SEE WARNING ON THE COVER OF THIS INSTRUCTION. DESCRIPTION The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator is a blower assisted Air Purifying respirator referred to as a Powered Air Purifying Respirator or a PAPR. Training is required before use. The SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR is a modular design composed of replaceable subassemblies and may include certain SCOTT accessories. Each major subassembly and accessory is labeled with its SCOTT part number. In order to maintain the NIOSH approved status of the respirator, use only those subassemblies and/or accessories listed as applicable to a particular NIOSH approval number. The complete SCOTT C420 Plus respirator consists of a SCOTT full facepiece and head harness of the appropriate size to fit the user’s face, a breathing tube to connect the facepiece to the blower assembly, and a blower assembly with a fresh battery installed and fitted with two (2) matching filtration elements suitable for the expected contaminants. A belt assembly supports the blower assembly on the user’s waist. An Airflow Indicator which is used to check for minimum airflow is provided with each complete respirator. The user of this respirator must be fit tested before use to determine the model and size facepiece that gives the correct seal to the face and proper visibility for the intended use activities. Where required, a 40mm adapter assembly attaches to the inlet port of the facepiece with a quarter turn and is secured with a spring loaded retaining lock. Check valves for exhalation and inhalation are provided. Certain full facepiece includes an integral nose cup with two inhalation valves. Some include one or two voicemitter assemblies for voice communication. A net type head harness made of Kevlar®1 is available. Alternate head harnesses made of polyester or EPDM/Rubber are also available. Certain facepieces are only approved for certain protection classifications. See the APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATIONS section of this instruction for details. The SCOTT full facepieces are available in a variety of models and sizes. Users of this respirator must correctly identify which model facepiece they are using and follow the appropriate DONNING PROCEDURES. This respirator is approved for use with both the SCOTT AV-2000® and AV-3000® SureSeal™ Facepieces which both require the use of either a facepiece adapter to connect the hose, or an AV-PAPR Hose assembly which has an integral facepiece adapter. The AV-2000 facepiece has a FOUR strap head harness and the AV-3000 SureSeal facepiece has a FIVE strap head harness. This respirator is also approved for use with the SCOTT M98/ M120, Promask 40, and M95/M110 Facepieces which do not require the use of an adapter. The M98/M120 and Promask 40 have a FIVE strap head harness, and the M95/M110 Facepiece has a SIX strap head harness. The corrugated breathing tube connects the outlet of the blower assembly to the inlet of the facepiece. The breathing tube is available in long and short lengths to fit different individuals. Choose a breathing tube length that is long enough to provide a full range of motion without pulling on the facepiece, but not excessively long as to present a hazard of snagging the hose while in use. USE OF THIS RESPIRATOR WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING The breathing tube is available in long and short lengths to fit different individuals. USE OF AN IMPROPERLY FITTED BREATHING TUBE COULD RESULT IN A SITUATION WHERE THE FACEPIECE IS PULLED FROM THE USER’S FACE WHILE IN A HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. The blower assembly contains an electric motor driving an air blower. The compartment for a battery pack is located in the lower part of the blower assembly with a battery cap on a lanyard. The battery pack is available in two versions: 1. A one-time use Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide (LiSO2) battery. When properly stored, the 6 volt Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide battery is capable of extended shelf life. The LiSO2 battery is not rechargeable. 2. A reusable Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery provides an economical power source for training purposes or for regularly scheduled use. Because the two batteries are different lengths, there are two different battery caps used to retain the batteries in the battery compartment. Only the battery cap for the battery to be used should be installed on the lanyard. An ON/OFF power switch is located on the top front of the blower assembly. There are two (2) threaded inlets on the front of the blower assembly for the attachment of the filter elements. The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator utilizes two (2) filter elements. Each filter element is individually sealed. Two (2) new filter elements must be installed prior to using the PAPR. (See DISPOSAL OF USED FILTER ELEMENTS section of this instruction). The waist belt supports the blower assembly at the waist and is fully adjustable. Each C420 Plus PAPR is supplied with an Airflow Indicator which is used to check the overall ability of the respirator to provide sufficient air flow to the facepiece and to monitor battery life. The air flow must be checked before each use. It is the responsibility of the manager of the respiratory protection program under which this equipment is used to properly chose, identify, and maintain the respirator equipment for the selected protection. Part numbers for the respirator components used must appear on the approval label for the selected protection. See the APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATIONS section of this instruction. DO NOT USE THE LONG BATTERY COVER WITH THE SHORTER LiSO2 BATTERY OR THE SHORT BATTERY COVER WITH THE LONGER RECHARGEABLE NiMH BATTERY. USE OF THE INCORRECT BATTERY COVER MAY RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE RESPIRATOR BLOWER WHICH COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 THEORY OF OPERATION The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator is a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR). The user of the respirator breathes ambient air after the air has passed through a pair of filter elements. The filter elements may include a mechanical filter to trap airborne particulates or a sorbent bed of impregnated activated carbon to trap and/or neutralize various gases and vapors. Filtration elements must be selected specifically to suit the hazardous atmosphere application. The full facepiece is intended to seal against the user’s face and allows the user to breathe the air drawn through the filter elements. An inhalation check valve prevents exhaled air from entering the blower assembly. The exhalation valves allow the exhaled breath to exit the facepiece into the surrounding atmosphere. The inhalation and exhalation valves are integral to the facepiece or facepiece adapter. The blower assembly assists breathing by drawing air through the filter elements and delivering the purified air through the breathing tube to the facepiece. When the blower assembly is used with the blower switch ON, the positive pressure inside the facepiece affords the greatest level of protection to the user from the contaminants in the atmosphere. To maintain this level of protection: 1. The user must be properly fit tested to the tight fitting respirator facepiece before use. 2. The blower must be tested with the Airflow Indicator with filtration elements installed both prior to use and at prescribed intervals during use to monitor the battery life and filter element efficiency. 3. The blower must always be used with the power switch ON when the respirator is used in a contaminated atmosphere. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 Page 4 of 48 APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATIONS All models of the SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR described in these instructions conform to the requirements of Title 42 Part 84 of the Code of Federal Regulations and are certified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Each respirator configuration is approved under the appropriate approval number for the protection provided. It is the responsibility of the manager of the respiratory protection program under which this equipment is used to properly chose, identify, and maintain the respirator equipment for the selected protection. Part numbers for the respirator components used must appear on the approval label for the selected protection. For Industrial use, see the complete NIOSH approval label, SCOTT document P/N 10011889, included with these instructions to verify that the respirator components chosen are approved for the selected protection. Also see the CAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS SECTION and the SPECIFIC LIMITATIONS section of these instructions for the cautions and limitations which apply to NIOSH certified respirators of this type. Each component must be identified by its individual part number. Certain components in combination are not approved for certain applications. Specific combinations of respirator components may also qualify for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Approval Status under the NIOSH standard. See the NIOSH CBRN Approval Label, SCOTT P/N 595148-01, for a complete list of approved full facepieces and components. Before using a respirator for a CBRN application, the user must verify that the respirator is comprised of only CBRN approved components. Each component must be identified by its individual part number. Certain facepieces, adapters, breathing tubes, and filter elements are not approved for CBRN applications. Regular Operational Inspection and Use of a CBRN approved C420 Plus PAPR are essentially the same as for the same model used for an Industrial application. There may be differences defined by the user’s respiratory protection program or organization procedures for use in CBRN hazardous environments. It is the responsibility of the respirator user’s respiratory protection program to properly identify and maintain respirator equipment for CBRN applications. • The attachment of components, accessories, or devices to the SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR which are not listed on the complete NIOSH label may void the NIOSH approval and may degrade the performance of the respirator. • The attachment of components, accessories or devices not listed on the CBRN Approval Label, even if they are listed on the NIOSH approval label, may void the CBRN approval and may degrade respirator performance with respect to the CBRN approval requirements. D 9/10 LIMITATIONS ON USE 1. INTENDED USE: The SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR is intended for use as respiratory protection from airborne contaminants. 2. TRAINING REQUIRED BEFORE USE: The personnel using this respirator must have received training in accordance with their employers written respiratory program and in accordance with the requirement set forth by ANSI, OSHA and other recognized respiratory standards (see WARNING on first page of this instruction). Each individual using the respirator must also have received training in the use of the respirator including, but not limited to, pre-use check, donning, seal check, use, doffing (removal) and after use care of the respirator. 3. IDENTITY AND CONCENTRATION OF CONTAMINANT MUST BE KNOWN BEFORE USE: The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator may only be used in areas where employers have determined, by test, measurement, or other means the identity and concentration of the airborne contaminant and has determined that the filtration elements are effective in removing the contaminant from the air. 4. USE IN IMMEDIATELY DANGEROUS TO LIFE AND HEALTH (IDLH) ATMOSPHERES NOT PERMITTED: During use of this respirator, the employer must monitor the level of contaminants in the atmosphere and provide for the withdrawal of the using personnel in the event the contamination level increases to immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) levels. 5. FIT TESTING OF USERS REQUIRED BEFORE USE: Before the SCOTT C420 Plus respirator can be used, the employer must have fit tested the personnel who will be using the respirator with the appropriate full facepiece, identified the best fitting size for each individual and provided for the availability of the correct size for use by the individuals who will use the respirator. A Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) shall be performed as outlined in Appendix A and B of 29 CFR paragraph 1910.134. 