This is proving to be a great year for all of us to sharpen our technical
skills and acquire CFE credits through SAF sponsored meetings and
symposia. Let me call to your attention some of the recent past and
upcoming events. The 42nd Annual Spring Symposium sponsored by
the University of Florida – School of Forest Resources and Conservation
and the Society of American Foresters was held May 21-23, 2013
in Gainesville, FL. The theme of the symposium was “Geo-spatial
Technologies: Solutions for Natural Resource Management.” The 1.5 day meeting presented
an array of practical applications regarding the use of GPS, satellite imagery, high resolution aerial
stereo imagery, LiDAR, IfSAR and mapping technologies in natural resource management. Many
thanks go to Pat Minogue, the organizing committee and the speakers for developing and delivering
a great program.
The Georgia SAF Division will be conducting their annual meeting on August 5-6, 2013 in Valdosta,
GA. The theme will be “Good to Great: Forest Technology in the 21st Century” (please see
Chris Rosier’s article for further information). We all look forward to your attendance at what will
prove to be an informative and insightful meeting.
The National SAF meeting will be held in Charleston, SC, October 23-27, 2013. The central theme
of this year’s meeting is: “Silviculture Matters.” The program will explore the roots and growth
of the art and science of silviculture in the United States. Speakers will not only discuss historical
trends, but also examine the developing tools and applications for managing forests for a diverse
set of objectives. This will be a great opportunity for many of us to attend a National SAF meeting
in our backyard.
Our next SESAF annual meeting will be held January 26-28, 2014 in Panama City, FL. Our theme
will continue on the overarching topic of silviculture and be titled: “12 Tons/ac/yr: The Science
of Sustainably Enhancing Southern Pine Productivity.” The speakers will cover a variety of
contemporary topics and bring us up to date on the developing science and applications toward
meeting this goal.
Finally, I would like to continue challenging our entire SESAF membership to assist in the “PLUS
ONE” recruitment campaign. Our very achievable goal this year will be to have every Chapter,
including the Student Chapters, add at least one person as a national SAF member. Let’s take the
lead and demonstrate that SAF matters. Thank you for your assistance and continued support!

Report from Council
Dave Lewis, District 10 Representative
As you read this, without a doubt the hot days of summer have moved in by now and we get that delightful
humid, sticky weather that we in the South have all come to know and love (not!). If we are not careful, momentum
gained can be lost during this time, which is something that SAF can ill afford to do. For the first time in many
years, SAF had a net gain in members in 2012. We also had revenues that exceeded expectations and made
significant progress in closing the budget deficit. In many ways, 2012 was a watershed year for the Society, as
Council voted early in the year to fund a new Brand Framework.
2013 is all about SAF’s roll out of the new Brand Promise, which is summarized as follows:
Thriving Forests. Essential Resources. A Strong Community.
We challenge landowners, decision-makers, and society at large to make choices about our forests based on
professional knowledge, leading-edge thinking and a century of practical experience. We seek viable pathways forward, balancing diverse
demands on our natural resources. We set the standard in forest management, bringing science, best practice, and the best people together
to actively shape the future of the profession.
“For the greatest good. For the greatest number. For the long run.”
Society of American Foresters. Evolving Forest Management since 1900.
These can just be words, or we can actually put these into practice – in planning and conducting our meetings, in carrying out our daily
work, and in our interactions with the public. As part of the national leadership of SAF, I can say that we are committed to working to ingrain this
Brand Promise in everything we do as a professional society. Some of you have already participated in at least one presentation of this new attempt
to focus on what we do best as an organization. As my pastor says, there are a lot of good ideas, and even some great ideas, but we are looking for
the best ideas for SAF.
Besides the new Brand Promise, another major initiative on Council for this year is developing ways to better evaluate the financial impact
of new and existing programs. Rather than voting to implement programs and then trying to figure out a way to fund them during tough economic
times, the Finance Committee is working on methods and tools to measure the financial impact of decisions BEFORE they are made. As a member
of the Finance Committee, this initiative will be much of my focus for 2012.
In addition to our gains at the national level, on the SESAF level, we also made significant progress in 2012, as we built on the great work
of my predecessors Mark Elliott, Joe Roberson, and others. Our representation on national committees has improved but still needs work. If you are
interested in serving on a national committee and feel that you are qualified for one, don’t hesitate to apply and/or to ask for my assistance. This is a
great way to serve SAF and improve as a professional forester, too.
Also in 2012, I will be trying to do a better job of getting out to some of the Chapter meetings and getting the pulse of what is going on
and what the concerns are at the local level. SAF’s chapters are where the rubber meets the road. If you haven’t been attending your local chapter
meetings, get out and participate. I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. Stay cool this summer!

