is the official publication of the
Lone Star Performance Buick Club (Chapter of the
GS Club of America). No part of this publication may
be reproduced in any form or manner without the
express consent of the Lone Star Buick Chapter
GSCA, unless this publication is listed as the source.
Club dues are $25 per year and are payable every
January 1st. Dues entitle the member to a one year
subscription to Quick Times along with other benefits
accordingly. The “Buick” name and all other related
Buick model names are registered trademarks of the
General Motors Corporation. And are used with
permission by the Lone Star Performance Buick
Chapter GSCA through it’s association with the Buick
GS Club of America.
Even though the members had to drive through rain and high winds, we had about 20 members at our meeting Saturday. We ate some good BBQ while we dried out.
The members and officers in attendance agreed LSPBC will support the BCA car show at the
Thornhill Buick dealership in Waxahachie, Texas on October 12, 2002; then have our club
meeting and dinner at the Catfish Plantation Restaurant in Waxahachie about 4:30 pm. Adi
Glatz said he would call and make the reservation for our club.
Officer elections for 2003 will be held in November. Newly elected officers will take over the
1st of January 2003.
Our club race night for Sept. is scheduled for Red-Line drag strip on Friday, Sept. 13th. The
Oct. racing program has been moved to Kennedale Drag Strip the 1st Friday night of the
month due to no turn-out at Denton track last Friday night.
The LSPBC picnic will be November 3. We will probably get things started around 11am.
We still need to find a good location so if you have any suggestions, please contact Frank
Llano or myself.
We are looking into having the LSPBC Mini-Nationals in San Antonio again in 2003. The
members said Sunday was not a good day due to travel to and from the track. They said Saturday night works out better. Of course this is still open to discussion, let us know what you
want!
We still really need volunteers for the car shows! We’ve had a great season so far, but there
are even bigger and better events ahead and we really need some other members to help
out, even if it’s just one event. Please call Frank Llano or myself if you would like to volunteer.

Last year I contributed an article to our LSPBC Newsletter about my racing history. At
this time, I would like to contribute an article about a very good friend of mine and the
LSPBC's. This friend has helped keep my '87 GN mechanically and cosmetically in great
condition for over five years. I have depended upon this friend to use the right parts and
equipment on my favorite car of all time, and he does that. He is always very careful to
protect the appearance of my car. I always feel very confident when he works on it. Due
to the excellent work he does on my cars, I have referred many of my friends' and clients'
cars to him for their repairs over the years. Never one complaint! To find someone like
this friend is almost impossible these days.
This friend is not only a good friend to me, my friends and clients, but is also a very good
friend to the LSPBC. As our club director over the last 3-1/2 years, he and his wife (through a lot of hard work and self-sacrifice
by both of them) developed our club into the best financial and inventory-owned position it has ever been in during its sixteen
year history. The LSPBC monthly car cruise is recognized not only locally, but also in other areas of the country, as one of the
top car cruises each month.
Even though our friend retired as club director a few months ago, he
still helps our club and its members every chance he can and his wife
is still our Club Treasurer, helping as much as she can. While having
the A/C serviced last week on my GN at my friend's shop, I counted
14 GN/T-Type autos at his shop being worked on, ready for pick-up or
for sale. I don't know of very many shops in the U.S. that would have
that many turbo cars at their shop at one time. He is truly a very good
friend to our turbo car owners.
So, the next time you see my good
friends, Adi and his wife Elli Glatz,
give them a big "Thanks!" for being
good friends to you and our club. I
know I thank them all the time.

Michael McCaffrey and Frank Llano have finalized our club’s car show at Ewing Auto Group, Sept. 14th, 9:30 am to 3:30
pm. The dealership is providing FREE hamburgers and hot dogs, soft drinks and chips. (See “Upcoming Events”) It
should be a good one!
The club picnic will be November 3rd. If you have any suggestions for a location, please let Michael or Frank know. So far
we are considering Cottonwood Park in Richardson and Audubon Park in Garland.
The club Christmas party will be December 1st. Again, if you have any suggestions for a location, please let Michael or
Frank know.
Officer elections will be in November or early December, possibly at the club picnic. Now is the time to decide if you would
like to volunteer as an officer or nominate someone for a position. Please contact Michael or Frank if you would like to run

