2014 ANNUAL REPORT Programs Education Community Waterfront PREPARING OUR NEXT GENERATION NAVIGATING THE FUTURE Student Growth Mission 7,000 The mission of Maritime Gloucester is to inspire students and visitors to value marine science, maritime heritage and environmental stewardship through hands-on education and experiences. 6,000 5,000 4,000 This mission is fulfilled by emphasizing in our programs and services the following core values: 3,000 2,000 Inspiring Discovery 1,000 0 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 Exploring Science Embracing History Living Stewardship Students Letter from Board Chair and Executive Director 5,000+ students 50,000+ visitors Connecting generations to the ocean is our core mission. It starts here on this waterfront campus by telling both the story of this site, and the activities that have taken place here to support a working waterfront and maritime economy. The connection is strengthened in our aquarium, the Gorton’s Seafoods Gallery, multi-use classroom, the digital microscope laboratory, the Stellwagen exhibit and the Boathouse where students are engaged in hands-on activities designed to teach maritime heritage and marine sciences. The experience on the piers and wharves and sailing on the Schooner Ardelle in and around Gloucester Harbor serves to connect students and visitors to local history, ecology and the ocean beyond. There is a future here on the working waterfront, and Maritime Gloucester is proudly committed to telling that story and sharing that vision. This year’s report highlights some of our activities to prepare the next generation for a life with the sea. We welcome your review, feedback and involvement. 54,000+ minutes of gig rowing 30+ partner organizations Geoffrey Richon, Chair Thomas Balf, Executive Director PROGRAMS Think Tank In June, Maritime Gloucester unveiled Think Tank, an interactive fisheries exhibit. With a generous technology grant from the Applied Materials Community Foundation, Maritime Gloucester purchased a large, interactive, multi-touch table equipped with an integrated PC that supports animation, video, audio, photographic data and educational games. Community members, visitors and students play an interactive, animated game on the table in which they seek to influence the size of a fishery population based on a variety of factors. Maritime Gloucester worked with community members, fishermen, fisheries managers, ocean scientists, and design professionals from Fable Vision to develop the exhibit. C E L E B R AT E O U R H E R I TA G E Sustainable Fisheries Dinner To raise awareness on the issue of underutilized fisheries, Maritime Gloucester held a Sustainable Fisheries Dinner at local restaurant, Latitude 43. The restaurant’s parent company, Serenitee Restaurant Group, and Turner’s Seafood sponsored the event. The evening was sold out with happy attendees dining on deliciously prepared monkfish and skate wings, the two featured species. Traditional Music MG Talks Maritime Gloucester held its MG Talks series in February and March, and in April hosted the lecture series of the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Large Pelagics Research Center. Themes explored during the MG Talks included schooners and climate change. The well attended series was supported through generous contributions from Cape Ann Savings Bank and Mill River Consulting. Well-known musician Marla Fibish performed a concert of mandolin music in the Gorton’s Seafoods Gallery on a well attended evening in June. The following morning Ms. Fibish held a mandolin workshop in the Dory Shop. Connecting with Schooners Maritime Heritage Day proved to be a highlight of the summer season. Thousands of Schooner Festival visitors filled the site from Schooner Way down to the pier. We had a record number of visitors, traditional artisans selling and demonstrating their craft, community groups engaging families in exciting programs, and schooners tied to the end of the pier, including the Schooner Adventure who welcomed visitors on deck. Music enjoyed by all was provided by Meridian, a local folk duo. Maritime Gloucester Film Nights Maritime Gloucester entered into a community partnership with the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The first film screened was Maidentrip, a documentary telling the story of a teenage girl’s solo sail around the globe. This partnership will continue next year. EDUCATION Cape Ann Ocean Explorers The Ocean Explorers program provides hands-on science enrichment to 64 elementary classrooms, serving over 1,500 students in Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester/Essex schools. This program connects students to their local marine habitats and encourages them to develop 21st century