Congratulations Class of 2015
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
ON THE COVER
uring the fourteen years that I have
been Principal of Bishop Kenny, my
duties have been largely academic in
nature. This year, and going forward, Bishop
Kenny will operate under a new school
model - the same as that used by the three
other Diocesan high schools. This model
has Principal as head of school, a departure
from President/Principal model previously
used at Bishop Kenny. Despite the change I
assure you that the mission of Bishop Kenny
High School remains the same as always:
D
To partner with parents in the education
and formation of their children by providing a
culture of faith, personal enrichment, and programs of high academic standards in which all
students can achieve and excel as they prepare for college and life.
There is important work ahead as we endeavor to preserve and advance
the opportunities that Bishop Kenny must provide for our students. I have
been fortunate to work in close collaboration with Father Houle in my years
as Principal, and even before that, as Dean of Students. I have learned many
lessons from him over the years and I am fortunate that he remains both a
mentor and a friend. Please be assured that my commitment to our mission,
preservation of our standard of excellence, and advancement of future
opportunities for our students is steadfast. I embrace my role with much
enthusiasm and a humble spirit.
I thank Bishop Estévez and BK’s past President, Father Houle for their
confidence in me and look forward to working with the entire Bishop Kenny
community as we enter this school year and many school years to come.
Sincerely,
Todd M. Orlando
Principal
Our cover pays tribute to Father Michael Houle.
Last winter Father Houle announced that, after 26
years, he would be leaving his position as President of
BK to become Pastor of St. Paul’s Parish at Jacksonville
Beach and to continue his many duties in Diocesan
Administration.
In June, administrators, school board members,
and some of Father’s close friends gathered at a dinner
at the River Club in celebration of the proverbial job
well done. Retired Bishop Victor Galeone opened the
evening in prayer followed by retired Bishop John
Snyder who delivered a few personal remarks. After all,
it was Bishop Snyder who brought Father Houle back
to Jacksonville in 1989 to take over at BK. Bishop
Snyder also read a congratulatory letter to Father Houle
written by Bishop Felipe Estévez, who was unable to
attend the party. Presentations were made by Mr.
Michael Broach on behalf of the Senior Class and by
Principal Todd Orlando who gave Father a check representing the combined generosity of so many wellwishers. Principal Orlando concluded his remarks with
the following:
Thank you for the countless ways that you have
transformed your alma mater into the beautiful school
that it is today. A Catholic School to its very core…just
what Archbishop Hurley imagined back in 1952 when
Central Catholic High School opened its doors. Thank you
for making it possible for all children from all backgrounds
to enroll in our school. Thank you for the beautiful campus
that we enjoy today…a wonderful place for our students
to spend their high school years.
And, finally, thank you for entrusting the future of
Bishop Kenny High School to me. You have been a mentor
and friend to me for many years. I am honored that you
have entrusted this school…that has meant so much to
you…to my care. It will be my privilege to follow in your
footsteps.
Teachers Go On Field Trips Too!
In the spirit of the 450th anniversary of
St. Augustine on the first day of pre-planning,
all members of the faculty and staff
embarked on a pilgrimage to the Cathedral
Basilica in St. Augustine. Cathedral pastor
and former BK faculty member Father Tom
Willis met with faculty and staff to talk about
the history of the Cathedral, recent improvements that have been made, and even
brought out the relic of St. Augustine of
Hippo for our visitors to see.
After leaving the
Cathedral, the group
went on to visit the
Mission Nombre de Dios
and the Chapel of Our
Lady of La Leche. A fitting way to begin the
new school year!

the next level. In this case, Father Michael Houle has
passed the torch onto longtime colleague Todd
Orlando who has occupied the Principal’s office at BK
for the past 14 years.
Simply stated, Father Houle leaves Bishop Kenny
High School after 26 years of transformational work.
He has impacted the lives of thousands of students,
parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends and, in the
eyes of many, the 55-acre campus that only marginally resembles the one he took over in 1989.
In recent issues of The Avenue, most notably our
salute to Father Houle’s 25th anniversary as President
of BK, we detailed the extensive list of building and

improvement projects that have been so successfully
completed under his direction. Those projects have
helped transform BK and its grounds into the beautiful campus it today.
Principal Todd Orlando
presented Father Houle with a
token of appreciation after
addressing the gathering at The
River Club in June.
For most leaders that would be legacy enough.
Not in this case, however, because what Father
Michael Houle leaves behind is so much more important than bricks and mortar - it is the personal stories.
Most will never be told. They are the stories of countless students and their grateful parents who knew
two simple things. First, they wanted their children to
experience the Catholic education offered at Bishop
Kenny and, second, no matter the reason, tuition was
out of reach.
Father Houle’s real legacy at BK lives in those

who were helped, quietly and generously, and whose
lives have been impacted by their years at Bishop
Kenny. His challenge to those who follow is to maintain BK’s tradition of generosity to those in need. That
is the challenge and the legacy.
Friends, old and new, gathered

Gladys Prior Award for Career Teaching Excellence
Presented to Val Doner
Longtime BK faculty member Val
Doner was taken completely by surprise last April when Principal Todd
Orlando, accompanied by a team of
representatives from the University
of North Florida, interrupted her
class mid-lesson to announce that
she had been selected a winner of
the Gladys Prior Award for Career
Teaching Excellence.
Mrs. Doner is BK’s Language Arts
Department chair and forensics
Mrs. Val Doner
coach. She teaches English, speech,
debate, and Advanced Placement
language and composition. A teacher for 35 years, she is described
as an educator who inspires her students “to reach for the proverbial stars.” Among the nomination letters submitted on
Mrs. Doner’s behalf was one from former student Dr. Peter
Sinelli ‘88, of the University of Central Florida, who shared
the following:
The Gladys Prior Awards for Career Teaching Excellence are
among the largest monetary awards for teachers in the nation.
Gilchrist Berg, founder and president of Water Street Capital, a
Jacksonville investment company, established the awards in 1998
to honor Gladys Prior, his 4th grade teacher at Ortega Elementary
School. In addition, Mr. Berg honored his 6th grade teacher Gladys
Roddenberry by naming five UNF graduate scholarships after her.
Mr. Berg has pledged over $2,000,000 to continue these awards for
Duval County public and private school teachers. The University of
North Florida College of Education and Human Services manage
the awards.
Mrs. Doner was one of four teachers honored at an awards
dinner held at The River Club in May. Each of the honorees was presented with a check in the amount of $15,000. Mrs. Doner joins
past Bishop Kenny Prior Award winners Mrs. Maria Randle and Mrs.
Vicki Schmitt.
I vividly remember being concerned when I saw her
name on my junior year schedule. It read simply: ‘“English
Honors: Doner.” She had a reputation for being tough and
strict; a serious teacher who didn’t tolerate nonsense or
excuses. So it was with some trepidation that I, as an irredeemable fifteen year old cut-up, entered her classroom in
August 1986. Now, nearly thirty years later, I cannot imagine that my life would have turned out as it has without her
guidance.
Mrs. Doner surrounded by her students after being surprised with the announcement
that she had won a Gladys Prior Award.
Sister Marie Celinie Joubert, SSJ Catechetical Award
Fr. Houle Receives Award for Excellence in Forming the Faithful
On April 23, 2015 at St. Matthew’s Church in Jacksonville, Sister
Jane Stoecker, SSJ, Superior General of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and
Erin McGeever, Diocesean Director of Christian Formation, acknowledged several members of the diocese who were nominated and
selected to receive the Sister Marie Celinie Award for Excellence in
Catechetics for 2015. Friends and family members of the award recipients gathered for the ceremony and a reception in their honor.
Among the award recipients was Reverend Michael R. Houle. Other
recipients included Angela Boyette of St. Mary, Mother of Mercy in
Macclenny, Dorothy Hesson of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint
Augustine, Marguerite Sastre of St. Paul School, Jacksonville Beach,
and Sr. Victora Will, SND, from Holy Rosary Parish and School.
Sr. Marie Celinie Joubert, SSJ, was one of the original eight religious sisters who came to Florida at the request of Bishop Augustin
Verot. Her ministry extended not only to the original mission of educating the African-American populations in St. Augustine, but also to
4
some of the early outposts in Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville’s
northside. She was missioned to teach African-American students
first in St. Augustine and then at St. Catherine School on Main Street
in Jacksonville. Over the years this school moved often and eventually became the location we know today, St. Pius V (1921). Sr. Celinie
and two other Sisters also went north to found St. Michael School in
Fernandina Beach. When the yellow fever epidemic struck while the
Sisters were on retreat in St. Augustine, they returned to visit and care
for the sick in Fernandina. Sr. Celinie died on Sept. 22, 1877 while
tending to the needs of the victims of yellow fever.
This newly created recognition award acknowledges Father
Michael Houle’s dedication to catechesis in the many roles he has
served including service at the Diocesan level in founding the
Ministry Formation Program and serving as Superintendent of
Catholic High Schools, as well as Father Houle’s 36 years at Bishop
Kenny High School as religion teacher and president.

