ArtsFest 2013....How did it all begin? One sunny day in May 1996, Athens Area High School art teacher Dave Webster and a few of his pottery students decided to take the pottery wheels outside and began “throwing some pots”--a term used for making a pot on the wheel. Not too many minutes passed before those at work discovered they had an audience. Several neighbors took an interest in what was happening and were fascinated by the hypnotic act of making a pot on the spinning wheel. The following May, Mr. Webster decided to turn it up a notch and host a day-long event of students working on the wheels outdoors. He called it a festival--The First Annual Throw-a-Thon. Mr. Webster invited elementary students, teachers, friends, and family members to “throw” with the pottery students. However, even though this festival was titled “The First Annual”, it was 1999 before another festival was held. A group of students, led by Jeremy Hicks, challenged Mr. Webster to bring back the Festival and expand it to an ArtsFest. The students encouraged fellow art teacher, Louella Gilbert, to join in the effort. With the support of the Athens Area School District and then-superintendent Tom Salpino, the 1999 ArtsFest was off and running. Sixteen artisans participated and hundreds of local residents attended the event. With the help and drive of students and community members, the Fourteenth Annual ArtsFest on May 4th & 5th, 2013, will host nearly 200 juried artisans and will expect to see an attendance of over 40,000 strong from local communities and the surrounding areas of New York and Pennsylvania and beyond. Hearts Bamboo 7 6 ENTERTA INMENT Laura Orshaw and the New Velvet Band The Rockets were originally formed in 1976 by three Towanda natives Kurt Foster, bass and lead vocals, Kevin Murray, keyboards, guitar, lead vocals, and Jim Hoag, guitar and lead vocals. The last edition was drummer Tim Chamberlain from Troy, PA. With their mix of superb vocals and lay in the pocket rock and roll grooves, the Rockets quickly became one of the area's premier Classic Rock Band. Ellis Callahan and Drew Bastian of Crooked Son lost a guitar player to Nebraska. They decided that rockin' only needed the two of them anyway. Their only concern is raw rock 'n roll be it Classic, Southern, Alternative, Blues, or Ironic. Whatever it is, it's raucous. These two have higher aspirations however. Be ye warned... Digger Jones is a power trio with the sound of a much larger band. The group takes a down-home approach to mixing roots music with jam inspired rock. Justin Raynor grew up in the small town of Bentley Creek, Pennsylvania. Justin has displayed a love of music his entire life, yet he did not discover his love for acoustic guitar until his freshman year in college. Justin received his first guitar as a graduation gift from his uncle, Scott Bolster. All members originally hail from the central NY area and are now in the process of writing and recording new material for their debut album release. The trio can be found performing their blend of blues, funk and rock around New York with plans for more extensive touring in 2011. www.oldboyrecords.com Justin began teaching himself how to play guitar, not with sheet music, but by listening, and using memorization. He then began to incorporate singing into his practice and, after much positive feedback, he ventured into the entertainment industry. Justin now entertains hundreds of people at numerous events throughout the area. He currently resides in Bentley Creek with his wife, Ashley, and two children, Ella and Easton. Other ArtsFest performers include: For more information pertaining to Justin’s upcoming events, visit his Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/justinraynor13?fref=ts 5 Man Trio Classic Rock www.elliscallahan.com The Red Eyes Formed in the winter of '07, the band started playing shows locally. With venues such as Athens Artsfest and the summer sound stage at the Root's, we were definitely a small town band with big time dreams. The band has evolved much since then playing many private parties, bars, fundraisers, and more stuff that we really can't remember. Our similar yet very different understandings and preferences of music have kept us together. All graduating from the class of '08 from Athens, we have been best friends for a very long time. However, until recently did we decide to form a band. It's unusual to have such a connection with the people that are in the band but we really are a tight group that has stuck together through thick and thin. We lost a member in December of 2010, Ian Wiles, to Thalassemia. It tore us down, but at the same time brought us closer than ever. His life was an inspiration to all of us and today, we still play for him.
