At , we don`t run from responsibility. We run toward it
At
, we don’t run from
responsibility. We run toward it. Like
our Scots forebearers, we have a wide
streak of stubborn – and a plaid sense
of style. Hard work doesn’t scare us; it
strengthens us. Gives us purpose. And
inspires us to dream. Our graduates are
the proof of this simple proposition:
The world will be better for it.

Sara Kay: @almacollege I love how
Alma is truly a home away from
home! You can’t find better peers
or profs. #Plaidworks
Liz Webb: My favorite thing about
@almacollege is the fact that I’m
not just a number to them. I matter
and they want to see me succeed.
#Plaidworks
Tyler Braun: @almacollege I’ve been
able to travel the world and make
life-long friends, all while learning
about what I love. Why? Because
#PlaidWorks
This is an important question. During your four years in college,
you are going to make decisions that will influence the rest of
your life – decisions about careers and/or graduate school certainly, but also important choices about the lifestyle you will have
and the impact you want to have on your local, state, national and
world communities.
WHAT DO YOU WANT
OUT OF COLLEGE?
At Alma College, we are at our best working with students
who don’t have all the answers but love to ask the questions.
We don’t prescribe a formula for your success. Our job includes
showing you the options, helping you chart your path, and
assisting you to open the right doors. Your Alma experience
will include opportunities to put the ideas and theories that you
discuss in the classroom to work in real world settings through
internships, research fellowships, campus leadership, academic
travel or service to others. And you will make life-long friendships and amazing memories!

Michelle
Jerezano ’14
Major: International Business
Minor: French
Student Organizations: International Club,
Alpha Mu Gamma, Alma College Chorale,
French Club, Hispanic Coalition, Alpha
Gamma Delta, Posey Global Fellow
“For me, Alma was a chance to see what else
was out there in the world,” says Michelle
Jerezano, a student from Honduras.
While at Alma, Jerezano’s passport has taken
her to India, Europe and around the globe.
Jerezano is an international business major
and says the global perspective she has
gained at Alma drives her to make a positive
difference in the world. She has recently
interned with McDonalds Corporation and
Zoetis, with both roles focusing on technology and communication.
“I have developed such a strong motivation
to help those in need,” she says. “At the end
of the day, our cultures may be different, but
we’re all human. We need more people to do
good in this world, and one of those people
might as well be me.”

the skills you need to succeed and allclass conferences at crucial points in
your academic career, we’ll keep you
moving in the right direction.

study, Alma promises to help you make
it happen with both planning assistance
and up to $2,500 in financial support.
WORKING
TOGETHER
FOR YOUR
SUCCESS
Through the Alma Commitment, we will
work with you to plan a college experience that
includes all the classes necessary to complete a
degree in four years, to have practical experiences that will look great on your resume, to
include other campus opportunities that are
important to you (performing arts, athletics,
Greek life, etc.) and to prepare you not just for
your first career but for all of your careers.
THE CENTER FOR
STUDENT OPPORTUNITY
Alma’s new Center for Student Opportunity (CSO) is your go-to place for
the Alma Commitment. In the CSO,
multiple student services come together
in one space to link you with the support you need to succeed at Alma and,
ultimately, in your career.

years, Alma will cover your tuition for
another semester. That’s a promise!
Whether you plan to pursue graduate
school or jump into the job market, we’ll
help you evaluate your options and prepare you for that next step. As a graduate
you’ll benefit from our extensive, connected alumni network.

WHAT’S THE RUSH ABOUT
PICKING A MAJOR?
You may be entering college with a definite major in mind, and that’s great. But it is also okay to be undecided about
your academic program. Our experience shows that the majority of new students either haven’t decided upon a major
or they change their mind during the first year – usually because they discovered something new that is much more
interesting. First year classes should be all about exploring your options while also moving toward graduation.
Alma offers more than 40 academic programs. What sounds good to you?

Personalize your major
If you have a specific career goal and you don’t see the perfect major listed, or if you
have a variety of different interests, you can design a Program of Emphasis (POE) –
your own personalized major. With guidance from your POE advisor, you’ll craft your
program using classes from two or more majors and minors. You’ll include independent research, off-campus studies, internships or other opportunities to create experiences customized specifically for you.