Why I am a member of the Society of American Foresters

SAF is the organization for professional foresters. SAF, through its members, maintains principles and standards
for our profession, accredits educational institutions, provides educational opportunities for its members, and maintains
a grass roots organization of Chapters, State Divisions, and regional Societies like SESAF. SAF represents Forestry
nationally, providing a means to inform the public and legislative bodies about Forestry. Being a member provides the
opportunity to continue professional education and to influence the quality of the “Practice” of Forestry locally and
nationally.
Personally I have taken the opportunity to participate in and serve the profession locally and regionally.
Forty plus years of continuing education has been invaluable. The best part has been meeting, getting to know,
and serving Forestry with professionals throughout the
SESAF. This network of academic, industrial, consulting
and public professionals were always supportive. Volunteerism is alive and well in SAF. While not everyone can
volunteer every time they are asked, the important thing is
to volunteer when you can. In retrospect, the times I said
“yes” have been the most rewarding. I hope each of you
will volunteer and benefit from service to SAF and your
profession.

Alabama News

Executive Meetings, Rattlesnakes and Chapter News!
The Alabama Division Executive Committee conference calls are set for May 9, August 8 and
November 14. For more information contact 2013 Chair, Brent Shaver, at bshaver@tnc.org. On another
note, many of you may have heard of the recent interest in the eastern diamondback rattlesnake across
the Southeast. The interest was spurred by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), and other groups,
petitioning the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to list the reptile as a threatened species and
designate critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Because of federal budget restrictions FWS has not been able
to move forward with its investigation on the snake, thus the CBD is threatening a lawsuit. However, currently all funds in the
listing budget are going to review of approximately 370 species for which FWS has already been sued for under the ESA. So,
though FWS has not been able to move forward on the eastern diamondback status review, they are able to accept information on
the species. To assist in just that area the National Council for Air & Stream Improvement, Inc. (NCASI), which is a non-profit
research center that provides technical information on environmental issues for the forest products industry, is gathering data to
improve understanding of the snakes distribution and habitat associations. Upon the completion of data collection, December
31, 2013, NCASI will remove any identifying information from the survey responses and forward the information to the FWS.

In chapter news the Cahaba Chapter recently met and hosted Ray Clifton of the Alabama Forestry Association and
Alabama Loggers Council. Mr. Clifton reviewed the current Alabama Logging Ordinance and the process the AFA went through
with it. The ordinance is designed to enable counties to have notification of logging sites, the timber owner and a general Liability
Insurance policy number. It also requires the county to respond to the notification within two to four days depending upon the
access code. Ray also reviewed the current bill in the legislature concerning Green Building Classification and the certification of
the wood used in the code. The bill is meant to allow for all forest certification systems to be acceptable. To wrap up the meeting
Lee Laechelt reminded everyone that his group is meeting April 5-6 in Opelika at the Marriott Grand National. The next meeting
of the Cahaba Chapter will be June 20th at 12:00 p.m. at the RMS office. The speaker will be Mr. Henry Barclay, III on Timber

