CENTRAL SPEAKS Parade of Homes This Weekend April 23, 2015 • Daily News at CentralSpeaks.com Movie in the park postponed due to weather Four Central Homes Included in Tour Capital Region Builders Association (CRBA) will hold its annual 2015 Parade of Homes with 40 new homes on tour throughout the area during the two weekends of April 25-26 and May 2-3. The tour is free and open to the public with homes open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A listing of homes on tour are available at www. crbaparade.com as well as instructions for downloading a mobile phone app that includes descriptions, drawings and driving directions for each of the homes. “This year’s Parade of Homes showcases new homes of all sizes and architectural styles. We know visitors will be keenly interested in the vast array of new products and design ideas,” said CRBA President Robert Carroll. “We encourage the community to tour the homes and to talk with the builders about the homes’ features during the free parade.” Some of the homes feature outdoor kitchens, pools, and home theatres. This year’s parade includes 40 homes, built by 28 builders in 31 subdivisions, including 14 homes in Ascension, 22 in East Baton Rouge, and 4 in Livingston Parish. The homes range in price from $169,900 to $1,200,000. “Now is a great time to purchase a new home,” stated Lynda Evans, CRBA Executive Vice President. “Interest rates are low and financing is more readily available. The energy efficiency that comes with the new appliances, windows, heating and cooling units to name a few can actually put you in a new home with monthly payments less than what rental units are going for.” For more information on the 2015 Parade of Homes, call 225-769-7696 or visit www.crbaparade.com. Three local builders are participating in the Tour of Homes. Gafford Builders, Inc. is showing a home at 7443 N. Eisworth Ave. in the Village at Magnolia Square. Patterson Homes, LLC is showing a home at 15825 Greystone Ave. in Twin Lakes. Rabalais Homes, LLC is showing a home at 13350 Magnolia Square and a home at 13355 La Petite Lane, both in the Village at Magnolia Square. Stop by to see these beautiful homes. Here are ten reasons to ride or make a pledge in support of this great cause. 1) St. Jude Children’s Hospital exists solely to prevent and cure pediatric catastrophic diseases; it’s for our children. 2) Many here in Central know one of the Central children who have been treated at St. Jude. 3) Since opening in 1962, treatments invented at St. Jude have pushed the childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to over 80 percent. 4) Central’s Chuck Langlois has faithfully put on the Central St. Jude Bike-athon every year since 1984. This is year 32. 5) Families NEVER receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, and food. 6) It is worth coming out to the BikeA-Thon just to watch the excitement of the children starting the race, most unaware of the mission or impact of St. Jude, but some who are currently undergoing treatment through St. Jude for a life-threatening childhood disease. 7) St. Jude is the only National Cancer Institute dedicated solely to the treatment of children and has more than 67,000 patient visits each year 8) The Bike-A-Thon is a great Central social event. It is worth the short trip to Magnolia Square on Lovett Road just to visit with friends and watch the event. 9) St. Jude has helped increase the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from 4% before opening in 1962 to 94% today. 10) Because if a few dollars, or a few minutes, or a few laps around the track on your bike help make a lifetime of difference for even one child, it is time and effort well spent Take the next two weeks to get pledges and come out Saturday May 9th and ride, or find a rider and make a pledge. Entry forms are available at Sullivan Hardware, you can sign up at the event itself, or Chuck Langlois can deliver forms to you. For more information call us at Central Speaks at 262-3730 or Chuck Langlois at 603-6100. Helping children is Good News for a Great City. CONTACT Central SpeakS 13513 Hooper Road P.O. Free Skin Cancer Screening From Lane RMC A free skin cancer screening sponsored by Lane Regional Medical Center and Advanced Dermatology will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the office of Laurie Harrington, MD, and Jennifer Burk Henderson, PAC, located at 20474 Old Scenic Highway in Zachary. The screening coincides with Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, and is part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in this country. “The key to the successful treatment of most types of cancer is early detection and treatment,” said Dr. Harrington. “With skin cancer, early detection is easy because the signs are visible on the surface of the skin.” Advanced Dermatology and Lane Regional Medical Center invite the public to take advantage of this free screening. Registration is required and space is limited. For more information or to register for the screening call (225) 658-4587. Sales tax revenues, excluding motor vehicle sales taxes, within the city totaled $393,052.01 for the month of February 2015. For the current fiscal year starting July 1, 2014 thru February 28, 2015, sales tax revenues are up 7.45% compared to the same period in the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Motor vehicle sales tax revenues are also up by 14.54%. This represents twenty straight months of sales tax increases for the city. The increase in sales taxes can be contributed to more citizens shopping locally as well as better reporting and auditing controls by the City-Parish, which collects sales taxes for all areas of the parish. However, some businesses are not reporting their sales taxes timely. As a result, the city of Central is working with the CityParish to identify those businesses not reporting sales taxes or failing to submit sales taxes in a timely manner. Additionally, some businesses are being audited to ensure that the sales taxes submitted are correct. 