Help My Unbelief
Just after His Transfiguration, Jesus encountered a man whose son was suffering terribly (see Mark
9:14-29). He came down from the mountain and found His disciples arguing about how to help the
boy. The father is desperate to see his son healed, and he brings the boy to Jesus as his last hope. The
disciples are not sure what to do. They do not know how to handle the boy or his father. The father
begs Jesus to heal his son, and Jesus tells him it can happen if the father believes in Him. The father
cries out, “I believe, but help my unbelief!” Can you imagine the father’s desperation? Can you understand how he could both believe and disbelieve– at the same time? The father is expressing something that all of us feel at times in our lives
of discipleship. There are times when we are unsure and do not understand what God’s will is. We
all walk through seasons of doubt and confusion. There are inexplicable tragedies that shake us and
cause us fear. The father in the story believes in Jesus, yet he had seen his young son suffer so much. Surely he had so many conflicting thoughts and emotions about why his son suffers so. His faith has
been shaken: he believes, yet he has doubts. Who doesn’t? We are all shaken by watching young children suffer. There are things we cannot explain
in our world, yet we still believe in a good and loving God despite suffering and evil. God promises
us that His care for us is stronger than anything that can afflict us, and that nothing can separate us
from His love. That love is available to us through Christ, and if we look at His life, we see the prime
example of someone suffering while innocent. Even on the cross, quoting Psalm 22, Jesus expressed
His belief and anguish at the same time when He cried out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?” He claims the Father as His God, yet He acknowledges His feelings of abandonment at the same
time. If you are in a season of doubt and worry right now – take heart and believe. And even if you have
unbelief mixed in with your faith, do not fear that God will leave you because your faith is flawed. He
promises to stay with you through each season of life – even your times of doubt and confusion. May
God help all of us in our “unbelief.” Grace, mercy, and peace,

Theresa Heist and Charlie
Theresa Gernand Heist is the wife of GPC member Peter Heist. She and
her son Charlie relocated to Germantown from Chicago in May. Theresa is a graduate of Bethel University and is a sales director for Elsevier.
Charlie just celebrated his 5th birthday and will soon be a kindergartener

Kelly, Thomas, and Catherine Lackey
The Lackeys moved to the area from Greenwood, South Carolina
when Thomas joined Smith & Nephew as a medical device engineer.
The Lackeys, who will soon celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary,
are the parents of Catherine who is a 4th-grader at Olive Branch Intermediate School. Kelly has worked as a Mary Kay consultant since
2001 and enjoys playing the piano and reading in her leisure time.
For Thomas, interests include racing, which takes the checkered flag,
with golf in second place. Catherine enjoys swimming, singing, and
playing the piano. The Lackeys live at 8265 Kings Crossing Drive

Pamela Palmer
Pam moved to the Memphis area in 1973 after completing her Bachelor’s degree at Ole Miss and her Master’s degree at LSU. While she
was on the faculty at the University of Memphis, she completed her
doctorate. Following her retirement from the U of M, she established
Tutoring for Success and now provides tutoring in Math, English,
AP European history, reading, writing, and ACT and other standardized test preparation. Pam resides at 1361 Poplar Estates Parkway in
Germantown with “woman’s best friend” Taylor Wooster, a shih tzuMaltese. Her telephone number and email address are: 901-737-7442

Mary Alice Turner
Mary Alice was born in Memphis and raised at Buntyn Presbyterian
Church. She is a retired educator. Mary Alice received her B.S. in
Elementary Education from the University of Memphis, her M.S.
in Special Education from Texas A&M and completed graduate
work in Public School Administration at University of North Texas
at Denton. After she retired from public education in Richardson,
Texas, she returned to her hometown. Mary Alice enjoys traveling,
reading, writing, gardening, and the arts. She employs her love of
reading and writing to provide tutoring through Literacy Mid-South.

