DEEPDENE BEARS CRICKET CLUB
The Deepdene Bears Cricket Club is proud to be affiliated with the Eastern Cricket Association. We
fielded four teams in the turf competition, one in the synthetic grade and 5 junior teams in the ECA this
season. We extend our thanks and congratulations to the umpires and the tireless volunteers of the
ECA who ensure that we all get on the park. At the other end of the scale we have 2 teams in the
Veterans Division of the ECA competition that started this season. You will note that this is the 96th
annual report.
Our playing facilities are provided by the City of Boroondara and we thank the staff for their
professionalism and assistance. We are a community club and we provide a resource that enables
both the wider community and the citizens of Boroondara to participate in the great game of cricket.
Our sponsors are:
Deepdene Bears Cricket Club is a Level 3 accredited Good Sports club. The
Good Sports program is an initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) to
develop safer and healthier communities. The program helps sporting clubs
manage alcohol responsibly and reduce alcohol related problems such as binge

HISTORY
Deepdene is the oldest continuously playing Club in the Eastern Cricket Association. Each year we
play Canterbury (when they are in Dunstan) for the Boroondara Cup. This award was instituted during
the centenary year of the ECA when we played for the honour on the Camberwell Sports Ground.
The Deepdene Bears Cricket Club is fast approaching its "Century Season". Fortunately a
considerable effort over many seasons has seen the documentation of many individual, grade, team &
club records. In addition, the club’s foundation in 1920 has been pieced together using local papers of
the time (Hawthorn & Camberwell Citizen) and where possible pictures and memorabilia from the
descendants of past players.
We have been very fortunate to have a copy of the 1924/25 premiership photo donated to the Club
which now forms part of our historical collection in the Sturgess Pavilion at Deepdene Park.
By way of background, the Deepdene Cricket Club was very strongly linked to the Deepdene
Congregational Church, which was once located on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Leonard
Street where the Winning Edge now stands. The club began as a social team before forming in August
1921 and played in a paddock in Norbett Street, Balwyn in 1921 and then at Deepdene Park from
1923 on land donated by Mr Alexander MacNeil. Deepdene Park officially opened in August 1924. The
area was still developing in the 1920s with many new estates being built in Deepdene/Balwyn yet
much of the area north of Gordon Street still existed as open spaces, paddocks, chicken runs and
dairies. Today the suburb and surrounding areas are well established, as is the cricket club.
One of the great milestones occurred in 1996 when North Kew Cricket Club, who had the Bears as
their emblem, merged with the Deepdene Cricket Club bringing with them their own rich oral history.
As exemplified by the statistical chronicle Wisdene, Deepdene maintains a strong written history. Many
of the North Kew scorebooks were lost in a disaster (fire, flood or divorce depending on who you
speak to) so we have to rely on history being passed on from generation to generation. In the same
way that this is a valid tradition in indigenous society, it is fun to corner a North Kew elder so that he
can evoke stories of the dream time when as Box Hill Districts they played in the Eastern Suburbs
Cricket Association as the top team in A Matting. In the ESCA, North Kew first XI hovered around the
B/C Turf grades and at one stage had the most feared attack in C Turf. The strong junior program from
North Kew is the basis for today’s junior Bears activities.