4 COMMUNITY CENTRAL COMMUNITY CALENDAR THURSDAY 4/23: CCSS Spring Break Central Speaks Hits the Streets Artist’s Paint-In/Crafts Work Room at Magnolia UMC, 1-5PM CHS JV Baseball vs Live Oak, Home, 4PM Sports Central Radio Show, 910 AM & Live from Coaches Grill, 5PM Board of Adjustments Meeting, Kristenwood, 5PM Planning and Zoning Meeting, Kristenwood, 6PM Live Music with Jordan Anderson, Caliente, 6-9PM CHS Varsity Baseball vs Live Oak, Home, 6:30PM FRIDAY 4/24: CCSS Spring Break Artist’s Paint-In/Crafts Work Room at Magnolia UMC, 9AM-12PM SATURDAY 4/25: Magnolia UMC Community Market, 8AM Team Olivia Day, Central Square, 12-6PM (See page 1) Dinner Theater Fundraiser, Foster Rd Baptist Church, 6-8PM See you at church! SUNDAY 5/3: Thursday, April 23, 2015 • CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition CAPA Corner: Unclear on What is Unclean “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing;…” There are some in the Church today who are unclear on what is unclean. Our young people, as well as adults, are faced with many shades of gray regarding God’s will, biblical truth, and what is right and wrong. The Bible is very clear on what is clean and holy as well as what is unclean and sinful. So why the lack of clarity? This is done by man redefining Christianity, church, and whatever else God has ordained in order to fit man’s lifestyle and still give a sense of being saved. This is the work of the Devil; making the word of God vague and obscure, questionable and unclear. From the beginning, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world, questioned the word of God when he said to Eve, “Yea, hath God said,..”. It was very clear that Adam and Eve were not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but the Devil came along with his subtlety and made it unclear by appealing to Eve’s flesh; clouding righteous judgment. As long as we remain unclear on what is unclean this will leave us wide open to the subtleties of Satan which will lead to the satisfying of fleshly desires. God has made it very clear in his word, “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” (I Thes. 4:7). If you desire clarity regarding God’s call unto holiness, then get into God’s word, stay in God’s word, apply his word to your life and he will clear things right up. I pray blessings and God’s grace upon the body of Christ. May our heavenly Father bring clarity on what is unclean that we may not live any longer therein and clarity on what is holy that we may heed his call in the name of Jesus, by the power of his Holy Spirit. CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition • Thursday, April 23, 2015 The Central Chamber Report Chamber Member of the Year – AA Mini Storage On Thursday February 26th we held the 5th annual Central Chamber Awards Banquet. The evening was eventful and memorable. We are currently printing a series of articles in which we will highlight the award winners of the various categories. This week we are highlighting The Chamber Member of the Year – AA Mini Storage – The Leaders. There are four criteria that the Chamber considers when choosing a business for an award. They are as follows: has the business made an impact on the vitality and economic strength of the City of Central, shown generosity to our community, provided leadership within the community and displayed innovative thinking and entrepreneurship? Some businesses will have one of these criteria and some may even have a couple of them. However, every so often you find a business that displays all of the criteria. Over the years, the Leaders have done all of these points over and over again. Since the 70’s the Leaders have continued to evolve to meet the changing times, have expanded real estate holdings and contributed to the economic growth of our community. AA Mini Storage has been a member of the Chamber from the day it began and has helped in its growth and development. The Leaders are continually serving the community and the Chamber by volunteering their time, expertise, and financial support. Time does not permit the listing of all that the Leaders have done to help our city and our commerce community! It is an honor and a privilege to declare AA Mini Storage the winner of the 2014 Chamber Member of the Year Award! Congratulations to AA Mini Storage, the Leaders! COMMUNITY 5 The Crowning Moment Goes Active for Autism! Submitted by Erin Husbands The Crowning Moment queens from all around Louisiana came to participate in the Families Helping Families of GBR in the annual Active for Autism 5K. Attendees and the beauty queens shined in the rain to help raise awareness for autism. The local beauty queens made posters to cheer on the runners along the route, took pictures with participants, provided entertainment, and even lead the one mile walk for autism. Even President and Founder of the Avoyelles Autism Network, Amanda Reed, traveled in from Moureauville, LA for the event. The Crowning Moment offers youth mentoring and pageant coaching to girls across the Gulf Coast. Girls and their families spend time not only on the stage, but participating in community events, working with charities, and showing first hand that it’s more important to wear their crowns on their hearts by serving others. Especially my youngest, he has a lot of sensory issues." Randi says the Wings for Autism program was "a great trial run for us so we are going on vacation and we're going to fly." The Youth Riders are a precision drill team that performs an impressive flag presentation and drill performance on horses. By invitation, the Youth Riders perform at rodeos, parades, and other equestrian events in Louisiana and throughout the south. This family oriented organization was established 57 years ago as a Boy Scout troop. They soon allowed girls and became the Greenwell Springs Youth Riders. It has evolved into an outstanding group of youths between the ages of eight and eighteen. This non-profit group promotes horsemanship, teamwork, and a sense of value to hundreds of kids. The success and longevity of this team is contributed to the dedication of the parents, support of the community, and a child’s love of riding a horse. The annual rodeo is the group’s only fundraiser. It provides equipment and tack for the members as well as senior scholarships. Each year, the riders choose to give back to the community. This year, they will be donating to “Olivia Grace’s Hope For A Cure,” a precious little girl who is fighting Batten Disease and has touched the hearts of these riders. The Greenwell Springs Youth Riders Rodeo starts at 8pm each night, Friday May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd. Tickets are $10 Adults; $5 Students to age 17; and free for ages 5 and under. Pre Rodeo events include Mutton Busting (kids 6 yrs and under riding sheep) and Needle in the Haystack. Kids ages 6 and under & ages 7 to 12 can try to win a bicycle in the Calf Scramble. For more information check out their website, gsyr.webs.com or stop in at one of their practices, right here in Central, every Tuesday night. 12 ANNOUNCEMENTS Elizabeth Williams and Cassen Lasyone to Wed at Magnolia Mound Plantation Elizabeth Fallon Williams of St. Francisville, and Cassen Louis Lasyone of Central, will marry Sunday, June 21, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Magnolia Mound Plantation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
