I am proud to be a member of organized dentistry, amazed at the dedication of those with whom I serve and grateful for the relationships fostered. I follow in the foot steps of many wonderful dentist-friends who are passionate about our profession. I would like to personally invite each member of NEDDA to our fall meeting. One of my class mates from The University of Florida College of Dentistry, Dr. Gerard Lemongello, will speak. Gerard has pursued with excellence every endeavor he has undertaken since I first met him at UFCD. He has worked closely with Dr. Larry Rosenthal in New York City (" Dentist to the "Stars"), transforming not just, as we all know, smiles, but lives as well. Please come, engage in the resources, enjoy the fellowship of our organization, share what's happening in your little operatory of the world. You are served by a capable and collegial board. You should know: Dr. Rick Stevenson is President - Elect of the Florida Dental Association. The gavel will be turned over to him next June. His calendar is vey full as he meets with individuals to formulate policy for the needs of our very diverse state. We have welcomed Dr. Suzanne Ebert, dental director of the I.M. Sulzbacher Center, as member at-large. Dr. Ebert serves a demographic of patients vastly different from the majority of private practitioners in Jacksonville. Her insight in how to best meet the needs of the under-served will be invaluable. The North East District will be represented on the 17th District Delegation to the American Dental Association in October by Dr. Andy Brown, Dr. Dan Gesek, Dr. Rick Stevenson and myself. To be honest, I had no idea what I was signing up for when I volunteered. Meeting leaders these past few months from around the state has been an eye-opening experience in the legislative process. I look forward to serving this organization and assisting our members meet their maximum potential as we strive to meet the dental needs of the citizens of the state of Florida. Sincerely, Linda A. Trotter, DMD, FAGD MEMBER ASSISTANCE NEEDED In order to better assess the needs of our members we would like to know how you wish to receive future issues of the NEDDA newsletter? I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Immediate Past President, Dr. Richard Aguila. As a JDS board member, I have had the privilege to work alongside some outstanding individuals and leaders. Over the past several years, the support and enthusiasm for the JDS has grown tremendously. Rick built upon that momentum and took our organization to the next level. Our membership numbers are up, corporate sponsorship has never been stronger, and our outreach to the community continues to grow. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Ms. Betty Hutchens. Her 18 years of devotion to the Jacksonville Dental Society have been a blessing. We are on the right track to continued success. With continued success in mind, we have put together an outstanding 2013-2014 JDS Calendar of Events. We will kick-off the season on September 20, 2013 with the mandatory courses “Prevention of Dental Errors” and “Domestic Violence”, which are required for dental licensure renewal. We are fortunate to have several national speakers presenting a wide variety of clinical topics, including Dr. Will Martin, Dr. Christopher Barwacs, and our own, Dr. Frank Cervone. The Jacksonville Dental Society will once again team up with the Northeast District Dental Association and the Clay County Dental Society to host a full day CE course on March 21, 2014 at the Jaguars Stadium, EverBank Field. We are thrilled to feature world renowned speaker Dr. David Hornbrook, who will be presenting “Hot Topics in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry.” Please be sure to mark your calendars for this truly world-class course. I am pleased to announce our new partnership with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars organization has graciously offered their support to the Jacksonville Dental Society and will be sponsoring several of our events. One of which is the JDS Family Tailgate Party and Game Package on October 20, 2013 at EverBank Field. The Jacksonville Jaguars will host the San Diego Chargers. Please see the enclosed brochure for all of the details and RSVP early! I encourage each of you to participate in our annual “Give Kids a Smile” campaign in February. As the past Chairman of this event, I can tell you firsthand that it is the most rewarding experience. The JDS Annual Golf Tournament will be held at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club on April 11, 2014. As always, we will round out the year with our Spouse’s Night and Installation of Officers evening of celebration in May. I am excited for the opportunity to serve the membership