DMontae Jones ’14
Major: History
Minor: Math
Writing, research, and not a whole lot of sleep. DMontae
Jones is involved in so many aspects of Alma College that
it can be hard to keep track. Jones bounced around majors until discovering his passion in a legal history course
and is now working toward becoming a law professor
– and eventually toward nomination to the Supreme
Court. Jones has no problem keeping busy on campus.
“I pretty much work everywhere on campus. The library,
the circulation desk, IT, the Center for Student Opportunity, treasurer of Sigma Chi… vice president of the
Interfraternity Council. I play the violin in orchestra. I’m
part of the Barrister Society, part of Student Congress.
I’m also part-time tech support for Apple corporate.”
Jones helped to reshape Alma College’s Honors Program
to what it is today, the Presidential Honors Program.
Jones’ Honors Day presentation focused on originalism
in the Constitution. “I argued both sides as to whether
the Constitution is supposed to be interpreted originally
as the words were, or whether that interpretation was
supposed to change over time. I looked at both sides of
the argument.”
While many students would be content with a traditional several-page thesis, Jones is focused on pushing out
a published book for his thesis project by the end of his
senior year.

OH, THE
PLACES
YOU’LL GO!
Yes – Alma College is located in the heart of Michigan’s
lower peninsula. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Alma’s
students frequently travel outside Michigan for incredible
opportunities related to their college experience.
• Each year 16% of Alma students participate in off-campus Spring Term courses, and 11% study abroad.
• Students attend (and even present!) at professional
conferences.
• Our 22 NCAA DIII athletic teams travel thoughout
the state and around the country for training and
competition.
• Alma’s instrumental and vocal ensembles also are frequent flyers:
– The Alma Choir goes on tour overseas every other
year, singing in churches, performance halls and
even castles!
– Alma’s award-winning percussion ensemble has
performed at the Annual Notre Dame University
Jazz Festival, the Ford Detroit International Jazz
Festival and the Port Townsend Jazz Festival (Port
Townsend, WA).
• Alma ranks among the top colleges and universities in
the nation for the number of students who participate
in Alternative Break service trips.
Erin Allison: @almacollege

Will Donahue ’16
Major: English
“I went from a large suburban high school to a small-town college. I’m still sort of in
shock. A year ago I was in high school, and now I’ve traveled around the nation and
the world. This campus lets you really get to know people on a personal level and
forge impactful relationships and experiences.”
In Will’s first year at Alma, he has been a participant in the school’s renowned Model
UN program and traveled to the U.S./Mexico border, Spain, France, Switzerland,
Germany, and Poland studying aspects of international human rights.
He just returned from an advocacy internship in Washington, DC, where he experienced lobbying on the Hill, hearings and briefings, as well as politics and legislation
that drive the nation’s Capitol.
“It was an immersive and exciting experience,” says Donahue. “It was fascinating to
see how skills from the Model UN played out in real world situations; cooperation,
understanding, and reaching a common ground are key examples. I am interested in
further introducing a human element to the legislative process.”
Donahue is also an active participant in Alma College’s music program, singing with
the Alma Choir, Scots on the Rocks, and Off Kilter.

Nationally competitive scholarship success
Winning prestigious, nationally competitive scholarships requires students to distinguish themselves
as exceptional, and the opportunities provided through programs like Model UN, P-Global and the
Public Affairs Institute are certainly remarkable. As of 2013, Alma College students have won:
• 24 Fulbright Scholarships – Funding for year-long research projects in foreign countries
• 8 Morris K. Udall Scholarships – Undergraduate funding for students in environmental fields
• 5 Harry S Truman Scholarships – Graduate school funding for students planning careers in
government or public service
• 2 Gates-Cambridge Scholarships – Funding for degree-seeking study at Cambridge
University (U.K.)
The Posey Global Leadership Program
P-Global funds internationally-focused student research, unpaid internships, volunteer work and
other remarkable experiences for Alma students. These projects are highly independent and fall
outside the scope of other off-campus study opportunities like Spring Term and study abroad,
making them personalized to interested students’ aspirations.
Recent P-Global destinations and projects include:
•
•
•
•
•
China, to teach English
India, to provide medical care
Kenya, to participate in HIV/AIDS education
Sierra Leone, to serve in a community hospital
Ukraine, to volunteer in an orphanage