New Fall Sunday Classes
There is an incredible heritage of strong adult education at Germantown Presbyterian Church. Your Adult Education
Team has been working tirelessly these past few months to continue that tradition in the slate of new classes set to begin
this month. We’d like to thank all who have stepped forward to be teachers this fall!
Spiritual formation and discipleship are such important aspects of our walks as Christians. Without stretching and learning, our faith can easily turn stale—or even boring. The book of Hebrews offers some powerful words here: “Indeed, the
word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from
marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).
Our hope is that you would all be eager to enter into this process of spiritual formation and discipleship, even when it
challenges you. We are very excited about all the classes we are offering this fall, and we hope you will join one each Sunday
morning.

In the Image of God

“In the image of God he created them” (Genesis 1:27). Such a simple statement with powerful implications! Saying we
are made in God’s image at once bestows dignity upon every person and conviction upon how we should live. How are we
like God? How are we not? This 8-week class will explore this challenging theological topic.

Prayer is a relationship with God. It is personal, public, corporate, and universal. It expresses hope, compassion, anger,
and tears. It asks for forgiveness, pleads for guidance, and struggles with a world in need. Prayer is for sinners, disciples,
the lost, and the found. It is for the weak, the proud, the enemy, and the friend. It is to be cherished, nurtured, and
shared. It looks inward to the one who whispers, upward to the God who hears, and outward to the community it serves. In other words, prayer is each person’s personal relationship with God.

Living Whole: Healthy in Body and Soul
Teachers: Will Jones, Amy Morse
Dates: Aug 27—Oct 13 (8 weeks)
The Christian tradition has always affirmed the connection between the body and
soul – that both are part of our humanity as created by God. This class will examine the unity
of the human person and how our physical health and spiritual health are linked together in
our relationship with God. We will rely on the wisdom of two books: God, Faith, and Health:
Exploring the Spirituality-Healing Connection by Jeff Levin and Health through Faith and Community by James Ellor. Participants in this class will engage in certain spiritual disciplines
during our time together in and out of class, including aspects of prayer, diet, exercise, and
meditation. We will discover how a healthy spirit and healthy body work together to foster
healthy relationships, sound decisions, and mature faith in all walks of life.
The Book of Job
Teachers: Martha Drexler, Beth Carter, Mark Cooper
Dates: Oct 27—Dec 15 (8 weeks)
Using various resources this class will explore the book of Job. Is this a book about
suffering or a book about faith? Why did John Calvin construct 159 of his 700 sermons
centered on the book of Job? What are some of the modern works of fiction that reflect some of the themes
of Job? Come explore and take a fresh look with us at the book of Job.
Into All the World
Teachers: Stephanie Wall, Susan Bingham
Dates: Oct 27—Dec 15 (8 weeks)
As Presbyterians, we are people of faith who seek understanding through reformed theological perspectives. This
course centers on the mission of God, recognizing how God’s people can live out God’s work in the world. We will explore
understanding God’s plan, connecting with God’s strategy, learning from the global church, and embracing our missional vocation. As Christ was sent on our behalf, we who have accepted Christ are sent on behalf of Christ to others in the
world. The text for the class is Into All the World – Participating in God’s Mission by Donald J. Dawson and Jennifer A. Haddox.
The Old Testament from Scratch
Teachers: Jay Howell, Bo Hormberg, Susan Morgan, Mickie Nabers
Dates: Aug 27—Dec 15 (16 weeks)
Do you ever feel intimidated by that big group of books called the Old Testament? Don’t even know where to
start? Then this class is for you! Using Donald Griggs’ Old Testament from Scratch and a sampling of pivotal OT passages,
we’ll spend 16 weeks walking through the broad strokes of how the Old Testament weaves a rich understanding of God’s
relationship to His people Israel and sets a powerful stage for the coming of Jesus Christ. No prior knowledge needed.
Young Adults Bible Study
Leaders: Lauren Beaupre, Myles Beaupre, Sally Fienup
Dates: Every Sunday
The Young Adults Sunday School Class meets Sundays at 9:45 AM in the church library. Young adults and college students are all invited to attend. Together, we explore God’s Word through discussion and build relationships with one
another.
Paula’s Hearts and Hands
Leaders: Elizabeth Boyd, Elaine Cates
Dates: Every Sunday
This class is named in memory of one of its founding members, Paula Heist. Class members are dedicated to making
knitted items to be distributed to those in need. (However, you don’t have to knit to attend.) Various Bible studies, books,
dvd series, and other study tools are used to promote exploration and discussion that will lead to a deeper spiritual relationship with God. Intercessory prayer is also an important element of this class.