of our organization. It is the professional camaraderie and face-to-face interaction of organized dentistry that allows us to come together to better ourselves, our community, and our profession. Christopher M. Geric, D.M.D. CLAY COUNTY DENTAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the summer comes to a close it is time to begin our 2013-2104 year with the Clay County Dental Society. My staff has sent out all the membership packets and the schedule is being finalized. The first two meetings are set with the first being on September 18th. I would like to take a moment to first remember a hero of dentistry which we lost this year. Dr. Ted Haeussner was not only a great dental clinician, a leader in the dental community, and a mentor for many; he was simply one of the most likable, honest and truly caring men I had the pleasure of knowing. He will always be remembered in Clay County and beyond. The first two meetings of the CCDS are focused on the growth and strengthening of our dental practices. We are beginning to see a gradual end to the Great Recession and it is time to move forward and grow our practices and move away from these past five years. Our first meeting on September 18th will be on “Understanding Legal Tools: The Key to Lawsuit Prevention and Tax Reduction by Daniel J. McNeff. Our second meeting will be on Marketing a Dental Practice in the 21st Century, Understanding the Patient and Marketplace of Today presented by Patti Williamson on November 13th. Special thanks also goes out to our valued sponsors: Kirk Gravelle with Morgan Stanley, Harmony Dental Lab, Jan Conrad with Regions Bank, and Jon Tabor with Ameriprise Financial Services. The continued support of these sponsors is greatly appreciated this upcoming year. Membership to the Clay County Dental Society is open to any dentist which practices within Clay County and is a member of the ADA. Membership packets are available from my office, 904-278-6980 or via email DrStrout@att.net. If you are new to Clay County or just have been away from the Dental Society for a time, please consider joining! Sincerely, Stephen Strout, DMD, MS 5 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 NEW MEMBERS We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest members: Dr. Paul Boldt Dr. Thomas Brown - Endodontics Dr. Patricia Clark Dr. Nicholas Comerfond Dr. Mark Dawley Dr. Melanie DeLoach Dr. Pierre Gosselin Dr. Michaela Kahley Dr. Paul Kolodziej Dr. Steven Mantegari - Oral Surgeon Dr. Ashley Phares Dr. Leslie Platock Dr. Linh Truong Dr. James Weaver - Pediatric Dentistry Dr. Wyman Woodward *All members are practicing or are planning to practice in Jacksonville unless otherwise noted. Our new FDA president, Terry Buckenheimer, from the West Coast Dental Association, headed this meeting. The board's major focus for this upcoming year is increasing our FDA membership numbers. Currently, 57% of the Florida licensed dentists are members of the FDA. Over the past few years the association has seen nearly a 2% annual decrease in the membership. Consequently, The Board of Trustees through the recommendation of the Council On Membership, retained a regional marketing company to help in our membership drive and deliver a positive message to the Florida public encouraging them to seek their dental care through an FDA member dentist. With all of the benefits the FDA offers (continuing education, FDAS insurance services, member discount dental supply purchasing through Darby Dental, peer review, dental advocacy programs) at an affordable cost, the board feels FDA membership is a great value both to you and the potential new member. I would encourage each of you to engage a new dentist in the community and invite them to join the FDA. Our Northeast executive director, Debbie DeVille, can be reached at ddeville@nedda.org. Debbie can provide you with the new membership registration information. On another note, the FDA governmental affairs office has been busy this fall. FDA president, Dr Buckenheimer and our own Dr. Rick Stevenson, FDA president elect, Drew Eason, our new FDA executive director along with our governmental affairs staff recently met with Governor Rick Scott in Tallahassee. Drs. Buckenheimer and Stevenson informed Governor Scott of all the great pro bono work our FDA members have provided to the Florida public. The pro bono activities reviewed included our volunteer efforts with Project Dentist Care and Give Kids A Smile activities. They also wanted Governor Scott to be aware of our continued legislative efforts to pass through this upcoming legislative session our Non-Covered Services Insurance Bill. Currently, the major dental insurance carriers would like to dictate the fees their providers bill for non-covered services. The non-covered