6. USE WITH FACIAL HAIR NOT PERMITTED: The respirator MUST NOT be worn when conditions prevent a good face to facepiece seal. Such conditions include but are not limited to: growth of beards, sideburns, facial hair or low hairline that crosses or interferes with the sealing surface, thick or protruding hairstyles such as pony tails or buns that interfere with the smooth and close fit of the head harness to the head, a skull cap that projects under the facepiece, excessive use of cosmetics including moisturizers, make-up, or after shave, the absence of one or both dentures, or anything else which interferes with the face to facepiece seal. The employer providing the SCOTT C420 Plus respirator for use by its personnel must train the user in the importance of maintaining a good face seal. 7. USE WITH CORRECTIVE LENSES NOT PERMITTED IF THEY INTERFERE WITH SEAL: This respirator may not be used with eye glasses that include temple pieces that come between the face seal and the face. For personnel requiring corrective lenses, the full facepiece may be equipped with a lens holder kit. (Contact SCOTT or your authorized SCOTT distributor for details). Although contact lenses may be worn with the full facepiece, the decision to use or not use contact lenses should be determined by the respiratory program administrator as part of the training program. 8. INSPECTION, CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF RESPIRATOR REQUIRED: The individual using this respirator must insure the respirator is properly inspected before use, properly decontaminated after use (if necessary), properly cleaned and maintained after use, and properly stored between uses. 9. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING REQUIRED FOR USE WHEN NECESSARY: The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator protects only the face and the respiratory tract from airborne contaminants. The employer must provide the appropriate protective clothing and head wear for use with this respirator and must insure that protective clothing and head wear does not interfere with the respirator. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 Page 6 of 48 WARNING RESPIRATOR MUST BE EQUIPPED WITH FILTER ELEMENTS SUITABLE FOR THE CONTAMINANT (S) IN THE ATMOSPHERE OR LIKELY TO BE RELEASED IN THE ATMOSPHERE. FAILURE TO CHOOSE THE PROPER FILTER ELEMENTS FOR THE RESPIRATOR MAY RESULT IN THE RESPIRATOR PROVIDING LITTLE OR NO PROTECTION AGAINST THE CONTAMINATED ATMOSPHERE AND MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING THE RESPIRATOR FACEPIECE MUST BE PROPERLY FITTED TO THE USER AS PART OF THE USER TRAINING. FAILURE TO FIT THE RESPIRATOR TO THE USER MAY RESULT IN LITTLE OR NO RESPIRATORY PROTECTION AND MAY EXPOSE THE WEARER TO SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING RESPIRATORS SHALL NOT BE WORN WHEN CONDITIONS PREVENT A GOOD FACE SEAL. SUCH CONDITIONS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, GROWTH OF BEARDS, SIDEBURNS, FACIAL HAIR OR LOW HAIRLINE THAT CROSSES OR INTERFERES WITH THE SEALING SURFACE, THICK OR PROTRUDING HAIRSTYLES SUCH AS PONY TAILS OR BUNS THAT INTERFERE WITH THE SMOOTH AND CLOSE FIT OF THE HEAD HARNESS TO THE HEAD, A SKULL CAP THAT PROJECTS UNDER THE FACEPIECE, TEMPLE PIECES ON CORRECTIVE EYE GLASSES, EXCESSIVE USE OF COSMETICS INCLUDING MOISTURIZERS, MAKE-UP, OR AFTER SHAVE, OR ANYTHING ELSE WHICH INTERFERES WITH THE FACE TO FACEPIECE SEAL. ALSO, THE ABSENCE OF ONE OR BOTH DENTURES CAN SERIOUSLY AFFECT THE FIT OF A FACEPIECE. USE OF AN IMPROPERLY FITTED FACEPIECE MAY LEAD TO EXPOSURE TO THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. 10. USE IN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES NOT PERMITTED: The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator contains a battery and may not be taken into or used in atmospheres containing flammable or explosive gases, vapors, or dusts when the concentration of such contaminants constitutes a fire or explosion hazard. 11. USE OTHER THAN INTENDED USE NOT PERMITTED: Do not use the SCOTT C420 Plus respirator for fire fighting, in oxygen deficient atmospheres, or for protection against atmospheres which the filter elements do not protect against. WARNING THE BLOWER ASSEMBLY IS A BATTERY OPERATED ELECTRICAL DEVICE THAT HAS NOT BEEN EVALUATED AS AN IGNITION SOURCE. THIS DEVICE IS NOT TO BE USED IN A POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE. USE OF THE BLOWER ASSEMBLY IN A FLAMMABLE OR EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE MAY RESULT IN IGNITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. NIOSH General CAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS A - Not for use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5 percent oxygen. F - Do not use powered air purifying respirators if airflow is less than four cfm (115 lpm) for tight fitting facepieces or six cfm (170 lpm) for hoods and/or helmets. H - Follow established cartridge and canister change schedules or observe ESLI to ensure that cartridges and canisters are replaced before breakthrough occurs. I - Contains electrical parts that may cause an ignition in flammable or explosive atmospheres. J - Failure to properly use and maintain this product could result in injury or death. L - Follow the manufacturer’s User’s Instructions for changing cartridges, canister, and/or filters. M - All approved respirators shall be selected, fitted, used, and maintained in accordance with MSHA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations. N - Never substitute, modify, add, or omit parts. Use only exact replacement parts in the configuration as specified by the manufacturer O - Refer to User’s Instructions, and/or maintenance manuals for information on use and maintenance of these respirators. S - Special or critical User’s Instructions and/or specific use limitations apply. Refer to User’s Instructions before donning. BB- Not for use for entry into atmospheres immediately dangerous to life or health. CC- For entry, do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards. CBRN- Specific CAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS R - Some CBRN agents may not present immediate effects from exposure, but can result in delayed impairment, illness, or death. Y - The respirator provides respiratory protection against inhalation of radiological and nuclear dust particles. Procedures for monitoring radiation exposure and full radiation protection must be followed. Z - If during use, an unexpected hazard is encountered such as a secondary CBRN device, pockets of entrapped hazard or any unforeseen hazard, immediately leave the area for clean air GG- Direct contact with CBRN agents requires proper handling of the respirator after use. Correct disposal procedures must be followed. UU- The respirator should not be used beyond eight (8) hours after initial exposure to chemical warfare agents to avoid possibility of agent permeation. If liquid exposure is encountered, the respirator should not be used for more than two (2) hours. VV- PAPRS with TC-23C approvals may NOT be used for escape from IDLH atmospheres. These limitations are not all inclusive. The respirator manufacturer may also identify further cautions and Limitations for their respirators, US regulatory agencies may also place a limit on the use of respirators in their standards. D 9/10 FACEPIECE FITTING AND FIT TESTING A respirator Quantitative Fit Test must be performed to ensure the correct respirator facepiece size has been selected and assigned to the user. It is the responsibility of the Respiratory Protection Program Manager or Safety Coordinator to assist the user in selecting the correct respirator size relative to the user’s facial features and dimensions. Fit Testing must be performed with any approved SCOTT accessories that will be used with the respirator installed, such as a communications device installed on the facepiece. The size and style facepiece must be selected based on the user’s measured face size. Refer to NIOSH Procedure No. TEB-CBRN-APR-STP-0552, DETERMINATION OF LABORATORY RESPIRATOR PROTECTION LEVEL (LRPL) VALUES FOR CBRN TIGHT-FITTING POWERED AIRPURIFYING RESPIRATOR (PAPR), STANDARD TESTING PROCEDURE for guidance on CBRN respirator facepiece size selection. Respirator fit tests are explained fully in the American National Standard Practices for Respiratory Protection, ANSI Z88.10-2001 which is published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), 11 West 42nd Street, New York, New York, 10036, and in the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A, which is published by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 200 Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington DC, 20210. Quantitative Fit Testing per OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.134 Appendix A, or ANSI Standard Z88.10-2001 requires testing in the negative pressure mode using equipment such as a Portacount®1 Respirator Fit Tester. The Quantitative Fit Test may be conducted with the facepiece configured as a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF or, alternatively, may be configured as a Full Facepiece Air Purifying Respirator (APR). The facepiece must be properly equipped during the Quantitative Fit Test with any SCOTT approved accessories intended for use as part of the respirator (i.e. an AV-NBC Shroud, Lens Kits, and/or a communications devices and mounting brackets). See the APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATIONS section for guidance on proper accessory selection. For full facepiece that require the use of an adapter to configure as part of a C420 Plus PAPR, such as the AV-2000®, AV-3000®, Scott-O-Vista® and Weld-O-Vista™, the facepiece must be configured as a Full Facepiece Air Purifying Respirator (APR) for Quantitative Fit Test, unless equivalent probed facepieces in the full range of sizes and styles that are available would allow the facepiece to be tested as of a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF. For Quantitative Fit Testing of these Full Facepiece Air Purifying Respirator (APR), SCOTT facepieces require use of the appropriate negative pressure testing equipment such as the Portacount Respirator Fit Tester, along with the following: • SCOTT 40mm facepiece adapter, P/N 200423-01, • a new SCOTT P100 Cartridge, P/N 052683, • SCOTT Probed Fit Test Adapter P/N 805628-01 or equivalent probed facepieces and the full range of sizes and styles • Mask Seal Kit, P/N 805655-01 Refer to the Full Facepiece Air Purifying Respirator (APR) Use Instructions, SCOTT P/N 595058-01, that accompanies the SCOTT 40mm facepiece adapter for additional instructions. For full facepiece that do not require the use of an adapter to configure as part of a C420 Plus PAPR, such as the Promask 40, M95, M98, M110, and M120, the facepiece may be configured as either a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF or a Full Facepiece APR for Quantitative Fit Test. These full facepiece are equipped with two 40mm ports and the unused port may be utilized for the Quantitative Fit Test. Refer to the Use Instructions, SCOTT P/N 89449-01, that accompanies the SCOTT Probed Fit Test Adapter, P/N 805628-01, for additional installation instructions. Alternatively, equivalent probed facepieces in the full range of sizes and styles that are available would allow the facepiece to be tested as of a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF. For Quantitative Fit Testing of these full facepiece as an Air Purifying Respirator (APR), SCOTT facepieces require use of the appropriate negative pressure testing equipment such as the Portacount Respirator Fit Tester, along with the following: • a new SCOTT P100 Cartridge, P/N 052683, • SCOTT Probed Fit Test Adapter P/N 805628-01 or equivalent probed facepieces and the full range of sizes and styles For Quantitative Fit Testing of these full facepiece as a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF, SCOTT facepieces require use of the appropriate negative pressure testing equipment such as the Portacount Respirator Fit Tester, along with the following: • C420 Plus PAPR Kit, P/N 200698-30 or -36 • LiSO2 Battery, P/N 805358-01, or NiMH Battery, P/N 31001504 (and Charger), along with appropriate Battery Cap. • Two (2) SCOTT Filters, Cartridges or Canisters appropriate for the intended use. • SCOTT Probed Fit Test Adapter P/N 805628-01 or equivalent probed facepieces and the full range of sizes and styles The size and style facepiece must be selected based on the user’s measured face size. For initial fitting, carefully don the facepiece and conduct a NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST, referring to the DONNING PROCEDURE section of this instruction if fit testing with a C420 Plus PAPR with the blower OFF, or to the DONNING PROCEDURE section of the SCOTT 40mm Facepiece Adapter Use Instructions, P/N 595058-01, if fit testing as a Full Facepiece APR. Follow the DONNING PROCEDURE CAREFULLY. If the selected facepiece does not pass the NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK 1 Portacount ® is a registered trademark of TSI Incorporated P/N 595130-01 Rev. WARNING LEAK TESTS MUST BE PERFORMED WITH THE BLOWER TURNED OFF. TEST, or does not fit securely without movement in the chin or