AUCTION
29th BK Boosters Auction
T
his year’s BK Boosters auction held on March 21 was a record breaker.
Donations were up, attendance was up, and the profit was up! In all, a net
profit of $120,000 was realized bringing the 29-year total profit from this
longstanding BK tradition to more than $2,000,000! This year’s proceeds will
be used for, among other things, the second payment on the BK Boosters
$100,000 pledge to the stadium improvements completed last summer. Other
uses for the money include paying the cost of post-season team transportation,
team uniforms, equipment, and a myriad of other financial requests yet to be
imagined!
The calm before the storm!
This year marked the 17th year in a row that our friends at Carrabba’s Italian
Grill provided a delicious buffet dinner featuring chicken marsala and steak
marsala to a hungry auction crowd. Every item is freshly cooked and beautifully
presented to 500 appreciative guests. Following dinner, auction-goers enjoyed
the delicious ice cream desserts donated by the Devenny family, owners of
Bruster’s Ice Cream. We thank the Devennys, all of whom are BK graduates, for
their continued generosity to the auction.
The auction is not only successful in raising funds to help defray costs and
underwrite projects to enhance the quality of extracurricular and athletic programs for our students, but it also brings volunteers together. It requires months
of planning and a committee of at least 100 parents and friends of BK to put it all
together. Volunteers, old and new, are always needed, so please keep your eyes
peeled for meeting notices and announcements about auction work days - and
don’t forget to mark your calendar and plan to join us on auction night, April 9, 2016.
Our thanks is extended to all of the people, past and present, who have
been a part of the auction’s growth and ask that all of our alumni, parents, and
friends help make this event continue to thrive well into the future.
Wine Shoppe Chairman Cheryl O’Connor and volunteer
Kathy Parete happily serve the crowd that lined up early
to participate in this year’s wine event. When it was all
over, 150 bottles of wine with a value of $4900 were sold.
Luman Beasley, the best auctioneer in Jacksonville,
always does a fantastic job of getting the most
value out of the live auction. This year Luman sold
over 100 live auction items for $63,000!

AUCTION 2015
A Day - And a KNIGHT - To Remember
As the top bidders of the BK Boosters auction item, “A Meet &
Greet with Jaguars QB Blake Bortles,” Mike and Heather Trovato and
their two children enjoyed the exclusive opportunity to meet their
favorite player after the final mini-camp session on June 18.
What made this family outing extra special is the fact that
Mike and Heather are UCF alumni and followed Bortles' career at
UCF, where he led the Knights to the 2013 American Athletic
Conference championship and a Fiesta Bowl win over heavily
favored Baylor.
Daughter Addison, 7, was dressed as a Jaguars cheerleader,
while brother Milo, 5, wore a Bortles jersey to the practice. Each
had an official NFL football, part of the auction item put together
by BK Booster and UCF alum Joe DeSalvo, and Tad Dickman of the
Jaguars PR department. Mike said he circled the live auction item
when he received the booklet days before the auction took place
back in March.
In addition to meeting Bortles, the youngsters got their footballs signed by, and pictures taken with, wide receivers Marqise
Lee and Allen Hurns, tight end Julius Thomas, and head coach Gus
Bradley.
“This was a great Jaguars experience for us and the kids, said
Mike, whose family attends San Juan del Rio Catholic Church. The
day proved to be a wonderful family event and one that we will
cherish for many years.’'
Auction committee member Joe
DeSalvo joined Mike and Heather
Trovato and their children Addison
and Milo at their exclusive opportunity
to meet Blake!
Coach Gus Bradley also took the
time to meet the Trovato family.

