The executives have completed one of two shifts as carers, support workers or working in the hospitality area. Chris How, Bethanie CEO, visited Geraldton to become a support worker for the day. Chris began the day providing personal care to a client then visited a couple where he helped with personal care, domestic assistance and supported the wife shopping. The afternoon saw Chris spending time with another client taking him for a haircut and helping with shopping. washing up!” David Harrison, Rob Spencer and Jo Christie visited Waters, Joondanna, Fields and Beachside respectively. All of the Bethanie executives have now done at least one shift as carers, support workers or working in hospitality and the insights that they have gained and shared with the rest of the executive have been invaluable. Chris said “The highlights was rekindling more enjoyment with working with clients with cognitive decline. These clients bring such a great combination of joy and challenges to working with them.” Ben Oxford, Jo Christie, Rob Spencer and David Harrison have all visited various sites across Bethanie. Ben Oxford, Chief Customer Engagement, spent the day at Riversea Mosman Park as a kitchen hand. Ben described his experience as “…amazed at the ambience of Riversea and the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff and clients. Beautiful Lengths Donation On Wednesday the 18th February, Bethanie Beachside Chaplain, Kerryn Monger, along with Bethanie Beachside Chef, Jennie Lyddieth, donated their ponytails to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths programme. This programme provides real hair wigs to women who have lost their hair through cancer treatment. Kerryn Monger was inspired to get involved after a friend cut off her ponytail. Kerryn thought “Wow! That’s fantastic. A few years ago, I worked with a resident who had lost most of her hair due to skin cancer on her head. She became very selfconscious about her appearance, and had a great collection of hats and scarves. Then I saw her delight when I took her to the Cancer Council and she was able to choose a wig. What a difference that wig made to her confidence. I hope that my hair will be able to bring some joy and confidence back to someone’s life.” Jennie, Bethanie Beachside Chef, decided to join Kerryn in memory of her grandmother who died of cancer. If you would like to donate to this great cause visit: www.beautifullengths.com.au Bethanie’s annual Purple Week was celebrated by Bethanie residents, clients and staff from February 23rd to the 1st March. Purple Week is a chance for everyone to celebrate Bethanie’s commitment to spiritual and holistic care and thank all staff who deliver and enable this care, acknowledge Bethanie’s Christian heritage, vision and mission and recognise the role of Bethanie’s Chaplaincy Team. Purple Week was embraced throughout our sites as was this year’s theme ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you’. Many events were held throughout the week including morning teas, guest speakers, purple themed quizzes and a movie screening with morning tea at Ace Cinema Rockingham. David Van Leen, Chaplaincy Coordinator, said “Purple Week is vitally important as it brings our focus back to our mission and values whilst highlighting an aspect of care that can often be overlooked. Purple Week brings all involved with Bethanie – residents and staff alike – together and increases awareness of spiritual care, our heritage and our mission.” Kerry O’Leary, Kerryn Monger, Jenni Lyddieth and Sheena Brown. The wing offers its residents a secure and peaceful environment with beautifully landscaped gardens that are designed to meet the specific needs, sensory and social experience and personal requirements of residents living with Dementia. The sensory garden is a peaceful place for relaxation. This tranquil setting and surrounds is used to help trigger memories from the residents’ lives. The beautifully landscaped garden includes a water feature, a vegetable garden and secure entry. Michelle Harris, Bethanie Dementia Consultant, said “Moving towards whole person care must start with the persons needs not the system, Riversea delivers flexible care that tackles issues like loneliness as well as medical needs… The Facility Manager, Ms Patricia Carpenter, empowers the team at Riversea to think laterally, be creative and to see the person first not their cognitive disability.” For more information on Dementia care at Bethanie visit: www.bethanie.com.au Behind the Scenes: Bethanie’s Executive Assistants Bethanie are committed to providing a warm, social and engaging environment for our residents and clients. The staff behind the scenes enabling Bethanie to achieve this include our Executive Assistants who are a group of dedicated, hardworking and organised women! Bethanie’s six assistants work with our Executive team to ensure a high level of support and organisation is provided. Maxine Alexander, Nadia McKinnon, Jane Ghizzo, Connie Schell, Linda Carter and Jacqueline Montesi are always busy behind the scenes managing calendars, meetings, preparing documents and meeting the needs of our executives and then some of all those they assist! Many of our EA’s have been with Bethanie for years experiencing the organisations milestones, special events and changes within the Aged Care industry! Maxine, EA to Bethanie CEO Chris How, has been at Bethanie for four years and says that her favourite part of working for Bethanie is “Being part of a NFP [not-for-profit] organisation that seeks to provide excellent services to residents and clients. Hopefully, through my participation as