Where To Go What To Do A Guide for Chol Hamoed and the Fall 1. A Publication of 2. A Publication of Page S2 THE JEWISH PRESS Friday, September 25, 2015 Friday, September 25, 2015 Is That A Gazelle In The Middle Of Jerusalem? By Abigail Klein Leichman Braving a biting late spring wind, hundreds of people turned out for the spring grand opening of the city’s new urban nature park at Gazelle Valley – the only one of its kind in Israel. Bordered on all sides by major traffic thoroughfares and dense residential housing, Gazelle Valley (“Emek HaTzvaim” in Hebrew) stretches over 62 acres. A herd of wild gazelles has long made its home in this unlikely refuge in southwest Jerusalem as the surrounding development effectively penned in the gentle beasts. The newly opened nature reserve – with certain off-limits areas devoted to the revitalized herd – has five natural and manmade ponds, walking trails and bicycle paths, two flowing streams, bird and rodent watching stations, an arbor, a manmade island accessed via wooden bridges, and signposts describing its many plant and animal inhabitants. A visitor center with a “green roof” offers binoculars, mats and deck chairs on loan, and visitors can sign up for guided group nature tours. In the future, the center will sell ready-to-eat picnic baskets as well. All this is the result of a 20-year battle by local residents, with the help of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and other environmentalists, to keep the green valley out of the hands of high-rise developers. Six years ago, the city pledged to infuse NIS 22 million to ready the park for the public without endangering the gazelles for which it is famed and named. Another NIS 70 million will be invested over the next few years to revitalize an old fruit orchard and build a farm pond and an educational center devoted to the mountain gazelle native to this part of the Middle East. The valley’s bicycle paths will be linked to existing bike paths running along Sacher Park and Mesila Park; and a wooden promenade will be built above the valley, giving access to the park from the surrounding neighborhoods. Gazelle Valley also will be home to the Jerusalem Center for Urban Nature. It’s safe to assume that the many children frolicking around the natural expanse on opening day were oblivious to the history of Gazelle Valley, also known as Deer Valley. Clad in freebie logo t-shirts and caps given to the first few hundred entrants, kids enjoyed hands-on guided activities such as planting in beverage bottles, building birdhouses, upcycling egg cartons into creepy-crawlies and exploring a beehive (without the bees). Adults browsed informational booths on ecological topics such as composting, while a dance troupe, a musical ensemble, and entertainers dressed Continued on p.S6 “Seal-a-brate” Sukkot with Us! Thankfully, this season is also an opportunity for family bonding and travel, particularly during Chol Hamoed, when many of the stringencies of Yom Tov are temporarily suspended. In this article, we will examine some of the best family-oriented travel destinations and activities to enliven your Chol Hamoed and fall season. Six Flags Great Adventure 1 Six Flags Boulevard, Jackson, New Jersey 08527 General Admission: $69.99 Amusement parks are an ideal and obvious Chol Hamoed destination. Thankfully, the New Jersey area has a wide variety to choose from. One of the most popular amusement parks is Six Flags Great Adventure. First opened in 1974, the park has become a major attraction for families all across the state, boasting an almost inexhaustible selection of year-round rides and events. Though the park is perhaps best known for its intense roller-coasters (such as the “hypercoaster” Nitro, and Kingda Ka, billed as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in America), it also features lighter attractions if you (or your ADVENTURER’S FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CENTER Six Flags Great Advernture children) are not necessarily the thrill-seeking type. Some of the latter include “Big Wheel,” a 150-foot Ferris Wheel “as big as the sky” (according to the official description), a rock-climbing wall, a log flume, bumper cars, a carousel, a Safari off-road adventure with 1,200 animals, and Congo rapids, a white water rafting adventure. For the more courageous, Six Flags has a huge assortment of death-defying rollercoasters, including Come Celebrate with us this year’s SUKKOT EVENT September 30 – October 4 2015 DOORS OPEN AT 11 A.M. El Diablo, promoted as a seven-story “looping steel roller coaster…with a full 360 degree loop,” and El Toro (“The Bull”), which the official park website proudly describes as having a top speed of 70 miles per hours, along with the “steepest drop of any wooden rollercoaster in the country.” For those curious, that drop is approximately 176 feet. If that description puts knots in your stomach (or makes you worry that you won’t live to experience another Chol Hamoed), you can always check out the numerous events and shows hosted by the park, including Safari Discoveries Trainer Talks, a chance to “learn fun facts and get an