CLASS OF 2015
Graduation Week 2015
63rd Graduating Class of BKHS
BK Alum Addresses the Class of 2015
G
raduation week is full of activities for members
of the senior class and their families to enjoy.
The activities begin with an Awards Program
and Reception on Thursday night at the University of
North Florida. Graduation Mass is held the following
day at St. Joseph’s Church in Mandarin, and the week
concludes on Saturday morning with commencement
exercises at the University of North Florida.
A class snapshot would tell you that the Class of
2015 is made up of 316 graduates; 100% of whom were
accepted to college. The class earned $10.2 million
dollars in college scholarships and performed 72,025
hours of community service during their high school
careers.
Senior Awards
The Senior Awards Program, held at the University
of North Florida, saw students gather to collect more
than 500 certificates, trophies, scholarships, medals,
appointments, and even a few oversized presentation
checks! Many knew why they had been invited, and
others were surprised when their names were called to
accept special awards. A complete list of all of the
scholarships and awards presented to the Class of 2015
is printed in this publication.
Graduation Mass
Graduation Mass, which
is held at St. Joseph’s Church
in Mandarin, is always a special event as it marks the
final time that classmates
will attend Mass as a group.
This year’s celebrant was
Rev. Jason Trull, graduate of
the BK Class of 1992.
Commencement
Graduation speaker Patrick O’Connor Valedictorian of the BK Class of 1997.
Patrick is Senior Vice-President, Regional
Director, Raymond James Financial, Inc.
Patrick was contacted by Coach Billy Donovan
and became a preferred walk-on at the University
of Florida. He was named Student Athlete of the
Sweet 16 game in Seattle, was a member of the SEC All-Academic Team, and was a member of the
SEC Good Works team. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in political science
AND a Master’s degree in International Business in just four years!
Out of college, Patrick joined Raymond James, a leading financial services and wealth management company based in St. Petersburg, FL. He has held a variety of leadership roles, was responsible
for the firm’s Wealth Management and Retirement group, chaired the firm’s Investment Committee
and, at the age of 29, was named Senior Vice President, one of the youngest in Raymond James’ history. Patrick is a frequent spokesperson for Raymond James and has been featured and quoted in
the Wall Street Journal, Investment News, and appeared on the cover of On Wall Street.
Graduation Speech Highlights
In his address to the Class of 2015, Patrick O’Connor delivered a message focused on a theme of personal responsibility. His expertly delivered speech, which was a mix of useful advice and lighthearted
stories, was well received by everyone. Here are a few of the highlights:
❥ Keep mom and dad’s advice in the back of your mind but take full responsibility for all of your decisions.
Rev. Jason Trull ‘92
celebrated Mass.
The week concluded with the 63rd commencement exercises of Bishop
Kenny High School. The
ceremony was held bright
and early on Saturday,
May 23 at the University of
North Florida. Mr. Patrick
O’Connor, a member of
the Bishop Kenny Class of
1997, delivered the customary address to the
graduates, and Bishop
Felipe Estévez presented
diplomas to each proud
graduate.
Bishop Estévez addresses the
63rd graduating class.
This year’s graduation speaker, Patrick O’Connor,
was the valedictorian of the BK Class of 1997. He
graduated with a 4.95 GPA, the highest ever
achieved at Bishop Kenny. Among his many academic honors, Patrick was an AP Scholar and a
National Merit Scholar, and he scored a 1590 on the
SAT as a sophomore!
Patrick also excelled on the basketball court.
He earned many honors as a Crusader including
All-State, FACA 4A Player of the Year, Florida TimesUnion Top Ten Scholar Athlete, and a Jasper, the
Florida First Coast Sports Award.
❥ Learn to be financially responsible. Financial literacy is one of the most overlooked components of
a formal education. Be in charge of your bank account. Avoid credit card debt at all costs. Set a
budget and stick to it.
❥ Get a lesson in doing laundry before you get on campus. I spent my entire first semester using fabric
softener in lieu of laundry detergent. My clothes never really got clean for four months, but at least
they were soft.
❥ Go to Mass. Hopefully you realize the importance that Catholic values will play in your life. It might
be easy to let this part of your life fall into the background when you’re on your own, but I found it
a very helpful way to meet new people and keep me grounded.
❥ Next, an obvious one…go to class. And, by class, I mean a live class. Do not fall prey to watching
lectures online or cramming at the end of the semester. Studying is so much easier when you soak
up the live lectures.
❥ Build real relationships that transcend cyberspace. The richness of the college experience does not
happen on your smartphone.
❥ Volunteer or find ways to give back to others. It is easy to be self-absorbed at this time of your life,
but try to remember the impact your gifts can have on others and the joy it can bring you.
❥ And finally… the freshman 15 is real.
❥ I hope I didn’t sound too much like your parents in going through this list, but while we are on the
topic of parents, be sure to thank them today and every chance you get. They gave you a gift in
choosing to send you to Kenny and made sacrifices to do so.

CrusaderVision
Wins Award
(L-R) Cooper Huskey ’18,
Dallas Smith ’15 and Paxton
Driscoll ’17 work the
CrusaderVision production
booth during an athletic
contest in the John A.
Baldwin Athletic Center.
C
rusaderVision started out three years
ago out as a one camera, one laptop,
and one adviser project designed to
livestream Bishop Kenny football to the internet for family and friends of BK that could not
be in attendance. The highlight that first year
was when the parent of one player watched
her son play on a Friday night while on a
business trip in China.
Now in its fourth year, CrusaderVision
has grown into a full blown production company that broadcasts events throughout the
year to the BK community. Approximately
twenty students, advised by Mr. Vinny
Saladino and Mr. Tim Yocum, serve as student
producers, directors, videographers, sound
technicians, and graphics producers.
Students primarily broadcast campus events,
but the crew has traveled to the University of
North Florida for commencement exercises
and as far away as Panama City to broadcast
boys’ basketball playoff action.
This past July, Mr. Saladino, Mr. Yocum
and freshman Cooper Huskey traveled to
Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the inaugural NFHS Network Broadcast Academy. They
participated in a variety of activities designed
to create a hands-on experience that covered every aspect of broadcast production
from behind-the-scenes production to live
reporting from the field. The trio also had the
opportunity to listen to experts in the field of
broadcast production and promotion including Chris Cotter ESPN Sports anchor, Steve
Koonin-CEO and owner of the Atlanta Hawks,
and Brad Nessler-ESPN/ABC sports announcer.
The highlight of the weekend was the
awards banquet held Saturday evening.
Schools participating in the Student
Broadcast Program were celebrated for their
accomplishments in the 2014-2015 school
year.
Awards ranged from Broadcast
Program of the Year, Student Announcer of
the Year to Highlight Clip of the Year.
CrusaderVision was nominated for highlight
of the year, featuring Charles Wade’s huge 80
yard TD catch and run against Godby High
School in the regional final last season.
Seated in the front row of the awards ceremony, Cooper Huskey, Mr. Saladino and Mr.
Yocum awaited the results in the category.
Much to their delight, the student-produced
clip won. Huskey eagerly accepted the
award on behalf of the CrusaderVision production crew and Bishop Kenny High School.
The NFHS Network has also recognized
CrusaderVision, an affiliate of the National
Federation of High Schools Broadcast
Network participating in the Student
Broadcast Program, as a Select Program for
the past two years. CrusaderVision is proud
to broadcast Bishop Kenny events to our
community.

live and on-demand programming on

Inaugural Catholic Grade School Art Exhibition
Art teacher and BK Art Gallery Curator Kelly Long initiated the firstever K-8 Art Exhibition at Bishop Kenny High School in March of this year.
Elementary schools from throughout the Diocese of St. Augustine were
invited to submit student artwork to the exhibit. According to Ms. Long,
“The exhibition was designed to highlight the artistic talent and achievements of our Diocesan elementary school students and, at the same time,
encourage them to continue to pursue their artistic abilities and interests.”
Each school was invited to submit up to 15 works for consideration.
The artwork was then judged in three grade level categories:
Kindergarten-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grades, and 6th-8th grades. Twodimensional works were accepted including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, digital media, film, etc.
All of the initial submissions were reviewed by an impartial panel of
judges. All of the students whose artwork was accepted, along with their
parents and art teacher,
were invited to an
opening reception held
at the BKHS Art Gallery
on March 3. The artwork was on display in
the gallery through the
month of March.
Planning for the
second annual K-8 exhi- Artwork submitted to the first-ever Catholic
bition is underway. Grade School Art Exhibition was displayed in
the BK Art Gallery throughout March.
While a date has not
been confirmed, it is projected to take place in either November or
December. Information will be sent to all of the schools in September.

Host an International Student at BK
Bishop Kenny High School is pleased to welcome international students to Jacksonville and the BK community. In
addition to taking advantage of the academic program offered at Bishop Kenny, international students are eager to take
part in a real cultural experience by living with an American host family. Interested families should live within a 30 minute
commute of the school, have a spare bedroom, and be prepared to provide the student with three meals daily.
If you are interested in learning more about the possibility of opening your home to an international student, please
contact Bishop Kenny's home stay partner, gphomestay at info@gphomestay.com or by phone 781-996-0429. Host families receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 and will be trained and supported by gphomestay.
24th Annual Scholars Awards Breakfast
Each spring the Scholar Awards Breakfast is the forum that
allows the administration an opportunity to honor students who
bring honor to themselves and their school for accomplishments
in academics, service, the arts, and other endeavors that take
place off campus. This year 217 students were invited to this
event. Now in its 24th year, this program has acknowledged the
accomplishments of over 4,000 students who have made a positive impact on Bishop Kenny and the Jacksonville community