SECRETARY’S REPORT – JAMES PATERSON
(The Hangover Part 2)
After the success of the previous season the committee worked hard planning the new season to
ensure that the Club would have continued success with some coaching and leadership changes in
the lower grades to overcome some issues that had occurred in the past. Unfortunately there were a
number of distractions however we decided to enter a 5XI at the last minute and I’m glad we did.
The season started well with 4 of the teams well placed to make the finals at Christmas however loss
of form, dodgy hammy’s and a series of close losses in the 1s and 3s conspired to mean that only the
2s and 4s made the finals where they were both unlucky. The 1XI have been well led by Leigh
Parsons for 5 seasons and I have had the pleasure of working closely with Parso over this time. The
professional approach he has brought to all things cricket from planning, training, match days etc has
lifted the standard across the club and I thank him for his leadership during his time as skipper.
The 2XI led this season by Dan had a side that were expected to struggle in the higher grade but
ultimately should have made the GF despite having to assist the 1XI in their battle to not finish in the
bottom 4. It was great to have Dan’s enthusiasm and voice back around the Club in a leadership role
with Liam coming along as well as some light entertainment and the sight of him running out to talk to
Dad about how he went just after he had holed out brought a few laughs in a normally testy time.
The 3XI led by JD, who dropped down to resolve a leadership void in this team, played a lot of
younger players and were very competitive with George in particular making a lot of runs but they just
couldn’t win enough of the close games.
The 4XI and 5XI led by the Warner Brothers (Charlie and Mark) established a strong culture in their
teams, mixing youth with experience and I hope they want to continue in the future as the first season
as Captain is such a steep learning curve and it becomes easier after that. It is very easy to support
Captain’s that lead with a strong work ethic although Charlie you can bowl downhill at Deepy rather
than up. Phil Dunmill co-ordinated the juniors very well as per usual with others assisting and his
award was most deserving.
The Committee also worked hard to arrange great dinners, social events Comedy night was one of the
best ever) and bar service at both venues and a big thank you to all involved particularly Wolfie and
Luke. Phil and Jason are stepping down from Committee and I thank them for their friendship and
efforts on behalf of the Bears over a number of seasons.
As usual more challenges will emerge for next season like the nets and turf issues at Straddy, larger
covers, turf review etc and more help can always be used. I took a month off in November to visit the
USA and it was good to see that things ran smoothly except for the loss of the swipe to Straddy. Thank
you to Heather and to Matt for all the unofficial support.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - PHIL WARNER
Dear Players, Members, Supporters and Sponsors
The season started with everyone looking forward to building on the successes of the 2014/15
season. We welcomed new members to the Committee with Andrew Watt as Treasurer and Charlie
Warner bringing their own ideas and enthusiasm to the Committee, the appointments of Shaun
Beattie as Coach and Daniel Sturgess as Assistant Coach to revitalise training and support for players
to improve team and individual performances. In addition, many new players joined the Club and this
enabled us to maintain a Fifth Eleven despite the loss of a number of players.
There was continued on field success with Premierships for the Under 16B and Under12Cs and finals
appearances for the Seconds, Fourths, Under 14A and Vets teams. The relegation of the Firsts from
Dunstan Shield is a major disappointment but now provides the opportunity for everyone to work
towards a prompt return to that level. Congratulations to the Coaches, Captains, CoS Mike Hudson
and Junior Coordinator Phil Dunmill, on their leadership of the cricket activities, the teams on match
day and the results. It is exciting to see many juniors playing in the senior teams, enjoying individual
success and developing into quality young men. Cricket is a team game and every player has had a
role in the Club successes during the season. Success comes from a united effort and commitment to
improving all aspects of the Club operations.
Our ongoing negotiations with the City of Boroondara on the proposed relocation of the Club’s senior
matches and training from Deepdene Park to Stradbroke Park have not resulted in any action by the
Council as was hoped at the start of the season. Nevertheless we expect the Council to announce the
design and site of the new cricket nets and a timetable for the construction of the turf wicket table on
the northern ground at Stradbroke Park in the coming weeks.
Jay Knee and I are standing down from the Committee. Jay has been a quiet achiever on the
Committee, providing a supporter perspective, fitness programs to the players, including preseason
activities and in recent times been a key person in managing the clothing. We thank Jay for his efforts
and look forward to his continued support for the Club. The time has come for me to stand down from
being President. I have enjoyed the company of everyone involved with the Club, many of the
opposition teams and the ECA. There have been some challenges; however, the past three years are
dominated by many positive events and experiences on and off the cricket field. It has been a great
honour and privilege to be the President. Thanks to Maxine for her support, including attending many
Club events.
Our Club is extremely fortunate to have fantastic major sponsors, Winenergy, Paint Spot, Bendigo
Bank, Winequip and Harp of Erin Hotel. This sponsorship, along with the encouragement of our
supporters on match days and contributions to social events and the major fund raising activities, is
vital to the success of the Club. Thank you everyone for your past and future support.
The season ahead is an opportunity to learn from the disappointments of last season, build on the
many on field and off field successes and for every player, sponsor and supporter to commit to
improving the performance of the Club on and off the field.