chin cup area, or the user experiences discomfort in the chin or throat, try the next nearest size, larger or smaller. After passing the NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST, the facepiece size selected must be verified by successfully passing a respirator Quantitative Fit Test. When intending to use an appropriately configured C420 Plus PAPR for only Industrial applications, SCOTT requires that the user must be able to achieve a minimum Fit Factor equal to or greater than 250 minimum with the selected full facepiece. When intending to use an appropriately configured C420 Plus PAPR for CBRN applications, SCOTT requires that the user must be able to achieve a minimum Fit Factor equal to or greater than 2000 minimum with the selected full facepiece. These Fit Factors must be achieved whether fit testing in a Full Facepiece Air Purifying Respirator configuration or in a C420 Plus PAPR configuration. If fit testing in a C420 Plus PAPR configuration, the minimum Fit Factors must be achieved with the blower OFF. If the respective Fit Factors cannot be achieved with any facepiece size or style, the user MUST NOT use this respirator. The minimum fit factor requirement of equal to or greater than 2000 for CBRN PAPR applications is the lowest acceptable threshold established in NIOSH Procedure No. TEB-CBRN-APR-STP-0552, DETERMINATION OF LABORATORY RESPIRATOR PROTECTION LEVEL (LRPL) VALUES FOR CBRN TIGHT-FITTING POWERED AIR-PURIFYING RESPIRATOR (PAPR), STANDARD TESTING PROCEDURE. When using a Portacount Respirator Fit Tester for Quantitative Fit Testing, TSI recommends that the level of particles in the ambient air must be between 5000 and 30000 particles/cm3. Refer to the Portacount Respirator Fit Tester user instructions for details including available Particle Generators to use with the Portacount Respirator Fit Tester if you have difficulty achieving the minimum level of ambient particle count required. Test subjects must be in good health at the time of the fit testing. Smoking or eating less than 30 minutes prior to the test is prohibited. Any and all conditions that might interfere with a good face to facepiece seal must be addressed and corrected before performing the fit testing. Refer to the list of conditions in the DONNING PROCEDURES section of this instruction. To verify the fit factor of the respirator, testing must incorporate an exercise regimen of normal daily activities. SCOTT requires the following set of fit test exercises, which are based on OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.134 Appendix A, and ANSI Z88.10-2001 with modifications. Exercises are to be performed each for 60 seconds (except as noted) in a standing position during the test: • Normal Breathing • Deep breathing • Turning head side to side • Moving head up and down (look up/look down) • Talking (read the Rainbow Passage) •Grimace (15 seconds) •Bending Over (touch toes) / Reach up (toward the ceiling) • Normal Breathing (repeat) Fit test exercises must be performed carefully as if the respirator was being used in a hazardous atmosphere. DO NOT bump the facepiece, filter, or adapter into the body through exaggerated motions. DO NOT talk except when directed to by the test administrator. If the respirator user passes a NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST but DOES NOT pass a respirator Quantitative Fit Test, try the next nearest size, larger or smaller and repeat the NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST and the Quantitative Fit Test. If testing an AV-2000®, AV-3000®, Scott-O-Vista® and Weld-O-Vista™ full facepiece, and leakage is still detected, either per these user instructions or the OSHA fit testing process, the use of Mask Seal Kit P/N 805655-01 may be required to attain a proper fit. Refer to the INSTALLATION AND USE INSTRUCTIONS, SCOTT P/N 89462-01, included with the Mask Seal Kit. After installing the Mask Seal Kit, repeat the fit testing process to confirm a proper fit. If leakage is still detected, do not use the respirator. Once the proper size is selected and assigned to the user following successful Portacount Respirator Fit Tester testing to achieve minimum Fit Factors required, the respirator user must perform and pass a NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST every time the facepiece is donned to ensure proper fit before using the respirator in a hazardous atmosphere. During NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TESTING, any facepiece leakage that is detected from other than the face to facepiece seal may indicate damaged or defective equipment. Remove the defective equipment from service and tag for repair by authorized personnel. Repeat the testing with equipment known to be operating properly. IF A SATISFACTORY NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST CANNOT BE PERFORMED, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR OR ENTER THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE. The facepiece alone does not provide any protection against a hazardous atmosphere without the use of the complete C420 Plus PAPR with the proper filtration media attached. A respirator Quantitative Fit Test must be routinely carried out as outlined above for each user of this respirator to determine or confirm the amount of protection that the respirator provides. Periodically repeating the fit testing is required to identify any physical changes of the user (such as those listed in the DONNING PROCEDURES) which could affect the fit of the facepiece. SUCH CONDITIONS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, facial hair such as growth of beard or sideburns, or low hairline that crosses or interferes with the sealing surface, thick or protruding hairstyles such as pony tails or buns that interfere with the smooth and close fit of the head harness to the head, A SKULL CAP THAT PROJECTS UNDER THE FACEPIECE, OR TEMPLE PIECES ON GLASSES. ALSO, THE ABSENCE OF ONE OR BOTH DENTURES CAN SERIOUSLY AFFECT THE FIT OF A FACEPIECE. USE OF AN IMPROPERLY FITTED FACEPIECE MAY LEAD TO EXPOSURE TO THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 HANDLING AND CHARGING THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY SCOTT C420 Plus Battery Charger, P/N 200703-01, is intended for charging only the rechargeable batteries used with the SCOTT C420 Plus Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR). Always verify that the part number of the battery you are charging is listed on the NIOSH approval label for the particular SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR you are using. Use of a non-approved battery or battery charger will void the NIOSH approval. Handle all batteries with care. • Do not accidentally short circuit the contacts. • Do not incinerate or expose the battery to temperatures above 158°F/70°C. • Do not puncture or attempt to disassemble the battery. • Do not attempt to recharge a LiSO2 battery. The LiSO2 battery is not a rechargeable battery. • Refer to the DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction for details of disposal. Failure to follow these instructions or any other misuse of this battery may result in overheating of the battery pack which may cause a fire or leakage of corrosive electrolyte from the battery which may cause serious injury or death. This unit charges one rechargeable battery at one time. There is a single charger plug and a single indicator light on the top of the charger. The AC power cord supplied with this charger fits a standard regulated 120VAC-60Hz outlet. Charge batteries only in an area with an atmosphere known to be non-hazardous. The temperature range must be between 32º and 100º F (0º and 38º C). Batteries that are used regularly should be recharged after use, usually overnight before use. New rechargeable batteries and rechargeable batteries that have been stored for two to three months without use must be “Conditioned” before use. Refer to the RECHARGEABLE BATTERY CONDITIONING section of this instruction for details. Charge a rechargeable battery as follows: 1. Before charging, inspect the battery for signs of damage. Do not use any battery which exhibits bulging, swelling, or irregularity. See DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. 2. Place the Charger on a flat surface and plug the AC power cord into a standard regulated 120VAC-60Hz outlet. DO NOT allow anything to touch and short out the metal contacts inside the battery charger plug, as doing so could result in damage to the battery charger. 3. The rechargeable battery has a keyed charging receptacle on one end. Align the charger plug with the receptacle and push the plug fully into the receptacle. See FIGURE 1. CONNECTOR IS KEYED TO FIT ONE WAY WARNING USE THE BATTERY CHARGER EQUIPMENT ONLY ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING HANDLE THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY WITH CARE. Failure to follow the instructions and warning statements in THIS manual, or any other misuse of this battery may result in overheating of the battery pack which may cause a fire or leakage of corrosive electrolyte from the battery which may cause serious injury or death. WARNING THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINALS ARE THE TWO CONCENTRIC RINGS ON THE END OF THE BATTERY OPPOSITE FROM THE END OF THE BATTERY WITH THE CHARGING RECEPTACLE. DO NOT PERMIT ANYTHING TO TOUCH THE TWO RINGS AND SHORT OUT THE BATTERY. SHORTING OUT THE BATTERY COULD CAUSE THE BATTERY TO OVERHEAT, EXPLODE, OR BURN WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. CAUTION DO NOT ALLOW THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK TO FULLY DISCHARGE. The functional system operational time for the battery pack is approximately 4 hours. Operating the system in excess of 4 hours results in significantly reduced airflow. Refer to the instruction manual for the respiratory protective blower for additional information on the system operation. CAUTION Do not disconnect the RECHARGEABLE battery by twisting to the side, as this could damage or break either the charger plug or the connector on the battery. FIGURE 1 P/N 595130-01 Rev. In a normal discharged condition (after approximately four (4) hours of operational use), the battery will require approximately eight (8) hours to reach a full charge. Batteries that still have a partial charge when placed in the charger will require less time to reach full charge. Refer to the CHARGER ILLUMINATION SEQUENCE chart below for details of the operation of the charger light. 5. If the indicator light glows RED/GREEN (alternating), there is a fault condition. Remove the battery immediately. If the same lights glow with another battery connected, remove the charger from service and replace. Otherwise, the fault is with the battery. Dispose of the battery according to the DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. 6. When the light glows GREEN/ORANGE (alternating), the battery is nearly charged and the charger has switched to the “top off charge” mode. IF THE BATTERY CHARGER LIGHTS DO NOT PERFORM AS DESCRIBED, REMOVE THE BATTERY CHARGER AND BATTERY FROM SERVICE UNTIL THE PROBLEM CAN BE IDENTIFIED. IF THE CHARGER PERFORMS PROPERLY WITH A SECOND BATTERY, THE FIRST BATTERY MAY BE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE DISPOSED OF ACCORDING TO STATE OR FEDERAL GUIDELINES. IF THE CHARGER IS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE, REMOVE IT FROM SERVICE AND TAG FOR REPLACEMENT. USE OF A DEFECTIVE BATTERY OR BATTERY CHARGER MAY RESULT IN A SITUATION THAT COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. NOTE THE ORANGE LIGHT IS A COMBINATION OF THE GREEN AND YELLOW LIGHTS THAT APPEARS ORANGE FROM A DISTANCE. AT CLOSE RANGE THE INDIVIDUAL LIGHTS MAY BE VISIBLE. 7. When the battery reaches a full charge, the charger indicator light will glow GREEN and the charger will change to a trickle charge mode. Batteries can be left in the trickle charge mode indefinitely. 8. When finished, disconnect it from the charger plug. To remove the battery from the charger plug, grasp the battery firmly and pull straight back away from the charger plug. Do not twist the battery to the side. RECHARGEABLE BATTERY CONDITIONING ON NEXT PAGE... Page 11 of 48 P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 RECHARGEABLE Battery Conditioning Before use in the C420 Plus PAPR, the rechargeable battery must be “Conditioned” to maximize its performance and assure full duration with each use. Always perform this procedure with new batteries. Rechargeable batteries that have not been used for two to three months must be reconditioned before placing back in service. To condition a battery, it must be charged and discharged according to the following procedure. NOTE FILTERS MUST BE REMOVED FOR THIS PROCEDURE 1. Inspect the PAPR Airflow Indicator P/N 805374-01 to verify that the O-ring is in good condition. Red ball shall move freely within the column. 