Navy ship named to honor both Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd
President of the United States, and the former First Lady, Eleanor
Roosevelt. The cadets were greeted by the ship’s Commanding
Officer, Commander Jason Reller. Despite a busy schedule, CDR Reller
took the time to personally show the cadets the various operations
onboard the Roosevelt.
The cadet’s first stop was the bow, where they were shown the
various weapons systems on board. Other activities included a tour of
the bridge and the Combat Information Center. They were also

traveled to Orlando, Florida for a three day orientation trip in
March. On the first day of the trip, which was a Friday, students
visited the University of Central Florida. The sprawling college
campus gave them an opportunity to observe first-hand what
life as a college student attending a major university looks like.
On Saturday and Sunday they enjoyed the attractions and shows
at Universal Studios and SeaWorld.
The highlight of the 3-day trip was the early Sunday morning
start of Holy Week. Students attended the 7:30 am Palm Sunday
Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the
Universe. Students were spellbound by the beauty and majesty
of the Basilica. There could not have been a better way to start
the last day of the trip than by celebrating the Palm Sunday
Eucharist in such a beautiful church.
Bishop Kenny High School NJROTC Cadets pier-side by USS Roosevelt (DDG-80)
briefed on the many systems that the Roosevelt uses to conduct missions. There was also a tour of the helicopter hangar bays and flight
deck, the officers’ wardroom, and the enlisted mess deck.
The cadets even got a chance to observe first-hand the ship’s
crew conducting a multitude of shipboard drills. The ship tour was
highly appreciated and enjoyed by the cadets as they were exposed
to the finest of the U.S. Navy’s personnel and war material. A special
thanks to Cadet Lieutenant Shirk, Bishop Kenny Special Operations
Officer, who coordinated the visit onboard the USS Roosevelt, and
especially to the ship’s Commanding Officer, CDR Reller for taking
time out of his busy day to personally lead the tour.

The 2015 Area Twelve Leadership Academy was held June 613 at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia- the filming location of the 1981 movie TAPS. The top NJROTC cadets
from seventy different high schools in the North Florida and
Georgia region attend this summer leadership training program.
This year Bishop Kenny had the honor of sending five outstanding cadets to this academy. These cadets woke up in the early
morning to run, had to pass a physical fitness test, took leadership classes, marched, and experienced inspections of their
rooms and uniforms. Overall leadership academy taught its graduates important leadership skills including etiquette, discipline,
time management, and the importance of integrity.

Human Trafficking Victims
HUNGER FIGHT
Reach Out and
Feed Someone!
When the Apostles said to Jesus that the
people who had come to listen to his words were
hungry, He invited them to go and look for food. Being poor themselves,
all they found were five loaves and two fish. But, with the grace of God
they managed, according to the Scriptures, to feed a multitude of people,
even managing to collect what was left over and avoiding that it went to
waste.
Students from the BK Interact Club, along with representatives from Lands’
End and Baker’s Sporting Goods, present 25 fully-loaded backpacks to
World Relief to benefit victims of Human Trafficking.
Members of the Bishop Kenny Interact Club presented 25 backpacks
to representatives of World Relief and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at a
ceremony in May. The fully loaded backpacks were the result of a joint
effort between the students, catalog retailer Lands’ End, and Jacksonvillebased Baker’s Sporting Goods.
The backpacks were earmarked for victims of sex trafficking, part of
the tragedy of human trafficking. Each of the backpacks was fully
equipped with personal items, clothing, toiletries and a journal to write in.
The backpacks are necessary because victims who are taken off the streets
may not return to collect any of their belongings. The journals were
intended to help victims realize that there is hope and a way out of this
form of modern day slavery. The Interact students became interested in
this project because Bishop Estévez, leader of the Catholic Diocese of St.
Augustine, has expressed the need to help eradicate this human tragedy.
The Office of Campus Ministry selected HUNGER FIGHT as our 2015
Lenten sacrificial campaign and hosted a community packing event during the lunch mods in the school cafeteria on February 26, 2015. During
the fun-filled pak-a-thon event, coordinated by Coach Winkler, we collected in excess of $4,000 and packaged 10,156 meals. The meals were distributed by HUNGER FIGHT on our behalf to the Sulzbacher Center,
Mandarin Food Bank, and St. Luke Food Pantry in Middleburg, FL. Special
thanks for a successful Lenten Campaign to the BKHS faculty, staff, students, and clubs – especially March for Life, NHS, Forensics, SGA,
Newspaper, Zip Club, Latin Club, Interact, Yearbook, Saint Vincent de Paul,
and the many other donors whose wish it was to remain anonymous.

HUNGER FIGHT Bishop Kenny’s Lenten
2015 project.
World Relief, an international organization that offers assistance to
victims of poverty, disease, hunger, war, disasters, and persecution is coordinating the effort and reaching out to the community for support.
According to Bishop Kenny teacher and Interact Club sponsor Mrs. Chris
Ball, “Our students were shocked to learn that human trafficking is so
common in North Florida and were especially moved to hear that so
many of the victims are in their age group.” Club members quickly
reached out to Lands’ End and Baker’s Sporting Goods for assistance with
this appeal. Originally asked to provide one backpack, participants were
proud to be able to contribute 25 to the cause.
Mr. Ford Jones, a representative of Lands’ End, Brad Brooks of Baker's
Sporting Goods, Katy Corrigan from the Women's Center of Jacksonville,
Michelle Crowe from World Relief, and Jackson Short of the Sheriff’s
Department, along with Interact Club representatives and Bishop Kenny
High School administrators were on hand for the presentation.
A representative from the
Jacksonville Mayor’s Office
presented a letter of commendation to volunteers
for their efforts on behalf
of the victims of Human
Trafficking. A portion of
the letter reads:
Because of the dedicated
work of those involved, 25 local victims of human trafficking will
know that hope and help exists for them here on the First Coast. The
donated backpacks and the items contained within will help victims
create new, healthy lives. But more importantly, they are a message
to each of them that their lives and their futures, matter.

A
s a faith-based school in the Catholic tradition we are committed first and foremost to the faith formation of the youth
entrusted to our care. This formation does not take place in a vacuum.
It can be said that our students are enrolled simultaneously in three
schools - first, and most important, the school of the family, second, our
faith-based school (less than 7 hours a day), and third, the school of the
secular culture. We are tasked with engaging and permeating our
youth’s heads, hearts, and hands. This is accomplished through religion
classes, retreat and prayer experiences, and involvement in Christian
service. It has become increasingly difficult for the schools of the family and our own faith-based school to counteract the culture in this postChristian era. Our students are bombarded with a daily media barrage
of messages that run contrary to our Judeo-Christian values that we
intend to pass along in our school and family settings.
102 Members of the senior class were installed as Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion. Students and their proud parents
were invited to attend the Mass and ceremony.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Installed
F
ather Jose Panthaplamthottiyil of Assumption Catholic
Church presided at the Installation Mass for 102 members
of the Class of 2016. Deacon Robert De Luca assisted as the
Deacon of the Word and Table. The Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion receive the faculty from the local Bishop to
assist with the distribution of communion whenever it seems
necessary for the pastoral benefit of the faithful and whenever
sufficient numbers of priests, deacons, or installed acolytes are
not available. During his homily, Father Jose encouraged the candidates for installation to be good examples of Christian living in
faith and in conduct and to strive to grow in holiness through
regular reception of the sacraments of confession and the
Eucharist. The newly installed came forward to receive their
blessed medallion as an outward sign of the unique ministry.
Parents and invited guests gathered in the cafeteria for a continental breakfast. Each extraordinary minister of Holy Communion
received a Certificate of Installation signed by Bishop Felipe
Estévez, along with a special word of encouragement to exercise
their new role at Sunday liturgy in their parish.
Deacon De Luca remarked, “We are grateful to these students for their willingness to serve the Bishop Kenny family in
this unique way. Their presence at morning Mass and their assistance at our grade level and school-wide Masses is an inspiration
to us all. Additionally, they provide a great service as our school
ambassadors during open houses and as buddies to our new
transfer students.”