an employee of Bethanie, I can be a drop in that ocean to help make a difference.” Living Zestfully: The 2015 Dementia Seminars Throughout 2015 Bethanie will hold a series of Dementia seminars aimed at highlighting the importance of living well and the prevention of Dementia for the over 55’s. Presented by Bethanie’s Dementia Consultant, Michelle Harris, the seminars will provide the expertise and advice on how to support loved ones living with Dementia. For every person living with Dementia, their family and carers are faced with the decision of how to best care for them. Bethanie works with clients and families to ensure that we are able to provide the most suitable care package which maximises a person’s quality of life. The seminars will cover the following: • What is Dementia? • Well-being, Fulfilment and Quality of Life; • Communication; • Environment; • The value in establishing family care partnerships; • Assessment, Care Planning and Review; • The value of Advanced Care Planning. For more information on dates and locations of these seminars please visit: www.bethanie.com.au/other-services/dementia-care/ and click ‘resources’. Beachside Pressure Area Care Approach Commencing in December 2013, the PAC Clock Chart Program was introduced to Bethanie Beachside. This program is used when Braden score indicates high risk and when residents are admitted with a pre-existing pressure wound. This program is primarily used with bedbound residents with very limited mobility – either in the short-term due to an acute event, or in the longer term. The PAC Clock Chart program is a large poster sized clock with a moveable hand place above the resident’s bed. This is used in conjunction with a chart place on the bedside table for documentation and supported with multidisciplinary training efforts. Linda Carter, Connie Schell, Maxine Alexander, Jane Ghizzo and Nadia McKinnon. (Missing: Jacqueline Montesi) 7 Initially all residents on a PAC plan were placed on a two hour repositioning schedule. After review, it was clear that some residents could be managed with a four hourly schedule. Care and support staff are more mindful of the need for appropriate pressure care and the importance of repositioning. Care workers and even cleaners have been proactively raising the potential need for a PAC clock with some residents. This is an indication that all levels of the care team are more aware of the importance of pressure care. Alissa McDonnell, Clinical Nurse said, “We have had an increase in reporting of Stage 1 & 2 pressure injuries facility wide. Overall our QPS data has shown a 54% decrease in pressure injuries. This system has improved staff monitoring and also staff compliance with recommended PAC, which has in turn improved resident comfort and care outcomes which is what we are all aiming for as an industry.” Most care workers only see pressure injuries when they are dressed, so seeing large pictures of what a severe pressure injury actually looks like acted as ‘shock therapy’ to reinforce the importance of sticking to the repositioning schedule! 8 The Grassroots Falls Festival Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Centre for Nursing Research and WA Health held its first annual Grassroots Falls Festival – a falls management conference for health professionals. save themselves falling if needed. This involves finding their point of imbalance. A functional component and strengthening exercises are also incorporated. The two day event held on the 19th and 20th of February was aimed to ensure all health professionals heard about recent evidence, current research and smaller quality improvement projects that occur across the state. The rationale was to showcase how much work is being done in healthcare in Western Australia in falls prevention and management. It is also to encourage and nurture those health professionals who have never submitted an abstract or presented at a conference before. Supporting the programme has been staff and resident education, including ongoing followup of residents who fall. Bethanie Warwick’s Naomi van Bentum, Senior Physiotherapist presented the ‘Multifaceted Approach to Falls Prevention in Residential Aged Care’. Bethanie Warwick’s Better Balance Programme is based around the idea that people are smart enough to take precautions to avoid falls. Being overly cautious however, means that the automatic systems that are essential for keeping our balance when it is unexpectedly challenged are rarely activated. We lose the ability to save ourselves. Bethanie were also a sponsor at the festival and manned a stall with the help of Therapy Manager, Jenna Athans and her team. Jenna said ‘It was very relevant to have Bethanie there as we were the only aged care provider being promoted. Other stalls included ECU School of Nursing, Gadean Footwear, Hip Protectors, and ICCWA. The majority of attendees work with the elderly, many when they are admitted to hospital following a decline in health (and usually a fall) and need to be either placed in residential care, or discharged with additional services. Bethanie is now a recommendation that they are more likely to make.” The programme is designed to ‘wake up’ the automatic balance system of our residents so that they are more likely to be able to balance or 9 Outcomes continue to be monitored, however there are signs of reduced falls, including one section of the facility recording a fallfree month in October. Future plans include the incorporation of the wobble board’s into balance session and adapting the program for residents with higher care needs. 10 * T&C’s apply, see website for details.