FIRST XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT - LEIGH PARSONS
No one does a premiership hangover quite like the 1st team. Unfortunately, history repeated itself and
we put in a shocker following our flag just as we had done four years earlier. This time, however, there
were less excuses as we hadn't had a lot of retirements; everything appeared as though we were
primed for another tilt at finals. We managed to recruit Sam Grose to replace Nick Dinnison who
wanted to have a crack at Premier Cricket and there were plenty of younger players fighting for the
batting spot opened up by Justin Strempel’s retirement.
The Christmas break came at an interesting time with the 1sts sitting in 5th position; however, we had
not fired a shot and were playing well below the standard that we have come to expect. There was a
lot of talk that things would click after the break and we were in a great position to launch from; how
wrong we were! We returned from the break seemingly having lost the ability to hold the bat and we
witnessed one batting collapse after another. The fact that we did not pass 150 after Christmas
highlights the scale of the run drought. Throughout all our batting woes we managed to continue
setting an extremely high standard with the ball. Danny O'Shea led the way in this department and
ensured that no matter how small the target we were in the game at all times. The development of
Patrick Slingo was also most pleasing. In his 4th season of Dunstan Cricket he elevated his game and
become a consistent wicket taker throughout the year. Sam Grose also came into the fold and bowled
some damaging spells and he will play a key role in getting us back into the Dunstan Shield.
Despite getting relegated there are still a lot of positives when we look to the future. Andrew Zaicos
performance this year was outstanding. He set the standard at training and deserved his results onfield. His 126 against Bulleen was without doubt the individual highlight for the year. Jacob Bevacqua
and Shannon Grass also played significant roles in the top order this year and will be key batters for
us moving forward.
It will be a changing of the guard next year and an exciting time of new opportunities for the club. Twotime premiership player Tim Hoare is still deciding whether his body has another year of toil in it or not.
He helped take us from a consistently good club who could never take the last step to a club that
made 3 Grand Finals and won 2 Flags in a 4-year period. He will be forever remembered for reducing
North Balwyn to 3 for 8 in last season’s Grand Final and giving us a stranglehold on the flag.
Also, after five years of Captaincy I will be stepping down from the role. It has been a very rewarding
time with a lot of high points. Obviously breaking through for our first ever Dunstan Flag was incredible
and it is a memory that I will always cherish. Before I took on the role I had no idea how much work
went into running the Club. I step back now with a far greater appreciation for the work that the
committee do. It is endless and thankless work but those people are the reason that the Club is so
strong. A huge personal thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. It is simply an
amazing place to play cricket and it has been a privilege to lead this Club for five years.

SECOND XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT - DAN STURGESS
Having won the C Grade premiership and stepping up to B Grade was always going to be a big
challenge. Add to the mix that we had 27 players come through the team and we did not have the
same 11 players together back to back for the season presents even further challenges.
Our season finished with 7 wins 3 losses and a draw and we finished second on the ladder which was
a great effort. We played in many close games throughout the year and the team spirit all season was
fantastic. Our semi- final didn’t go to plan and we lost by a single run and failed to qualify for the
Grand Final which we would have won by the way because as history shows the Bears don’t lose
Grand Finals.
Rather than reflect on the negatives and how disappointing it was to lose a semi, let’s focus on the
following players that stepped up and were a shining light for the Club this year, and hopefully for
many years to come - Michael Bell, Nick Dunmill, Todd Kitchen, Daniel Vardi, Jeremy Quin and Angus
Lane all became regular Second Eleven players for the first time for the Club. Each should be really
proud of their efforts this year and we look forward to watching you lads keep improving and becoming
great Deepy First Eleven players in the future.
It was great to have Alex Rackow as part of our side throughout the year. He has some talent without
doubt but more to the point he is a fantastic person that fitted in perfectly with the group. I would like to
thank the Bell family for providing him with a great family set up at their home that helped him enjoy
his season with the Bears.
James Lindsay and Dave Morello provided some great leadership and support throughout the season
and Dave’s season with both bat and ball was fantastic. He won the Batting Averages for the season
which was a great reward and played a vital role in us winning many games. Well done on your year.
Jeremy Quin was a real standout this year for our side. He matured really well on the field and we
loved what he brought to the team each week. He led the team with the new ball each week and took
out the bowling averages, which was a great credit to someone that has spent the previous years
playing in lower grades. We again will need Quinny to take his game to another level next season and
keep improving.
Nick Dunmill, Daniel Vardi and Angus Lane all played vital roles within our team and gave us a real
boost when they started playing around Christmas time and I am excited to watch these 3 push for
regular First Eleven games next year.
Special note to Angus Watson and Tod Kitchen who both missed out on a Final’s spot; however, stuck
around and supported the team and both these guys are great clubmen that will lift to another level
next season.
The seconds need to be the platform and we hope we have played our part this year in unearthing
some new talent and we hope the likes of Ben Hudson, Josh Avitable, Nathan Wade Sushil Bist,
James and Lucas Watt, Damian Mueller all now take the next step up and push for regular Second
Eleven cricket and beyond as this is the way for the club to push forward.
Clearly as a club we are going through a little bit of a rebuild at the top end and that is fine because at
some stage every club faces challenges/changes of personnel and it will be great to watch us become
a force again with a few new recruits and all the youth coming through to push the Bears back into
Dunstan and hopefully another period of premiership success down the track.