2. Insert the PAPR Airflow Indicator P/N 805374-01 into the blower assembly air outlet until it bottoms out on shoulder. See FIGURE 2. PUSH IN AIRFLOW INDICATOR UNTIL IT BOTTOMS OUT ON SHOULDER WHEN RED BALL DROPS BELOW THE LINE, REMOVE THE BATTERY AND RECHARGE WARNING HANDLE THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY WITH CARE. POSITION UNIT WITH AIRFLOW INDICATOR VERTICAL AND ON TOP AS SHOWN FIGURE 2 AIRFLOW INDICATOR 3. Install a battery that has been fully charged according to the BATTERY CHARGING section of this instruction. Install the battery as follows: a) Verify that the battery has been fully charged according to the BATTERY CHARGING section of this instruction. b) Inspect the fully charged battery for signs of damage. Do not use any battery which exhibits bulging, swelling, disfigurement, or which emits an irritating, choking, or biting odor or an odor of rotten eggs. See DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. c) Insure that blower switch is set to OFF position. d) Remove the GREEN BATTERY COVER on the blower assembly by turning counterclockwise. Battery cover has a lanyard to prevent loss. e). Install the battery into the battery compartment in the blower assembly with contact end first. An orientation label is just inside the battery compartment. See FIGURE 3. P/N 595130-01 Rev. Install the GREEN BATTERY COVER by threading clockwise onto the blower assembly. Tighten hand tight. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. 4. Turn C420 Plus PAPR power switch ON. 5. Position the blower assembly unit in an upright position on a horizontal surface so that the Airflow Indicator is approximately vertical as shown in FIGURE 2. Observe reading on PAPR Airflow Indicator. The red ball shall rise to the top of the PAPR AIR FLOW INDICATOR (FIGURE 2). 6. Run the C420 Plus PAPR approximately three hours. 7. After three hours, begin to watch the red ball. When the red ball drops below the line marked on the outside of the column, turn the blower OFF, remove the battery. 8. Recharge the battery according to the battery charging section of this instruction 9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 two more times. After the third recharge, the battery will be fully conditioned for optimum performance. 10. After successful completion of the BATTERY CONDITIONING, turn the power switch to OFF position, remove the Airflow Indicator and place the C420 Plus PAPR and the fully charged battery into service. Refer to the USER INSTRUCTIONS provided with your C420 Plus PAPR. Page 13 of 48 BE SURE SWITCH IS SET TO OFF POSITION BEFORE REMOVING OR REPLACING THE BATTERY. Failure to follow these instructions or any other misuse of THE LiSO2 battery may result in overheating of the battery pack which may cause a fire, violent venting of sulfur dioxide (poison) gas, or leakage of corrosive electrolyte from the battery which may cause serious injury or death. Failure to follow the instructions and warning statements in THIS manual, or any other misuse of this battery may result in overheating of the battery pack which may cause a fire, violent venting of sulfur dioxide (poison) gas, or leakage of corrosive electrolyte from the battery which may cause serious injury or death. REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION Always inspect and clean a new respirator before the first use. Clean the Facepiece and Breathing Tube according to the CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE section of this instruction. Respirators issued for emergency use MUST be inspected at least every 30 days to verify the respirator is complete, operational, and undamaged. If any damage is found, remove the respirator from service and tag for repair by authorized personnel. INSPECTION OF THE FACEPIECE The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator may be used with a variety of SCOTT full facepieces. The essential operation of all full facepieces is the same, but certain features are applied differently depending the style of full facepiece. FACEPIECE IDENTIFICATION To be configured as part of a C420 Plus respirator, the range of SCOTT full facepieces may be divided into two basic styles: those that must be used WITH ADAPTER, and those that must be used WITHOUT ADAPTER. During facepiece fitting and training, become thoroughly familiar with the facepiece with which you are fitted. Examine the facepiece assembly for damaged or worn components. The facepiece must be complete and in serviceable condition with no worn, loose, or damaged components. 1. Inspect the facepiece seal and other rubber components for deformation, wear, damage, or cracks. 2. Inspect the lens for cracks, gouges, scratches, or any condition that could impair the operation of the facepiece or the user’s vision. 3. Look for any signs of damage to the facepiece ports where the breathing tube attaches. 4. Inspect the lens frame or bezel for damage such as cracks or distortion. Check that all lens frame retainers or bezel screws are present and installed correctly. 5. Inspect the head harness for damage or worn components. Inspect the head harness for correct installation with all straps oriented correctly. Check that all harness anchors are present and operating properly. Adjust the head straps to the full outward position. 6. Inspect the voicemitter for damage. Verify that the voicemitter is properly installed and secure. 7. All facepieces used with this respirator must be fitted with a nose cup, with the exception of the Scott-O-Vista® for which the nose cup is optional. Verify that the nose cup is properly installed for the model for the model of facepiece being used. Inspect the nose cup for cuts or damage. See specific NOSE CUP instructions below for facepieces that must be used WITH ADAPTER. 8. Verify that the facepiece is clean. P/N 595130-01 Rev. REMOVE THE RESPIRATOR FROM SERVICE AND TAG IT FOR REPAIR BY AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. FAILURE TO PROPERLY IDENTIFY DAMAGE OR MALFUNCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING THE EXHALATION VALVE MUST BE CLEAN AND MUST SEAL PROPERLY BEFORE USE OF THE RESPIRATOR. FAILURE TO VERIFY THAT THE EXHALATION VALVE IS SEALING PROPERLY MAY RESULT IN THE RESPIRATOR PROVIDING LITTLE OR NO PROTECTION AGAINST THE CONTAMINATED ATMOSPHERE WHICH MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. FACEPIECES WITH ADAPTER SCOTT full facepieces such as the AV-2000®, AV-3000®, Scott-O-Vista® and Weld-O-Vista™ must be used WITH ADAPTER to configure the full facepiece as part of a complete C420 Plus PAPR Respirator. The 40mm adapter (SCOTT P/N 805059-01) is used with the 30” or 36” breathing tubes (SCOTT P/N 200700-30 or -36). The AV-PAPR Hose (SCOTT P/N 200829-30 or -36) is an integral adapter and hose, also available in 30” and 36” lengths. Please refer to the NIOSH approval label, SCOTT document P/N 10011889, and/or the CBRN approval label, SCOTT document P/N 595148-01, to determine the approved configuration(s). • The AV-2000 style facepieces include the AV-2000, the Weld-O-Vista, and the Scott-O-Vista (the Scott-O-Vista does not have voicemitters). • The AV-3000 style facepieces include the AV-3000 and the AV-3000 SureSeal. 1. Check that the nose cup is properly seated between the flanges of the voicemitter ducts. See FIGURE 4. Verify that the Nose Cup is properly installed for the model of facepiece being used. A Nose Cup is standard on the SCOTT AV-2000, Weld-O-Vista, and all AV-3000 full facepieces, and optional on the Scott-O-Vista full facepiece. a) SCOTT AV-3000 style Facepieces are available with two different styles of nose cup: a BLACK Nose Cup which fits behind the face seal, and a GRAY Nose Cup which fits in front of the face seal. The BLACK Nose cup must be fitted BEHIND the Face Seal as shown in FIGURE 5. The GRAY Nose Cup must be fitted IN FRONT OF the Face Seal as shown in FIGURE 6. D 9/10 Page 16 of 48 FACEPIECES WITHOUT ADAPTER Scott full facepieces such as the Promask 40, M95, M98, M110, and M120 are used WITHOUT ADAPTER to configure the full facepiece as part of a complete C420 Plus PAPR Respirator. The 30” or 36” breathing tubes (SCOTT P/N 200700-30 or -36) connect directly to these full facepieces. Inspect the facepiece WITHOUT ADAPTER as follows: 1. Look for any signs of damage to the facepiece ports where the Breathing Tube attaches. 2. Verify that the inhalation valve/valve seat is in good condition. 3. Check the inhalation valve for proper installation and any evidence of damage. Valve must lie flat and have no wrinkles that would prevent sealing. Check the inhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean or replace the valve as needed before use. 4. Check the exhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean the valve as needed before use. To check the exhalation valve (on the M110 or M120 Facepiece), refer to FIGURE 8 and proceed as follows: a) Unscrew the outer exhalation valve cover from the front of the facepiece and remove the exhalation valve assembly. b) Remove the exhalation valve holder which snaps into the outer exhalation valve cover. (There is no need to remove the O-Ring on the back of the holder.) c) Check the exhalation valve for proper installation and any evidence of damage. Valve must lie flat and have no wrinkles that would prevent sealing. Check the exhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean or replace the valve as needed before use. d) Snap the exhalation valve holder back into the outer exhalation valve cover and tightly screw the assembly back into the front of the facepiece. Tighten hand tight. Use no tools to tighten. O-RING WARNING THE EXHALATION VALVE MUST BE CLEAN AND MUST SEAL PROPERLY BEFORE USE OF THE RESPIRATOR. FAILURE TO VERIFY THAT THE EXHALATION VALVE IS SEALING PROPERLY MAY RESULT IN THE RESPIRATOR PROVIDING LITTLE OR NO PROTECTION AGAINST THE CONTAMINATED ATMOSPHERE WHICH MAY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. EXHALATION VALVE HOLDER EXHALATION VALVE OUTER EXHALATION VALVE COVER EXHALATION VALVE ASSEMBLY FIGURE 8 THIS ILLUSTRATION APPLIES TO THE M95/M110 AND M98/M120 STYLE FACEPIECES. INSPECTION OF THE BREATHING TUBE Inspect the 30” or 36” breathing tube (SCOTT P/N 200700-30 or -36). If any missing parts or damage are found, remove the breathing tube from service and tag for repair by authorized personnel. Inspect as follows: 1. Remove the plastic caps from both ends of the breathing tube assembly. Retain these caps for future use. 2. Examine breathing tube for cracks, tears, or leaks. 3. Inspect the gasket inside of the threaded connector. If gasket is damaged or missing, remove the breathing tube from service and tag for replacement. Page 17 of 48 P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 INSPECTION OF THE 40mm ADAPTER Inspect the 40mm Adapter (SCOTT P/N 805059-01). If any missing parts or damage are found, remove the 40mm Adapter from service and tag for repair by authorized personnel. Inspect as follows: 1. Verify that the seal on the back INSPECT of the 40mm Adapter is in good LOCKING SEAL condition. See FIGURE 9. CLIP FIGURE 9 INSPECT VALVES 2. Inspect the inhalation valve for proper installation and any evidence of damage as follows: a) Check the inhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean or replace the valve as needed before use. b) Valve must lie flat and have no wrinkles that would prevent sealing. 3. Inspect the exhalation valve as follows: a) Carefully remove the Exhalation Valve Cover using the tab on the edge of the cover. Lift the tab and snap off the cover. b) Check the exhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean the valve as needed before use. c) When finished, snap the Exhalation Valve Cover back on. 4. Verify the Locking Clip is operating correctly and that it always springs back to the lock position. 5. Inspect the gasket in the 40mm connector (where the Breathing tube will connect). If the gasket is damaged or missing, remove the 40mm Adapter from service and tag for repair or replacement. See FIGURE 10. D 9/10 Page 18 of 48 INSPECTION OF THE AV-PAPR HOSE Inspect the AV-PAPR Hose Assembly (SCOTT P/N 200829-30 or -36) is a breathing tube with an integral facepiece adapter. If any missing parts or damage are found, remove the AV-PAPR Hose Assembly from service and tag for repair by authorized personnel. Inspect as follows: 1. Verify that the seal on the back of the facepiece adapter is in good condition. See FIGURE 11. INSPECT SEAL LOCKING CLIP FIGURE 11 INSPECT VALVES INSPECT BOOT 2. Inspect the inhalation valve for proper installation and any evidence of damage as follows: a) Check the inhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean or replace the valve as needed before use. b) Valve must lie flat and have no wrinkles that would prevent sealing. 