A year worth admiring Annual Report 2011– 2012 1 9432SM Report 2012.indd 1 10/25/12 3:34 PM The transformative power of insp 2 9432SM Report 2012.indd 2 10/25/12 3:34 PM The fall is a vivid reminder of the palette of opportunities at Saint Mary’s University, and of the many brushstrokes that go into creating another class of inspired, global citizens. This has been a year of renewal, growth and academic achievement. A $26-million revitalization of our iconic McNally Building; our new Homburg Centre for Health & Wellness; and national recognition for our growing research capacity and sustainability-focused MBA Program have helped shape a landscape of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and international perspectives. As we direct our efforts toward the redevelopment of our north east campus, I invite you to view the highlights of this year, and to join me in celebrating the remarkable contributions of Saint Mary’s scholars, students and graduates. Their many successes paint a compelling picture of what this University is about – and what distinguishes it from other institutions. As well, I encourage you to view Saint Mary’s University’s gallery of donors and to read a few stories of transformative gifts. The generosity chronicled in the report is felt in many ways. By inspiring our promising students and supporting their studies, whether in arts or science or business, undergrad or graduate, we make it possible for them to make an enduring mark on this world. nspiration. Sincerely, Dr. J. Colin Dodds President and Vice Chancellor 1 9432SM Report 2012.indd 1 10/25/12 3:34 PM The Saint Mary’s University campus is green in more ways than the obvious. 2 9432SM Report 2012.indd 2 10/25/12 3:34 PM A prominent display of sustainability Like our Atrium’s three-storey living wall – a natural air filter that’s the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada – Saint Mary’s University’s approach to sustainability is a breath of fresh air. Want to know how much electricity is consumed in the residence buildings? Or how much water flows from the taps in the McNally Building? Current and historic data for our consumption of water, gas, electricity and other fuels is only a mouse-click away on the University’s Sustainability Dashboard, a user-friendly web application that details the real-time energy intensity of 13 buildings on campus. Saint Mary’s has a long history of addressing issues related to sustainability through education and research. As the final piece of the University’s $5.2-million energy retrofit initiative, the Sustainability Dashboard is a vital component in transforming the campus into a “learning laboratory” that engages students, staff and faculty in reducing our eco-footprint. A brilliant APProach to Shakespeare Using software developed by Jay Williams, an instructional multimedia analyst at Saint Mary’s, English professor David Wilson created a novel app that makes it easier to understand the humour in Twelfth Night, Shakespeare’s comedic tale of romance and misadventure. “Even the most dedicated English students struggle with Elizabethan language and verse,” explains Dr. Wilson. “It makes sense to reach out to them in a language they understand.” 3 9432SM Report 2012.indd 3 10/25/12 3:34 PM The broad strokes: our BA is uniquely valuable. Third-year Psychology major Melanie Duffy expected to gain valuable work experience in her summer co-op position as Program Assistant Making the most of a blank canvas After a decade of transformational change, and an investment of more than $100 million in new and renewed infrastructure, Saint Mary’s with Capital District Health Authority’s Seniors’ Mental Health Team. Modern in appearance and global in flavour, “A co-op option for our BA degree is a unique the new building will be a portal to the niche,” says Dr. Esther E. Enns, Dean of Saint Mary’s community: a place for local and international Faculty of Arts. “Although almost 80 post-secondary learners to study, apply their knowledge institutions in Canada offer co-op programs, the and connect. vast majority are in the sciences and business. International leadership in environmental science, a rapidly growing research capacity, and a faculty with a reputation for excellence made Saint Mary’s University the logical choice. Since arriving here in 2011, Dr. Naji Ajmi has benefitted from working closely with Dr. Linda Campbell, one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, and a renowned researcher in the contamination of water systems by invasive species and metals such as mercury and arsenic. In establishing a hub for education in environmental science, Saint Mary’s offers opportunities for students and professors from diverse disciplines to solve complex global problems in our new School of the Environment, the Maritime Centre for Green Chemistry, and the only green roof research facility in Atlantic Canada. 