JD thanks for being a great clubman and offering me a chance to lead the seconds this season after
you skippered the side to a flag last year. It’s a true reflection on your character and passion for the
club mate to step down and skipper the thirds. Also to Mick Hudson for all your work with selection and
obviously to Phil Warner and his hard working committee for backing me in to do the job.
Finally to Parso who is standing down as skipper of the ones but definitely not lost to this great Club
thanks mate for all your dedication and leadership in a really great period of success for the Club.
Exciting times ahead for the Bears.

THIRD XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT - JASON DONOVAN
After just missing the finals the year prior, the 3XI had high expectations coming into 2015/16. The
overriding theme from leadership was to develop the skills – both physical and mental - of the young
cricketers (16-25) coming through the grades to prepare them for cricket at a higher level. With a
good mix of senior cricketers throughout the team also, we were looking to play finals in March.
We fell well short of the wins target for the year. We competed in pretty much every game; however,
lapses throughout the day’s cricket cost us more often than not. Some close wins and close losses to
start the season followed by a couple of poor performances had us falling a little behind the pack as
we headed towards the xmas break. The last game before xmas being played out at Latrobe Uni
against a team without a win. Unfortunately week two was not played due to the weather; however,
week one was definitely a day to remember with Nick Dunmill batting through all 72 overs to remain
undefeated on 153*. An absolute master class in batting! No surprise he was quickly promoted to the
2s and played a pivotal role for Dan’s team as they advanced towards finals.
Nick wasn’t the only player who played in the 3s before being picked to play a role in the 2s. Nathan
Wade, Sushil Bist, Harvey Brimicombe, Damian Mueller & Angus Lane also played at the higher level.
While some of the other young cricketers took strides in their cricket at various times throughout the
year, all to varying degrees of success. Lucas Watt, James Watt, Josh Avitabile, Callum Todaro, Jack
Morris, Will Vergano, Jono Walshe & Ben Hudson were all valuable members of the team when
available for the Club.
A couple of good wins post Christmas against Donvale were highlights, but these were interspersed
with some other tough losses which left us well out of finals contention. A disappointing win/loss ratio
to end the year, but the wins we had with player development will see the club move forward in the
future, hopefully as soon as the 2016/17 season.
Congratulations to the award winners for the team throughout the year. Nathan Wade claiming the
bowling award, improving every week as the season advanced. George Braoudakis easily winning the
batting award with nearly 500 runs, while averaging just under 50 for the year, including six 50s - an
amazing effort.
A big thank you from all the players who rolled through the team throughout the season, it was a
pleasure to lead you all. We tried to win games, but also have some fun and laughs while
representing the club in the spirit of the game. To all the support, particularly Phil Warner & Phil
Dunmill with their help regarding arvo teas. Thanks to all the captains and the chairman of selectors
for their assistance throughout the year also, it really is a team effort.