3. Inspect the exhalation valve as follows: a) Carefully lift the top edge of the Hose Boot up and off the adapter body. Bend the Boot forward just enough to access the Exhalation Valve. b) Check the exhalation valve for dirt or debris which might interfere with the seal of the valve. Clean the valve as needed before use. c) Return the Hose Boot to its original position with the top edge fitted over the adapter body. The Hose Boot must fit flush with the round adapter seal. 4. Inspect the Hose Boot for cracks or damage. Verify that it is properly installed around the right angle connector and over the top and bottom of the adapter body. 5. Verify the Locking Clip is operating correctly and that it always springs back to the lock position. LOCKING 6. If installed, remove the plastic cap from CLIP the end of the breathing tube. Retain this cap for future use. 7. Examine the breathing tube for cracks, tears, or leaks. 8. Inspect the gasket inside of the threaded connector. If the gasket is damaged or missing, remove the AV-PAPR Hose INSPECT Assembly from service and tag for GASKET replacement. See FIGURE 12. FIGURE 12 AV-PAPR HOSE P/N 200829-30 or -36 Page 19 of 48 P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION CONTINUED... INSPECTION OF THE BLOWER ASSEMBLY NOTE USE A TEST BATTERY AND A PAIR OF TEST FILTERS DESIGNATED FOR REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION. USE ONLY THE TYPE OF BATTERY THAT THE BLOWER UNIT IS SET UP FOR: • IF THE BLACK SHORT BATTERY COVER IS INSTALLED ON THE LANYARD, USE A DESIGNATED LiSO2 BATTERY FOR A TEST BATTERY; • IF THE LONG GREEN BATTERY COVER IS INSTALLED ON THE LANYARD, USE A FULLY CHARGED RECHARGEABLE BATTERY for the TEST BATTERY. For the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION, do not open the sealed pouches containing the filter elements or the sealed LiSO2 battery that are intended for actual use. Each filter element and the battery should be sealed until the respirator is made ready for actual use. Handle all batteries with care. Refer to the HANDLING AND CHARGING RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES and the HANDLING LITHIUM-SULFUR DIOXIDE BATTERIES sections of this instruction for details. Inspect the operation of the blower unit as follows: 1. Inspect the blower unit for damage such as cracks or missing components. If any damage is found, do not use the respirator. 2. Install the Test Battery as follows: a) Insure that blower switch is set to OFF position. b) Remove battery cover on blower assembly by turning counterclockwise. Battery cover has a lanyard to prevent loss. c) Inspect the designated Test Battery for signs of damage. Do not use any battery which exhibits bulging, swelling, disfigurement, or which emits an irritating, choking, or biting odor or an odor of rotten eggs. See DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. d) Install the Test Battery into the battery compartment in the blower assembly with the contact end first. An orientation label is just inside battery compartment. See FIGURE 13. Replace the battery cover by threading clockwise onto blower assembly. Install filter elements on blower assembly as follows: a) Remove the two (2) protective plastic caps from blower assembly inlets. Retain these caps for future use. b) Inspect the gaskets in each of the filter element ports. See FIGURE 14. If either gasket is damaged or missing, replace with SCOTT P/N 10011051. Do not use a blower assembly if either of the two (2) gaskets are missing or damaged. Leakage may occur at these connections. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 Page 20 of 48 WARNING VERIFY THAT THE CORRECT BATTERY COVER IS BEING USED WITH THE SELECTED BATTERY. DO NOT USE THE LONG BATTERY COVER WITH THE SHORTER LiSO2 BATTERY OR THE SHORT BATTERY COVER WITH THE LONGER RECHARGEABLE NiMH BATTERY. USE OF THE INCORRECT BATTERY COVER MAY RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE RESPIRATOR BLOWER WHICH COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. WARNING HANDLE BATTERIES WITH CARE. FILTER ELEMENTS (2) INSPECT (2) GASKETS P/N 10011051 FIGURE 14 FILTER ELEMENT INSTALLATION c) Attach both Test Filter elements to the blower assembly by threading into the inlet ports until hand tight. TIGHTEN HAND TIGHT. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. 4. Check the operation of the blower fan with the Airflow Indicator as follows: a) Inspect the PAPR Airflow Indicator P/N 805374-01 to verify that O-ring is in good condition. Red ball shall move freely within column. b) Insert the PAPR Airflow Indicator P/N 805374-01 into the blower assembly air outlet until it bottoms out on shoulder. See FIGURE 15. c) Position unit in upright position so that Airflow Indicator is vertical on top of blower assembly as shown in FIGURE 15. POSITION UNIT WITH AIRFLOW INDICATOR VERTICAL AND ON TOP AS SHOWN PUSH IN AIRFLOW INDICATOR UNTIL IT BOTTOMS OUT ON SHOULDER ACCEPTABLE FLOW INDICATED WHEN RED BALL IS ABOVE LINE FIGURE 15 PAPR AIRFLOW INDICATOR P/N 805374-01 d) Turn C420 Plus PAPR power switch ON. e) Support the blower assembly on a horizontal surface so that the Airflow Indicator is approximately vertical. Acceptable performance shall be indicated by the position of the red ball being above the line marked on the outside of the column on the PAPR Airflow Indicator (FIGURE 15). (With fresh filter elements and a new battery, the red ball should rise nearly to the top of the Airflow Indicator.) If the red ball does not go to the top of the Airflow Indicator when power switch is ON, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR. 5. After successful completion of the air flow test, turn the power switch to OFF position and remove the Airflow Indicator. Proceed to the INSPECTION OF THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY section of this instruction. Page 21 of 48 REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE... P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION CONTINUED... INSPECTION OF THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY Perform the following inspection to verify the operation of all components of the PAPR assembly. If the respirator does not perform as described, remove the respirator from service and tag for repair. 1. For FACEPIECES WITH ADAPTER, install either the 40mm adapter or the AV-PAPR Hose assembly on the respirator facepiece as follows: a) Verify that the seal on the back of the facepiece adapter is in good condition. b) On Adapter P/N 805059-01, inspect the gasket in the 40mm connector. c) Align the two flat edges of the bayonet mount on the facepiece adapter with the matching flats on the clear mounting adapter on the front of the facepiece. d) Rotate the adapter 90 degrees until the locking mechanism is aligned between the notches in the facepiece lens. On some models the locking clip is spring loaded and will snap in when aligned, while on older models the locking clip must be pushed into the notch to secure. e) Final orientation shall be as shown in FIGURE 16A or 16B. f) For Adapter P/N 805059-01, thread the 90 degree male end of Breathing Tube into the threaded port until hand tight. Do not over tighten. 2. For FACEPIECES WITHOUT ADAPTER, thread the 90 degree male end of Breathing Tube into the threaded facepiece port until hand tight. Do not over tighten. 3. With the test filters still installed, thread the inlet end of the Breathing Tube or AV-PAPR Hose assembly onto the air outlet on the top of the blower unit. Tighten hand tight. Do not over tighten. 4. Turn the Blower Assembly ON and verify that the inhalation valve in the facepiece/adapter opens with the flow of air from the blower. 5. Hold the facepiece up to the face and verify that the exhalation valve opens and that air flows out of the facepiece. Turn the blower Assembly OFF. 6. Remove the Test Filters and store them for future use. Disconnect the breathing tube from the Facepiece and the Blower Assembly. Replace all plastic caps in the inlets and outlet of the blower assembly and in both ends of the breathing tube. 7. Remove the Test Battery. If using a Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide battery for a Test Battery, place the battery in a sealed plastic bag to protect until the next usage. 8. Store the respirator in its according to the CLEANING AND STORAGE section of this instruction. Locate the respirator and all necessary components ready for use in accordance with the procedures of your respiratory protection program. P/N 595130-01 Rev. FACEPIECES WITH ADAPTER SCOTT full facepieces such as the AV-2000® or AV-3000®, the Scott-O-Vista®, and Weld-O-Vista™ require the use of either a 40mm adapter (SCOTT P/N 805059-01) or the AV-PAPR Hose assembly (SCOTT P/N 200829-30 or -36) which is a hose with an integral adapter. Install on the respirator facepiece as follows: 1. Verify that the seal on the back of the facepiece adapter is in good condition. 2. On P/N 805059-01, verify the gasket in the 40mm connector is present and in good condition. 3. On P/N 200829-30 or -36, verify the gasket in the Breathing Tube connector is present and in good condition. 4. Align the two flat edges of the bayonet mount on the facepiece adapter with the matching flats on the clear mounting adapter on the front of the facepiece. 5. Rotate the adapter 90 degrees until the locking mechanism is aligned between the notches in the facepiece lens. On some models the locking clip is spring loaded and will snap in when aligned, while on older models the locking clip must be pushed into the notch to secure. 6. Final orientation shall be as shown in FIGURE 16A or 16B. Refer to the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION section of this instructions. Also refer to the User Instructions provided with those facepieces for complete details of inspection and maintenance. Inspect the threaded connector of the facepiece without adapter as follows: 1. Verify that the inhalation valve/valve seat is in good condition. 2. The inhalation valve/valve seat also serves as the gasket in the threaded conPREPARATION FOR USE nector. Verify that it is clean and properly installed. CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE... If using a facepiece with the 805059-01 ADAPTER, or a facepiece WITHOUT ADAPTER, connect the 90 degree connection of the Breathing Tube Assembly (P/N 200700-30 or -36) into the 40mm threaded opening on the adapter or facepiece as described below. a) If present, remove the plastic cap from the male threads on the 90 degree connection of the Breathing Tube Assembly. Retain this cap for future use. b) Thread the 90 degree male end of breathing tube into the threaded connector on the Adapter or Facepiece. Tighten hand tight only. Do not over tighten. 2. If present, remove the plastic cap from the female threads on the other end of the Breathing Tube Assembly or AV-PAPR Hose Assembly. Thread the inlet end of the Breathing Tube Assembly or AV-PAPR Hose Assembly onto the air outlet on the top of the blower unit. Tighten hand tight only. Do not over tighten. 3. Install filter elements on blower assembly as follows: a) Verify that the selected filter elements are approved SCOTT filters appropriate for the application and that they are still within their expiration date. It may be necessary to remove the filter elements from their protective packaging to determine this. Filter elements are considered to have been put in service when they are removed from their sealed packaging. NOTE DO not open sealed package until filter elements are needed for use. Service life of filter elements begins when they are removed from the sealed package. b) Remove two (2) protective plastic caps from blower assembly inlets. Retain these caps for future use. c) Inspect the gaskets in each of the filter element ports. See FIGURE 17. If either gasket is damaged or missing, replace with SCOTT P/N 10011051. Do not use a blower assembly if either of the two (2) gaskets are missing or damaged. Leakage may occur at these connections. WARNING USE ONLY SCOTT APPROVED FILTER ELEMENTS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THE APPLICATION. USE OF UNAPPROVED OR INAPPROPRIATE FILTER ELEMENTS MAY EXPOSE THE WEARER TO SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. TIGHTEN FIRMLY BUT DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. 4. If Belt Assembly P/N 805359-01 is not installed, attach the belt assembly to the blower assembly as follows: a) Note the lacing path of the belt through the male buckle and remove the male buckle and keeper loops from the end of the belt. b) Thread the belt through the two (2) belt loops on the blower assembly. c) Replace the keeper loops and lace the male buckle back onto the belt. Install the battery as follows: NOTE BE SURE THE BATTERY COVER ON THE LANYARD IS CORRECT FOR THE BATTERY BEING USED: – BLACK SHORT CAP FOR LiSO2 BATTERY – GREEN LONG CAP FOR THE NiMH RECHARGEABLE BATTERY. a) Insure that blower switch is set to OFF position. b) Remove battery cover on blower assembly by turning counterclockwise. Battery cover has a lanyard to prevent loss. c) Inspect battery for signs of damage. Do not use any battery which exhibits bulging, swelling, disfigurement, or which emits an irritating, choking, or biting odor or an odor of rotten eggs. See DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. d) Install the battery into the battery compartment in blower assembly with contact end first. An orientation label is just inside battery compartment. DONNING PROCEDURES Donning the respirator and checking for a proper face to facepiece seal must be done in an area known to be free of contaminants. The respirator user must have received training and have practiced this procedure before attempting to use the respirator for respiratory protection. 