science skills. The program is made possible by a three-year NOAA B-WET grant in conjunction with the support of the McCarthy Family Foundation, Rockport Education Foundation, Spaulding Trust, the Amelia Peabody Foundation and program support donations from our gala. Coastal Explorers Our Coastal Explorers summer programs welcomed students of all ages. Our elementary participants spent mornings aboard the Schooner Ardelle and afternoons exploring in our labs and aquarium. Our Middle and High School participants explored the coast of the North Shore aboard the Ardelle while learning to sail and navigate. Highlights included climbing the North Tower at Thacher’s Island, seal watching at the Dry Salvages, whale watching on Tillies and circumnavigating the world (that’s around Cape Ann to the non-locals). Summer Internships We added a College Internship program to our successful High School Summer Internship Program, which has been offered for a decade. The college interns had a choice of two different tracks: Marine Science Education or Citizen Science Invasive Species Monitoring. More than ten college students participated in the program, with more signing up for fall and winter semester projects. Our education interns helped develop and teach summer programs while our Citizen Science interns collected invasive species data from harbor sampling locations. Field Trips We served over 5,000 students from 80+ schools and groups Students ranged in age from PreK to College Demand for field trips was high. We had 50 field trips in 40 available school days in May and June Biggest field trip day included kids on our site at one time 150+ “ SPOTLIGHT ON Rebecca Visnick Rebecca Visnick is equally comfortable with a paintbrush or a Giant Pacific Octopus. We take some credit for that. She volunteered in the Maritime Gloucester aquarium throughout high school and college, and joined our summer education staff in 2012. She is currently finishing up her marine science degree at Alaska Pacific University and plans to return to Maritime Gloucester to the delight of her Cape Ann elementary students. As a talented artist and scientist, Rebecca has spearheaded programs and classes that integrate marine science and art. Several of her large scale murals brighten our classrooms, labs and aquarium. “Maritime Gloucester’s Coastal Explorers has been the best part of my summers for the last two years! The Pinky Ardelle, Captain Harold, Mary Kay, and Curtis have taught me so many things about Gloucester, the working harbor, marine life, and fun sea shanties. I used some of my knowledge this year in my biology class and my teacher was impressed. I am so lucky to have been involved and I look forward to many more summers in Gloucester and time spent at the maritime museum.” —Jack Mannke, 15 years-old, Coastal Explorers participant, Glen Mills, PA N E W A N D E XC I T I N G P R O G R A M S High School Students Lead Research Project Throughout the winter and spring, ten seniors in John Wigglesworth’s Oceans and Climate Class at the Waring School visited regularly to gather invasive species monitoring data using the settling plates at our docks. Students entered their data into an online database and conducted analysis back in their classroom. We are looking forward to this partnership again next year. New Wet Lab What’s a wet lab? For us, it’s a place where we analyze water samples, teach students basic laboratory techniques and maintain specimens year-round. This new space has been used nearly every day this spring and summer! Some of our artistic staff members led a mural project in the space this summer to make it more interesting and inviting. Thanks for the support from the Amelia Peabody Foundation! Pathways for Children Early Childhood STEM We piloted a new early childhood STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) program in conjunction with eight pre-school classes from Pathways for Children. More than 250 children benefitted from this program. Each class visited Maritime Gloucester three times this spring and participated in programs including: engineering fishing gear, exploring buoyancy through building recycled boats, and investigating the relationship of form and function in sea creatures. Both organizations—and all the students— agreed it was a successful program. COMMUNITY BUILDING COLLABORATION Climate Change Workshop In May, Maritime Gloucester hosted a community workshop on coastal climate change. Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management presented engaging presentations on shoreline geology and sea level rise after which the 60 participants engaged in table discussions facilitated by civic leaders and volunteers. Marine Debris Talk and Clean-Up Around the Harbor Maritime Gloucester led the first Marine Debris Cleanup of Gloucester Harbor collaborating with Cape Ann non-profits, Cultural Districts, students and community volunteers to conduct clean-ups and inventory sites across the harbor. The cleanup kicked off with an informative presentation by Rachael Miller of the Rozalia Project. The Sea is All About Us and the Sarah Fraser Robbins Award In June, Maritime Gloucester hosted a ceremony to unveil the new edition of The Sea Is All About Us: A Guide to Marine Environments of Cape Ann and Other Northern New England Waters. Originally published in 1973, the Cape Ann guide was written by Sarah Fraser Robbins and Clarice Yentsch, Ph.D. To mark this great occasion, Maritime Gloucester established the Sarah Fraser Robbins Environmental Award to recognize an individual or group of individuals who have made significant contributions to the study or protection of the seashore populations and the general ecology of Cape Ann and other northern New England waters. This year’s recipient was Dr. Molly Lutcavage Director of the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Large Pelagics Research Center. Reinvigorated Volunteer Program Maritime Gloucester’s newly invigorated volunteer program has been fortunate to have active volunteers helping on archiving, events, docent led tours, programming, aquarium staffing, and general maintenance. Sea Scouts also support Maritime Gloucester by volunteering and assisting at events throughout the year. “ Maritime Gloucester is exactly as it sounds: a hub and sanctuary of the biology and culture of Gloucester Harbor throughout the years. I enjoyed having meaningful conversations with visitors about biology, conservation, and climate change, while listening to their stories and sharing some of my own. I believe that Maritime Gloucester is an invaluable contribution to the community due to its immersive and all-inclusive educational style towards a subject so vital to the city. —Emma Ottenheimer, College Intern ” WATERFRONT Marine Railway Sometimes you need to invest in the past to invest in the future. So it was that we rebuilt the cradle and installed decking to our 1849 historic railway to enable its use going forward. We look forward to hauling historic schooners “on the ways” and are actively pursuing vessel restoration projects. Schooner Adventure Maritime Gloucester was proud to welcome the Schooner Adventure to our dock this past summer. Gloucester’s flagship vessel supported our efforts to attract visitors and share stories from a bygone era. We look forward to future collaborations with them as both organizations retain their separate identities but explore opportunities to work together. New Outdoor Exhibits Sea Scouts This past year we completed the installation of the magnificent Compass Rose sculpture at the entrance of the building, developed exhibits for the historic Mill Building and completed outdoor informational kiosks that tell the story of this site and the fishing community—then and now. Our Sea Scouts “Ship” grew to approximately 15 kids—boys and girls—during the summer. They enjoyed learning seamanship skills from Captain Amanda Madeira, working on boats, rowing dories and sailing the 32’ Endeavor during the summer. Thanks to our adult volunteers for their support for this evolving program. Schooner Ardelle The Ardelle is a workhorse for us. She is used as our educational platform for school (and adult) field trips to Gloucester Harbor and our vessel for summer programs involving trips that extend our reach to the local islands and all the way out to Stellwagen Bank. Harold Burnham, the owner and skipper of the Ardelle, offers public and charter sails. Rowing Program Our gig rowing program continues to grow. We surpassed 100 rowers this past year. These intrepid rowers can be seen in one of three Cornish Gig Pilot boats, as well as the dories or a newly donated sliding seat rowing boat. They could be seen rowing on the harbor every single day. With over 900 hours on the water this summer, that’s a lot of rows. 12 Vessels in Port 330 Ardelle Trips 80 ribs replaced on the pinky Watermark FINANCIAL SUMMARY income expense Income Waterfront/Facilities 9% Expense Waterfront/Facilities 14% Education 23% Donations/ Restricted Gifts 41% Education 27% Programs/Events 27% Education $168,185 Programs/Events $201,550 Donations/Restricted Gifts $306,857 Waterfront Total $69,664 $746,256 Development 18% Programs/Events 41% Development $185,325 Education $278,075 Programs/Events $124,621 Waterfront/Facilities Total $98,692 $686,713 The financial information presented covers the period July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014.This is not a complete financial statement. Her experience included cataloging photos, archiving artifacts and interpreting marine life in the touch tanks. Special moments for Sally occurred in the aquarium.