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny football team had another outstanding season in 2014 by qualifying for the state playoffs
for the sixth year in a row and advancing to the State
Quarter Finals in Class 5A. The Crusaders finished the season
with a record of 10 and 2 and won their fourth district title
in the past five years. The 2014 season was highlighted by a
season opening victory over Bartram Trail in an exciting
overtime game, and convincing district victories over
Ribault on homecoming and at perennial rival Baker County.
The Crusaders opened the post season with a 38-15 victory
over Palatka, setting up a re-match of last year’s thrilling
playoff game versus Clay High School. This time around the
Crusaders jumped out to a quick lead and held on to beat
the Blue Devils 34-26 avenging last year’s devastating playoff loss and advancing to the State Quarter Finals for the second time in the past three years. The 2014 season ended
with a hard fought 35-14 home loss to eventual State runner-up Tallahassee Godby. The 2014 team says farewell to
17 outstanding seniors who have helped build Kenny football into one of the top programs in Class 5A. These seniors
have amassed a 39 and 8 record over the past four seasons
including three district championships. The Crusaders hope
to continue to build upon this success in 2015 with a promising group of young players entering the fold.
The 2014 team had several individual players that
received recognition and awards. The Crusaders had three
players who were named to the Class 5A All-State Team.
Wide Receiver Charles Wade was a 1st Team selection for the
second straight season and Offensive Tackle Tyler Jordan
was also a 1st Team selection after being named to 2nd
Team a season ago. Quarterback Jackson Bradley was also
recognized as an honorable mention All-State selection.
Wade and Jordan were also chosen by the Florida TimesUnion as 1st Team All-First Coast selections and Jackson
Bradley and WR Anthony Farmand were 2nd and 3rd Team
selections respectively. Offensive Guard Alex
Condoroteanu-Orovean and Defensive End Dylan Vestal
were both named All-First Coast Honorable Mention selections. Wade, Jordan, Bradley, Farmand and Vestal were all
named to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association’s AllDistrict team. Charles Wade was also selected as the
District’s 2014 Most Valuable Player. Several members of the
2014 Football Team will continue their football careers at the
collegiate level. Keep an eye on Charles Wade (Wake Forest),
Tyler Jordan (Florida), Jackson Bradley (Villanova), Anthony
Farmand (West Florida), Alex Condoroteanu (West Florida),
John Helow (Tulane), and Dylan Vestal (Jacksonville
University) as they begin their collegiate careers.
The 2014 Bishop Kenny JV Football Team also completed a successful season finishing with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. The Freshman
Football Team went 2 and 2 and gained valuable experience with most
players playing tackle football for the first time. The Crusader program
continues to have strong numbers with 119 boys participating in 2014.
The future of Kenny Football looks bright with a number of exciting
underclassmen ready to excel in 2015.

The boys’ cross country team had another excellent season. The
team was led by junior Mason Gerry and senior Husam Ossi who ran season best times of 16:36 and 16:38, respectively. Mason led the charge in
the post season with a 3rd place District finish and placing as the Region
runner-up. Husam supported the team’s march toward victory with top
ten finishes at both District and Region Championship Meets. These two
top performers led a strong field of varsity runners, including junior Eric
Chiotti, junior Beau Butler, junior James Kaldor, freshman James
Kaczorowki, and senior Brad Franco to a regular season team victory at the
FSU Invitational and the Amelia Island Invitational. In the post season, the
varsity seven claimed the District Championship, the Regional
Championship, and placed 5th at the Class 2A State Championship. The
Bishop Kenny boys’ cross country team returns in 2015 with an experienced roster of front runners who are joined by a host of young up and
coming talent. These hungry athletes look to returning to the podium in

Coach’s Comments:
The Bishop Kenny girls’cross country team continued on in the tradition of excellence for the 2014 season. Conditioning began in the
early mornings of June. After losing five of the top seven runners to
graduation, the team sought to quickly fill their shoes. In mid-July the
25 girls made the annual trip to the mountains of North Carolina for running camp. By the time they stepped up to the starting line for their first
race at Ridgeview High School, the team was ready to go.
The team was edged out for a third place finish at the District meet
and a similar third place finish at the Region meet. The varsity squad was
led by sophomore Grace Gerry and freshman Megan McGovern. Also
leading the charge in the top seven were sophomore Maeghan
Holzbaur, junior Annie Kaczorowski and seniors Catherine Darling, Marie
Fazio, and Raegan Gruber. The team fought hard to maintain their
perennial position as a top ten finisher in the State meet. Most importantly, the entire team, under the leadership of the senior class, laid the
groundwork for a strong returning team for the 2015 season..

Additionally, we are very proud to announce that Molly Burkhardt,
Denvyr Tyler-Palmer and Nadine Williams will be continuing their volleyball careers at the collegiate level. Molly will be playing for the University
of South Florida, Denvyr will be playing for Nova Southeastern
University, and Nadine will be playing for Santa Fe Community College.
The volleyball team would like to thank all of the previous players who
instilled “A Tradition of Excellence”, demonstrating that with hard work
and perseverance anything and everything is possible. The team would
also like to thank the Bishop Kenny Administrators and Staff for their
34
help and support, along with the Booster Club and JOI for making this
year possible. Lastly, we would like to thank the parents for their support
and dedication and all the fans, sponsors, and Bishop Kenny Community
for helping us to achieve our goals. We look forward to another great
and successful season in 2015.

The girls and boys excelled in the State Championship series, with the
girls coming in 2nd and boys placing 4th in the district. Bishop Kenny
was well represented at the Regional meet in Panama City Beach. Some
notable finishes include 7th place for the girls’ Medley and 200 Freestyle
relays, the boys taking 5th place in the 200 Freestyle relay. Senior
Lyndsea Lam was the only swimmer to qualify for the State Meet in her
200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke events, placing 11th and
16th in the state respectively. The solo diver on the team, freshman
Mikayla Martin, brought home 4th place in the State. The top swimming
performers included Lyndsea Lam, Ashton Lundy, Ashley Bucher,
Isabelle Thompson, Amanda Morningstar, Olivia Zerkowski, Emma
Devine, Maggie Bird, and Alex Sample for the girls’ team, and on the
boys’ team John Carr, Richard Certuche, Joseph Pohlgeers, and Coleman
Glisson. The team is looking forward to another great season next fall.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2014-15 Crusaders entered the year with high expectations,
looking to build on the success of previous seasons. Playing an
extremely difficult schedule, they progressed during the year using a
strong sense of teamwork and team chemistry to focus on peaking at
the right time. An exciting trip to the prestigious Kreul Classic
Tournament in Coral Springs during the Christmas break provided one
of the highlights. Returning to Jacksonville, the team won nine of their
last eleven games to finish the regular season on a strong note. Senior
Night against Bolles was another highlight, where the Crusaders used a
total team effort to take down the highly ranked Bulldogs before a terrific home crowd. Finishing undefeated in district play for the 2nd time
in three years, the team used the #1 seed to reach the championship
game for the 4th straight time. In another epic clash, the Crusaders outlasted Baker County 44-42, securing their 3rd straight District
Championship for the 1st time in school history. The team advanced to
the Regional Quarterfinals before falling to Palatka 68-64.
The 2014-15 Crusaders were led by Shaggy Allmond, Christian
Carlyle, Chris Joyce, Grayson Roth, Gabe Merete, Gino Smith, and Kendall
Mitchum. The strong supporting cast included Joseph Churn, Ryan
Gallagher, Lou Walsh, Jordan Lezama, Dawson Pate, Lou Larmoyeux, and
Dwight Holmes. Managers Brad Parker and Jason Zedan provided great
support for the team all season long as well. Our seniors contributed
greatly to our team and to our culture, and their impact on our program
will be felt for many years to come. With a strong returning group, we
look to continue to build on our success next season.

