads. To harness the engine’s increased power the GT-R’s body has been stiffened using lightweight materials and Nissan has also modified the suspension to improve road holding and stability. The 2011 GT-R rides on lighter and more rigid alloy wheels which improve the car’s responsiveness and help put all that power down on the tarmac. The interiors of the new GT-R have also been improved and the sports car now comes with a revised instrument panel which is easier to use. New materials are used for the interior ascents including carbon-fibre and magnesium which give the GT-R’s cabin an upmarket and sporty feel. Externally, the GT-R appears little changed from its predecessors mainly owing to functional but subtle changes. However, 24 Karat gold plated side panels, grille and all-exclusive VVIP badge and a rear carbon spoiler visually distinguish the VVIP edition from anything else on the roads. Underneath its skin, the suspension geometry has been tweaked and new shocks with lower friction installed. The all-wheel-drive system has an electronic decoupler that disengages power to the front wheels to reduce understeer, in those situations when the tail wants to hang out there where it belongs. Aerodynamics have further improved and downforce increased by about 10%, while the coefficient of drag is further reduced from 0.27 to 0.26. The Vehicle Dynamics Control has been adjusted to provide better response off the line. The new GT-R is lighter by 10 kilos. More importantly, there is a reduction of friction. “Push GT-R with just one hand and it will roll,” says Kazutoshi Mizuno, 16 Yas Marina Circuit became GT-R's playground on its exclusive Middle East launch www.eshiftmagazine.com the chief engineer and Programme Director of Nissan’s GT-R flagship. The GT-R is well mannered and easy to drive on the streets. A special Bilstein DampTronic suspension system with double wishbones in the front and multi link aluminum member in the rear provides appropriate damping forces and helps maintain a high level of control in cornering, straight line driving and braking. Setting the suspensions in Comfort mode turns this beast into a smooth sailing ship. Electronically controlled four wheel drive system comes standard and confidently takes you through the tightest of the bends you throw at the GT-R. Brembo full floating rotors (390mm front and 380mm rear) provide superb braking power for this daily-drive supercar. Upgrades to the brake system include thinner rotors that improves pedal feel and increases fade resistance and extend brake rotor life for sporty driving. Inside the cabin, the center console is now finished with attractive genuine matte carbon fiber and upgraded material. A choice of 12 interior color combinations is good to satisfy the wildest of choices. Our test car had white leather seats with golden trims on it and an all white leather interior, giving very chic feel inside the car. Hand crafted seats by master craftsmen at Seton Company Inc. Muelheim an der Ruhr in Germany, are unique for a supercar – they are luxurious and yet supportive. Whether the drive is to a night club or on the track, a reassuring feel of the seats holding you is confidence inspiring. In addition, the 11-speaker Bose audio system with two subwoofers, exclusively tuned according to the driving position, throws a sea of sound waves that surround and insulate you from anything other than what’s playing at the time. We prefer listening to the orchestra of GT-R’s engine though. Bluetooth phone connectivity and a navigation system with a hard drive from which you can use up to 9.3GB for audio storage are some gimmicks designed to make life more enjoyable inside the car. High performance cars have a tendency to handle best only when driven by experienced drivers, yet the GT-R has the handling, transmission, traction and performance to enable anyone to drive this car with ease. This is what makes the GT-R stand out from other super cars. The lesson learnt is don’t mess with the GT-R – on road or track. “Well mannered on the street, the elusive GT-R is totally wild on the track” The GT-R VVIP edition at Yas Marina Circuit Ben Sulayem with the GT-R VVIP edition at Yas Marina Circuit 17 Feature It looks like a sports car, handles like a sports car and performs like one too. NISSAN ESFLOW Concept Putting the spark into electric vehicles 18 www.eshiftmagazine.com www.eshiftmagazine.com 19 Feature Crisp lines convey the sporting pedigree of the ESLOW Concept What make it unique is that unlike many electric sports cars on the market, the ESFLOW is not an existing conventional engine powered car that has been adapted to run on electricity, but a sports car that's been designed from scratch. This means that Nissan's designers had complete freedom to place the electric motors and batteries in the best possible way to benefit the car's handling and performance. ESFLOW is rear-wheel drive and it runs on two motors placed above the axis of the rear wheels. These motors independently control the left and right wheels, and so the torque is optimised to ensure outstanding vehicle stability and control as well as efficient power