As the 63rd Georgia Division SAF Annual Meeting approaches and plans are being finalized,
I wanted to let everyone know it is my hope and goal to provide a high-quality experience for our
membership. This year’s meeting will be held August 5th – 6th at the James H. Rainwater Conference
Center in Valdosta, Ga. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Good to Great: Forest Technology in the 21st
Century,” our team has been working hard to bring in some of the top professionals in their respective
fields. Topics for this year’s meeting will include updates on the timber markets, biomass resources,
herbicides and forest pathology. There will also be discussions on advances in forest genetics and
silvicultural practices for hardwood and pine and their relationships to progressive forestry. The details of the meeting are still
being finalized, but for those wanting to bring their families while learning about forest technology - this year’s meeting will be
located minutes from “Wet and Wild Adventures Theme Park.”
On April 13th, the Georgia Division participated in the Georgia Forest Community Habitat for Humanity Build in Macon,
Ga. This build was headed up by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) State Implementation Committee and the Georgia
Forestry Association’s Emerging Leaders. As a reminder, one of the goals of this project was to demonstrate the benefits of
sustainability forestry. Not only did this project help Habitat for Humanity in building a home, but it also highlighted forestry
and the sustainable timber management cycle from harvest – to mill – to home building – to reforestation. To further support the
efforts of the forestry community, a documentary video will be made to help increase awareness of the social, environmental, and
economic role of Georgia’s sustainable forests.
Earlier this spring, the Georgia Division of the Society of American Foresters selected Marvin Griffin as the recipient of
their annual scholarship. Jason Little (2013 Chair-Elect) presented the 2013-2014 scholarship to Mr. Griffin on April 25, 2013
at the 82nd Annual Warnell School Spring Awards Banquet. Mr. Griffin will graduate in the spring of 2014 with a Bachelor of

Science in Forestry Resources, Fisheries and Wildlife. He would like to continue his education at the University of Georgia
pursuing a Masters Degree in Forestry. The Georgia Division congratulates Mr. Griffin on receiving this scholarship and
continuing his education in forestry.
Another reminder: The Georgia Division is helping to facilitate and sponsor the following summer activities:
1) Teacher Conservation Workshop - June 17-21 at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center
2) Lancaster Youth Camp - June 23-27 at FFA Camp near Covington, Ga
If you have an interest in helping to support these activities, please contact your Chapter Chair and ask for more details on these
events.
Finally, I wanted to pass along some good news regarding a Foresters’ Fund Grant that Chad Hancock (2012 GA SAF
Chair) and I have been working on this year. In February 2013, we submitted a grant application to the National SAF Office in
response to the State Bar hearing last year regarding Foresters practicing unlicensed law by use of standard form contracts. The
goal of this effort was to get reimbursed for the lawyer fees paid last year by the Georgia SAF. On April 26th, I received a very
supportive note from the National SAF office thanking our group for the effort we put into supporting the forest community along
with a full reimbursement check for our lawyer fees.

Caribbean Chapter

Recently, the Caribbean Chapter completed a tour and held a meeting at the Okaloacoochee State Forest in Felda, Florida
on March 22nd. The tour encompassed site visits and discussions regarding: plantation management in south Florida, seed tree
management, non-native invasive species, restoration with bald cypress, fuel reduction with burning, native seed collection and
recreational management.
Three weeks after the tour, the Chapter held its 6th Annual Seedling Sale at the University of South Florida (USF) Botanical
Garden’s Annual Spring Plant Festival. The funds raised at this year’s sale will be utilized as sponsorships towards various regional
Envirothon competitions around the chapter area. The Envirothon competition offers high school students an educational opportunity
in natural resources, including forestry. The sale was a success as the chapter raised just over $750. A special thank you to chapter
members and chapter friends who volunteered at the event: Erin Givens, Mary Thornhill, Kim Burch, Nan and Travis Pond, Carolyn
Cheatham-Rhodes, Eric Hoyer, and Butch Mallet.