Each month one of GPC’s staff members will provide a review of a book that means something to them,
either personally or professionally.
Adventures in Prayer
Catherine Marshall
Ms. Marshall opens her book on prayer in this way: “I believe that the old cliché, ‘God helps those
who help themselves,’ is not only misleading but often dead wrong. My most spectacular answers
to prayers have come when I was so helpless, so out of control as to be able to do nothing at all for
myself.”
In this amazing book, Catherine Marshall shares her personal discoveries about how surprisingly
down-to-earth God wants our prayers to be. The book contains eight chapters, each one dedicated
to a kind of prayer: 1) prayer is asking; 2) the prayer of helplessness; 3) the prayer that helps your
dreams come true; 4) the waiting prayer; 5) the prayer of relinquishment; 6) the prayer in secret; 7) the prayer of
joyous blessing; and 8) the claiming prayer. She closes each chapter with a practical, intimate prayer to Jesus. To
this day, I remember one of my most amazing life experiences resulted in the offering up of a prayer in secret.
Books abound on the subject of prayer. This book is full of Spirit-driven insight as a result of Marshall’s own
experience with the Lord, and I can’t say I’ve read anything more practical and helpful in guiding me into a deeper,
more fulfilling communion with God.

Home Runs for Hunger

Bottled Water Needed!
The Memphis Redbirds have hit a total of 45 homeruns at home through
July 21. There are of 17 home games left on their schedule. Last year they
hit a total of 60 homeruns - let’s hope they hit even
more during this finishing stretch. Again, thank
all of you that have pledged to help the hungry.
There’s still plenty of time left to participate in
helping the hungry in the Midsouth. You can
pledge 5 cents to $500 or more; you can sign up for
one game or all of them. If you have any questions
about this project for helping the hungry or want
to sign up, please contact Warren Crain (wbcrain@
aol.com or 901-755-2106). When the season is finished, Warren will let everyone know the total number of homeruns and the grand total of money
raised to support feeding the hungry in our community. In anticipation of

September 9 - Proof of Heaven by Dr. Eben Alexander
A highly trained neurosurgeon, Dr. Alexander knew that near-death experiences feel real but are simply fantasies produced by brains under
extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness, and for seven days he lay in a coma. Suddenly, he woke up. Before his coma, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor
who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal
existence but only a transition. Join the group to read about this inspiring story. Barbara Craft will facilitate the discussion. Sylvia Foster

October 14 - Pursued: God’s Divine Obsession with You by Jud Wilhite
The author’s message brings the story of Hosea and Gomer to life. “Christian faith isn’t blind obedience to a set of rules and regulations;
it is entering into a relationship with a God who pursues us – not to punish but to love.” This book compellingly illustrates God’s plan for
every person – to be freed to become his or her own unique self through intimate togetherness with the living, loving God. Sylvia Foster will
facilitate the discussion.
November 11 - Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou (tentative selection)
“The story of Maya Angelou’s extraordinary life has been chronicled in her multiple bestselling autobiographies. Now, at last, the legendary
author shares the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother.... Delving into one of her life’s most rich, rewarding,
and fraught relationships, Mom & Me & Mom explores the healing and love that evolved between the two women over the course of their
lives, the love that fostered Maya Angelou’s rise from immeasurable depths to reach impossible heights.” Tentatively Judith Wilson will facilitate the discussion.
December 9- Y ou Can’t Do EVERYthing ... So Do SOMEthing: Small Ways to Change the World by Shane Stanford
Shane Stanford says: “The real need for our world is not that we do every part; it’s that we just do our part. And working together to do
that something God calls us to do – all of us working together – we will transform this world.” Barb Poier will facilitate the discussion. The
tentative plan is to follow the discussion with a Christmas lunch at Amerigo’s.

