This event would not have been possible without the support of my fellow committee members, Hugh Mullens and John Peacock of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers and Mark Musgrave, a fellow trustee of The National Brain Appeal. Also the generosity of our patrons and supporters who have provided us with the wonderful selection of prizes for our auctions. Tonight’s event will help raise funds for two crucial programmes: The National Brain Appeal’s Operating Theatres appeal and the continued endowment of the Pewterers’ Fellow at the Institute of Neurology. More information on these projects can be found on pages 5 and 6. One in six people in the UK today suffer from a neurological disorder as many of us here tonight will know through personal experience or that of family or friends. The National Brain Appeal is a charity dedicated to funding research into and treatment of these devastating conditions and with your help we will keep The National Hospital at the forefront of developments in the field and in patient care. So please bid enthusiastically and give generously and most of all have a wonderful evening. Thank you for your support. Herchel Maclear-Jordan Trustee of The National Brain Appeal On the behalf of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, thank you for coming to Magic of the Mind and I hope you will enjoy a wonderful evening of entertainment and bid generously for the superb lots in the main and silent auctions. Thank you to the sponsors, advertisers and donors and to all those of you attending; your generosity will support the continued research of the Pewterers’ Fellow into treatments of neurological disorders including Alzheimers, Parkinsons and Epilepsy as well as the National Brain Appeal Operating Theatres. Have a great evening! Thank you! With best wishes Hugh Mullens Master The Worshipful Company of Pewterers Contents 1. 2. 5. 6. The National is one of the world’s leading centres for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with a wide range of neurological and neuromuscular conditions including multiple sclerosis (MS), brain cancer, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Prion disease, and head injury. In addition, the hospital is now the biggest neurosurgery unit in the UK and the number of patients needing complex spinal surgery is rising by 20% year on year (in part due to new surgical techniques and research resulting in more effective treatments). In order to cope with this surge in demand, a new state-of-the art operating theatre will be built alongside an upgrade of the four existing theatres. These new facilities will reduce waiting times for surgery, improve patient care and outcomes and spearhead research into new treatments. Thank you for your support. Theresa Dauncey Chief Executive, The National Brain Appeal 5 The Pewterers’ Fellow Ivan Pavlov, Institute of Neurology The Worshipful Company of Pewterers has endowed a Fellow at the Institute of Neurology since 1974. Ivan Pavlov is the 10th Fellow. Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder that affects about 50 million people worldwide (including over 500,000 people in the UK). It is characterised by excessive firing of nerve cells, which leads to the generation of an “electrical storm” in the brain, a seizure. The events leading up to a seizure are still not clear, and this makes it difficult for scientists to design effective anti-epileptic drugs. GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, is an important regulator of neuronal excitability, but its signalling mechanisms as well as the role in seizure generation are still debated. My work over the last several years at the UCL Institute of Neurology has focused on trying to understand how by manipulating inhibitory mechanisms in the brain we can keep the activity of brain networks under control. In particular, we use various in vitro and in vivo models of epilepsy and combine electrophysiological, pharmacological and computational approaches to unravel the role of specific populations of inhibitory nerve cells in restraining epileptic activity. More recently we started to employ optogenetic methods in our research. In this novel approach identified populations of nerve cells are made light-sensitive, so that their activity can be switched ‘on and off’’ by photo stimulation, thus allowing precise control over their activity during pathological discharges. This research will help us to get better understanding of the mechanisms of the disease, will identify new anti-epileptic drug targets and will help to devise new strategies in epilepsy treatment. Your support tonight will help us to achieve this. Thank you. Ivan Pavlov The Worshipful Company of Pewterers has through its 500th Anniversary Trust supported a Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Neurology for forty years. This evening’s gala dinner is a demonstration of the partnership we enjoy with the Institute of Neurology and hence it is jointly hosted with The National Brain Appeal. So all funds raised will be devoted to the same cause from research into treatments to operating theatres for those suffering a neurological disorder. The Worshipful Company of Pewterers is one of the older Livery Companies in the City of London. It is number 16 in the order of civic precedence among over a hundred companies. The Pewterers’ Company is governed by Royal Charter, the first being granted by King Edward IV in 1473. Hence, the 500th Anniversary Trust was formed in 1973 to a Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Neurology. The Worshipful Company of Pewterers is proud of its association with the Institute of Neurology and looks forward to continuing to work together in this important and topical area of medical research. 6 SUPPORTERS Roman Abramovich Tim Bolton-Carter Cynthia & Andrew Buchanan Lynne Brooks Gillian Catto Barry Clayman Piers Coleman Derek Collins Joanna David Margaret & Tony Evans Mandi Firman Baroness Flather Stephen Fletcher Peter Forbes Emilia Fox Andrew Foyle James Gazebrook Michael Gibbs Rosalind Grant-Robertson Hamilton Greenwood Mr & Mrs Leslie Hart Ian Hepburn Harry Hill Mr & Mrs Leslie Hughes Andrew Jeans Roderick Kent Jeremy King Mike & Fiona Lennard Herchel Maclear-Jordan Eleanor Mason Brown Keith and Anne Merrick Hallam & Alison Mills Patricia Morrison Paul Nicholls John Peacock-Pochin Nicki Saini Hamish Scott-Dalgleish Jimmy Tarbuck Andrew Wates Alison Webb Alan & Gilly Yarrow Ambers of Amersham Arsenal Football Club Chelsea Football Club Chiltern Valley Winery & Brewery David Lee Hancocks & Co Hotel Russell Institute of Neurology Manchester United Foundation Partners in Pewter Russell & Bromley Savills Schroders Charities Smith & Williamson Toni & Guy Utility Funding The Worshipful Company of Pewterers Ambers of Amersham is delighted to support The National Brain Appeal. To transmit information nerve cells (neurons) generate electrical signals. Each neuron has an array of different ion channels with specific characteristics, and electric currents flowing through these channels can interact with each other to either excite or inhibit the cell. Mutations in ion channel proteins often result in distinct neurological dysfunctions called channelopathies. Some forms of epilepsy, for example, may be caused by channelopathies. A Dynamic Clamp creates a real-time interface between a neuron and a computer. Using this system, we can take a piece of brain tissue and recreate the behaviour of a mutated channel in a normal neuron, or simulate a normally functioning channel in a neuron with a channelopathy. With a dynamic clamp we can also imbed a real neuron into a virtual network to study how it interacts with other cells. Until now, a ‘home built’ system has been used which is limited in its functionality and lacks the flexibility required to accurately simulate multiple ion conductances. Over half a million people in the UK suffer from epilepsy, and up to 30% of all cases are insensitive to current medications. With greater understanding of the molecular machinery underlying the behaviour of neurons, we hope to be able to identify new targets for antiepileptic drugs and to design novel approaches to suppress seizures. Please bid generously tonight and help us to raise the £7,500 needed to buy this state-of-the-art Dynamic Clamp system. Bids for this lot can be enhanced by Gift Aid. All donors will receive a certificate to acknowledge their generosity and support.