FOURTH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT CHARLIE WARNER
th
The 2015/16 season for the 4 XI was extremely successful despite falling short in the semi final for
the second year in a row. As a group we had a number of challenges to overcome, placed in a six
team competition, we had an unusual fixture which focused mainly on one day games and we had
number of byes in close succession. This coupled with a new leader in a team surrounded by previous
captains and a focus on junior players made for some very interesting cricket.
My goal for the year was to finish in the top 4, allowing us to play finals and to get the juniors more
nd
evolved in senior cricket. Finishing 2 overall with; 7 wins, 3 weather affected draws and 4 losses, we
played in a weather affected semi final in front of a very vocal home crowd. Unfortunately it wasn’t to
be our weekend, going down to the eventual premiers, Donvale, by 4 wickets. But what we saw in that
game and throughout the season was the balance of young and experienced players coming together
and working very well as a unit.
th
Previous 4 XI teams have focused heavily on a number of older players and veterans establishing
the back bone of the team, with a smaller number of junior players, allowing them a brief insight into
senior cricket. But this was not a viable option for us this year due to the absence of a number of the
older players and the influx of highly talented younger cricketers into the club. This created a unique
th
th
opportunity to blood a number of junior players in both the 4 and 5 XI’s and during the season; we
had 31 different people play for us and of them 16 were under the age of 20. Of those 16, the likes of
Josh Avitabile, Nick Dunmill, Ben Hudson, Jack Morris, Callum Todaro, Will Vergano, James Watt and
Lucus Watt all played in the 3XI or higher.
The down side to having so many junior cricketers is that invariably, many are unavailable after
Christmas due to other sporting commitments. This meant that we needed to tweak with the team
th
th
balance of the 4 XI which often left the 5 XI looking for players late on Thursdays. This is a
thankless task and it’s up to Mark Warner and Mike Hudson to find someone, often at short notice.
This season we had a number of outstanding batting performance with Andrew Vawser getting 3 x 50+
scores, Josh Avitabile scoring 147 against EMT and Tim Johnston’s 128* against SH. We also had a
number of 5 wicket halls with James Watt 5/4 against SH, Jac O’shea 5/13 against Mazenod and
Chithalka Navaratna (CK) 5/45 also against SH. Needless to say, these individuals were just some of
the outstanding contributors throughout the season. We also celebrated David Gorfine breaking the
club record for the number of games played at the Deepdene Bears at over 407.
Finally I would just like to thank everyone for an excellent year, in particular my Vice Captain Andrew
Watt and senior players, Andrew Vawser and David Gorfine for all their support.

FIFTH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT - MARK WARNER
After some doubt with numbers at the start of the year, we were able to lock in a 5ths team thanks to
some new and old players committing to play.
Joining the one-day format was a successful move making weekly selection much easier. We had a
good mix of players all year using a total 42 players, 13 of which were new to the club or seniors.
We spent the whole season staying in touch with finals, and even held second spot for a few weeks.
This was a great effort from the team after only getting one win last year. Unfortunately we lost some
crucial games after the Christmas break and finished one game out of the finals.
We saw some great personal achievements this season. Jack Forde who still plays under 16s won our
th
bowling average and finished 6 in the club for total wickets, all in just his first season of senior cricket.
We also welcomed Hamish Wild to the seniors who performed really well with both bat and ball.
At the higher end of the age bracket we saw Trent Bockman score back to back hundreds, Kieran
Forde averaged 60 with the bat, Mike Hudson earn his second batting average award in a row and
myself with my first 50 for the club.
Another new player into the club was Marcus Lingham. Marcus hadn’t played competitive cricket
before but took his first wicket, made some runs and turned into one of the best fielders in the team.
Consistent games from Chris Day, James Hands, Dan Morgan and many others also helped us
throughout the year.
Despite missing out on what would have been a well-deserved finals spot, overall we had a fantastic
year and saw a huge improvement in both team and individual results compared to last year. Hopefully
those new players to the club will return next year and continue a push into higher grades.
The atmosphere at every game and the efforts from any player who joined us made the season a
great success and really enjoyable to be a part of. In my first season as captain having the support of
Paul Molloy, Chris Day and Mike Hudson in particular on the field was invaluable. Off-field we had
Geoff Wild as our number one spectator every week and Phil Warner setting up our afternoon teas clearly the best in our grade. The support from each of you and the players throughout the year was
invaluable and a big thank you to each of you. Let’s look forward to next year and Go Bears!