1. Examine the SCOTT full facepiece to be certain it is complete and in serviceable condition. Check that the inhalation and exhalation valves are properly installed and operational. 2. Examine the Breathing Tube Assembly or AV-PAPR Hose Assembly to verify that it is properly connected to both the mask and the blower assembly. Also verify that the selected assembly is the proper length for the user. 3. Examine filter elements to verify that they are properly installed to the blower assembly. 4. Turn power switch of the PAPR to ON position to confirm that battery is installed and blower is working. Turn power switch OFF. 5. Don the waist belt with blower assembly so the breathing tube outlet is located at the top of the unit. Fasten the buckle and adjust the waist belt. See FIGURE 19. FIGURE 19 DONNING THE PAPR WARNING The breathing tube AND AV-PAPR HOSE ASSEMBLIES ARE available in long and short lengths to fit different individuals. Choose a length that is long enough to provide a full range of motion without pulling on the facepiece, but not excessively long as to present a hazard of snagging the hose while in use. USE OF AN IMPROPERLY FITTED BREATHING TUBE OR AV-PAPR HOSE ASSEMBLY COULD RESULT IN A SITUATION WHERE THE FACEPIECE IS PULLED FROM THE USER’S FACE WHILE IN A HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. FIGURE 20 POSITIONING THE PAPR 6. Position blower assembly on back of one hip on either the right or left side of the body. When properly donned, the ON/OFF switch shall be accessible to the user. See FIGURE 20. FACEPIECE DONNING PROCEDURES Before use of the respirator, the user must read and practice the procedures for donning, use, and termination of use. The user must be familiar with and practice the prescribed donning, leak test, use, and termination of use procedures prior to respirator use. Follow the donning instructions for the model facepiece you have. The DONNING INSTRUCTIONS for FOUR STRAP full facepieces to be used WITH ADAPTER (such as the AV-2000, AV-3000, Scott-O-Vista, and the Weld-O-Vista) and the FIVE STRAP full facepieces to be used WITH ADAPTER (such as the AV-3000 SureSeal) are included in this instruction. The respirator MUST NOT be worn when conditions prevent a good face to facepiece seal. Such conditions include but are not limited to: • long hair at the forehead or the side of the face that interferes with the sealing surface or gets caught in the head harness buckles, • facial hair such as growth of beard or sideburns, or low hairline that crosses or interferes with the sealing surface, • thick or protruding hairstyles such as pony tails or buns that interfere with the smooth and close fit of the head harness to the head, • temple pieces on corrective glasses, • a skull cap that projects under the facepiece, • excessive use of cosmetics including moisturizers, make-up, or after shave, • the absence of one or both dentures, • weight loss or weight gain since last fit testing, • facial scarring, • anything else which interferes with the face to facepiece seal or the fit of the head harness to the head. Periodically repeating the fit testing is required to identify any physical changes of the user (such as those listed above) which could affect the fit of the facepiece. NOTE IF THE STYLE FULL FACEPIECE RESPIRATOR MASK IS BEING DONNED FOR THE FIRST TIME OR IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A PARTICULAR STYLE FACEPIECE IS TO BE USED, REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE STEPS IN THE FACEPIECE FITTING SECTION OF THIS INSTRUCTION. DURING TRAINING, THE USER MUST DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF TIGHTNESS OF THE HEAD HARNESS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THE BEST SEAL AND MOST SECURE FIT. FACEPIECE DONNING INSTRUCTIONS For FOUR STRAP and FIVE STRAP full facepieces to be used WITH ADAPTER INSPECT THE FACEPIECE Refer to the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION section of this instruction on Page 14 for complete details. 1. Examine the facepiece to verify that it is complete and in serviceable condition. 2. Verify that the 40mm adapter or AV-PAPR Hose is properly installed. 3. Verify that the inhalation and exhalation valves in the 40mm adapter or AV-PAPR Hose Assembly are properly installed and operational, and that they are clean and free of any dirt or debris. 4. Verify that the inhalation valves in the nose cup or voicemitter ducts are properly installed. 5. Verify that the nose cup is properly seated between the flanges of the voicemitter ducts. Refer to the images in the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION section of this instruction for proper configuration of nose cup. 6. Hold the facepiece in one hand and hold the head harness by the base of the head net. See FIGURE 22-A. 3. Place the facepiece on the face with chin properly located in the chin pocket while pulling the head harness over the top of the head. Verify that no hair or clothing is interfering with the face to facepiece seal. See FIGURE 22-B. FIGURE 22-A ADJUST HEAD STRAPS OUT NOTE ENSURE THAT THE CHIN IS PROPERLY LOCATED IN THE CHIN POCKET OF THE FACEPIECE THROUGHOUT THE DONNING PROCESS. FIGURE 22-B CHIN FIRST-HARNESS OVER TOP OF HEAD 4. Tighten the neck straps by pulling the two lower strap ends toward the rear of the head. Stroke the head harness net down the back of the head using one or both hands. Verify that the head harness is lying flat against the back of the head. Retighten the neck straps. 6. Tighten the two temple straps. Adjust the temple straps by pulling the two temple strap ends toward the back of the head. Overtightening may cause discomfort. 7. Alternate hands to maintain the facepiece position on the face. FIGURE 23-F HOLD AND TIGHTEN 7. Verify the proper location of the face in the facepiece and the chin in the chin cup. Tighten the forehead strap last by pulling the forehead strap toward the back of the head. Do not overtighten the forehead strap. FIGURE 23-G 8. Verify that the head harness is centered on the crown of the head and lying flat against the back of the head. Verify the proper location of the face in the facepiece and the chin in the chin cup and retighten all straps as needed. 9. Stroke the head harness down the back of the head and make sure the net is centered on your head. If necessary, adjust the head harness net to the center of the crown of the head. Refer to the DONNING PROBLEMS section of this instruction before proceeding to the NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST AND/OR POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 Page 30 of 48 DONNING PROBLEMS 1. Perform a personal check of the Facepiece and Head Harness and address any donning problems. OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.134 requires teams of at least two people for situations where this type of equipment is used. Have your partner help you verify the facepiece is donned properly. Possible problems include: a) Head Harness Strap twisted, b) Head Harness off-center or not flat against the head, c) Head Harness too high on the head, d) Hair or clothing in the face seal, e) Faceseal rolled over inside the facepiece rather than flat against the face, f) Facepiece is sitting too low on the face as evidenced by pressure on the forehead or the facepiece making contact with the throat area permitting a break in the seal. The illustrations below depict the AV-3000 SureSeal, but similar conditions can occur with ALL facepiece styles as well. WARNING IF ANY DONNING PROBLEMS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THE FACEPIECE AND RE-DON IT CORRECTLY. USE OF AN IMPROPERLY DONNED FACEPIECE MAY LEAD TO EXPOSURE TO THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. HARNESS STRAP TWISTED HEAD HARNESS OFF CENTER FACE SEAL ROLLED OVER HEAD HARNESS TOO HIGH FACEPIECE TOO LOW FIGURE 24 - DONNING PROBLEMS If any donning problems are found, remove the facepiece and re-don the facepiece correctly. 2. With the blower assembly turned OFF, close off inlet side of both filtration elements by placing palms of hands or other airtight objects over filter element inlets and press firmly to seal the inlets. See FIGURE 25. 2. Inhale slowly and hold breath momentarily. Leakage shall not be present and the facepiece shall be drawn slightly to the face. NOTE When performing the negative pressure LEAK TEST, temporarily positioning the blower assembly at the front of the waist will assist in sealing filter element inlets. 3. If leakage of air is detected during the above procedure, doff (remove) the facepiece and re-don the facepiece according to the donning procedure above. If leakage persists, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR. FIGURE 25 NEGATIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST NOTE In addition to a poor facepiece fit, leakage may be the result of loose breathing tube connection, improperly tightened filter elements, damaged or missing gaskets at the breathing tube and/or filter element connections, a damaged or missing exhalation valve or other damaged respirator components. DO NOT USE A DAMAGED OR LEAKING RESPIRATOR. Make repairs and recheck respirator or remove respirator from service and tag it for repair by authorized personnel. If the respirator is equipped with the AV-PAPR Hose Assembly P/N 20082930 or -36, also perform a POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST as described on the next page before proceeding. P/N 595130-01 Rev. IF THE BREATHING TUBE IS EXCESSIVE TIGHT, THE FACEPIECE MAY BE DISLODGED WHEN HEAD IS TURNED. FAILURE TO POSITION BLOWER ASSEMBLY AND BREATHING TUBE PROPERLY MAY RESULT IN THE FACEPIECE BEING PULLED FROM THE USER’S FACE EXPOSING THE USER TO THE CONTAMINATED ATMOSPHERE WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST On respirators equipped with the AV-PAPR Hose Assembly P/N 200829-30 or -36, also PERFORM A POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST as follows: 1. With the blower assembly turned OFF, place your hand on the integral facepiece adapter as shown in FIGURE 26. Center the heel of your hand on the circular area with the “SCOTT” logo. PRESS IN THIS AREA WITH HEEL OF HAND WARNING WHERE APPLICABLE, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR IF A SATISFACTORY POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST CANNOT BE PERFORMED. FAILURE TO PERFORM A LEAK TEST EVERY TIME THE RESPIRATOR IS DONNED MAY RESULT IN LITTLE OR NO RESPIRATORY PROTECTION AND MAY EXPOSE THE WEARER TO SUBSTANCES THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. FIGURE 26 POSITIVE PRESSURE LEAK TEST 2. Press firmly in on the rubber adapter boot to affect a seal around the Exhalation Valve. DO NOT DISTORT THE FIT OF THE FACE TO THE FACEPIECE BY PRESSING TOO HARD ON THE ADAPTER DURING THE TEST. 3. Exhale slowly to build pressure inside the facepiece. Leakage from the face seal, around the adapter, or through the Inhalation Valve shall not be present. 4. If leakage of air is detected during the above procedure, doff (remove) the facepiece, inspect, and re-don the facepiece according to the donning procedure above. If leakage persists, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR. NOTE In addition to a poor facepiece fit, leakage may be the result OF damaged respirator components. DO NOT USE A DAMAGED OR LEAKING RESPIRATOR. Make repairs and recheck respirator or remove respirator from service and tag it for repair by authorized personnel. NOTE THE FACEPIECE MUST BE PROPERLY DONNED AND THE BLOWER POWER SWITCH SET TO ON BEFORE ENTRY INTO AN AREA CONTAINING OR SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING CONTAMINATION. COMPLETE PREPARATION FOR USE Additional protective clothing and protective head wear, if used, must be arranged so that it does not interfere with the fit of the facepiece or restrict the air flow to the filter elements. The blower assembly and breathing tube must be arranged so that: a) There is enough slack in the breathing tube so the respirator user can turn his/her head through a full range of motion without the breathing tube pulling on the facepiece, the breathing tube being pinched closed or the breathing tube interfering with other protective clothing or equipment. b) The blower assembly and breathing tube must not be positioned so that excessive slack of the breathing tube is likely to catch on objects. The breathing tube is available in lengths to fit different individuals. The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator is now donned and ready to use. The C420 Plus respirator must be properly prepared for use, properly donned and negative LEAK tested in an area known to be free of contamination before it can be used. 2. The selector switch must be in the ON position for use. 3. Use of the respirator must be in strict accordance with the limitations contained in the LIMITATIONS ON USE section of this instruction and in compliance with the written respiratory protection program and recognized respiratory standards, i.e.: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. 