The 2014-2015 varsity girls’ basketball team finished the season with
an overall record of 8-19. The girls were faced with a difficult schedule this
season. The team was led by senior captains Alexis Nunez, Katie Rose, and
Emily Bradley. Alexis Nunez received a scholarship to play at Nova
Southeastern University and all three seniors received the Bright Futures
Scholarship. The roster also included juniors Maria Parker, Emily Bateh,
Jade King, Brenna Edwards, Rachel Rukab, and Nicole Marchigiano, sophomores Isa Horning and Cassie Orlando, and freshman Kobe Jones. The
coaching staff wishes the three seniors the best of luck in college and we
look forward to the upcoming season.

The 2014-15 season was the first time in eight years that Bishop
Kenny participated in FHSAA Competitive Cheerleading. With practices
starting in October, the squad worked relentlessly to perfect their routine. They received much praise after performing for the student body
at the Winter pep rally. Placing third at the Regional competition, the
squad continued to adjust and improve their routine even though
injuries caused some substitutions. The road to the State Semi-finals
took them to Kissimmee, FL, as well as local competitions to qualify. The
girls are looking forward to improving their record in the next competitive season.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2014-2015 season saw the change and development work of the past 3 years beginning to pay off for
the Crusader boys’ soccer program, with a season record
of 20-5-2, becoming the District Champion and
Regional Semifinalist. Most impressive was scoring a
phenomenal 132 goals during the course of the season
while allowing 49 goals by opponents. The aggressive
attacking - pressing style of play the Crusaders are
becoming known for - proved very difficult for most of
the team’s opponents to counter. The BK boys’ soccer
schedule this season was the toughest schedule played
over the past 10 years. Of the 23 matches played, 6
opponents were Regional Finalists, 8 additional were
Regional Quarterfinalists, and 8 District Champions in
Classes larger the Bishop Kenny’s 2A.
Led by a core of returning seniors Trey Langlois,
Andrew Tucker, Charles McMillan, Bradley Franco and
Adrian Navotas, the Crusaders added two transfer seniors in Thad Daguilh and Joseph Durkin.
Complementing this group of seniors was a number of
returning juniors David Bishop, Jake Franco, Seba
Moreno, and sophomores John Darling, Mark Jubani,
Charlie Wilkinson, Jack McVearry, Mason Martin. Gabe
Nackashi, Elijah Mincey and Ryan Meisler. For the second consecutive season, freshmen made significant
contributions to the BK success -- freshmen Luka Gjuraj,
Camilo Ramirez and Joe Kinney made the Varsity squad
and contributed heavily during the season.
The season scoring began slowly for the Crusaders
with 2 wins, 2 ties and 2 losses in the first 6 matches
against quality opponents like Gainesville Bucholz (Win),
Bishop Moore Orlando (Tie) and Mandarin (Loss). BK
then got a taste of the goal in an 8-0 win over Bishop
Snyder and went on a 5 game winning streak, scoring 32
goals in 5 matches while only allowing 1 goal to be
scored against them. Then came a wake up call in a significant loss to Fleming Island that really sparked the
team’s performance. This translated into a 12 win – 1
loss run over the next 13 matches.
Prior to Christmas, the Crusaders traveled to Tampa
to play in the Berkeley Prep Invitational Tournament and delivered an
outstanding performance. In a very tough bracket, BK lost its initial
match to Tampa Jesuit 3-2 in a close match just after arriving in
Tampa. But, in form, BK went on to demolish its remaining opponents. Beating Hillsborough 5-1, St Petersburg Catholic (ranked 1st
in the state in 2A at the time) 8-0 and Shorecrest (ranked 2nd in the
state in 1A at the time) 9-1 to place 3rd – as Tampa Jesuit became the
eventual Tournament Champion. Trey Langlois and Thad Daguilh
were both selected to the all-tournament team for their outstanding
individual performances.
Returning from Tampa, the team set it sights on the District
Championship. With a 1st place seeding, having posted a perfect 60 record in the District, the Crusaders faced Bishop Snyder in the
District Semifinal and walked away with an 8-0 victory, to set up a
grudge-match final against Bolles. The final proved to be a very hard
fought battle that saw the match slide to overtime, with the match
tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. With tremendous pressure right
from the overtime kickoff, BK’s senior and leading scorer Trey Langlois
buried the net to win the match and the District Championship for
the Crusaders – the school’s first in a number of years.
The Crusaders playoff run continued against Yulee in the
Regional Quarterfinal. Yulee played a very unconventional defensive
posture and held the Crusaders to just 5 goals – as the Crusaders
posted a 5-0 win that saw the Crusaders possess the ball 95% of the
match. As the Crusaders moved forward to the Regional Semifinal –
it would again face Bolles for the 3rd time this season. But this time
fate conspired against the boys, and the Crusaders lost a very tight
3-2 match to the Bulldogs - who went on to finish 2nd in 2A, losing
to Gulliver Prep in the State Final.
This season has been the culmination of 4 years of development that has put the BK boys’ soccer program on a solid path to
continued success. The Crusaders lose only 7 seniors and 5 starters
from this year’s team. The future is very bright for the Crusaders in
building outstanding soccer players and, more importantly, men.
The Crusaders success this season bred a great deal of individual success, with senior players receiving offers/interest from a number of outstanding collegiate programs – Clemson, Harvard, Boston
College, Wake Forest, St. Leo’s, Belmont Abbey, MIT, and a number of
others that are looking at our underclassmen. Bishop Kenny posted
two All-American players in Trey Langlois and Andrew Tucker, three
All-Region players in Trey Langlois, Andrew Tucker, and Thad Daguilh,
four All-First Coast selections, The Gatorade/USA Today Player of the
Year, NSCAA State Player of the Year, FDF “Mr. Soccer”, and 2A player
of the year. While these seniors will be difficult to replace, the talent
pool of underclassmen sported by the Crusaders this season might
indicate that the best is yet to come…..