insurance bill, which the FDA is trying to pass, would prevent these insurance companies from dictating the non-covered fees. Finally, on a local level, I encourage each of you to join me at the upcoming NEDDA meeting on Friday, October 4, 2013. Dr. Linda Trotter has invited Dr. Gerard Lemongello to speak on "A Systematic Approach To Comprehensive Treatment Planning For Aesthetics And Function". This should be a great review of comprehensive dental care for the dental team. Please contact Debbie (904-7377545 or ddeville@nedda.org) for all the registration details. Respectfully submitted, Dr. Steve Cochran, Trustee for the NEDDA 7 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 8 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 PROTECT YOURSELF FROM PRIVACY VIOLATIONS: USE THE FREE SECURE EMAIL SERVICE Technology such as digital x-rays, have greatly transformed the practice of dental care. Gone are the days of chemicals and dark rooms to develop dental radiographs. In addition to the benefit of being instantly viewed, digital x-rays can be more easily shared between referring dentists collaborating on a patient’s care. Too often, however, unsecure email is used to share patient information and radiology. Exchanging protected health information (PHI) using an unencrypted system leaves health care providers vulnerable to HIPAA violations. Dentists across the state are signing up for the Direct Secure Messaging (DSM) service offered by the Florida Health Information Exchange (HIE). DSM is an encrypted email service that allows users to safely communicate and exchange patient protected health information (PHI). As a web-based service, DSM can be securely used on any device with an internet connection (including smartphones and tablets). No special software is required, and it’s free for providers, meaning DSM is easily incorporated into an office’s existing workflow. DSM is also user-friendly. The service will send a notification to your personal email so you know you’ve received a secure email. Automatic read receipts let you know that your intended recipient has opened a message. Incoming emails can also be copied to multiple members of you team so you never have to worry about emails sitting in the mailbox of staff who are out of the office or working different shifts or locations. Direct Secure Messaging makes referrals easy and safe. Instantly sending patient information between family dentists and specialists such as oral surgeons, endodontists and others. As more types of health care professionals join DSM, the service increases in utility. To find out more about participating, or getting others in your community to participate, please visit www.Florida-HIE.net or send an email to the Florida HIE Team at FLHII@ahca.myflorida.com. 9 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 10 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 SULZBACHER CENTER UPDATE By, Dr. Suzanne Ebert , FAGD The Sulzbacher Center’s dental clinic, located at 611 E. Adams Street in downtown Jacksonville, is pleased to provide comprehensive and emergency dental services to the homeless population of Northeast Florida. This 5 room dental clinic boasts digital x-ray, fully equipped private operatories and all the supplies necessary to provide the highest quality dental care to this significantly underserved population. The clinic is open from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday and is staffed by a Dental Director, Dr. Suzanne Ebert, as well as senior dental students from the University of Florida, who carry out 2 week rotations through the clinic. The Sulzbacher Beaches Healthcare Clinic, located at 850 6 th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach, has 2 dental operatories and is staffed 2-3 days/week with staff dentist, Dr. John Joyner, and volunteer dentists from the community. Both of these dental clinics provide an invaluable service to the community. Emergency treatment provided on a walk in basis each day accounts for about 15% of the total treatment provided. This service gives individuals a place to have definitive therapy for dental infections, thereby decreasing the utilization of our area emergency rooms. In addition, the comprehensive care and oral health education provided is increasing the awareness of the importance of achieving and maintaining good oral health in this high risk population. Since January 2013 at the downtown clinic location, over 1000 infected teeth were removed, over 500 restorative procedures completed and 154 removable prosthetic devices fabricated. If you have an interest in contributing to the clinics, the immediate needs include: Volunteers to provide direct patient care in one of our clinics. Funds that will be used to update /maintain equipment, purchase