NEWSLETTER ★ i n t e r ★ ★★ ★ ★ 2 ★ W 0 1 3 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Greetings Everyone, ★ What a wonderful year it has been for Region 6. The outstanding accomplishments of the Women’s Olympic Team, and in particular Massachusetts native Aly Raisman (Brestyan’s), were cause for celebration. I had the honor of attending the 2012 Olympics and witness the success and achievements of USA Gymnastics. I hope everyone is riding the wave and experiencing the ‘Olympic Boom’. ★ ★ As we leave 2012 - 2013 brings new excitement to the area. Region 6 will host the prestigious American Cup [Worcester, MA] and the National Championships/National Congress [Hartford, CT]. This is an opportunity to promote gymnastics at the grass roots level and continue the excitement generated by the Olympic Games. If your club has not signed up for the club sales program – take time to contact USA Gymnastics Event Marketing at 317 829-5623. ★ The J.O. season is in full swing and it is important for coaches to review the new policies for entering the Regional Championships [Level 9/10; Level 8 and Xcel]. Information is enclosed, detailing the ’new’ on- line registration process, for the Regional Championships. This procedure will make the State Championships less hectic – but clubs will be responsible for adhering to strict registration deadlines. Please take the time to review the material in this Newsletter. ★★ Kay ★ ★ ★ ★ 2013 AMERICAN CUP ★ ★ ★ ★ Mihai Brestyan and Aly Raisman Best wishes for a happy, healthy and safe 2013, ★ ★ March 2, 2013 DCU CENTER Worcester, MA ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ CONTENTS Regional Directory . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 American Cup . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Regional Elections . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Regional Meet Information . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 - 8 Compulsory Workshop . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 Photos . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 - 11 Athlete Apparel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Letter from Larry . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13-14 Calendar . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 Page 2 • USA Gymnastics • Winter 2013 REGION VI USAG WOMEN'S PROGRAM COMMITTEE Web page: www.region6usag.org REGIONAL CHAIRMAN KATHY OSTBERG Kathyro5@aol.com 365 Spring Street Shrewsbury, MA 01545 (508) 842-5614 (Voice / Fax) (508) 735-3149 (cell) REGIONAL TECHNICAL CHAIRMAN PATRICIA PANICHAS panichas@aol.com 9 Sherman Lane Hamden, CT 06514 (203) 248-7999 (H) (203) 392-6082 (W) (203) 392-6093 (Fax) REGIONAL JO PROG. The policy regarding athlete and coach’s apparel for the JO National and Eastern Championships has been revised. The Athlete Apparel Fund is solely supported by the funds generated from the Rising Stars Training Camps and individual donors. The following policies will impact the 2013 JO National / Eastern championships: • • • • • Every club with potential JO National / Eastern competitors is expected to provide a coach to work as a clinician for a minimum of two sessions at a Rising Stars Training camp. Any club that donates $500 prior to the Level 9/10 State Championships will be eligible for athlete and coaches apparel. Clubs that did not volunteer at a Rising Stars Training camp will be charged $150.00 per athlete. Coaches will be charged an additional fee for apparel. We have expanded the number of clinics in order to raise additional monies for the athletes in the region. We had 4 clinics this season: Rising Stars – Long Island (run by Barbara Tiess), Working Together for Nationals, Rising Star – Roots, Rising Stars – Compulsories (run by Kathy Ostberg) and Rising Stars –Working with the Coaches and Judges. Working Together for Nationals is a clinic where the gymnasts are invited by their placement at the Regional Championships and by being petitioned into the clinic by their coaches. The goal of this clinic is to have the top gymnasts work with some of the top coaches in the region (along with National clinician- Tammy Biggs) to better prepare for the Level 10 National Championships. The Rising Stars clinic is the main fundraiser for the region and all gymnasts are eligible to enroll. It is a wonderful experience for gymnasts of all levels to work with excellent coaches from across the region. We had a tremendous turn out for all of these clinics and every clinic was sold out. If coaches are interested in their athletes attending one of these great clinics, they must get their entries in as soon as the information comes out. Each entry is dated when received and I can only allow a maximum number of athletes into the clinic to allow for a safe, learning experience. A special ‘thank you’ to Kathy King (Bright Raven), Keri DeMarinis, Pam and Steve Pryor (Roots), Jen and Dan Scannel (Gym and More) and Christine Winston (Elite Gymnastics). They have opened their gyms to the hundreds of gymnasts involved with these Regional clinics. They are hardworking, professional and dedicated to the sport of gymnastics.
