I remember the day when my student, Faigy*, first came to SCHI.
She was a timid little girl with an awkward gait and a sweet smile. Faced with
a host of serious medical problems, she could barely walk, eat, or play. She was
able to say two sounds, which she repeated over and over to express herself to the world.
Step by step. Word by word. Day by day. That would be our motto. When every breath is a
struggle for a little four year old student, every tiny accomplishment looms large.
Slowly, very slowly, the efforts of her devoted teachers and therapists began to bear fruit. She
thrived on the atmosphere of warmth and determination in SCHI. Faigy began to emerge, as
an adorable little girl with a sunny personality and a giving nature.
When Faigy’s mother tearfully approached me with a gift on Chanuka, she brushed me away
when I protested that I did not need a present. “You have given us the greatest gift in the
world,” she told me, “The wonderful gift of Faigy.”
Every child is a gift. Some have glitzy wrappings, while others are wrapped in simple paper.
SCHI unwraps each gift with love, peeling away the outer wrappings to bring out each child’s
potential. Day by day, they continue unwrapping the layers, revealing the beautiful facets of our
special students’ souls.

, the School for Children with
Hidden Intelligence was founded seventeen years ago by Rabbi Osher
Eisemann. From its first five students, to the current enrollment of over 180
children, SCHI has grown quickly, never compromising on its high standards
of Special Education. In March 2007, a new, state of the art facility opened
its doors. There, children of all ages learn to walk, speak, think for themselves
and feed themselves. Dedicated teachers and therapists put their hearts and
souls into the students. Disability is conquered through warmth, love and joy.

Ever since my five year old daughter, Racheli*, started going to the integrated
program of SCHI, I have seen a tremendous difference in the way she treats special
children and all of her peers.
She has an unusually high level of understanding and acceptance for all, even those
who are “different”.
She understands that wheelchairs, hearing aids and therapy are a part of everyday life
for some, and she has learned to respect it.
Last Sunday, I gave Racheli a set of various colored play dough to play with. She took
the sand-colored play dough and stuck it in her ear.
“Look Mommy”, she said. “I have a hearing aid just like Nechama*!”
Thank you SCHI not only for loving and accepting the special needs children in our
community, but for teaching the world to do the same.
