WELCOME TO THE PLAYHOUSE / EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Dear Friends,
Doug Wright is one of the most in-demand playwrights in America and one of a handful who
also directs. He directed the Page To Stage workshop of his own play, I Am My Own Wife, at the
Playhouse in 2001.
When we began our 2009/10 season planning process, I thought about the artists whom I
wanted to be represented on our stages. I immediately called Doug and said, “I’ll hold a slot
for you in our season. I want you to adapt and direct a classic.” After many conversations and
combing through many plays — from those of Arthur Schnitzler to Lillian Hellman — he called
to pitch me August Strindberg’s three-character gem, Creditors. The last play of the Swedish
master’s trilogy on marriage hasn’t had a major production in this country for some time. I was
excited by the idea of what Doug would unearth — both as adaptor and director of this play.
Strindberg was a controversial figure throughout his life, particularly when his work centered on relationships between
men and women. He believed that relationships were psychological battlefields on which love, hatred and jealousy drove
couples to their doom. While he intended his plays to be impartial and objective, essentially a kind of science, he also
managed to disarm his audiences by changing their perceptions of his three-dimensional characters, whose conflicted
emotions render them sympathetic, sometimes comic, and utterly human.
Not long after that initial conversation I received Doug’s adaptation. Although I knew he would never deliver a musty,
antique-shop version of the play, I was absolutely delighted by this taut, gripping and sexy psychological thriller in which
playful games become dangerously insidious. When I was in New York this past summer, I had the pleasure of hearing the
play read in Doug’s living room. I relished the opportunity to offer three meaty roles to amazing actors who would chew
on the play’s deliciously twisted emotional labyrinth, particularly under the direction of a contemporary playwright on
intimate terms — writer to writer — with his predecessor’s masterful work. I think Strindberg would be pleased.
Sincerely,
Christopher Ashley

BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Dear Patrons and Friends,
On December 9, the Playhouse will host our second annual Innovation Night, a networking
event that brings together the leaders of San Diego’s biotech, high-tech, clean-tech and
associated service industries for an extraordinary evening. If you are a member of this
community, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to mix, mingle and see great theatre with
hundreds of leaders from these innovative fields.
San Diego boasts one of the largest biotechnology and high-tech economies in the world,
producing major drug, medical device, diagnostic, biological and wireless products that have
led to breakthroughs in healthcare, technology and beyond.
We welcome these pacesetters to our theatre so that they may witness firsthand the innovation
that unfolds on our stages while also establishing business contacts and socializing with their colleagues.
This event, which directly supports new play development and education programs here at the Playhouse, is hosted by
an incredible team: Dr. Ivor Royston, Managing Partner of Forward Ventures; Len J. Lauer, COO of QUALCOMM; Duane
Roth, CEO of CONNECT and Susan Dubé, a veteran pharmaceutical industry consultant. With Lead Sponsorship from
QUALCOMM and Biomed Realty Trust, Inc., we are assured to repeat last year’s sell-out sensation.
Don’t miss out on the innovation community’s networking event of the year! For information on tickets or sponsorship,
please contact Jill McIntyre, Manager of Corporate Development, at (858) 550-1070 x137 or jmcintyre@ljp.org. You can

OUR MISSION
La Jolla Playhouse advances
theatre as an art form and as a
vital social, moral and political
platform by providing unfettered
creative opportunities for the
leading artists of today and
tomorrow. With our youthful
spirit and eclectic, artist-driven
approach, we will continue to
cultivate a local and national
following with an insatiable
appetite for audacious and
diverse work. In the future,
San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse
will be considered singularly
indispensable to the worldwide
theatre landscape, as we
become a permanent safe harbor
for the unsafe and surprising.
The day will come when it will
be essential to enter the La Jolla
Playhouse village in order to get
a glimpse of what is about to
happen in American theatre.
