Welcome you to…
The Apple Tree Inn is a family
run eighteenth century free
house in the village of
Shoscombe, BA2 8LS
www.appletree-inn.co.uk
Bathampton has a full complement of over 20 young, and not
so young, men but we always
welcome more. We come from
all walks of life and enjoy the
camaraderie. The Morris is fun
and friendly and we take pride
in maintaining an age-old English tradition. We dance in
streets and villages, at fayres
and functions usually in the
Bath, Chippenham and Frome
areas. Often we take our tradition to foreign parts, and we
have performed in most
countries in Europe. At the end
of an evening’s dancing we
invariably end up in a pub for
music, dance and song. Come
and join us. Find us and speak
to one of the men. If necessary
our dancers will persuade your
wife or girlfriend that it’s good
for you. You really won’t regret
it.

If you are lucky you will see one
of Bathampton’s two Hobby
Horses dancing with the men.
The horse has always been a
symbol of power and virility in line
with the fertility aspects of the
Morris dance. We have a Red
Oss, which has a mind of its own
and will frighten the unwary, dogs
or tourists or cause mayhem
amongst the dancers. The new
resplendent Green Oss, covered
in strips of cloth in a traditional
African custom, is a relatively new
addition to our stable and appears at special events.

The Bathampton Morris Men are proud of their overseas links. We have
danced as a side in most countries of Continental Europe. Our most
memorable tours have been to places such as Malta, Lithuania, Hungary
and the Czech Republic. Some members have danced further afield
including the 2014 Morris Ring meeting in Adelaide, Australia. Some time
ago, one Bathampton Man established a Morris side in Barcelona.
Another Bathampton Man started a Morris side in Fiji with offshoots
spreading throughout the South Pacific
We have had exchange visits for over 30 years with the Norder
Danzkoppel in Ostfriesland, north Germany. On our Thursday evening tours
we have been joined by dancers from the USA and Canada. More locally
in most years we have our Welsh tour, usually in Wales but sometimes in
Dorset. In 2015 Bathampton joined forces with the Banchory Morris Men
from Aberdeen to tour the highlands of Scotland. The fun of promoting the
Morris world-wide adds an extra dimension to our tradition.