regeneration. The ESFLOW reaches a 100kph in under 5 seconds. Power for the motors comes from the same laminated lithium-ion battery packs used in the Nissan LEAF, but in ESFLOW the packs are located along the axis of the front and rear wheels. This centralizes the mass of the car, and thus its rotation point, close to the driver’s hips. These cleverly positioned batteries enable the car to travel over 240km on one charge. An aluminium chassis has been built around the drive train, taking full advantage of the opportunities that Zero Emission electric propulsion provides. The high waistline afforded by the ESFLOW’s classic sports car proportions allows strong, yet unobtrusive roll bars incorporated in to the structure behind the seats to safely take the entire load of the car in the event of a roll over, negating the need for obtrusive, thick, reinforced A-pillars and the blind spots they inevitably create. This almost unobstructed view ahead will not be unfamiliar to fighter pilots, and just as such pilots speak of “strapping their planes on to their backs”, the ESFLOW owners will also feel the car to be an extension of their bodies, reacting to their slightest whims. The driver must be at the centre of 20 www.eshiftmagazine.com www.eshiftmagazine.com the sports car both physically and metaphorically. The ESFLOW is undoubtedly an attractive car. Crisp, clean lines not only convey the purity of its sporting potential, but suggest the clarity of electric power. The colour scheme chosen for the concept car is inspired by glaciers - highly reflective solidified liquid with blue tints in its shadows. Like its ZEV concept forebears and contemporary stable mate the ESFLOW’s headlights and Nissan emblem are tinted cool blue. The six spoke wheels contain blue carbon inserts while the same material adorns the side sill, roof mounted lip spoiler and lower rear bumper. Blue LEDs accentuate the futuristic lights slashed into the bodywork both front and rear. Where the Nissan LEAF’s protrusive headlights are used to guide airflow around the door mirrors, this is not needed on ESFLOW as the mirrors have been replaced with minute rear view cameras at the base of its A-pillars. The ESFLOW’s front lights do protect a secret of their own flip out charging points built in to the air ducts beneath. Ecological minimalism need not come at the expense of luxury. The cabin of the ESFLOW is clean and open and weight saving has been a priority throughout its design, but it is still a comfortable and pleasant place to sit. By far the heaviest components in modern cars’ interiors are the steel framed, thickly upholstered and increasingly motorized seats. In ESFLOW the seats are sculpted into the rear bulkhead of the car, negating the need for a heavy frame. The fly-by-wire steering and pedals adjust electrically to the best spot to suit each individual driver’s size and preferred driving position. With hints of classic and contemporary Nissan sports car abound, the ESFLOW is evidently a dramatic two-seater concept car created from the ground up as a pure electric vehicle. “A dramatic two-seater sports car, the ESFLOW Concept is designed from ground up as an electric vehicle ” 21 HERITAGE www.eshiftmagazine.com Nissan R380-II A racing car designed and built in 1965 by the then Prince Motor circuit became the record setting turf where a R380 driven by Yukio Sugita on Company, born with a single aim of winning the Japanese Grand Prix, the Prince October 6, 1965 set new international speed records, one after another, in four R380 was a seed that Nissan acquired following the merger with Prince Motor categories over distances ranging from 50 to 200km. We can picture our dream easily there. But, interior designing is a more realistic work,” says Ayaka Go, Colour Designer. Colour design at Nissan starts with what the Colour Designers call “Design Taste Boxes.” Once a vehicle’s product concept has been fixed, Colour Designers look at every aspect of the target customers’ lives – age, gender, taste, hobbies, activities and values – and put together a bunch of things that the target customer uses in their daily lives in wooden “Design Taste Boxes.” Next, they make computer graphics of the new model based on the collection of things in the Taset Boxes. The idea is to keep exterior and interior design consistent with what the target customer is comfortable with in their Colour Designers A story of delivering message through colour and materials daily lives. Colour designers also have to consider how different colours are seen and perceived in different regions and cultures. For instance, the quality of natural light in Japan differs from that in the Middle Eastern countries – which affects how colours are seen. There are also differences in how various cultures perceive colours. “In China, the popularity of black sedans remains deep-rooted, though some younger buyers are moving to SUVs and more colourful exteriors. In the Middle East, customers prefer glittering body colours and interiors and rich The art and science of making cars has come a long way from decorations,” explains Kei Yoshitomi, Associate Chief Designer “ Taking the the