up-close and personal look at [the park’s] Asian small-clawed otters and California sea lions.” According to the park website’s description, Safari Discoveries Trainer Talks is an interactive presentation that will resonate with animal-lovers of all ages, offering the chance for visitors to learn about unique animals like small-clawed otters, tortoises, hares, scimitar-horned Oryxes, and baby blackbucks. The presentation also focuses on the relationship between the animals and their trainers in the park. The park also hosts “Six Flags Dance Party,” an ongoing event featuring music and song. All things told, Six Flags Great Adventure is an unbeatable Autumn/Chol Hamoed destination that the whole family can enjoy. Visiting the park is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. 718-975-2748 1 Riverside Dr, Camden, NJ 08103 Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. every day General Admission Adult (Ages 13+): $25.95 General Admission Child (Ages 2-12): $18.95 Children Under 2: Free 4D Adventure Combo Adult (Ages 13+): $28.95 Continued on p.S5 Friday, September 25, 2015 Rephun Continued from p.S4 4D Adventure Combo Child (Ages 2-12): $21.95 Philadelphia CityPASS Adult Ticket: $62.00 Philadelphia CityPASS Child Ticket: $39.00 Phone: 856-365-3300 THE JEWISH PRESS Page S5 Phone: 716-278-1796 While aquariums and amusement parks might provide a worthwhile family excursion, perhaps you’re pining for something more meaningful this season. If that’s the case, then look no further than Niagara Falls. Straddling the border between Canada and the United States, these three magnificent waterfalls (the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls) offer an unforgettable chance to marvel at the wonders of creation. In the words of the official Niagara Falls State Park website, the falls are “a North American natural wonder…beyond its waterfall vistas, Niagara is filled with splendid discoveries and fantastic attractions. Getting close enough to touch Niagara Falls inspires genuine awe.” Established in 1885, and designed by famed architect Frederick Law Olmstead, Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the country. Don’t Schlep Food on Your Vacation Between Montreal and New York City This Chol Hamoed… Stop at our Sukkah and eat like a Mensch! A stingray at the Adventure Aquarium. There has always been something mysterious and magical about exploring the depths of the ocean, and short of a deep-sea diving suit, New Jersey’s Adventure Aquarium brings you as close as possible to the experience. At the aquarium, visitors will find everything from African black-footed penguins and jellyfish, to Orinoco crocodiles, clownfish, South American mata mata turtles, eels, octopi, hammerhead sharks, and much, much more. The aquarium hosts numerous daily events, like the Hippo Feed and Talk, where visitors get the chance to watch the aquarium’s biologists train and feed Nile hippos, and Touch a Shark (not quite as terrifying as it sounds, given that these are miniature bamboo sharks). Other attractions include Stingray Beach Club, which offers a stingray touch pool, and Positively Penguins, where aquarium-goers can interact with some of the aquarium’s most lovable residents. For youngsters, the aquarium’s KidZone offers “a dedicated space that encourages kids 6 and under to connect with nature by getting hand’s on” (according to the official website description). Along with exhibits of fascinating and exotic animal species, including clownfish, eels, sea horses, and the mysterious bioluminescent creatures that inhabit the ocean’s deeps, KidZone features “interactive games, activities and touch experiences that promote learning through play.” Like Adventure Aquarium as a whole, KidZone is sure to delight visitors young and old. The city already has an urban birding station, the Jerusalem Bird Observatory, near the Knesset and Supreme Court government complex. “For us, the Gazelle Valley project represents the direction in which we want to take the city: Developing Jerusalem’s green spaces together and in partnership with the community and with the backing of Continued from p.S3 as trees and gazelles completed the picture. However, even if you missed opening day there are plenty of good reasons to head to Gazelle Valley, open free of charge seven days a week and accessible to people with mobility challenges. Despite some rocky terrain, Israel21c saw plenty of visitors navigating the park in wheelchairs and strollers. One advantage of being located in a busy part of town is that several bus lines pass near Gazelle Valley. There is also a parking lot next to a children’s play area leading to the park. Strategically placed stone water fountains throughout the park assure that nobody will go thirsty. On weekdays, Gazelle Valley will be filled with schoolchildren learning about environmentalism and sustainability. Chamber music concerts are planned as a regular offering, while communal Friday evening Sabbath services will be held here as well. The site is an example of an innovative urban approach to open spaces such as Central Park in New York, Hampstead Heath in