several prestigious honors and
appointments, among which are:
2011-2012 Season Performances
2011-2012 has
been and
continues to be
a very busy
season for
performances of
Joelle Wallach's
music, especially
in New York,
Virginia and
Texas. Some
Fall highlights
included:
University of North Texas College of Music
1. She has been invited to become
Artistic Director of Voces Intimae,
a Dallas-based organization for
the performance of art songs
(www.vocesintimae.org/).
2. She has been nominated for the
2012 Pulitzer Prize in Music for
her Runes and Ritual by both the
Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts and New Music for Young
Ensembles.
3. She was named Music Advisor
to the Solendar Funds for Music of
the UJA-Federation.
4. She was appointed to the
Fellows Council of the Virginia
Center for the Creative Arts

Sunday,
September 11 - The Firefighters' Prayer for baritone and strings performed by Jeffrey Snider, Baritone and the Bancroft String Quartet
with Lauren Pierce, contrabass at the University of North Texas' 9/11
Commemoration Ceremony in Denton. The Prayer was also performed
that day by the Bach Vespers players and soloist Joseph Chappell at
Lincoln Center Firehouse in Manhattan.
Sunday, October 9 - Voices of Change performed Wallach's
A Revisitation of Myth for piano, viola and mezzo-soprano, Runes and
Ritual for piano quartet and Spiritual, based on the words of Langston
Hughes at Caruth Auditorium in the Owen Arts Center of Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
Sunday, October 16 - Toward a Time of Renewal for orchestra, chorus
& four solo voices was performed by The Old Dominion University
Concert Choir, Nancy Klein, Director at Old Dominion University
Orchestra, Lucy Manning, Director at Old Dominion University in Norfolk,
Virginia. It was repeated on Friday, October 21 by the same performers
at the National Conference of the College Music Society in Richmond,
VA.
5. She has been appointed to the
Advisory Board of New Music for
Young Ensembles.
Wednesday, October 26 - Runes and Ritual was featured in a UNT
faculty recital by Pamela Mia Paul, piano and Nikola Ruzevic, cello at the
College of Music, University of North Texas. Special guests were faculty
artists Felix Olschofka and Susan Dubois.

Saturday, October 29 - The Door Standing Open: Faculty Recital:
Vocal Music of Joelle Wallach - the program included 12 of her songs,
including Spiritual for mezzo soprano and piano, Epistolary, Close
Your Eyes and Making Love to the Milkman for soprano and piano,
The Cloths of Heaven, The Nightwatch, Assurance and BrokenFaced Gargoyles for tenor and piano, Let Evening Come for mezzo
and piano, The Door Standing Open for baritone and piano, two songs
from Meow Mix for soprano and piano, When Lost in the Forest (Stand
Still) and From the Almanac of Last Things for mezzo and soprano.
Joelle's Loveletter, Postmark
San Jose, a rhapsody for
euphonium and strings was
published by Just for Brass in
November 2011.
Newly expanded biographical
articles and entries by Sarah
Eyerly will be appearing in
the Grove Dictionary of
American Music, 2nd edition and

Thursday, November 16 - The New York Premiere of Lagrimas y
Locuras, Mapping the Mind of a Madwoman - A Lisztian look at La
Llorona, performed by pianist Margaret Mills at Manhattan's Church of
the Transformation. The piece was commissioned by Ana Cervantes and
the Monarca Project.
Sunday, December 11 - Lagrimas y Locuras was performed by pianist
Ana Cervantes at the Byron House and Museum in Marfil, Guanajuato,
Mexico.

New Vocal Work - World Premiere Concert for the Animals, a benefit
for the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund, performed by The Fairbanks
(Alaska) Choral Society at Pioneer Park Centennial Theater. In
cooperation with the Fairbanks Parks and Recreation Department.
Joelle Wallach is Visiting
Professor of Composition at the
University of North Texas College
of Music music.unt.edu/faculty-andstaff/detail/275. She composes
music for orchestra, chamber
ensembles, solo voices and
choruses. Her String Quartet
1995 was the American
Composers Alliance nominee for
the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
The New York Philharmonic
Ensembles premiered her octet,
From the Forest of Chimneys,
written to celebrate their 10th
anniversary; and the New York
Choral Society commissioned her
secular oratorio, Toward a Time
of Renewal, for 200 voices and
orchestra to commemorate their
35th Anniversary Season in
Carnegie Hall. Wallach's early
training in piano, voice, theory,
bassoon and violin included study
at the Juilliard Preparatory
Division. In 1984 the Manhattan
School of Music, where she
studied with John Corigliano,
granted her its first doctorate in