historic quote by an automotive pioneer, who once said, "Any customer regional influences of taste and culture must always be part of our consideration can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black." Nissan in choosing exterior and interior colours.” understands the importance of colours and materials and has assigned the job “Body colour is where we can embody our image. We can picture our of choosing these for their cars to a specialized group of people called ‘Colour dream easily there. But, interior designing is a more realistic work,” says Ayaka Designers,’ a part of Nissan's deisgn department. Go, Colour Designer. “Unlike body colour, we select not only colours but also 26 www.eshiftmagazine.com materials in interior colour design.” There are many parts inside the car that customers touch or operate, such as the steering wheel and controls, seats and glove box etc. These pieces have to be practical and, at the same time, meet various design requirements, including durability, luminosity (reflection), productivity (expansion and contraction), discolouration and flame resistance. This is why Go calls it “realistic work.” Though challenged by these various restrictions, Nissan colour designers keep pushing the envelope, proposing new designs and new ideas. The interior texture in the new Z is a great example. For the new Z, Nissan’s newly developed material called “Sofilez” is applied on the center cluster individually by hand. This new material was created to provide a sense of “human touch,” derived from the analysis of “softness” which people prefer. Balancing soft touch with durability, “Sofilez” provides added comfort in the cabin and an improved interior texture. When deciding a colour variation, it is important to draw up a strategy considering the role of each colour. For instance, the compact Nissan Micra has a variation of 12 colours and each colour has a different role. Since almost every car has a standard range of white, gray, black or red, if a car has no colour variations, customers may exclude the car from their options. Comparing this to a soccer formation, white, gray, black and red are the equivalent of the defenders or goalkeepers. On the other hand, “character colours” play the role of a midfielder or a forward – strongly promoting a car’s unique design characteristics or personality. For March, each character colour has a theme, such as fruit, dessert, cocktail or the four seasons in Japan. Associating those themes with the car, Nissan has been able to promote the March in new ways, which have been highly appreciated. Micra has received a number of awards in the Auto Colour Awards hosted by Japan Fashion Colour Authority (JAFCA). “At Nissan, we are challenged to propose unconventional colours that have not been seen before. Within Nissan, colour is recognized as one of the values of a car and that’s why we can create new colours where a car’s characteristics are brought out, without sticking to stereotypes,” says Yoshitomi. “Thinking Outside the Box Begins Inside the Boxes” “Each car’s characteristics need to be carefully considered and expressed by body colour,” says Keiko Kitagawa, Colour Designer. 27 MOTORSPORTS www.eshiftmagazine.com Motorsports takes high seat in 2011 Riding on a successful 2010 season, Nissan is ready to challenge the global motorsports scene once again in 2011. She loves to travel, bake and being lady – shop naturally. We caught up with this homemaker and talked a bit about Nissan. What do you drive, for how long and what was your set of wheels before this? I am driving a Nissan Petrol super safari since 2005. Since the time I came to UAE, my husband has had Nissan vehicles and I really enjoyed driving the Nissan’s. We have owned a Nissan Sunny, a Nissan coupe and currently he drives a Nissan Altima. So, when it came to me buying a vehicle I choose Nissan too. My first car in Dubai was a Nissan Pathfinder full option but manual gear and then I moved to the Nissan Patrol also a full option but manual gear. I enjoy driving manual over automatic. Your take on Patrol and experiences of owning/driving it… Good after sales service, past experience, reliability, comfort and powerful airconditioning were the factors which influenced me when buying my own car. When I did the test drive on other similar category 4 wheel vehicles, Nissan Petrol was the best. Since we had Nissan vehicles all long including my previous Nissan Pathfinder, I went for it and no regrets. The best experience is driving the Nissan petrol in the desert. It has monster power and its performance in the desert is amazing. Where do you mostly use your Patrol? Do you take it off road? I drive my kids to their school everyday, and weekends in winter months call for driving in the dunes. Why manual gearbox and not automatic? I always drove manual gear vehicles and will continue to drive manual gear vehicles as this gives pleasure in driving. Did you consider anything else when you were buying the Patrol? I was evaluating the Nissan Petrol and one of its main competitors. What’s on your stereo? Mainly Gospel music, radio and mix of CD music What’s your dream drive?
