Guide The Golden ...it’s worth its weight Packed full of practical information for over 50s, with a wealth of local contacts and who can help if things go wrong Covers a range of local topics including Money, Health, Care, Leisure and Your Home New revised and extended edition 2012 Stockton-on-tees and district It’s never too late to learn 2012 Hello and welcome to the 2012 edition of our Stockton-on-Tees guide – as always it’s full to bursting with information and contacts from around the Borough and beyond. Not everyone had a great experience with learning in their early years. Even if you did, you may find there are some subjects you’d like to explore further later in life. That’s why we’re open to all, whatever your age, background or previous qualifications. Whether you’re keen to build your confidence, prove something to yourself or learn simply for enjoyment, we’ll help you get there. In times of continuing financial uncertainty it seemed appropriate to give extra space to topics in our Money Matters section. So there is more information than ever on financial issues and consumer advice which we hope you will find useful – see how to stop those unwanted telephone calls on page 77. Community Partnerships As usual we have also been scouting out activities and services to give you advice and help you stay in touch. And to keep you on your toes check out the special over 50s offers at the Leisure Centres – see page 15. We work with organisations that are interested in education and learning, whether in the workplace or community environment. We can support groups of learners, so for example, if you are a parent, carer or volunteer why not get together and study a course. Many groups have already chosen to study together from places like Children’s Centres, Health Centres and Voluntary/Community organisations. We are also interested in hearing from individuals who want to learn something new so contact us now for further information. Contact us katrina.coleman@open.ac.uk kim.pearson@open.ac.uk Telephone: 0191 4776100 www.open.ac.uk Inspiring Learning The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England and Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302). Golden Guide For Older People Heather Alabaster Editor This year we have been asked for copies in quite a few extra places, so as well as our regular outlets the Golden Guide will be spreading further afield. We hope this makes it easier for more people to track down. We expect they will disappear quickly, so if you still need one get hold of it whilst you can! See overleaf for a list of where the copies are going. Finally a very big thank you to all those who have generously supported the Golden Guide by sponsoring pages in it. Take a minute to check out the services they offer, then if you make contact with them, please mention that you saw them in the Golden Guide – it definitely helps! Quite a few of our sponsors will be giving out Golden Guides too – even more reason to get in touch. As always we welcome any feedback or suggestions for inclusion. Please contact me at the address overleaf if you would like to comment. 3 Our sponsors Without our generous sponsors and advertisers we would not be able to bring the Golden Guide out for free every year. So do have a look at their pages, and where you can, please tell them you found them in the Golden Guide. This will help keep the information coming, and keep it free and independent for all. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 3Score Years and 10 Aiding You Mobility Arc Barchester Care Homes BHP Law Billingham Players Broadacres Home Improvement Agency Cats at Home Clevearc Cleveland Fire Brigade CSV/RSVP Fabrick Housing Hearing Link Open University Parkinsons UK Paying for Care Reuben Manor Care Home Tees Active Tees Valley Counselling Trust Tristar Homes Wiltshire Farm Foods 4 p56 p26 p14 p62 p35 p14 p29 p14 p49 p35 p9 p26 p49 p2 p49 p53 p60 p17 p46 Back p58 Golden Guide copies are free. Short term support Short term support after a crisis aims to help you recover your independence as quickly as possible – many people only need short-term support which is provided through our reablement and intermediate care teams. 54 www.alabasterpublishing.co.uk Self-Directed Support AND PERSONAL BUDGETS If you need longer-term support, new self-directed support arrangements are designed to make sure that you stay in control. If you are assessed as needing it, you will be offered a personal budget which you can use to make arrangements in the way that best suits you. You can either manage the money yourself or ask an organisation to handle the administration for you. Or you can opt to have Adult Social Care arrange more traditional forms of support, such as help from a home care agency, attendance at a day centre, or short breaks in a care home. Even if you are not entitled to a personal budget, you can still receive advice and information about social care services from the First Contact Team, 01642 527764. Help with Pensions The State Pension age is currently 65 for men and between 60 and 65 for women, depending on their date of birth. From December 2018 State Pension age for both men and women will increase to 66 by 2020. What you get depends on the number of years of National Insurance contributions paid during your working life – 30 years for a full basic State Pension. If eligible, you may also buy missing years of NI contributions to boost the pension total. Or you may qualify for NI credits if you have been unable to pay regular contributions e.g. whilst raising a family, or as a carer. You may have other entitlements too and perhaps an occupational or personal pension. Even with these extra amounts you may still qualify for Pension Credit – a top up benefit for those with modest pensions and savings. If you only receive basic State Retirement Pension you should always ask about Pension Credit even if you have savings. 64 www.alabasterpublishing.co.uk To find out what you are entitled to contact: Future Pension Centre The Pension Service, Tyneview Park, Whitley Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE98 1BA 0845 3000 168 0845 3000 169 textphone www.direct.gov.uk/pensions In 2012 the Pension Service are updating their computer system.