4. Before entry into a contaminated area, the maximum safe duration of use must be estimated. The maximum safe duration of use depends primarily on: a) The amount and type of contamination in the air and the capacity of the filter elements to absorb or neutralize that contaminant. b) The amount of airborne particles (dust) in the atmosphere. c) The charge contained in the battery. d) The physiological limits of the respirator user. The employer shall predetermine the maximum expected filter element life based on a determination of the amount of contaminant in the atmosphere and the capacity of the filter elements together with the expected air flow through the filter elements. An average air flow of approximately two cubic foot per minute (CFM) will flow through each filter element during prolonged use. In determining maximum time of use, consideration must be given to the physiological limitations of the user to remain in a contaminated area with the facepiece continuously sealed to his/her face. 5. After four (4) hours of continuous use, the user must leave the contaminated area, decontaminate if required, and check the airflow with the Airflow Indicator (See IN USE FLOW TEST section of this instruction). Thereafter, the air flow must be checked at least every two (2) hours of use to monitor battery life and filter efficiency. NOTE DO NOT PERMIT THE BATTERY TO COMPLETELY DISCHARGE DURING USE. ALWAYS CHECK THE BATTERY PERFORMANCE WITH THE AIRFLOW INDICATOR AND CHANGE OUT THE BATTERY IMMEDIATELY IF THE AIRFLOW HAS DROPPED BELOW THE MINIMUM LEVEL DUE TO A LOW BATTERY. 6. If, during use, the air flow from the blower assembly should noticeably decrease or stop completely, or if inhalation should become difficult, immediately leave the contaminated area. Decontaminate, if required, and check the respirator. 7. If the airborne contaminant is detected by odor, taste, eye irritation, or if any discomfort is felt during respirator use, immediately leave the contaminated area. Decontaminate, if required, and check the respirator. 8. If the battery compartment should become hot to touch immediately turn the power switch to OFF position. Do not remove the facepiece, but continue to breathe through the respirator and immediately leave the contaminated area. Decontaminate, if required, and check the respirator. P/N 595130-01 Rev. DO NOT HANDLE BATTERY DIRECTLY IF YOU SMELL AN ACRID ODOR. IMPROPER HANDLING OF BATTERIES MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. IN USE AIR FLOW TEST If, at any time, the respirator user leaves the contaminated area because of: – a decrease in air flow from the blower assembly, – a difficulty with inhaling, – the expiration of time the filter element is expected to be useful in removing airborne contaminants, – or, after continued use, has exceeded the recommended time period of continued use, an Air Flow Test must be performed on the respirator before reentry to the contaminated area. Perform the Air Flow Test as follows: 1. The user must leave the area requiring respiratory protection and be in an area free from contaminants. 2. The user must be decontaminated, if required, at least to the extent that the breathing tube can be disconnected from the blower assembly. 3. Airflow Indicator (805374-01) must be installed as shown in FIGURE 7 of this instruction and the blower assembly air flow measured as stated in step 4 of the REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION section of this instruction. 4. With the filter elements installed, turn the power switch ON. – If red ball does not rise completely above line on Airflow Indicator, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR. Proceed as follows: a) Turn the power switch OFF and replace the battery. Turn the power switch ON and recheck performance with Airflow Indicator. – If red ball still does not rise above line on Airflow Indicator, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR and proceed as follows: b) Turn the power switch OFF and replace both filter elements. Turn the power switch ON and recheck performance with Airflow Indicator. – If red ball still does not rise above line, DO NOT USE RESPIRATOR, remove the respirator from service, decontaminate if required, and tag unit for repair. 5. After obtaining an acceptable flow test and before reentering the contaminated area, the user must don the respirator and perform a successful negative pressure seal check as described in the DONNING PROCEDURE section of this instruction. NOTE If the original filter elements are retained for reentry, TAKE care not to exceed the total time of estimated useful life of the filter elements versus the concentration of the particular contaminant it is being used to protect against. FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER PROCEDURES FOR USE OF THE AIRFLOW INDICATOR MAY EXPOSE THE USER TO CONTAMINANTS WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 USE OF THE C420 Plus RESPIRATOR CONTINUED... EMERGENCY USE The SCOTT C420 Plus respirator is a Powered Air Purifying Respirator and must never be used in an atmosphere which is Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH). The C420 Plus respirator may only be used in atmospheres when the user can escape without the use of a respirator. If, for any reason, the blower assembly stops operating, becomes very noisy, or the battery compartment becomes hot to the touch, immediately leave the area requiring respiratory protection, turn the power switch to the OFF position and determine the cause of the problem. If, for any reason, it becomes impossible to inhale through the respirator during use, the user may have to disconnect the facepiece from the breathing tube or remove the facepiece. THIS WILL TERMINATE RESPIRATORY PROTECTION AND THE USER WILL BE BREATHING THE ATMOSPHERE THE RESPIRATOR WAS INTENDED TO PROTECT AGAINST. To remove the breathing tube from the facepiece: • On facepieces which DO NOT require an adapter, unthread the breathing tube from the facepiece. • On facepieces which DO require an adapter, pull the locking mechanism away from the facepiece and rotate the adapter 1/4 turn clockwise (viewed from inside of facepiece) and remove the adapter from the facepiece. After removal of the breathing tube or adapter or removal of the facepiece, the user must leave the contaminated atmosphere immediately. The respirator must be removed from service and tagged for repair. Do not allow the blower assembly to be placed under water during use as water will be drawn into the filter elements. If accidental immersion occurs during use, leave the area requiring respiratory protection, turn power switch to the OFF position, remove the respirator from service and tag for inspection and/or repair. If it becomes impossible to inhale through the filter elements after accidental immersion, proceed as directed above. P/N 595130-01 Rev. TERMINATION OF USE Termination of use of the respirator occurs when the user leaves the contaminated area and does not intend to make reentry. To terminate the use of the C420 Plus respirator proceed as follows: The respirator removal must be done in a fresh air environment after thorough decontamination. To doff the facepiece (i.e.: remove the facepiece and terminate respiratory protection) proceed as follows: 1. Exit the area requiring respiratory protection and, if necessary, proceed to decontamination as directed by your respiratory protection program. 2. When it is safe to remove the respirator and handle it: a) Turn the power switch to the OFF position. b) Remove the facepiece by loosening the head harness straps and extend them to full outward position. Straps are loosened by moving the buckle release assemblies, while lifting the facepiece away from the face to maintain tension on the straps. Remove the facepiece by pulling the head harness up and over the head. Do not remove the facepiece by pulling on the breathing tube assembly. 3. Remove the blower assembly by disengaging the belt buckle by squeezing the top and bottom tabs of the buckle assembly toward the center of the buckle. 4. Unthread and remove filter elements. Replace the cap and plug on each filter element. Do not dispose of filter elements as ordinary waste. See DISPOSAL OF USED FILTER ELEMENTS section of this instruction. 5. Open the battery compartment by unthreading (counterclockwise) battery compartment cover and remove battery. LiSO2 Battery must be disposed of on termination of use. Do not dispose of batteries as ordinary waste. See DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. 6. After termination of use and decontamination of exterior of the respirator, if necessary, the respirator must be cleaned and inspected. See INSPECTION, CLEANING AND STORAGE section of this instruction. THE SCOTT C420 Plus respirator must be cleaned, inspected, and prepared for use before the next use. Page 39 of 48 WARNING DO NOT REMOVE THE FACEPIECE OR THE BREATHING TUBE OR ADAPTER FROM THE FACEPIECE WHILE IN THE HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE EXCEPT IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 CLEANING AND STORAGE After any required decontamination, respirators must be cleaned, disinfected/ sanitized, and inspected after each use. After such cleaning and inspection, the respirator must be stored in a clean dry area and reinspected during preparation for use before it is used again. Refer to the appropriate manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for any cleaning or disinfecting/sanitizing preparations used. The used filter elements must be removed from the respirator and disposed of as directed in the DISPOSAL OF USED FILTER ELEMENTS section of this instruction. Handle the used batteries in accordance with the DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES section of this instruction. NOTE None of the components of this respirator may be disinfected/ sanitized using an autoclave. NOTE PRIOR TO HANDLING OR USE OF ANY OF THE CLEANING AGENTS MENTIONED IN THIS INSTRUCTION, CONSULT THE MANUFACTURER’S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) FOR PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS. NOTE If during use, the respirator is suspected of being contaminated by hazardous substance, the contaminant must be identified and properly removed or the contaminated component(s) must be replaced before next use. Dispose of the contaminate or the contaminated component(s) in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. IF THE RESPIRATOR IS SUSPECTED OF BEING EXPOSED TO CBRN CLASS HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES, HANDLE AND/OR DISPOSE OF IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF YOU CBRN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAM. WARNING THOROUGHLY CLEAN AND DECONTAMINATE THE FACEPIECE, BREATHING TUBE, WAIST BELT AND BLOWER ASSEMBLY AFTER EACH USE. FAILURE TO CLEAN AND DECONTAMINATE THE EQUIPMENT MAY EXPOSE THE USER TO SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Clean the respirator after each use as follows: Supplies needed: – SCOTT recommended sanitizing or disinfecting cleaner such as Wescodyne Plus. This is a dilute iodine solution. – Drinking (potable) water - running or in a spray bottle – Air supply of lubricant free, dry breathing air, maximum 30 psig, for drying NOTE PRIOR TO HANDLING OR USE OF ANY OF THE CLEANING AGENTS MENTIONED IN THIS INSTRUCTION, CONSULT THE MANUFACTURER’S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) FOR PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS. 1. Inspect the equipment for worn or aging rubber parts, worn or frayed harness webbing or damaged components. 2. Disconnect the breathing tube from the facepiece and from the blower assembly. 3. Where applicable, remove the 40mm Adapter or AV-PAPR Hose Assembly from the facepiece. To remove the adapter, pull the locking mechanism away from the facepiece and rotate the adapter 1/4 turn clockwise (viewed from inside of facepiece) and remove adapter from the facepiece. 4. Carefully wash the blower assembly in a warm water solution (110° F / 44° C maximum) containing a mild detergent. DO NOT IMMERSE THE BLOWER ASSEMBLY. A soft cloth may be used for scrubbing extreme dirty areas. Clean breathing tube connection and filter element mounts for dirt that could prevent an air tight seal. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. USE ONLY THE RECOMMENDED CLEANING AND DISINFECTING AGENTS. WARNING INSPECT THE FACEPIECE, BREATHING TUBE, WAIST BELT AND BLOWER ASSEMBLY AFTER EACH USE. FAILURE TO INSPECT THE EQUIPMENT MAY RESULT IN A MALFUNCTION OF THE RESPIRATOR WHICH MAY EXPOSE THE USER TO SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN CAUSE serious INJURY OR DEATH. NOTE If accidental immersion of the blower assembly occurs, blower assembly must be allowed to air dry thoroughly and then MUST BE tested with the Airflow Indicator to verify that the motor was not damaged. 5. Carefully wash the inside and outside of the breathing tube assembly in a warm water solution (110° F / 44° C maximum) containing a mild detergent. Clean breathing tube connections for dirt that could prevent an air tight seal. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. 6. Disinfect or sanitize the facepiece using the SCOTT recommended disinfectant/sanitizing cleaner. Follow the instructions for application and contact time provided with the product. NOTE disinfecting/sanitizing may not be necessary if the respirator is reused by the same worker. NOTE A soft brush may be used to wash the harnesses, breathing tube, and elastomeric portion of the facepiece. DO NOT USE BRUSH ON PLASTIC LENS. 7. Thoroughly Rinse with drinking water using a spray bottle or softly running water. Shake excess water off and then dry with a clean, lint free cloth or gently blow dry with clean, dry breathing air of 30 psig or less pressure. Do not use shop air or any other air containing lubricants or moisture. When drying, care must be taken to not dislodge or unseat the inhalation check valves. NOTE THE FACEPIECE NOSE CUP IS DESIGNED TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE FACEPIECE ASSEMBLY AND DOES NOT NEED TO BE DISASSEMBLED FOR CLEANING AND DISINFECTING/SANITIZING. IN THE EVENT THAT THE NOSE CUP IS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION OR CLEANING, MAKE CERTAIN IT IS REASSEMBLED PROPERLY. 8. Where applicable, carefully clean and disinfect the 40mm adapter assembly using the SCOTT recommended disinfectant/sanitizing cleaner. Follow the instructions for application and contact time provided with the product. DO NOT USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ON ANY PART OF THE 40mm ADAPTER. Shake excess water off and then dry with a clean, lint free cloth or gently blow dry with clean, dry breathing air of 30 psig or less pressure. When drying, care must be taken to not dislodge or unseat the inhalation check valves. 9. Perform a REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION as detailed in this instruction. Page 41 of 48 CAUTION IF the nose cup is removed for inspection, make certain it is reassembled correctly for the model facepiece and style of nose cup. WARNING FOLLOW THE REGULAR OPERATIONAL INSPECTION PROCEDURE EXACTLY. IF ANY DAMAGE OR OPERATIONAL MALFUNCTION IS NOTED, DO NOT USE THE RESPIRATOR. REMOVE THE RESPIRATOR FROM SERVICE AND TAG IT FOR REPAIR BY AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. FAILURE TO PROPERLY IDENTIFY DAMAGE OR MALFUNCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 Store the C420 Plus respirator as follows: After cleaning, the C420 Plus PAPR must be stored in a manner that will: – Protect the components from dirt or debris entering the breathing path – Protect the components from impact damage – Protect the components from distortion NOTE DO NOT STORE THE C420 Plus PAPR WITH NEW OR USED FILTER ELEMENTS INSTALLED OR WITH A BATTERY INSTALLED. 1. After cleaning and drying, store the facepiece in a clean plastic bag or equivalent to protect it from dirt, grease, and oil. Do not store the facepiece in direct sunlight. Store in a manner that will not distort the face seals. 2. On the blower assembly, seal the two canister ports and the air outlet on the top of the unit with the plastic caps or some equivalent method. Additional plastic caps are available from SCOTT Health & Safety. DO NOT STORE THE C420 Plus PAPR WITH NEW OR USED FILTER ELEMENTS INSTALLED. 3. The breathing tube may be sealed for storage by replacing the plastic caps in each end, by threading the female end onto the male end, or by an equivalent method that keeps dirt and debris out of the breathing tube. Additional plastic caps are available from SCOTT Health & Safety. Be sure the breathing tube is not kinked or flattened when placed in storage. 4. Do not store a battery in the blower unit. Store batteries in a cool, well ventilated area, preferably between -4° F and 85° F (-20° C and 30°C), away from moisture, sources of heat, open flames, food and drink. Keep adequate clearance between batteries. Protect the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals from short-circuiting which can cause burn, leakage and rupture hazard. Keep fresh LiSO2 batteries in original packaging until use. Refer to the instructions provided with the battery for details. 5. Store the C420 Plus PAPR blower, belt & airflow indicator with this instruction booklet in a suitable protective container such as the original packaging box, or equivalent, that will protect the components from impact, dirt, and distortion. DISPOSAL OF USED BATTERIES Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide Batteries Handle the Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide (LiSO2) batteries with care. • Do not accidentally short circuit the contacts. • Do not attempt to recharge. This is not a rechargeable battery. • Do not incinerate or expose the battery to temperatures above 158°F/70°C. • Do not puncture or attempt to disassemble the battery. Failure to follow these instructions or any other misuse of this battery may result in overheating of the battery pack which may cause a fire, violent venting of sulfur dioxide (poison) gas, or leakage of corrosive electrolyte from the battery which may cause serious injury or death. Remove the used battery and discharge completely before disposal as follows: 1. In a well ventilated area away from other personnel, remove the “WARNING” label from the side of the battery next to contact end. Attached to this label is a pull tab. Pull tab must be removed with label. 2. Store battery with label removed in a well ventilated area for five (5) days to completely discharge. 3. Dispose of depleted or damaged batteries in accordance with state and local environmental regulations and in accordance with the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for the LiSO2 battery. Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries Dispose of damaged or depleted Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. It is the user’s responsibility to determine if disposal or transportation of NiMH batteries are regulated in their area. Do not throw away depleted or damaged batteries as ordinary waste. Consult and follow the applicable regional transport regulations (for example: Department of Transportation (DOT) in the United States or Transport Dangerous Goods (TDG) in Canada) for both the origin and the destination before shipping or otherwise transporting Lithium-Sulfur Dioxide batteries. Regulations may apply even if the battery is installed in the PAPR. For purposes of identification, the LiSO2 battery used in this equipment is considered a Primary Battery of Medium size. Consult the applicable transportation regulations for both the origin and the destination for details of packaging, marking, and documentation requirements. WARNING TRANSPORTATION OF LITHIUM-SULFUR DIOXIDE BATTERIES IS REGULATED BY THE APPLICABLE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITIES. SERVICE The SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR has no user serviceable parts except as instructed in this manual. Refer to the REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE AV-PAPR HOSE section of this instruction. Any operational problems should be referred to an authorized SCOTT Health and Safety service center for repair. RECERTIFICATION The SCOTT C420 Plus PAPR should be recertified every three years to inspect and test the assembly and to verify that the air flow is correct. Page 43 of 48 P/N 595130-01 Rev. D 9/10 REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE AV-PAPR HOSE The following SCOTT replacement parts are available for the SCOTT AV-PAPR Hose, P/N 200829-30 or -36: Inhalation Valve P/N 013374 Exhalation Valve P/N 013374 Hose Boot P/N 200898-01 All repairs or replacements are to be performed in a clean, well lighted work area. WARNING USE ONLY SCOTT APPROVED PARTS. USE OF UNAPPROVED PARTS MAY RESULT IN POOR PERFORMANCE WHICH COULD EXPOSE THE WEARER TO SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. AV-PAPR HOSE EXHALATION VALVE REPLACEMENT: 1. Carefully lift the top edge of the Hose Boot up and off the adapter body. Bend the Boot forward just enough to access the Exhalation Valve. See FIGURE 28. FIGURE 28 2. Lift an edge of the old Exhalation Valve and carefully pull the center of the Valve off of the valve stud. 3. Clean the valve contact surface according to the CLEANING section of this instruction. 4. Inspect the valve stud for cracks or damage. If any damage is found, remove the AV-PAPR Hose assembly from service and tag for replacement. 5. Inspect the new Valve, P/N 013374, to verify that it is clean and has no rips or other damage. 6. Center the mounting hole in the Valve over the valve stud. Push the Valve on until it snaps onto the valve stud ears and the Valve lays flat on the contact surface. See FIGURE 29. FIGURE 29 7. Return the Hose Boot to its original position with the top edge fitted over the adapter body. The Hose Boot must fit flush with the round adapter seal. See FIGURE 30. WARNING FIGURE 30 8. AV-PAPR HOSE INHALATION VALVE REPLACEMENT: 1. Remove the Inhalation Cover from the back of the AV-PAPR Hose facepiece adapter. Carefully lift the top edge to disengage the notch from the lock tab and slide the Cover down and off the channels on the adapter body. See FIGURE 31. FIGURE 31 2. Reach down inside the inhalation chamber and lift an edge of the old Inhalation Valve. Carefully pull the center of the Valve off of the valve stud. If necessary, use blunt tweezers or needle-nose pliers to remove the old Valve. See FIGURE 32. FIGURE 32 3. Clean the valve contact surface according to the CLEANING section of this instruction. 4. Inspect the valve stud for cracks or damage. If any damage found, remove the AV-PAPR Hose assembly from service and tag for replacement. 5. Inspect the new Valve, P/N 013374, to verify that it is clean and has no rips or other damage. 6. Center the mounting hole in the Valve over the valve stud. Push the Valve on until it snaps onto the valve stud ears and the Valve lays flat on the contact surface. If necessary, use blunt tweezers or needlenose pliers to position the new Valve. Use care to avoid damage to the new Valve. See FIGURE 33. FIGURE 33 7. Replace the Inhalation Cover. Align the sides of the Cover with the channels on the adapter and slide the Cover up until the notch snaps over the lock tab. 8. Clean and disinfect the assembly according to the CLEANING section of this instruction before returning the equipment to service. D 9/10 AV-PAPR HOSE BOOT REPLACEMENT: Replace the AV-PAPR Hose Boot, P/N 200898-01, as follows: 1. Clean the entire AV-PAPR Hose assembly according to the CLEANING section of this instruction before performing this procedure to assure that no dirt or debris will be transferred to the inside of the adapter when the new boot is installed. 2. Orient the hose so that the right angle connector is pointing down from the front of the facepiece adapter. See FIGURE 34. FIGURE 34 3. Lift the top edge of the old Hose Boot up and off the adapter body. See FIGURE 35. FIGURE 35 4. Bend the Hose Boot forward and begin to stretch it over the top of the right angle connector. Pull the Boot down until it has passed over the right angle connector and is around the hose. See FIGURE 36. 5. Hold the right angle connector and pull the Hose Boot down the length of the hose. While the Boot is off, inspect the Exhalation and Inhalation Valves in the integral adapter and replace as needed. 8. Install the new Hose Boot in the reverse order. Orient the new Hose Boot so that the threaded connector is pushing from the inside out and carefully stretch the new Boot over the threaded connector. See FIGURE 38. 9. Hold the threaded connector and pull the Hose Boot up the length of the hose. FIGURE 38 10. Push the Hose Boot up and over the top of the right angle connector. Carefully work the Boot around the right angle connector until it fits evenly around the connector flange and there are no parts of the Boot protruding from the flange area. See FIGURE 39. FIGURE 39 11. Fit the top and bottom edges of the Hose Boot over the adapter body. The top edge of the Hose Boot must fit flush with the round adapter seal. See FIGURE 40. FIGURE 40 12.