Coach’s Comments:
As I reflect on this past season, what stands out are all the
obstacles that were placed before us; most notably, the injuries. I
don't think there has ever been a team with the number of concussions we had this season. There wasn't a single game this season
where we had all of our players able to play.
However, as I think back about this year, I come to realize what
made it so special are these amazing young women. I think I speak
for all of the soccer coaches when I say it is an honor to be associated with them.
Anytime you have close to forty girls together for several
months, there will be some differences. I am in awe of how well they
have come together as a team. Nothing in life worthwhile comes
easily. How hard the ladies work to come together is a skill they will
take with them for all their future success.
We lose five amazing seniors, one of whom will continue playing nearby next year. However, all have left a big hole to fill. We especially remember our two senior captains Mackenzie Meisler and
Caroline Romero. These two young women kept this team together
amidst the turmoil of this season. Both were starters for the last four
years, and their leadership showed throughout the season.
Catherine Darling, Aliya Jenkins, and Amanda Stratton were also
major contributors this season both on the field and off. We are

grateful for all that they have done and wish them well as they move
on to college and beyond.
As we look to the future, we have a strong group coming back.
We look forward to seeing them in action this fall. We hope to build
on the foundation created by this group of departing seniors.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2014-2015 season was a great season in many ways. We had
a big group of young men who were all dedicated to a common goal.
With a roster of 32 athletes for both JV and Varsity, the popularity of this
great sport at Bishop Kenny is evident! The coaching staff knew it
would be a special year when they walked into the wrestling room on
the first day of practice and saw a large group of student athletes that
were ready to train.
The Crusaders charged out of the gate with a runner-up team trophy at the Rob Bierbaum Invitational in December. They continued
with an 11-5 dual meet record. When the post season came, they dominated the 10 team field of the 1A District 4 tournament. They placed
7 out of 14 wrestlers into the finals and walked away with BK’s second
consecutive District Team Championship by the huge margin of 62
points! At the 1A Region I tournament, the Crusaders were in second
place after the first day and ended up in 6th place at the end of this 36
38
team tournament. This was the highest team placement of any
Jacksonville area team. Three individuals advanced to the State tournament and performed well in Orlando.
This was a great group of young men that all bonded together
individually to produce some great team results. Senior Nick Toney led
the way dominating the Jacksonville area wrestlers in his weight class.
He ended his BK wrestling career with his third District title, second
Regional runner-up trophy, and his third consecutive time qualifying
and wrestling in the Florida State tournament. Fellow senior, Alex
Condoroteanu-Oroveanu showed great leadership and poise as he led
the team by example on how to be a respectful student athlete during
competition. These two seniors will be missed.
The underclassmen were led by Kyle Black (District Champ), Ryan
Timmons, and freshman Jack Delaney who became the first freshman
to qualify and wrestle in the State tournament in over a decade!

Girls’ Tennis:
The Bishop Kenny 2015 girls’ team was largely composed of players both new to the game and to the team.
This year was a great opportunity for many of our girls to
grow and learn in preparation for the 2016 season. The girls
grew as players, individuals and, most importantly, as teammates. Natalie Deen (SO) was our lone returning letter winner and led the team at the number 1 singles and doubles
position. She was followed by group of talented and deter-
mined newcomers, Raegan Gruber (SR), Genie Robinson
(SR), Maggie Patsy (SR), and Abby Harrison (SO). We also had
a strong back-line of enthusiastic and motivated players
who all competed at least once in match play. Those players were led by Catherine Maige (JR), Angel Boyance (JR),
Grace Fewell (SO), Emily Hawkins (JR), McKenzie Adolphson
(JR), and Lauren Marr (SO). All of our players showed dramatic improvement from the beginning of the season to
the end, and we look forward to our underclassmen returning to put their skills to use next year.
Boys’Tennis:
The boys’ tennis team had an 8-6 record this season.
The team welcomed a mix of new players and also saw
many returning players elevate themselves up the ranks.
Will Thompson (JR) moved up to play number 1 singles and
doubles, showing dramatic improvement from last year.
He ended the season with a 12-4 record in singles, fighting
to the championship round of districts. Will was followed
by Egan Sanchez (SR), Adrian Navotas (SR), Alejandro
Hernandez (JR), and Tyler Chin (SO). Will and Egan moved
deep into the districts championship for doubles. Adrian
Navotas (SR) and Alejandro Hernandez (JR) also fought their
way to the final rounds in doubles. In singles, Adrian and
Tyler both advanced to the final round in the district tournament. The top five players were supported by a strong
back-line made up by Joe Pohlgeers (JR), Jeremy Clermont
(JR), Luke Farmer (JR), Michael Boynton (JR), Chad
Schwipper (FR), and Ryan Capuano (SO)

Spring Sports 2014-2015
The team was the Class 5A – District 3 runner-up and competed in the season ending Region play-offs. The team had
a number of big wins throughout the season. They were
also runners-up in the eight-team Baker’s Sporting Goods
Spring Break Tournament.
Individually, the team had some outstanding performances. Senior centerfielder Dalton Board led the team with
a .466 batting average. He was followed by senior shortstop
Anthony Farmand’s .405. Senior catcher Robbie McMahon
anchored the BK defense while providing valuable offensive
support as well. Junior right fielder Donnie Gleneski led the
team and the city with 29 RBIs. On the mound, senior right
hander Troy Hollinger led the BK pitching staff with 8 wins,
66 innings pitched, and 36 strikeouts.
The Crusaders would like to say goodbye to our nine
graduating seniors. In addition to the accomplishments
already mentioned, all nine of these young men made significant contributions on the field. They provided much
leadership during the year and throughout their BK baseball
careers. Even with the loss of this senior class, the returning
players will make up a strong nucleus for next year’s team.
The next few years look to be in good hands.

Coach’s Comments:
The 2015 track season saw great performances from a young girls’
team and a veteran boys’ team. The girls’ team earned the District
Runner-Up in 2015, 3rd at the Region Meet, and advanced the 4x400m
and 4x800m to the Regional Championship. From Regions, the girls
qualified both relay teams, and senior Emily Myslinski as an individual to
the Class 2A State Championship. The girls’ 4x800m relay, comprised of
junior Annie Kaczorowki, freshman Emma Jane Warren, and sophomores
Maeghan Holzbaur and Grace Gerry began the day with a 13th place finish. Emily Myslinski, Jacksonville University Heptathlete commitment,
had an incredible day by placing 6th in the 100HH, 8th in the 300IH, and
7th in the Shot Put. The Lady Crusaders finished the day with the 4x400m
relay, advancing to the State meet for the first time since 2007, where
freshman Brianna Tribou, sophomore Grace Gerry, junior Kilty Barker, and
senior MacKenzie Meisler finished 14th overall.
The boys had another impressive season finishing as the District
Runner-Up in a close battle with Bolles, and finishing 3rd at the Regional
Championship. At the Class 2A State Meet, the boys’ 4x800m relay team
began the day with a 4th place finish. The 4x800m relay was led by senior Husam Ossi, joined by freshman Nathan Jubran, junior Mason Gerry,
and anchored by senior Trey Langlois. Senior Reid Harris qualified for the
State Meet for the second year in a row and placed 9th in the discus. The
boys’ distance team qualified three individuals to the State Meet. Junior
Mason Gerry (District and Region 800m Champion) placed 9th in the
State 800m run, senior Trey Langlois placed 14th in that same event, and
junior Eric Chiotti placed 15th in the 3200m run. The biggest highlights
of the season, however, have been the two new school record holders.
Senior Gino Smith set a new Triple Jump record of 44’ 9.5”, breaking the
previous record of 43’ 4”, set by Tony Williams in 1985, while senior David
Bell, USF pole vault commitment, claimed his first State Championship
with a 2A State Meet record of 16” 1”, and finished the season with a new
school record of 16’ 5” in the Pole Vault.

The 2015 softball season could best be described as a season of
growth and change. The team was led by five seniors and some underclassmen who had to fill some big shoes. Megan Schroder carried the
team on her back all season long, as she pitched in almost every game.
Juniors Claire Doyle and Natalie Hart were strong, consistent offensive
and defensive forces all season long. Freshmen Caroline DePirro and
Isabel Devore-Suazo were huge assets to the team and were very
impressive as young players. It is exciting to see such growth and talent.
I look forward to having a core group of starters returning next year.