ong Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela by Nelson Mandela
“In classically elegant and engrossing prose, Mandela tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg, of
his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He
describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the
painful separations from his children. He brings vividly to life the escalating political warfare in the fifties between the ANC and the government, culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964, at which he was sentenced
to life imprisonment. He recounts the surprisingly eventful twenty-seven years in prison and the complex, delicate negotiations that led
both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the ultimate inside account.” Alinda Fahrenkopf will
facilitate the discussion.

have a very special speaker, so bring a neighbor and friend! Sally Aldrich, administrator, CNO – Methodist Home Care
Hospice and Palliative Services will speak to us. She is the sister of Linda Harris and was very instrumental in the opening of the Methodist Hospice facility on Quince. Circle # 3 (Amy Phillips) will provide us with a delicious salad lunch and
dessert. Please come and enjoy the fellowship.
PW SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:
Prayerfully consider being involved in one of these wonderful ministries:
• Project Outreach – The requested food for August is canned fruit and
fruit juices. The need is great; the collection bin is in the AC.
• Threads of Love will resume meeting in September, but walker bags,
heart pillows, and catheter covers are available in the office. We made several
pillowcase dresses which were taken to Mexico on the recent mission trip.
• Johnson Auxiliary (The Med) continues to collect eyeglasses, magazines, underwear, socks, robes,
etc. The collection bin is in the AC.
• Martha’s Manor is a day facility for mentally challenged women. Please help collect travel-size shampoo,
conditioner, lotion, soap, etc. These make great Bingo prizes for the ladies. We help each Thursday with reading,
singing, exercise, and Bingo from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Also on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, we help with
stitching/crafts (rug hook, quilting, making hot pads, threading needles, etc.). We look forward to starting back
in September.

August is such a fascinating time in Youth Ministry. This month we are placed squarely between looking back at everything
that happened this summer (is it gone already?) while preparing for what God has placed in front of us with the new school
year.
This summer was amazing (see below for photographic evidence). Our middle school students once again went to the Great
Escape outside of Chattanooga where we got wet, messy, and well fed. We also got the opportunity to be led into worship
with an awesome band while a team of speakers told us all about how God’s love continues to reach out to us, no matter what
life throws at us. Part of the response to this amazing love was our group deciding to support a student in South Africa as
he learns about leadership and Jesus through Ubuntu Sports Academies. God truly is an awesome God.
Our high school students did things a little differently than we have in the past. Our students traveled to Long Island, New
York do work with the community of Long Beach as they continue to rebuild from the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy.
We spent 4 days working hard to repair and rebuild homes alongside groups from as far away as San Francisco, only to come
back each night and hear about the journey Jesus calls us to: one of knowing Him (rather than knowing about Him) and
serving others in His name. It was a week that several students described as life-changing.
This upcoming school year will bring exciting change as well. In order to better serve families, our Youth Ministry Support
Team has recommended that we experiment with a new structure for Sunday Night Fellowship this semester. Our Junior
High and Senior High groups will meet simultaneously at the church at 4 PM on Sundays for a time of snacks, games
and fellowship. After this we will split up, with one group going into small groups led by our amazing adult leaders and
the other group spending time in large group discussions (these groups will switch the following week). This means that
Sunday Night Fellowship next semester will run from 4 PM to 6 PM for grades 6-12, though they will meet separately.
The hope is that this structure will better provide students space to build meaningful relationships with our adult leaders
and one another as we seek to know Jesus better, allow us enough flexibility to try new things, and lessen the traveling and
food burdens on families. We will try this out until December, and we ask that you all join us in praying that whatever we do
glorifies God and draws students closer to Jesus. We also ask for your flexibility as trying a new structure will involve some
growing pains, especially at the beginning. For more information, please come to our August parent meeting on Sunday,
August 18, at 4 PM.
And as we prepare for what Jesus has in store for us in the upcoming school year (check out our Events Calendar on the next
page), we can’t help but look back on this summer as an Ebenezer representing the work that He has done in our hearts and
minds. May He be forever glorified as we seek to know Him better in all that we do. Amen.