6 9432SM Report 2012.indd 6 10/25/12 3:34 PM A stronger global influence A trailblazer in global outreach, Saint Mary’s is exploring opportunities to assist Ghana’s All Nations University College, an institution that boasts more than 2,000 students and offers courses that range from electronics and communications to entrepreneurship and engineering. Meanwhile, a new agreement between Saint Mary’s and China’s Beihua University lays the groundwork for future cooperation and builds on the strong connections to China celebrated with the 2011 opening of the Confucius Institute at Saint Mary’s, a campus centre that promotes Chinese language, culture and commerce. A devoted friend to Saint Mary’s, she passed away in March 2010 at the age of 92, leaving the University a substantial bequest, funding the Jane Shaw Law & C. Anthony Law Permanent Collection Fund. Gallery Director Robin Metcalfe describes this gift as an ongoing memorial to the substantial contributions made by Jane Shaw Law and her husband to the artistic community in Nova Scotia and, in particular, to the Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery. Fourth-year Philosophy major Nikolas Hamm is one of many Saint Mary’s students to benefit from Shaw Law’s generosity. “The Jane Shaw Law Scholarship “This scholarship truly means a lot to me.” allows me to eliminate one of my work shifts over the year, providing a much-needed extra day each week for my studies,” he says. “It may not seem like much, but it helped me achieve a GPA of 4.1.” Nikolas Hamm 10 9432SM Report 2012.indd 10 10/25/12 3:34 PM th e donors whose generosity makes beautiful things possible. A giving perspective Rowland Marshall describes himself as a small-scale philanthropist, but there’s nothing small about the support the former philosophy professor provides for Saint Mary’s students. Marshall and his wife, Margó Takacs Marshall, established a variety of student awards, including the Joyce Elizabeth Marshall Hsia Poetry Award, the Margó Marshall Entrance Bursary, the Margó Marshall Scholarship, and the Marshall Award for Excellence in a Masters in Philosophy Dissertation Award. After Margó’s passing in 2010, Rowland Marshall honoured her by endowing the Margó Takacs Marshall Prize for Excellence in Short Story Writing, to be offered for the first time in the winter of 2013, concurrent with the 25th anniversary of the Marshall’s Hsia Poetry Prize. In considering the best course of action when faced with the death of a loved one, Marshall acknowledges the tendency to withdraw from new experiences. His recent gift, however, reflects a continued commitment to engaging with the world – a fitting tribute for Margó Takacs Marshall, a generous and caring woman who became a published author and blogger “I am guided by Margó’s generosity – and her belief in the importance of contributing to the community.” Rowland Marshall at the age of 80. 11 9432SM Report 2012.indd 11 10/25/12 3:34 PM A study in philanthropy Board members of Killam Properties Inc. (TSX:KMP), were enthusiastic when company President and CEO Philip Fraser suggested that, each year, they pool individual contributions of $10,000 in Killam shares and take turns designating a charitable cause. The Saint Mary’s University community was equally enthusiastic when Fraser, the first to select a recipient, suggested funding scholarships at Saint Mary’s. As the result, members of the Killam Board contributed a gift valued at $100,000 for the endowment of two annual Killam Properties Inc. Scholarships for full-time undergraduate students in the Sobey School of Business. As a Saint Mary’s alumnus (MBA ’88), a member of Saint Mary’s Board of Governors and Chair of the University’s Advancement Committee, Fraser takes pride in the Killam Properties Inc. Scholarships and is pleased with the idea of individuals supporting a gift in the name of the company. “The members of Killam’s board all believe in giving back to the community,” he says. “By coming together as a group, they can make a more significant contribution.” No stranger to philanthropy, Killam Properties Inc. contributes to the Halifax YMCA, Feed Nova Scotia, the Red Cross, the Mental Health Foundation and a pilot program that makes music lessons for children more affordable. In the past few years, it has also donated five fully furnished apartments to hospitals in Halifax, Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton. Killam Properties’ Philip Fraser is proud to be part of a community gift to 12 9432SM Report 2012.indd 12 Sobey School of Business students. 10/25/12 3:34 PM We thank you for your continued generosity Wellness has only been open for a few months, but it’s already hard to imagine Saint Mary’s University’s campus without this modern, new facility with its signature, sail-like entrance canopy, light-filled lobby and well-appointed gymnasium and studio spaces. Named for Dr. Richard Homburg, whose $5-million donation for the project was one of the largest single gifts in the history of the University, the multi-purpose complex is the most visible symbol of Saint Mary’s InBalance initiative, a multi-faceted plan which includes resources, opportunities and infrastructure designed to promote and facilitate healthy lifestyles for Saint Mary’s students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members. In translating the principles of health and wellness into concrete programs, activities and learning experiences, the Homburg Centre is a compelling invitation to embrace healthy lifestyles. The rival of any fitness facility in the province, it reinforces the importance of health and fitness at a time when students are making critical life choices.