Mountain Lakes Chapter

The Alabama SAF Mountain Lakes Chapter’s long history of public education continued in 2013 with members providing
exhibits at three Earth Day events.
Steve McEachron, of the Alabama Forestry Commission, and Colmore Christian, Alabama A&M Forestry professor,
participated in the Sixth Annual Shoals Earth Day Fest at Wilson Park in Florence. Hundreds of folks attended the event, enjoying
the cool weather and picking up forestry information from the guys at the booth.
Hays Nature Preserve in Huntsville has been the site of Earth Day programs the past eleven years and our chapter has
exhibited each time. Due to heavy rains, the thirty-plus exhibitors had to move off the banks of the Flint River and set up along the
greenway

where visitors could walk without getting wet feet. Our basic set-up of
tables and display items along with our chapter banner forms the basis
of our exhibit. Wes Stone and Brian Bradley staffed this educational
event on a beautiful Saturday. As in years past, attendees from toddlers to
grandparents stopped to look at the items. A popular favorite are the “mood
“pencils engraved with “Society of American Foresters.” The pencils
always delight children and even some adults when the colors change after
rubbing the outer surface. This year we exhausted our original supply by
giving out the last 250 pencils.

to our area were members of the Alabama A&M University Fire Dawgs, led by Daryl Lawson. Starting small fires with a drip torch
brought people over and allowed the Fire Dawgs to talk about prescribed burning. Staffing the SAF exhibit were Luben Dimov,
Scott Helms and Brian Bradley.
Earth Day events are a low-cost and effective vehicle for foresters to interact with various segments of the public. The SAF
gets exposure and an opportunity to share information with concerned citizens. An added bonus is meeting new foresters and getting
a chance to urge their participation in the SAF. This year it was a pleasure to chat with David McConnell and Lynn Larson.
Oconee Chapter

The Oconee Chapter gathered on Thursday, January 31st for Johnny’s BBQ and a presentation by Chapter member James
Johnson, Chief of Forest Management for the Georgia Forestry Commission. James spoke on two topics during his presentation with
the first one being a review of FIA data for Georgia and the trends of the state’s forest lands based on this data. Timber theft was the
second topic presented, covering the current situation in the state, the Commission’s role in this problem, and a brief comparison
with timber theft in the neighboring states of Alabama and South Carolina. The meeting was held at the USDA Forest Service office
in Gainesville with 30 members and guests attending.
A well-attended meeting was held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Flinchum’s Phoenix facility on the UGA Whitehall
Forest, jointly with the UGA SAF Student Chapter. The Student SAF Chapter, chaired by Ms. Katherine Servidio, hosted the meeting. Mr. Nathan McClure, Georgia Forestry Commission, spoke on economic impacts of forestry in Georgia, new market developments, and financial returns from reforestation. Attendance included twenty Oconee Chapter members and twelve student chapter
members.
On May 16, the Oconee Chapter met at the national headquarters of the Quality Deer Management Association in Bogart.
Executive director Brian Murphy spoke on the range of programs sponsored by QDMA across the nation related to management
of forest habitats for deer and other game animals. The meeting included a catered dinner.
Upcoming meetings for the Oconee Chapter include July 18 at Frank Riley’s farm near Hiwassee with a presentation by Dr.
Paul Arnold, manager of Young Harris College’s predator beetle lab and Dr. Jim Wentworth of the Blue Ridge Ranger District, U.S.
Forest Service. Both will provide updates on efforts to combat the effects of the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. This meeting also gives
attendees a chance to fish on the Hiwassee River, and enjoy a low country boil prepared by Larry Luckett in the outdoor setting.
Dr. Daniel Markewitz, UGA professor of forest soils, will speak on current topics of managing forest soils at UGA’s Flinchum’s Phoenix on September 19. The last meeting of the year will be on November 21, with a program and meeting location to be
determined.
Mr. Pat Hopton is serving again as the Chapter Chairperson, with Dick Rightmyer returning as Chapter Secretary-Treasurer.
Oconee Chapter meetings are all CFE qualified for one hour of Category 1 credit.