supplies and help cover laboratory fees for needy patients. Aside from being one of only two FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) clinics in Jacksonville, which provides high quality medical, dental and psychiatric care, the Sulzbacher Center is home to over 350 homeless individuals, including approximately 35 families and 70 children. In order to meet their needs and help these individuals get back on their feet, the Center offers many Life Skills classes ranging from parenting classes to smoking cessation programs. The Center also recognizes that homeless US military veterans have unique needs of their own and has 18 semi-private rooms specially designated for our servicemen who find themselves in need of Sulzbacher Center services. Just recently, the Center elected to help our healthcare system by providing medical respite care to homeless individuals upon discharge from the hospital. With nowhere to go for continuing care, these individuals historically were likely to be re-admitted to the hospital with problems that would otherwise be preventable with proper care. The Sulzbacher Center is the largest homeless services provider in Northeast Florida. If you would like any information about Sulzbacher Center clinics or shelter, please feel free to contact the dental clinic at 904-394-8060. LOCAL “TOOTH FAIRY” HERO The Sulzbacher Center Dental Clinic would like to recognize the contribution of a local third grader, Kevin McAfee, who is one of 10 winners nationwide of the “Be a tooth fairy hero” contest sponsored by Tom’s of Maine. Kevin’s artwork won $10,000 for the dental clinic at the Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless. On August 14th, Kevin toured the clinic to see where the money went: a new X-ray machine, repairs to a dental chair and a new surgical handpiece. “Kevin’s donation meant the world to our center,” said Allison Vega, Sulzbacher spokeswoman. “We had no idea how we were going to afford to fix our X-ray machine, and Kevin’s donation came in the nick of time.” Kevin entered the contest to help the Sulzbacher Center, where he and his family volunteer, and requested that the funds go to the nonprofit. Kevin’s artwork depicts the tooth fairy flying from a castle to collect teeth. The talented third-grader has won a variety of contests, including being chosen by first lady Michelle Obama as one of two co-winners in the White House Easter Egg Roll Poster Contest. His aunt, Kelly Delaney, is an art teacher at Atlantic Coast High School and has fostered his artistic skills. 11 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 DENTAL QUALITY ALLIANCE APPROVES FIRST SET OF PERFORMANCE MEASURES DENTAL CARIES IN CHILDREN: PREVENTION AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT CHICAGO, Aug 23, 2013 — The Dental Quality Alliance (DQA), comprised of multiple stakeholders from across the oral health community, was established by the American Dental Association to develop performance measures for oral health care. The DQA’s first set, Dental Caries in Children: Prevention and Disease Management, includes 10 tested and validated performance measures in oral health care: use of services; preventive services; treatment services; oral evaluation; topical fluoride intensity; sealant use in 6-9 years; sealant use in 10-14 years; care continuity; usual source of services; and per-member per-month cost. “Since its formation in 2008, the DQA has worked tirelessly at developing these consensus-based quality measures,” said Dr. David May, chair of the ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs. The DQA collaborated with the University of Florida Institute for Child Health Policy to evaluate and test the feasibility, validity, reliability and usability of each measure before issuing final approval. The data used to craft the measures came from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, Texas Health and Human Services Commission and DentaQuest. The testing was, in part, funded through a grant from the American Dental Association Foundation. “The ADA Foundation is very proud to be part of this significant effort to develop the first fully validated set of performance measures for dentistry,” said Dr. David Whiston, ADA Foundation president. “We believe it is consistent with our mission to help advance the quality of care for the good of patients.” “As the only comprehensive multi-stakeholder collaborative,” said Dr. May, “the DQA is well-positioned to collaborate, coordinate and lead in measure development in dentistry through its members’ experience, expertise and support.” For more information about DQA please visit ada.org 12 Northeast District Dental Association • Fall 2013 CLASSIFIEDS ARGYLE LEASE SPACE AVAILABLE: at Crescent Hill Office Park.