• Trace Bundy Fall Kick-Off Concert – Saturday, August 10 @ 7:30 PM: GPC is kicking off the school year in
STYLE with a concert featuring Trace Bundy. See the back cover for more info!
• Leader Training – Sunday, August 11 @ 9:30 AM: If you’re working with our youth this upcoming school year,
please join us in the youth wing as we go over our vision for the ministry and our expectations for you. If you cannot
be there, please connect with Adam.
• Incoming Freshman Milestone Day – Friday, August 16 @ 9 PM - 7 AM: You’re in high school now and that’s
great. To celebrate this momentous transition we are having a LOCK-IN here at GPC on Friday night, August 16.
This is open to all high school students, but it’s going to be ALL ABOUT our new freshmen. Anyone interested,
contact Adam for release forms and all the details.
• Parent Meeting – Sunday, Aug 18 @ 4 PM: If you have a student in the ministry, or if you’re interested in hearing
more about what we’re up to, please come to this meeting. We will hand out calendars, introduce some key people,
explain the mission behind the ministry, and offer some time for you to ask questions.
• Incoming 6th Grader Milestone Day – Sunday, August 25 @ 4 PM: Are you joining the youth ministry for the first
time this year? We’re SO EXCITED to have you! Join us on Sunday, August 25 as we all meet for the first time this
semester for a special event focused on welcoming new 6th grade students into the Youth Ministry (prepare to get wet
and dirty!).
Germantown Festival Parking Lot Fundraiser – Water Bottles Needed
In order to help us raise money for our summer trips we sell parking spots at GPC for the Germantown Festival, September
7 and 8. We try to give everyone who parks in our parking lot a bottle of water with information about GPC attached. If you
would like to donate some bottled water for this endeavor, we will start collecting later this month.

Music dates to remember and look forward to in August 2013!
Sunday August 4, 2013 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM worship services
***We are excited to have as our guest in worship The Four Hornsmen of the
Apocalypse, a French horn quartet that has captivated and excited audiences with
astonishing musicianship and technique for over fifteen years. July 29 – August
3 The Hornsmen performed as contributing artists at the 45th International Horn
Symposium held at the University of Memphis. They pride themselves on their
ability to connect with the audience and break the traditional barrier between
musician and listener. Over the years, The Hornsmen (yes they are aware there
is a lady among them) have performed throughout the United States for audiences at symphonies, college campuses, horn
workshops, churches, arts festivals, public schools, parking lots, hotel lobbies, interstate rest areas, etc., etc. Most recently,
they completed a tour of Texas and a residency with Symphony Orchestra Augusta in addition to recording and releasing a
CD, entitled “Intuitions.” At the conclusion of the 11:00 AM service, the Hornsmen will perform a 15 minute mini concert
for those interested in getting a taste of their concert style.

***For some years now it has been our tradition at GPC, on the first Sunday after school resumes in the fall, to have the
women of the church lead our congregation in worship through music. On August 11 we will have a Ladies Ensemble sing
at both services and a Women’s Choir comprised of women from the Chancel Choir and women from the congregation
sing at the 11:00 AM worship service. ALL women, all ages are welcome. We love to have mother/daughter/grandmother/
sister combinations. Youth are strongly encouraged to sing. The music will not be difficult. You will enjoy the rehearsal
and leading our congregation in worship. Meet in the choir room at 9:50 AM and rehearsal will begin at 10:00. WE NEED
YOU! Come and help us make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO JOIN THE CHANCEL CHOIR
Chancel Choir resumes singing for Sunday worship on August 18. We will rehearse in the choir room
at 10:20 AM on Sunday August 18, Sunday August 25, and Sunday September 1. We will begin regular
Wednesday rehearsals on Wednesday, September 4 in the choir room at 7:15 PM. Many people in our
congregation have expressed interest in joining the choir – now is that time. All are welcome – former
choir singers from high school, college, community choirs or other churches are strongly encouraged
to join. Current high school students who sing in school choirs are more than welcome. We will work
with you regarding your school schedule because we understand that studies must come first. Now is the time for you to
join the Chancel Choir. Speak to Dr. Teachey or simply show up for rehearsal…you will find a warm, welcoming group of
people who love to sing and enjoy the process of preparation.
