THE LAKES REGION WINGS
August 2014
Our 26th Year
Chapter Director News
Boy, where is the summer going? July was over just
like that! We had a terrific turn-out last month with new
members and surprise guests. We had a great ride down to
the Yankee Candle Factory Store and the weather held off
so we didn’t get wet.
themselves. There were the usual awards given out and an
announcement was made by our own District Director Ed
Heath that Dave and Bonnie Bolster, NH-A Directors were
officially the Asst. District Directors for New Hampshire
effective July 1, 2014. Congratulations Dave & Bonnie!
As busy as I have been, I neglected to put the New England
Ride for Kids ride on the ride schedule. This has been
corrected and I will be leading a group ride down to the
Ride for Kids on Sunday August 17th. Those that are going
are meeting at the Tilton Dunkin Donuts at 6:45 AM and
the group pulls out at 7AM sharp! We will be taking the
highway down to the ride to make time. We are leaving so
early because the registration at the event closes at 9:30.
The event is being held at the Bose Corporation, 100 The
Mountain Road, Framingham, MA 01701. Dawn and I
were two of the co-founders of this event back in 1998.
Our small Chapter was very well represented at the rally
with myself, the Reid’s, the Kindred’s, Charlie Collins,
the Allard’s, the Hamel’s, the Brown’s, the Cloutier’s, the
Goldsmith’s, Ed Heath, the Hirtle’s, and the Sprague’s. That
was 21 in all. I’ll bet that if you checked out percentage of
total members there, we were probably near the top. Great
job everyone.
The Manchester Center Overnight Ride is on August 23rd
and 24th. Group meets at the Tilton Dunkin Donuts on
Saturday August 23rd at 9 AM and pulls out at 9:30.
The New England Districts Rally has come and gone and
it sure was fun. I personally took the back roads down
with John and Carol Sheehan accompanying me. They had
terrific guided tours and myself along with the Sheehan’s
and the Kindred’s did the “Three State Tour” on Thursday
which took us through MA, up to NH, over to Brattleboro,
Vermont for lunch, and then south from Vermont into MA
and back to Sturbridge.
The Friday ride was just as scenic. Again, myself, the
Sheehan’s, and the Kindred’s took the ride through the
Berkshires over the Mohawk Trail to North Adams, MA.
Great twisty-turnies, and even a hair-pin turn coming out of
the mountains. Friday night has us lakeside at an honest to
goodness Hawaiian Luau.
Saturday, the local Honda dealer in Auburn, MA held a BarB-Q for rally attendees. There was great food and drink,
special prices on service and tires, and even a demonstration
on how to pick up a Gold Wing that has tipped over. Saturday
evening had us at the banquet. Usually I’m not to excited
about banquet food, but the Sturbridge Host hotel out did
Finally, the announcement was made that the 2015 New
England Districts rally was going to be held in Lewiston,
Maine. I will get you a flyer for the newsletter and the
website as soon as I get one.
The ride home had the Sheehan’s and the Kindred’s following
me home on all the back roads
and through rain about 2/3 of the
way home. What a weekend!!!
The ride after the Chapter G
Gathering this month is to
the Vermont Country Store in
Weston, Vermont. Great place
to visit.
See you on the 10th at the
Greenside!

Rewind
The July gathering started earlier than
usual due to the scheduled ride down to The
Yankee Candle Factory in South Deerfield,
MA.
There were 27 in attendance. We welcomed
new GWRRA Members John & Carol
Sheehan from Farmington, NH, Brian
& Dee Thomas, Chapter Directors from
Chapter VT-A, and Mark Brady, a nonmember who came over from Canaan, NH
to check us out. We also had surprise guests
Rich & Linda Fuller, the Chapter Directors
from Chapter CO-Q in Montrose, Colorado
which happens to be my old chapter. When
CO-Q Directors Rich & Linda Fuller
they walked in, you could have blown me
over with a feather. I was so surprised to
see them. They decided to make a stop at our Chapter The Jim Venne Memorial Poker Run was also discussed

don’t have a ride coordinator in place.
I spoke briefly about the successful tire raffle that
was just held. All the tickets were sold with Bob Reid
selling over 110 of them. Needless to say, Bob & Beryl
have won the dinner for two for their grand efforts.
The drawing was then done with Mary Buswell’s name
being pulled from the can. Mary lives in Haverhill, MA
and is a Retread member. She bought the ticket from
Bruce Hartley.
Thanks to everyone in Chapter G for their efforts, and
special mention to Dave & Bonnie Bolster, the Chapter
Directors from NH-A for helping us out and selling
almost 50 tickets down at the Rhode Island Kickoff Breakfast in April. If you remember, we were all
participating in the NH-G Mall Show that day.
NH District Director Ed Heath spoke about the
upcoming New England Districts Rally and guaranteed
us a good time and great weather.
Finally, the NH/VT flag was captured by Chapter VT-A
Directors Brian & Dee Thomas. While they were at
the gathering, Brian & Dee were selling tickets to their
Chapter Fund Raiser, a special hand-made quilt in a
Maine seashore motif.

Welcome to GWRRA

No Pressure!
Check Your Tire
Pressure Often
Checking tire pressure
on your Wing is the
most important tire
maintenance function
you can perform.
I can’t stress this
enough. Check you
tires’ air pressure at
least once a week
and before long trips.
Check the tire pressure when the tires are cold.
This means when the bike has not been ridden
over a mile at moderate speed or has been sitting
for three or more hours.
Never release air from
a hot tire to reach the
recommended
tire
pressure. Normal riding
causes tires to run hotter
and inflation pressure to
increase. Releasing air in
a hot tire may cause under
inflated tire pressure to a
dangerous level. Riding
on under inflated tires will build excess heat and
may cause sudden tire failure. Under inflation
causes irregular tire wear. This could affect
cornering, cause you to lose gas mileage, and
can cause fatigue cracking.
Riding on tires that have too much pressure is
dangerous also. Tires are more likely to be cut,
punctured or broken by sudden impact. Over
inflation will affect the ride of the bike and cause
the tires to wear quicker.
