About Peek&Poke: Retro Computer Club The “Calculus” association was founded in the beginning of 2007, with the aim of establishing the first Croatian museum of computers and information technology equipment. The museum, named “PEEK&POKE”, was formally opened on September 22, 2007, in the presence of a large number of guests and news reporters. The museum’s specific fund as well as theme has placed it among rare of its kind in the world and as such, it represents a unique and inevitable touristic destination in the center of the city of Rijeka. It spreads on two floors across 300 square meters. Two thirds of the area is used for exhibits while the remaining third is dedicated to education. The museum’s exhibits display the development of computers and information technology from its beginnings till present time, and also some exhibits showing the latest technological achievements are displayed for comparison purposes. Although some computer history artifacts have been irrevocably lost, over 1.000 of the displayed exhibits are worth seeing. Within the museum there is an active library and reading room, retro playroom, presentation hall, classroom (workshop), an inevitable gift shop and NetCorner. NetCorner is one of the most modern in town and enables visitors to access the Internet. In the library, visitors can read the latest Croatian and foreign computer magazines, review old computer magazines as well as new literature. The retro playroom offers entertainment on forerunners of today’s game consoles, as well as the educational traffic simulation “Urban Jungle” – Rijeka’s popular product in which PEEK&POKE has a notable position in the virtual world. The presentation hall is intended for different kind of manifestations and events, with an emphasis on the presentation of new products (hardware, software and literature…) and events promoting cyberculture or other computing culture related events. During its first two years of operation, PEEK&POKE hosted the celebration of 15h anniversary of IBM’s presence in Croatia, presented the latest edition of the computer game “Urban Jungle”, photo session by Damir Spanic, participated at “Museum nights” and organized a two month program to honor the anniversary of the landing on the Moon – PEEK@MOON. Every day more visitors are coming to the museum, and so far over 4500 visitors have been registered. A considerable number of visitors are foreign guests and highly positive reviews can be read in the Impressions Book. The case for the program is the year 2010 – the year of the Second space odyssey, and the theme would be used to promote Rijeka as an intelligent digital city and a city of knowledge! A black Monolith would draw public attention to the program on Rijeka’s Korzo thoroughfare. Monolith is a universal cosmic symbol of intelligent life forms (its proportions 1:4:9 can’t incur incidentally by natural forces, but only by action of intelligent life). From the legendary novel by Arthur C. Clarke and the cult movie classic by Stanley Kubrick, we know that the Monolith is the symbol of creation, a symbol of new life and tolerance of diversity. In agreement with the City of Rijeka, this installation would be done “secretly” during the night, and no information would be issued the following day, to create an aura of mystery about how the Monolith from the movie found itself in Rijeka. Certainly, a lot of media interest would be raised, and we believe that the press would cover this story, since such an advent is extremely visually attractive and at the moment most recognizable. Viral promotion through YouTube and other similar services is also guaranteed. Symbolizing the human curiosity, the drive for knowledge and research, the effort to move the boundaries of our civilization, two “non-life” characters are present in the entire “Odyssey” saga – the HAL computer as artificial intelligence (whose replica was already made at the computer museum – and during 2010 we plan to additionally improve it) and the legendary Monolith as the universal symbol of knowledge, intelligence, openness and tolerance. The entire event would be turned into a cultural attraction by performance of the works of Richard Strauss and other classical composers featured in Science Fiction literature or motion pictures, in cooperation with the philharmonic orchestra of the Croatian National Theatre of Rijeka. During the final night, on the Korzo, the event would be additionally enhanced with the unusual performance by the Tesla Orchestra – a world attraction that during its performance uses a 2-megavolt Tesla coil that plays music with “lightning bolts”! After the closing of the events on the Korzo, the Monolith will be transferred to the University Campus in Rijeka, as a permanent monument to knowledge and intelligence. The computer museum PEEK&POKE (Calculus Association) is the bearer of the project, sponsored by the City of Rijeka, promoted by the Rijeka Tourist Board and co-organized with the Association of gifted computer specialists Rijeka, the multimedia studio Kreativni odjel (Creative department), the Astronomical center Rijeka, Art Kino Croatia (movie theatre), the Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc, the bookstore RiBook, Antikvarijat Mali neboder (antique shop), STeP-Ri (Science and Technology park of the University of Rijeka) and numerous volunteers that have been involved also in the PEEK@MOON project. The program will last for one full month, with a rich program at the computer museum (workshops, lectures, exhibitions, presentations, competitions…) as well as movies at Art Kino Croatia, literary discussions and concerts. Various manifestations – including the grand finale featuring The Tesla Orchestra will also take place on the Korzo, making the events available to the widest possible audience. The intended audience of the project are all of Rijeka’s citizens, as well as any visitors happening to be in the city at the time of the program happenings – considering the current timing places the events in the tourist season, this will guarantee a very international audience. With the exception of the Monolith that takes the role of monument, all other products of the thematic creation within the project, realized through different workshops at the museum PEEK&POKE remain part of the holdings of the museum and permanent exhibit setup (as was the case also with PEEK@MOON). The Tesla Coil is a high-voltage device capable of generating enormous arcs of raw electricity. Using advanced high-power electronics, it is possible to modulate these arcs of electricity so that they produce tones at differing frequencies, which is where the music comes from. The arcs of electricity actually produce the music, without the aid of any speakers or amplifiers. The Tesla Orchestra's first performance