Morgan Beeler ’14
Major: Environmental Policy
Morgan Beeler has made a point to take advantage of all the
opportunities that Alma College has to offer.
“I’ve been able to get involved in so many amazing things
here: Public Affairs Institute, P-Global, Model UN, Center
for Responsible Leadership, Kappa Iota and Alma Symphony Orchestra,” she says. “Not only are all of these experiences going to benefit me on a graduate school application, but
they have really molded me as a person. I now know who I
am and what I want to do with my life.”
The nation’s most decorated Model UN team
For 17 years and counting, the Alma College Model
United Nations team has dominated the National
Model UN Conference in New York City. In the
90-year history of the conference, Alma has walked
away with 32 “outstanding delegation” awards – the
most of any college or university in the country.
Beeler’s experiences with P-Global, Model UN, and Public
Affairs have taken her around the world, leading to encounters with world leaders and personalities, including famed
South African social rights activist Bishop Desmond Tutu.
“My environmental policy major encompasses a lot of my
future career goals,” she says. “I also have minors in public
health and political science. I’ve always been really interested in sustainability, so I would eventually like to work
in public health policy with an emphasis on environmental
health impact.”
12
Science and technology are advancing daily.
If the professionals are working at a rapid pace, why
would college students who dream of making the next
big discovery wait until junior or senior year to delve
into research and other career-defining experiences?
At Alma College, you won’t wait. When you decide to
study science or mathematics at Alma, you’ll have access
to all kinds of hands-on experiences: paid summer
research fellowships where you’ll work closely with our
expert faculty members, Spring Term courses that travel to Hawaii, Jamaica and Colorado, and other powerful experiences designed to prepare you to stay ahead in
the scientific race.
13
HEALTH MATTERS
The Alma College Integrated Health Studies Institute (IHSI) prepares you for an
amazing career in the health professions. As early as your freshman year you can
start exploring possible careers by shadowing hospital personnel or doing lab research. By your senior year, you will have had internship opportunities in a variety
of clinical settings, giving you excellent experience to list on your résumé.
Each year the IHSI brings speakers to campus from different health occupations to
discuss current topics and advancements in their fields. The IHSI also assists you
with the medical, graduate, or professional school application process, including
preparation for entrance exams. Alma’s medical school placement rates significantly
exceed the national average! For those students ready to go directly to their career of
choice, the institute provides assistance in identifying the best job opportunities.
The IHSI works for students interested in any of these fields:
Caitlin Huffman ’14
Majors: Anthropology and Spanish
Organizations: Hispanic Coalition, Kiltie Marching
Band, Anthropology Club, International Club, Phi
Sigma Sigma, Alternative Breaks
“I was approached one day by my Anthropology professor. Her question was ‘Do you want to go to Ecuador?’ I
jumped at the chance. I’ve always been interested in the
preservation of culture and indigenous peoples. The next
thing I know, I’m meeting people from all over the world
in the Amazon, learning with healers and shamans, and
researching the medicinal qualities of exotic plants.”
The Amazon provided a unique backdrop for Huffman’s learning and development. “To be honest, I didn’t
really like it at first. It was muddy, it was wet, and there
were lots of bugs. But then I realized how amazing it
was to be able to interact and learn with the people and
environment… Working with guides, making my own
food… It helped me discover how to learn and research
on my own. It was a great experience and an eye opener.”
Huffman’s adventure in the Amazon could lead to
discoveries in the realm of medicinal plant use, including
dosage, treatment, and research.
Lisa Lynn Knowles: Great to be back