London and Parc St. Jacques in France. This approach stresses the importance of creating a space for greenery, wild animals and birds capable of coexisting in an urban environment, to be enjoyed by city residents and visitors. “The park’s guiding principle is revolutionary in many municipal entities working to enhance the environment and protect Jerusalem’s natural assets,” concluded Barkat. The park is being built by the Jerusalem municipality with help from the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, the Jerusalem Development Authority and the Jerusalem Foundation. Although there are approximately 150 apple and fruit orchards within 90 minutes-drive from most of our Jewish communities in the New York metropolitan vicinity, many may either be closed to the public or have very slim pickings. The orchards listed below have confirmed to us that they will be open during Chol Hamoed Sukkos this year, but, again, call to be certain. Not every orchard is open all of the days of Chol Hamoed – some may only be open for pick-it- yourself on Sunday, Oct. 4. Most orchards will supply bags and baskets for your fruit, or you can bring your own containers, and most have picnic tables and seating for your family’s al-fresco lunch. Some may have packaged snacks and drinks that are kosher, but of course it’s best to bring along your own. Don’t forget to bring some disposable plastic tablecloths, although we have provided them with advice to supply it for you. Once you’re there, the farmer’s staff will weigh your bags after picking, tell you which varieties of apples, pears or other produce you’ve actually selected, and often supply cooking and baking recipes. I recommend that you buy a copy, I believe for only $15, of the Apple Cookbook, which you might find at many of the orchards you might be visiting. The cost per pound for the fruit will always be substantially less than supermarkets – and much fresher than you can find in the city because you just picked it yourself right off the tree branches. Many of the orchards are organically certified. Some orchards are open only on Sundays and some all of Chol Hamoed – please call ahead and ask. Howe Caverns can satisfy your curiosity, with guided tours through this geological wonder six million years in the making. According to Howe Caverns’s official website, these remarkable caverns are the product of millions of years of erosion, predating the emergence of prehistoric creatures like the wooly mammoth. They are also “one of a very small number of mineral caves (living limestone cave) in the world.” Accidently discovered in 1842 by farmer Lester Howe, the caverns have been a popular New York attraction since Howe opened them to the public in 1843. Visitors to Howe Caverns will discover a wide range of fascinating guided tours, including the traditional tour, the lantern tour, the adventure tour, and the Sunday family flashlight tour. On the traditional tour (which, according to Howe Caverns website, is traditional in name only), visitors embark on a 90-minute journey 156 feet below the earth. A veteran tour guide will “lead you down in an elevator to The Vestibule, where your journey through the enormous main cavern, immense galleries, and under huge boulders which hang precariously overhead, will begin.” For the more adventurous, the Lantern Tour allows one to “navigate the caverns as Lester Howe did…in the dark. As you meander through the caves, and even as you board a boat and explore The Lake of Venus, you’ll only have the candlelight of your lantern to guide you.” Capturing the full natural beauty of the caverns, “the Lantern Tour is an exceptional underground experience you won’t want to miss.” On the Adventure Tour, visitors can enjoy an authentic spelunking experience, a “one of a kind, spelunking adventure with our experienced guides. They’ll take you through the Mystery Passage, across the dry underground stream bed and up to the Great Rotunda. This 107foot high, silo-shaped natural dome is now reachable for the first time in more than 125 years.” Howe Caverns also features more family-friendly activities, like the Flashlight Tour, where kids and parents can explore the caverns with flashlights and lighted headlamps (headlamps for kids only). Howe Caverns also features the Sky Trail ropes course, a 26-foot rock climbing wall, the four tower zip line, the Air Jumper trampoline, and the H20Go Ball water ride. If you’re looking for an unconventional family adventure, Howe Caverns is a Chol Hamoed outing sure to satisfy. Take your kids, and satisfy your own childlike amazement at this magnificent natural wonder. More than 1,000 acres of Orange County, N.Y. orchards produce more than 25 varieties of apples. Located just 50 miles from Manhattan, a day of apple picking offers the perfect fall trip. The activities at these orchards are as vast as the apple varieties so everyone is sure to find something to fit their tastes. “The time is ripe to visit an Orange County orchard. It’s a fun, affordable way to gather your friends and family together in the great outdoors,” said Orange County Tourism Director Susan Hawvermale. “Bring