VETERANS – A GRADE - CAMERON DUNN
This season saw the introduction of the ECA Vets competition so it was a bit of an unknown quantity
for the side.
We were placed in A Grade based on where we had played in the previous BHRDCA Vets comp.
Given all of the changes in gradings, we really had no idea how the season was going to pan out. We
had a number of injuries and players unavailable during the year, meaning that we weren't able to put
our best side on the park every week, but the side did well all things considered. We had an up and
down season, but in winning four games we did enough to qualify for the finals in 4th spot.
In the SF we came up against the best side of the year in Kew, who after thumping us in round three
repeated the dose and went into the grand final as favourites (lost). First season in the new ECA
comp, and we finished a creditable 4th. We can be proud of our efforts and build from there next
season.

VETERANS – C GRADE - TONY SMITH
th
Another great season, the 7 in a row for the original crew in Chris Abery, David Honey, Rob
Fatnowna, Paul Ward and Tony Smith.
In a close fought league, we finished 3rd prior to finals, and were confident going to the Semi against
what we believed was the weaker of the 2 top teams. Batting first we were dismissed for a dismal 69,
with Edinburgh taking 10 catches to dismiss us (a number of which were classics). We rallied with in
the field, and it took them 22 overs to overcome our mountainous total, which was slightly heartening
but overall disappointing. Edinburgh then went on to defeat the unbeaten North Balwyn in the Grand
Final in a last over win.
We had some excellent new recruits, and having 19 on the list saw us with fairly healthy stocks for the
year. Looking forward to 2016/17.

JUNIORS – PHILIP DUNMILL
At the end of the season we had 58 boys and girls play across our under 10s through to our under
16s, of which 19 put the Bear’s cap on for the first time. In addition we had nine Milo participants and
three boys play under 18s in a joint team with the Bulleen Cricket Club. To ensure all the boys/girls
were able to play each weekend, we joined up with the Box Hill Cricket Club to get an under 14C team
up and running. All of this resulted in a Deepdene Bears team being registered in every age level, the
first time in a number of years.
Along the way we had team success with two premierships and two runner ups:

U14A (Coach: John McLaughlan)
(Coach: John McLaughlan)
As expected a number of the players had success throughout the season with selection in
representative teams and Association averages. We also had nine players selected to play for senior
nd
th
teams (2 - 5 XI) during the season.
Representative players:
Emu (U14 - Pathway representation)
Craig Shield (U15 representation)
Liam Fitzpatrick
Will Vergano, Jack Forde
ECA representation:
U16
U14
U12
Ollie Smart
Harrison Free, Finlay Macrae, Alex Hart
Brinthan Mahadeva
Liam Fitzgerald won the U14A’s ECA batting average, Brinthan Mahadeva U14C’s bowling average
and Jack Carey the U12C batting averages.
This season the Club tried a new coaching set up, with the U14As coached by a past Deepdene Bears
junior player, John McLaughlan. Unlike other teams who were coached by parents or juniors players
on a voluntary basis, John was funded from additional fees from the U14As plus the Club. This
coaching will also be considered in future years, dependent upon the teams, grade and available
coaches.
The outlook for 2016/17 will hopefully see the continuation of the Club registering teams in all age
levels. This, however, raises the issue of ground availability, which has been highlighted by the
Association and Boroondara Council, which may require age levels/grades to play on another day.

Training & Match Day requirements
Dress Code
Creams in the first 11. Where possible, creams in the other teams. We are transitioning from
white. As a sun-smart club, long sleeves and hats are encouraged. Players required to
umpire must be in distinguishing colour (anything but cricket-ball red).
Times & Warm Up
Please get there in time for a warm up as directed by your captain. In the event of problems,
get on the phone ASAP
Player Code
No cheating, biting, scratching or coughing. No spitting. No squirrel grips. Seriously folks,
play the game in the great traditions of the game. Bad language on field is not accepted by
either the Club or the Association.
Our Neighbours
It goes without saying that we respect our grounds and their collocation in a residential area.
Welcome on-lookers and passers-by. Be cautious and courteous when retrieving balls and
look for a spare ball in preference to scaling paling fences.
Player Health & Safety
The club will do all in its power to preserve the health and safety of players. Tangible
examples of this are stretching and warm-up regimes, provision of clean and tidy rooms, Sun
Smart compliance and the provision of helmets for all teams. We welcome comments
feedback in this area.