What Works Best?: Bumping Up Your Octane

Over the years we’ve tested many commercial octane boosters, and only a few gave minimal positive results in suppressing
detonation. One of the best ways to evaluate their effectiveness is with a Turbo Regal and a scan tool. When armed with a
scan tool on a computer controlled muscle car, you can then see quantitative results of your test. Used in any sensible
amount, we have yet to see any commercially available fuel additive put back over 3-4 degrees of timing that 93 octane gasoline and 16-17 psi boost takes away on our near stock ‘87 GN.
First we tried numerous runs on Enmark (budget) 93 octane gas and an Armstrong 93 octane chip with the boost hitting 15.5
lbs in first, nudging 17 lbs at the top of second, and dropping back slightly to 16 lbs. In third gear, up to 105 mph. Throughout
the runs, which were recorded with an OTC 4000E monitor, a consistent maximum of 15 deg. timing retard was recorded. Interestingly, a change to a more expensive Amoco 93 yielded the same results. But for curiosity, we had to see if there would
be any differences between the two brands. We next mixed in one gallon of Sunoco Maximal Red 115 octane race gas in with
12 gallons of Enmark 93. Again, after many runs of up to 105 mph, a maximum of only 3 deg. of timing retard was recorded.
So by using this 1 to 12 ratio of race gas to 93 octane pump gas, we were able to bring back 10 to 12 degrees of timing. So
just for what it’s worth, we thought we’d pass along this little test to you. Even a small volume of race gas works better and is
more economical than any octane booster.
All of the above goes for the GS’s too. You’d be surprised how far a gallon or two of leaded Sunoco Maximal will go when
mixed with pump gas. Remember that mathematically your resulting octane is easy to figure.
[(# gallons pump gas) x (octane of pump gas) + (# gallons of race gas) x (octane of race gas)] divided by total gallons
= resulting octane
Restoration and Care for ‘86-’87 GN Wheels

When the factory painted the black accents on the chrome steel Grand National wheels they didn’t do much, if anything, to prepare the chrome for paint. As a result, the original satin black paint tends to fade or flake off after years of normal wear. VHT
makes an excellent paint for restoring those black accents on factory chrome steel GN wheels. I recently repainted the black
accents on my GN wheels with VHT part number SP-652 “Satin Black”. It’s a self-priming epoxy paint and is sold in 11 oz.
aerosol cans. The paint is a perfect match to the original black paint GM used. I purchased the paint from Summit Racing
Equipment for $6.95 plus tax. I only used one can and still had a little over after painting all four wheels.
To apply the paint, I sprayed small quantities of it into a disposable plastic bowl and brushed it on with small foam brushes.
The foam brushes don’t leave brush strokes like bristle brushes do. If you can’t find foam brushes which are small enough you
may have to buy the smallest ones you can find and trim them to a better size. I used acetone to clean up paint spills and mistakes on the wheels. Acetone is available at most hardware stores and works great on the epoxy paint before it is dry.
Allow the paint to fully cure before reinstalling the wheels, if you read the directions on the can (which I did not!) they recommend letting the paint cure for 30 days (that’s right, ”30 days”!) before waxing or buffing. This must also include just plain
washing because I failed to read the instructions and had a couple of small chips flake off when I washed the car a couple of
days after painting the wheels. The paint seems to be fully cured and much more durable now.
I have switched from nylon bristle brushes to “Chenille” wash-mits for washing the wheels. They are much easier on the wheel
paint and center caps and get the wheels just as clean.
This year should be an exciting one for our “Third Saturday”
Cruise Nights. We signed a new contract with the Chuck’s
located on the SE corner of HWY 121 and Preston Road in

place as many times as they choose to enter. Also, LSPBC
members are not eligible to vote for cars in the LSPBC
class and are only eligible to register their cars in the
LSPBC class.

GS Nationals
After much consideration I have decided this will be my last
month to serve as a Quick Times staff member. I really
enjoy working on our club newsletter however Emma and I
are expecting our first child this November. Thus far, our
busy work schedules have prevented us from preparing for
this much anticipated arrival. For this reason, I need to
step away from the newsletter and focus on getting ready
for our first child. We already know it’s a boy and I can’t
wait to take him to his first Buick event.
The newsletter is hard work, but it is also very rewarding. I
have developed a great appreciation for the work of those
who compiled the newsletter previously. I have no regrets
about volunteering although I do regret I will not be able to
continue as a Quick Times staff member.
David Newton has indicated to me that he is willing and
able to continue working on the newsletter, but he cannot
do it alone. It really does take a “staff” of people to publish
a quality newsletter. I have been primarily working the software while David compiles content and keeps track of vital
information. Frank Llano has continuously contributed a
wealth of information and photos. Rick Kinworthy has assisted with reproduction and distribution. We have also
received a great deal of help and support from Adi and Elli
Glatz and Michael McCaffrey as well as contributions from
various club members.
The club needs at least one volunteer to take over where I
leave off. I will be happy to give “tech support” for the
newsletter software (available from Elli Glatz) if it is
needed, although I don’t know how much I will be able to
help after November.
In it’s simplest form, the newsletter is a very important
means of communicating with club members. However, I
believe the newsletter has much greater potential if someone has the time to invest.