“It was moving to see a child’s face light up as they held a sea star, or studied a lobster up close. I enjoyed participating in children’s learning about marine life, and to spark their curiosity about it”. Through her volunteer experience, Sally learned of Maritime Gloucester’s impact in schools, as well as its role in environmental issues and maritime heritage. “I have appreciated the way Maritime Gloucester has invited me to think about fishing history, as well as some of the challenges the world’s oceans face. I think Maritime Gloucester has opened up important conversations about changes to our area shoreline, and inspired me to think about what I can do to help.” The volunteer program has been a rewarding experience for Sally. “I am so grateful for the chance to be involved at Maritime Gloucester”. Being a volunteer has opened up a whole new world of learning, it’s led to many new friendships, and even to rowing on Gloucester harbor!” Becky Dean James Delamater Pamela & Alexander Delis Vicki Diez-Canseco Peggy Dillon Melissa Dimond & Gretchen Putnam Maureen Dion Anna DiPerna David Dobson Peter & Susie Dorsey Christopher Doucette Claire Doucette Douglas Doucette Frederick & Debra Doucette John Doucette Julia Doucette Tim Doucette Whitney Doucette Frederick & Beryl Douglas Edward Downing Nancy Dudley Bill & Jean Dugan John Dugger & Suzyn Ornstein Craig Dulong & Sash Ludwig MEMBERS JP & Andrea Dunn William & Barbara Dyer Ross Eastman Ken & Anne Ehrlich Albert Ellis & AnneSeymour St. John John Ellis Tom & Kay Ellis Els-Torri Family Ken & Alice Erickson Sarah Robbins Evans Erica Everett Lily Eynon Janelle Fairbrother Frank Faralma & Betsy Eck June Farrell & Mary Marino Peter Feinstein & Miriam Weinstein Bill & Lyn Fenollosa Donna Field Newton Fink & Bonnie Stafford Wendy Fitting Jennifer Flaherty Newell Flather Ron & Ellie Fleet Garth & Liz Fletcher William Fonvielle & Carole Lynn Sharoff Gus Foote Tom Fox & Dale Blank Mary Francis Audrey Fraser Phyllis Freeman Jennifer Fremont Alden & Elizabeth French Dorothy French Susan Frey Lynne Frick Susan Frisbee Steve & Katy Fritch Alan Galbraith Justin Gale & Kari Gunn Brandy Gardner David & Alice Gardner Billie-Jo Gauley Joe George Terry George Greg Gibson & Ann Marie Crotty Bob Gillis & Pixie Harrington Ronald & Jane Gillis Kathryn Glenn Neil Glickstein & Barbara Kelley Beth Goldberg Seth Goldfine Curtis Gollrad & Dale Brown Sargent & Susan Goodchild Steve & Nina Goodick Angus & Mya Goolsby Emily Gordon Carmine Gorga Michael & Karen Gorton Brian & Lauren Grace Peter & Billie Ann Greeke Daniel Greenbaum & Deborah Cramer William Greenbaum Joyce Griffin Annette Grimes Geo & Sally Grimes Paul Gross & Cornelia Tenney Tony Gross & Abbie Lundberg Steven Grossman Guevara-DePiero Family Carl & Judy Gustin Jim Gutstadt & Nancy Goodman Paul Hackett & Jessica Schwarzenbach Christopher Hadley & Scott Smith Laurie Hagar Thomas & Barbara Hale Douglas & Susan Hall Stephen Hall & Beth Swan Vicki Halmen Tom & Joy Halsted William Hanna Michael Haran John Harrington & Deborah Marston Jonathan & Margaret Harvey Rose Hausman Dina Hazan William Hellmuth Robert Henriques & Jane Singer Heidi Henson Hazel Hewitt Ellen Higgins Peter Higgins & Jen Fahey Bob & Diane Hildreth George Hill Eric & Hilarie Holdsworth Debe Holland Thomas & Martha Hooper Joel Horvitz Tom & Caroline Hovey Eleanor Hoy Stephen Hulbert Bonnie Hyde Greg Iacono Rob & Pam Irwin Richard Isaacs Joel & Florrie Ives Krista Jakes Wilber & Janet James Robert & Patricia Jedrey Stephen & Deborah Jencks Gail Jenner Ann Johnson Charles Johnson Ellen Johnson Edward & Kaye Lynn Johnson-Shoucair Anstiss Jones Mark & Jennifer Joseph John Judd Paul & Sarah Judge Robert & Patricia Kelliher Jack Kelly Susan Kelly Julie Kent Nick & Lisa Kent Steve Kent & Nancy Sullivan Malcolm Kerstein & Patricia Murphy Amanda Kesterson Kishida Family Chris Klem & Susan Klem-Morser Kneisel Family Joe & Polly Knowles John Knowlton Peter & Roberta Kovner Marty Krugman James & Elizabeth Kubik Peter Kuttner Ann Lafferty Philip & Julie Lake Stephen & Janet Langer Leonardo & Susan LaRosa Elizabeth Lasek Bob & Alicen Latassa Charles & Ellen Laughton Peter Lawrence John & Martha Lazarus Michael Lehman & Jan McClure Lysa Leland Bob & Bobbi Lemay Carey Lengieza Tony Lentz Leonard & Mary Jane Letendre Scott & Lisa LeVasseur Ellen Levine Ed & Michael Leviseur Monty Lewis & Camilla MacFadyen Sigrid Lindo Karen L’Italien Paul & Jackie Littlefield Joan Lockhart Lucy Lockwood Lorraine Louanis Lufkin Family Sheila Lummis Paul & Christine Lundberg Maria Lundstrom Marty & Barbara Luster Jane Lyman Carlton Macauley Jennifer MacCuish J.
