St. Leonard is a Jubilee of Mercy Church We are grateful to our Archbishop Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, OFMCAP, for making our Parish Church of St. Leonard a Jubilee Church, a privilege ordinarily granted to cathedral churches. To the best of my knowledge our church is the only one in the whole Archiocese of Boston, besides the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, that has received this honor. The Holy Door at St. Leonard’s will be opened this coming Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 pm when we will receive a major relic of St. Pio of Pietrelcina brought to Boston by our Capuchin Brothers of the Shrine of San Giovanni Rotondo, where the body of St. Pio is permanently exposed for veneration by its devotees who, by the millions, visit that beautiful shrine every year. The relic will remain at St. Leonard’s until midnight of the same day. Please join us and do not miss this unique occasion. If you cannot make the 7:00 pm Mass, presumably to be celebrated by Cardinal Sean, come any time until midnight. Our church will remain a Jubilee Church until the closing of the Holy Year of Mercy that occurs on November 20th, the solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Until then we can obtain a plenary indulgence every time we enter the Church and fulfill the required conditions that consist of going to confession (at least once), receiving Holy Communion, reciting the creed, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. We believe that most of us will take advantage of this rare opportunity. Saint Padre Pio Relic Tour “This is the first time any major relic of Padre Pio has left Italy, and we are so pleased that they have offered to come to Boston for this historic visit. We know that many people throughout our country have a great devotion to Padre Pio, so the friars have made this possible especially for those who are not able to travel to San Giovanni Rotondo in Italy to venerate his relics and pray for his intercession,” (Cardinal Sean). The relic will be in the Boston area from September 21-23, which will be the only stop during this trip. According to a schedule released by the Archdiocese of Boston, the locations where the public may view the relic are: Wednesday, September 21 9am-5pm at Immaculate Conception, Lowell-Veneration will be held throughout the day with Mass at noon. 7pm-midnight at St. Leonard Church, North End of Boston. Mass will be celebrated at 7pm followed by veneration until midnight. Thursday, September 22 9am-5pm at the Archdiocese of Boston Pastoral Center, Braintree. Veneration will be held throughout the day with Mass at noon. 7pm-midnight at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston. Spanish Mass will be celebrated at 7pm, followed by veneration until midnight. Friday, September 23 - The Feast of Saint Padre Pio 9am-midnight at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston. Mass will be celebrated at 9am followed by veneration throughout the day. Cardinal O’Malley will also celebrate Mass at 7pm followed by veneration until midnight. This weekend’s second collections support the retirement, medical, and financial needs of priests of the Archdiocese of Boston. These priests have given their lives to faithfully service Christ, the Church, and you. Please be generous to this important collection. For more information, please visit www.clercyfunds.org. For parishioners and visitors to St. Leonard Church, a Kiosk is now available for those who find it more convenient to use a credit or debit card instead of cash or check for the offertory and/or other donations. The theme this year is “Prayer: The Faith Prayed.” The letter of Timothy fits nicely. He asks, “… that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life.” Very good advice especially these days which are far from quiet and tranquil. Timothy continues by reminding us that, “God our savior … wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” Today, pray in thanksgiving for the many catechists and faith formation leaders and volunteers who help adults and children “come to the knowledge of the truth.” Pray, also, that your daily life will be a school of discipleship.
