A message from the Athletic Boosters
The Chantilly Athletic Boosters welcome all the visiting teams, players, coaches, and staff
to the 20th annual Pohanka Chantilly Basketball Classic. We are honored and grateful
for your participation in the longest currently running basketball tournament in Northern
Virginia. Additionally, we are proud to continue this fine tradition and hope you enjoy
your time here this week. Many local companies choose to sponsor and contribute
financial support in order to make these days of basketball possible. We cannot thank
them enough. I would like to call out and highlight some of our sponsors, in particular,
the Pohanka Auto Group, Crutchfield Orthodontics, Commonwealth Orthopedics, Jersey
Mike’s Subs, Cas & Sons, Modell’s, Longwood University, First Watch Restaurant, CiCi’s,
Ventera and The Washington Group.
The Athletic Boosters would like to highlight and give a gracious thank you to Chantilly
Principal Teresa Johnson, Director of Student Activities Terry Brown, and the entire
Booster Board for their dedication to making this a memorable event. Many long hours
have been dedicated in preparation for the tournament by countless volunteers, each
of whom deserve a great deal of appreciation and gratitude, and without whom this
tournament would not be possible. We would especially like to thank our tournament
director and girls varsity basketball coach, Kurt Sporkmann, boys basketball coach Jim
Smith, as well as every volunteer for taking their time to support this event.
All money raised at this tournament will benefit all the sports teams at Chantilly High
School. Each school year CHS fields 51 teams across all levels and sports. So all your
contributions go to financially supporting the fine student athletes here in our community.
Thanks again for coming to watch, enjoy your time with us, and we look forward to some
great competitive basketball.
Thanks again to all of our generous supporters!

A message from Teresa Johnson
A message from Jim LeMunyon
Welcome to Chantilly High School! It is with great pleasure
that we celebrate 20 years of the Pohanka Chantilly Classic
Basketball Tournament. It is our honor to once again host
such a great event that demonstrates the basketball skills
of high school students from around the state of Virginia.
Sports and extracurricular activities play a strong role in the
growth and development of our students as they strive to
show their competitive spirit in events such as the Classic.
Congratulations Pohanka Basketball Tournament athletes,
organizers, volunteers, and spectators on reaching a
20-year milestone! What an accomplishment! As one of
the longest-running winter basketball tournaments, the
Pohanka basketball tournament has provided fun and
sportsmanship to Northern Virginia for 20 years. Thank you
to everyone who makes this event such a success every
year - and here’s to 20 more years!
The Pohanka Chantilly Classic is an awesome three-day
event that is a staple to our community. It brings together
the school, the community and local businesses. I’d like to
take this opportunity to thank Pohanka Automotive Group
for sponsoring and supporting this tournament. Pohanka
has demonstrated generosity and support of this event
since it began 20 years ago. Thanks also to the parents,
fans, sponsors, officials and the many volunteers for their
time. Without their support, this event would not be
possible.

A message from Terry Brown
I would like to welcome you to Chantilly High School
and the 20th-annual Pohanka boys and girls basketball
tournament. Our tournament director, Kurt Sporkmann,
together with many of our booster board members, have
worked long and hard hours to make this tournament the
best that it can be. I hope you enjoy the games and the
holiday season. Good luck to all teams. Play hard.
Best regards,
Terry Brown
Director of Student Activities
A message from Pat Herrity
I would like to extend to you all a very warm welcome to
all the participants in the 20th Annual Pohanka Chantilly
Basketball Classic. Tipoff today marks a special milestone,
making the Pohanka Chantilly Basketball Classic the
longest running winter tournament in the region.
This event is a must-see in the Chantilly community and
one that brings together athletes, volunteers, parents, and
neighbors. It is a great end to the holiday season, and one
that is much anticipated every year. It is also important to
note and thank the Pohanka Automotive Group for helping
make this event possible. They have been a long-standing
supporter of the community and for 20 straight years they
have been a part of this event.
I would also like to acknowledge the hard work that you
have all put in getting here. To all of the players, I wish you
every success on the court; your commitment to competition
and fair play is a quality that will serve you well in this
tournament and future challenges as well. To all of the
coaches, as a youth sports coach myself, I understand
the important role sports have in the establishment of
character, discipline, and leadership in our youth — I
applaud your efforts and endeavors. To all of the spectators,
I hope that you enjoy watching our youth participate in
what will be a memorable weekend for all of us.
To recognize this special tournament Supervisor Frey and
I asked our colleagues on the Fairfax County Board of
Supervisors to declare Dec. 27, 2012, as Pohanka Chantilly
Basketball Classic Day in Fairfax County. Our motion was
unanimously approved. I look forward to watching a great
tournament with you all, and hope that you enjoy this
historic weekend.
Sincerely,
Pat Herrity
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors

the Pohanka
Chantilly Classic
Celebrating 20 Years of Competition
The Pohanka Chantilly Classic offers one of the most competitive and entertaining holiday basketball tournaments
in the D.C. Metropolitan area. In the 2012 edition, both host
teams will be vying to win the title against teams from
around the Metro D.C. area and the state.
The Chantilly boys team will feature an up tempo style of
play with sophomore guards Tyler Femi and Dylan Madawo,
and junior guard DeAndre Harris. The Chargers are looking
to reclaim the title won last year by Wilson, following Chantilly’s 2010 win over South County. In addition to Chantilly,
Wilson and South County will be Forest Park High School
from Woodbridge and the Robinson Rams of Fairfax. Robinson
is the defending Concorde District Champion. Another newcomer to the Pohanka Chantilly Classic is Patriot High School
from Nokesville. Mills Godwin, traditionally one of the Richmond area’s more successful programs, Wilson High School
from Washington, D.C. and Mountain View from Stafford return again this year and round out the boys field.
The girls tournament also features an exciting array of
teams, including Georgetown Visitation, who is traditionally
ranked by the Washington Post as one of the D.C. area’s best
teams and returns to defend its 2010 and 2011 championships. Langley, George Mason, Robinson, Mills Godwin and
Thomas Jefferson join the Chargers this year in welcoming
McLean back to the tournament.
The Chantilly girls road to the championship will be led
by senior Allison Rowe. Joining Allison in their bid for the
championship are juniors Kelsey Young and Alli Kemp and
Ina Feistenauer, a German exchange student this year at
Chantilly. The Chargers youth movement continues with an
array of sophomores and freshmen looking to make impact in
the tournament. Challenging the Chargers this year will be
returning champions Georgetown Visitation along with Mills
Godwin, Thomas Jefferson, McLean, George Mason and Langley. All play an exciting brand of basketball that could make
this season’s tournament the best in the Pohanka Chantilly
Classic history.
The Pohanka Chantilly Classic, a vision of Rita Deeb and
Wayne Van Oster, has been a staple in the Chantilly community for 20 years. Created in 1993 as a three-day boys
basketball tournament, the Pohanka has grown into a threeday basketball extravaganza, highlighting some of the best
competition throughout the Northern Region, the Washington
D.C. area and the country. All proceeds benefit the Chantilly
Athletic Boosters, boys and girls basketball and all Chantilly
athletic programs.
BOYS HISTORY
Both sides of the tournament have created spirited rivalries
with numerous rematch title games. For the first three years
Chantilly’s boys went toe-to-toe with Robert E. Lee High
School for the championship, with the Lancers winning the
6
first two. The Chargers then won three straight, including the
most lopsided championship in tournament history, a 105-52
trouncing of Phelps.
The Chargers have had some tough finales including consecutive two-point overtime championship game losses to
Hayfield in 2002 and 2003. In 2007 the Chargers returned
to championship level, ending a five-year drought with a
94-86 decision over Landon. Head coach Jim Smith and the
Chargers have won eight titles, the most recent in 2010. 1997
Chantilly graduate Derek Franklin is the only player to win
the MVP twice (96-97).
GIRLS HISTORY
The girls bracket started in 1995, two years later than the
boys, but has created quite a buzz, especially in the new millennium.
For the first six years of competition the tournament fielded only four teams on the girls side, but still offered plenty of
memorable moments. Like their male counterparts, the Lady
Chargers also got off to a relatively slow start, losing the first
two title games to Fairfax. The Rebels had three consecutive
titles, the last against Centreville in 1997, before Chantilly
won its first championship in 1998. Since then the Chargers
have won six of the last 10 championships.
Since 2001 Chantilly has faced Georgetown Visitation in
the championship six times. The head to head record is 3-3
between these two teams, with Georgetown Visitation winning the most recent battle. The last Chantilly victory and
championship came in 2007 on the shoulders of graduate
Melissa Furr.
The Chargers have also produced the most prolific scorer,
male or female in the tournament. Alena Koshansky (’02)
scored 107 points in three games in 2001 and her three
individual efforts (38, 36, 33) that year still rank as the top
single-game highs in the history of the girls tournament. Koshansky (’02) shares the honor of two-time MVP with Melissa
Furr (’07).
SPECIAL THANKS
The Chantilly Athletic Boosters and organizers of the
20th-annual Pohanka Chantilly Classic would like to extend
a congratulations and a special thank you to Wayne Van
Oster and Rita Deeb, without whom the vision of this tournament would not be possible. It was their tireless effort of 14
years that created the partnership between Chantilly High
School and Pohanka Automotive Group and inspired us to
continue with their tradition. Together, they have established
the Classic as one of the longest-running tournaments in the
Northern Virginia area. Again this year the Boosters would
like to especially thank long-time contributors and original
volunteers Paul Norris and Marshall Dantzler as they continue
their streak of 20 straight years as volunteers and supporters
of the tournament and Chantilly athletics.