Panhandle Chapter

The Panhandle Chapter ended 2012 with
its first “Walk in the Forest” Event. The “Walk”
took place at the Blackwater River State Forest’s
Bear Lake Pavilion and trail in Santa Rosa County.
Twenty-eight local boy scouts were the audience
as volunteers from the chapter explained different aspects of forests and the practices of forestry.
The topics covered coincided with requirements
for the Boy Scout Forestry Merit Badge and all
of the attendees successfully earned their badges.
The chapter is already planning for a “Walk in the
Forest” for fall of 2013.

In 2013, the chapter welcomed the addition
of two new officers. Ron Scott became the new Secretary-Treasurer and Ian Stone became the new Chair-elect. Justin McKeithen
agreed to serve another term as Chair, since the Chair-elect position had been vacant in 2012. The officers are currently planning
events for early summer and fall of 2013.

Auburn University

Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences hosted the 56th annual Southern Forestry Conclave on March 15th and 16th,
which featured both technical and physical competitions related to forestry.
Fourteen of the southern region schools competed in eight technical and 14
physical events.
Auburn students took first place in the technical events, coming in
seventh overall. In addition, the event raised a total of $1,800 for Log-aLoad, a statewide fundraising campaign on behalf of Children’s Hospital
of Alabama sponsored by the Alabama Loggers Council and the Alabama
Russell Agnew, incoming president for the Auburn
Forestry Association.

in DBH Estimation); James Robert Dearman (2nd in Dendrology); and
hosted by Auburn this past March.

Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources

The SAF Forestry Club is one of many clubs within the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, but is compared
to none as having the richest history of involvement within the school and the state. The common outlook of today’s public on forestry is that they are nothing more than flannel shirt wearing, axe wielding lumberjacks. Even though some of this is true, the industry is making huge advancements in forest management and establishment of initiatives to create sustainable forests and Warnell is
on the leading edge of that movement.
Since the founding of the Forestry School in 1906 within the College of Agriculture; the school has strived to produce
individuals who exceed all criterion within the natural resource
fields. In 1934 the school was accredited by the Society of
American Foresters and is considered the oldest existing southern forestry school, and the alumni base shows it. The school’s
success is largely accredited to its alumni heritage. It’s because
of people like George F. Peabody, Harley Langdale, and Daniel
B. Warnell that this school has become the success it is today.
The SAF Forestry Club is designed to help students
learn more about their future careers while having fun and
socializing with people of similar interests. The SAF Forestry
Club was established in 1914 and joined the Intercollegiate
Warnell students attended the Southern Forestry Conclave 2013
Association of Foresters in 1921. The students of the Forestry
hosted by Auburn University.
Club are highly involved in the school and they solely desire
for the improvement of those programs. In 1937, the school
was threatened to lose its accreditation if certain changes weren’t met. At that time the school was underfunded and understaffed
and something had to be done. Harley Langdale and several other students decided to do something about it. They went to Atlanta
to discuss with the Governor the need to improve the forestry school. The students raised such a ruckus that it was labeled as the
“Student Revolt” and the school was granted its building and was able to acquire enough funds to pay the expenses needed to promote the school. The Forestry Club established the Forestry Club Annual in 1916 and in 1924 was renamed the “Cypress Knee.”
The Cypress Knee ceased printing in 1972 but was brought back to production in the 2012. These are just two of many examples of
students seeing a need and answering it with great motivation.
The SAF Forestry Club is currently involved with Habitat for Humanity builds with Georgia Forestry Association, assisting
companies like ArborGen do experimental plantings, and hosting numerous events for employment opportunities for students, we
also compete in the ASFC Forestry Conclave. No matter what we do the main goal is to develop students into successful professionals that will promote proper natural resource management.