Tirrea Billings ’16
Major: Environmental Science
Student Organizations: Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Phi
Omega, Competitive Cheer Team, Colleges Against
Cancer, Bible Study, Public Affairs Institute
Tirrea Billings is an explorer who’s always looking to get involved with new experiences.
“I chose to come to Alma because I was looking
for a small community with significant opportunities. I’ve been able to find those opportunities;
it’s been a great experience. I got involved in cheer
all through middle school and high school…
Here at Alma we’ve come a long way and are
headed to Nationals for the second year in a row.”
Billings has always embraced community
involvement opportunities, and has found an
outlet at Alma.
“I’ve always been involved in volunteer work and
communities… Kids Night Out, fundraisers, taking care of the elderly… With Colleges Against
Cancer we ‘re hitting bigger results than ever.”
What’s next for Billings?
“Right now I’m majoring in Environmental
Science with a New Media Studies minor. I’d
like to begin work with nature documentaries.
Discovery Channel, National Geographic, things
like that. Eventually I’d like to work on projects

We are the Scots and proud of it! (We even have an official registered tartan!)
Embracing our Scottish heritage comes naturally. As you drive into the town of
Alma, you’ll see a sign that says Scotland, U.S.A. We offer one of the best Highland Arts programs in the country, drawing students from across the continent.
Our instructors are U.S. and world champions in their fields and love sharing
their passion for the Highland Arts with their students.
How else do we show our Scottish pride?
• Our bagpipers are part of every formal college ceremony throughout the
school year – from welcoming convocation through commencement. The
Alma College Pipe Band has a full performance and competition schedule.
• Our Kiltie Dancers astound audiences with their grace and skill. We offer
classes in Highland dance technique and lessons for the novice to the expert.
• Our entire marching band is outfitted in kilts.
• Our mascot, Scotty, revs up the crowd at athletic events and often comments on campus life through his Facebook page (follow him at facebook.

• The Alma College choir sings the most amazing version of Loch Lomond. It
will give you goosebumps!
• The Alma Highland Festival is held annually on the college campus. Have
you ever seen a caber toss?
• We have our own ice cream flavor! Enjoy a scoop (or three) of delicious
Scottish Pride ice cream at College Corner Coffee and Books.

LEAD PURPOSEFULLY.
SERVE GENEROUSLY.
To us, these concepts are intertwined threads woven throughout the fabric of Alma College.
Our students become leaders because they care enough to serve others. Through service they
develop powerful leadership skills. They go on to achieve personal and professional success,
positively impacting their communities and leading the way in their careers. It’s not just a
small number of students who develop key leadership skills by serving others; service is a
campus-wide commitment at Alma College.
Taylor Tripp ’15
Major: Integrated Physiology and Health Science
Organizations: Alpha Xi Delta, Responsible Leadership Institute, Health Studies
Institute, UHPAC, Alternative Breaks, First Generation Student Services
Integrated physiology and health science junior Taylor Tripp exemplifies
community, caring, and commitment.
“You know it’s funny, my original application to Alma came about because it was the first on my guidance counselor’s alphabetical list… But
now it’s truly become my family,” says Tripp. “My professors have been
behind me 100% of the way. I stay here year round and when I go home
that’s now like my second family. It’s been an incredible experience.”
Tripp is philanthropy chair for Alpha Xi Delta, which has a partnership
with Autism Speaks. “We do a lot within the community to help kids
with autism. We do play days where we go to the community health
center and play with kids who have autism. This gives us a hands-on
experience that I think is really valuable,” says Tripp. “I’m involved in
the community aspect with almost all of my organizations.”
Tripp’s dedication to community involvement is echoed in her current
career path. “I switched from pre-med to pre-nursing, so I’ll be joining
an accelerated nursing program after Alma,” says Tripp. “Eventually I’m
going to work up to being a nurse practitioner working in either geriatrics or pediatrics… I really gravitate toward both ends of the spectrum.”
Almost 90% of Alma students
take service learning courses.
Students in a First Year Seminar called Wisdom:
Cool Minds, Warm Hearts visited with an elder at
Masonic Pathways each week. All service learning
courses include a volunteerism component.