was at a large-scale arts and technology festival called the Ingenuity Festival, located in Cleveland Ohio USA. A comedic musical was presented, featuring futuristic dance and music routines, exploding ribbon dances, electrified stage props, and a 2 megavolt tesla coil hidden inside a large 4-meter tall stage prop that transformed into a lightning-bolt-spewing robot. The final scene showcased Ian Charnas in a special high-voltage suit, battling the lightning bolts produced by the tesla coil. Currently the Tesla Orchestra is designing a much larger tesla coil, which will be amongst the world's largest musical tesla coils to date. During the 2010 performance season they plan on performing at corporate events, music concerts, sporting games, and other events. Performers' biographies: Ian Charnas | +1 (216) 402-4994 | ian.charnas@gmail.com Ian Charnas graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2005 with dual-degrees in computer and mechanical engineering. In addition to running a profitable web technologies company for the past decade, he has also spread out into the world of art. Ian blends art and technology in his wildly-themed parties and fundraisers, stand-up comedy shows, and public tech-themed performances such as Boltz, the 2009 Ingenuity Festival performance under the name Tesla Orchestra, incorporating a 2-megavolt musical Tesla Coil. In his spare time, Ian works tirelessly on issues of poverty and the environment. As part of his non-profit work, he has organized budgets as small as one hundred dollars and as large as a quarter million dollars, and always comes in under budget. Ian has lived in all corners of the world, from New York to New Orleans, from India to Nepal, but always finds himself back in Cleveland, where he believes the clay is moist for anyone looking to change the world. Ed Burwell | +1 (216) 212-9399 | edb10@case.edu Ed Burwell's engineering career has included the design and construction of low-atmospheric rockets, highpower laser design, radio-frequency electronics, micro-controller engineering, power electronics, chemistry, and optics, just to name a few. In addition to multiple degrees in theoretical physics, electrical engineering, and industrial electronics, Ed also commands an encyclopedic knowledge of practical engineering methodologies. High-voltage experimentation has long been one of his hobbies, including Tesla Coils in particular, and he is currently designing and building one of the world's largest musical tesla coils to date, for use in the Tesla Orchestra. Ed currently lives in Cleveland Heights with his wife Deanna and his two sons. Zachariah Durr | +1 (440) 212-2727 | http://zartdart.com | zartdart@gmail.com Zachariah Durr is a New-York based Filmmaker and Performance Artist, who recently finished directing a television series for the Independent Film Channel called “Food Party”. As with much of his work, Zachariah called upon his background in stand-up comedy and theatre to create the fantastical, peewee-herman-meetsrachel-ray scripts used in the TV series. Graduating in 2005 with a Fine Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art, he maintains strong ties to his hometown of Cleveland Ohio, and often travels back to help orchestrate performances with groups such as Red (an orchestra) and The Tesla Orchestra. Currently Zachariah is back in New York, script-writing and directing for several independent television pilots. Udruga građana "Calculus", Dubrovačka 6, 51000 Rijeka matični broj: 2217902 • žiro-račun: 2340009-1110274631 tel: 091/780-5709 • 098/431-304 • 051/680-770 e-mail: sveto@peekpoke.hr web: www.peekpoke.hr RETRO COMPUTER CLUB RIJEKA Project justification The question that comes to mind is: why put on such an ambitious, diverse project. In our minds the actual question is, why aren't more of these multi-discipline, multi-cultural, multi-media programs presented to the public. It may seem that combining elements of urban art (the Monolith installation), film projections, music concerts, physics lectures into a single event makes little to no sense. After all, we, the public, are used to singularly themed festivals, film festivals, book festivals, art festivals, theater ... etc. So how could a cornucopia of events have any mass appeal? When we started our museum PEEK&POKE, the underlying fear was that we were creating a space where only a select few would find anything of interest. We thought the museum would only attract the stereotypical "geek", that is an expert in clock speeds and how 80's soldering techniques led to increased reliability in computers. But, in the subsequent 2 years, our patrons have been and are as varied as the people who live and visit this city. From kindergarten, high school, and university students, to international web artists, to art and history professors, and yes ... the occasional “geek”. What we have found, through our museum, is that the the computer is a grand unifier of our culture. That the exclusive room sized machine can now fit in our pocket and is within reach of all. With this event we want to show our city and the world, that space exploration, science fiction, science, technology, and art are not that different, and within reach for all. And of course, that you don't have to be a “geek” to enjoy it. We have already done this on a smaller scale with PEEK@MOON. We can, and want to do it again with “2010”. So you may wonder, what does this event in Croatia have to do with the USA. With PEEK@MOON, we celebrated an event that changed humanity, an event that was wholly American, but belonged to the world. Similarly, with “2010” we will again celebrate those topics that are originally American, space exploration, science, technlogy, not to mention american performer T.C.O., american films Space Odyssey 2001, 2010. Last but not least, Croatian born inventor Tesla, whose residence in the USA proved to be his most productive. In essence, we are creating an event that celebrates the accomplishments, innovation, and the ideas of the USA, maybe not by waving the US flag, but by sharing some of the best of what the US has to offer. Date: Tue, 11 Aug 2009 22:43:04 -‐0400 To: Riba <riba@ml1.net> Hello Tomislav. PEEK&POKE looks like a great place, just the right audience for the Tesla Orchestra. Also, Croatia is a beautiful country that I would personally love to visit. We have several different shows, ranging from a one-‐person show with a 2-‐megavolt tesla coil and a performer in a high-‐voltage suit, to a complete theatrical performance involving dancers, live musicians, explosions, and video projection. Usually, we are willing to perform additional shows without increasing the price. For example we just did 2 shows (friday and saturday night) for a festival here in the USA, and we only charged for one show.