the whole family for spectacular weekend events during the harvest season. Most of the orchards feature delicious, luscious apples from September through early October,” One of the largest festivals in Orange County, Warwick Applefest draws tens of thousands of visitors to the heart of Orange County’s apple country each year. Warwick Applefest will be held on Sunday, October 4 this year. The festival features craft vendors, children’s rides, live entertainment, and fittingly, an apple pie contest. Delhi. Brisbane. Moscow. Japan. Greece. Philippines. Madrid. Ethiopia. Lantau. Italy. Singapore. The world is experiencing an intense travel boom, with a report by the WYSE Travel Confederation estimating that in 2012 alone tourists spent over $217 billion on travelling expenses. This trend has extended to kosher travelers as well, with the number almost doubling over the past five years. Until now travelers who keep a strict kosher diet, have had one additional item on their traveling ‘to do’ list – finding kosher food. Meet 32-year-old David Avital, Israeli businessman and entrepreneur, who has literally travelled to all four corners of the globe for both pleasure and business. A few years ago Avital started keeping kosher but found that it was extremely difficult to organize kosher food when travelling to many cities around the world. Although some places did boast a kosher food service, trying to arrange meals from out of the country proved a huge headache. After some investigation Avital decided to open Koshwhere, a kosher gateway to connect kosher travelers with caterers and kosher food service suppliers. “I like to think of it as the Airbnb of kosher food. A one-stop-shop where one can easily log onto the Koshwhere David Avital, website, look up a kosher food suppli- Koshwhere. er in their desired destination, browse their menu, order meals, and pay in a few short minutes,” says Avital. “It’s great because we’re saving travelers time and the stress of arranging meals. Travel agents can also now offer a full kosher packaged vacation to their clients, complete with flights, accommodation, tours, and kosher meals.” All meals supplied use the freshest ingredients, are strictly kosher certified, and delivered straight to a desired destination. Koshwhere first launched in March and already has 100 suppliers around the world, from Africa to Asia and Australia. “We have grown immensely in the founder of past few months, with new features introduced every week,” Avital says. “We recently introduced group ordering, and are looking to create a smartphone app that is sure to make the ordering experience even easier.” (KosherToday) 125 Freshly Picked Recipes for Making the Most of Apple Season! While most stand alongside a body of water to perform this High Holiday tradition, members of the Enfield & Winchmore Hill Synagogue in North London will plunge even deeper into the practice. Under the direction of Rabbi Yitzchok Tzvi and Tzipporah Sufrin – Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries at UK Headquarters in London who also lead the synagogue – more than 70 people were welcomed aboard a “Tashlich Cruise” along the Grand Union Canal in London on Sunday. “We have captured the imagination and the excitement of our members by planning a nearly twohour ride along one of London’s most beautiful inner canals, with scenery and places of interest along the way,” said Rabbi Sufrin, before the cruise. “Everyone will have a guided summary on the outward journey, and on the way back, a speaker will talk about and explain Tashlich.” Traditionally, Jews observe Tashlich on the first day of Rabbi Yitzchok Tzvi and TzippoRosh Hashanah, rah Sufrin. though the prayer can be said until the last day of Sukkot, which this year falls on Sunday, Oct. 4. The group recited the appropriate prayers, cast away their sins and give tzedakah – putting into practice the words of the Rosh Hashanah prayer Unetaneh Tokef, which says that “repentance, prayer and charity avert the severity of the decree.” The idea for the cruise came from Tzipporah Sufrin, who was looking for an activity that would engage members of their shul and educate them about the practice of Tashlich. “She’s very creative, imaginative, brainy, enthusiastic,” gushes her husband. Clearly his wife was onto something, as the cruise is sold out, with a waiting list of those who would like to step on board. And that’s good news, given that the second goal of the Tashlich cruise is to launch the Hak’hel year with a community event. The Hak’hel year refers to a biblical mitzvah (commandment) of assembling Jewish men, women and children to hear the read- ing of the Torah by the king of Israel once every seven years, following the sabbatical year known as Shemittah. Rosh Hashanah began this year’s Hak’hel cycle. And while there is no longer a Temple, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, encouraged all Jews to join together to increase their Torah observance and study, and to follow G-d’s commandments. How apt, notes Rabbi Sufrin, that a grand union of Jews take place on the Grand Union Canal. The canal near Bugbrooke.