Sobeleski (139lbs), Will Sherman (169lbs), Zachary Gushanas (183lbs), and
Patrick DePirro (199lbs). Junior Zachary Gushanas also qualified for the
state weightlifting meet for the second year in a row which was held at
the Kissimmee Civic Center in April. Zachary finished in 7th place overall
at the state meet and had the top bench press in his classification of
370lbs. The Crusaders return an experienced group of lifters in 2016 and

amount of water dispensed and translates
it into bottles saved. Now that’s quick,

Crusader Baseball History
Last winter we reported that BK graduate Gontran Celerier ‘65 was
spearheading a research project that would result in a complete, permanent, and accurate history of the Crusader baseball program’s individual
player achievement records. After numerous trips to Jacksonville from his
home in Louisiana and months of research including correspondence
with individual players, countless hours viewing microfiche records of the
Florida Times-Union and the now defunct Jacksonville Journal, Gontran
has helped us compile a newly updated records list that includes players
who earned All-City, All-District, All-State, and All-American status as well
as those who were drafted by major league teams.
coincide with the unveiling of the new record boards which will be
installed at the baseball stadium. The event will take place on December
5. A brief ceremony at BK will be followed by a casual dinner at The
Mudville Grille. Invitations will be mailed to all of the players that appear
on the following list.
The following list is the result of this project, and now we ask that
BK’s former players take this opportunity to identify any errors or oversights and bring them to our attention. In the meantime, Joe Joseph ’65,
along with son Louis ‘93, owner of The Mudville Grille in St. Nicholas, and
several other BK graduates, are putting an informal event together to
Please note: All questions and corrections must be called in to Sheila
Marovich, Director of Development 398-7545 or sent to development@bishopkenny.org no later than October 15, 2015. Thank you
Attention Players: Every effort has been made to assemble an accurate portrayal of the history of Bishop Kenny Crusader Baseball. Please
review the following lists for accuracy. Familiar names have been used on
this list. Players appear in each category only once and names are listed
alphabetically by graduation year.

BK’s graduate runners turned out to participate in the annual Alumni Run in August.
2015 Alumni Run
On Saturday, August 8, the Bishop Kenny
Cross Country teams welcomed back many of
their former runners for the annual Alumni Run.
Over 30 alumni showed up to compete against
the current teams over a two mile on-campus
course. In both the men’s and women’s races the
wins went to the current runners.
Barry College runner, Rhett Butler finished
first for the men’s alumni team, while former
Florida runner and Oklahoma State coach, Mason
Cathey provided a convincing first place finish
overall in the women’s race. Among curent
Crusader runners, siblings Grace Gerry and
Mason Gerry finished first for their teams in their
respective races. We look forward to seeing more
of the alumni back for the second annual Alumni
Track Meet in the spring.
BK State Champion Mason Cathey ’00 finished
in first place in the women’s alumni division.
Carla Harris will be performing live on
stage at Carnegie Hall for her fifth in a
series of concerts that started in 2005!
If you are planning to be in the New
York area on November 23 and would
like to attend, tickets are available at
the Carnegie Hall ticket office.
Remember, a portion of the proceeds
from the event will be added to the
Carla Harris Scholarship Fund at BK.
New Carla Harris Scholarship recipients Chandler Poole and
Jada Parker enjoyed an opportunity to meet with Carla Harris and
thank her for her generosity. Despite the fact that Carla lives and
works in New York she likes to stay connected to the students who
receive her scholarship.

Alumni Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship
The annual Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented to
Regine Hilaire and to Blessing Essien as part of the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School in June. Mrs. Elizabeth
McGovern, one of Julie’s teachers at Christ the King, made the presentation to Blessing and Regine, both of whom are now freshmen at
Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of
Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of
the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient is awarded
a one-time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at
BKHS.
Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college.
They had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate, who is now a senior at Florida State University, and a son Ronnie, a member of the BK
Class of 2014. Julie passed away in 2004 after suffering complications
from a heart condition.
(L-R) Christ the King teacher Elizabeth McGovern, Kaylee Burke ’10, scholarship
recipients, Regine Hilaire and Blessing Essien along with Ronnie Burke ’15 all
gathered at the CTK graduation program.
Each of this year’s winners demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie. Each has a positive attitude about life and makes the
most of each day by her service to others, her love of God, and
involvement in her community.
Julie’s parents, Donna and Joe Joseph BK ‘65, and husband,
Ronnie Burke, established this scholarship to honor Julie’s life and
memory in a way she would want. Julie was continually helping others to achieve their goals, giving to others, and serving her church,
school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her
and a shining example of God’s love.
Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the Julie
Joseph Burke Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School is encouraged to contact Sheila Marovich, Director of Development, at 3987545 or development@bishopkenny.org.
Christina Gregson Scholarship
at Holy Family school was Christina Gregson who, in his words,“Was the
best example of overcoming fears and challenges that I have come
across…She even did her best to help me with the cultural shock of
moving to another country….With a strong faith, every obstacle is just
a temporary stop, never a permanent rest. With prayer and faith, nothing is impossible with God.”
(L-R) Dan Gregson, Kathy Gregson, award winner Dinith Mendis, and Kathy MacGregor.
T
he Christina Gregson Scholarship was established by the Gregson
family to honor the memory of a much-loved member of the
Bishop Kenny Class of 2005. Through her courageous battle with
Muscular Dystrophy, Christina taught all who knew her the meaning of
courage and strength.
Freshman Dinith Mendis, a graduate of Holy Family Catholic
School, is the winner of this year’s Christina Gregson Memorial
Scholarship at BK. He won it by submitting an application and essay for
the one-time, one-thousand dollar scholarship.
Kathy Gregson, Christina’s mother, shared Dinith’s winning essay
entitled Life’s Challenges. In it he recounts the challenges he faced
when his family moved to the United States from Sri-Lanka. One of the
first people he encountered after arriving in Jacksonville and enrolling

“At that very moment I saw how she did everything she needed
to, by overcoming her physical challenges… her remarkable faith, positive attitude, graceful and humble heart has affected our outlook on
life that will remain forever.”
Christina’s Catholic religion and Catholic education were very
important to her, as well as her volunteer work at DOSA Camps and the
Mayo Clinic. It is for these reasons that the scholarship has been set up
at Christina’s alma mater where she was so happy and successful for
four years.
According to the criteria governing the scholarship, candidates
must write a brief paragraph describing how they are coping with, or
have overcome, a life-challenging adversity.
We are grateful to the Gregson family for their generosity on
behalf of Dinith and all of the students from Holy Family who will be
selected for this honor in the future.

50 YEARS
The Bishop Kenny Class of 1965 held its 50-year reunion the weekend of March 27th & 28th
at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Jacksonville Beach. A large turnout of 89 classmates plus
spouses attended the weekend events.
The Friday night get-together included a social with cocktails &
appetizers as classmates arrived and renewed friendships. We were
pleased to be joined by eight classmates who had never attended one
of our reunions.
Members of the Class of 1965 gathered at St. Paul’s Church at the
beach for Mass as part of their reunion celebration held in March.
Several groups formed on Saturday for lunch at nearby restaurants
or visits with family & friends in Jacksonville. At 3:00 pm classmate
Father Paul Stewart, who had driven many hours from his duty station
in Mississippi, celebrated Mass at St. Paul Church at the beach for our
class as has been his tradition for all of our reunions. Following Mass,
our classmate Dudley Kay treated us to “specialty” drinks at a Kona Ice
mobile truck he arranged through his franchise to have onsite.
Saturday evening included socializing, dinner, an awards ceremony,
and dancing to music of the sixties. A fun time was had by all! We now hope to plan a “minireunion” for 2017 when we Baby-Boomers celebrate turning 70.
