There are one hundred and six students total, with the number of boys slightly higher than the number of girls: 59 to 47. The elected student senate for the freshman class consists of Alyssa Zidek as president, Miles Flowers as vice president, Sara Lehman as secretary, and Ricky Foster as treasurer. Freshman year is said to be a big change, but it is obvious that EC has a very solid family atmosphere and gladly offers support to the new additions. Here are some tips from upper classmen to help the class of 2015 their freshman year: ―I know everyone says this, but they're not lying when people say to make high school the best. I'm already a junior and it feels like yesterday I was at freshman orientation. High school flies by so my advice is to be weird, be nerdy, try new sports, and do whatever to make the four years count!‖ – Junior, Jenna O‘Dell ―Be yourself, get good grades, perform your finest in athletic events if you play any, stay involved in the community, and build up a good reputation around your peers. The desire to succeed is an inherent motivation instilled from birth. All are drawn to excel. Even infants are compelled to learn, to speak, to walk, to get the most out of life. There is a sense of purpose, though often not clearly defined, within the heart of every person. At Elyria Catholic, where excellence is a foundational pillar of the entire community, Principal Amy Butler recently announced the school theme for 2011-2012. As students walk through the hall, they may notice the new theme banner, which reads, ―The purpose of life is to find your life‘s purpose.‖ This statement challenges all who pass through the doors of Elyria Catholic, including Panther athletes, students, and administrators, to raise their expectations for themselves. It sets a higher standard of achievement, and encourages students to make their dreams come true. However, it is also important to realize the fact that it is not only that which a person has done in life that matters, but instead it is the degree of excellence to which he or she does it. Though many students may be somewhat unsure of their goals for the future, they may find comfort in the idea that they do not entirely have to decide their own fate. With the guidance of God, and surrounded by a supportive community, they will be able to determine their purpose in life. In fact, purpose is not something to be sought; Through good choices and 1, 5 service to God, purpose is a gift that will find its place in a person‘s life. Write to us! What is God calling you to do this year? Your story could be featured in the next issue of The Challenge. V O L UM E 6 2 I S S UE 1 P A G E 2 E D IT O R I AL / O P I N IO N Looking Back on September 11th Ben Grace ‗14 T en years ago, a great tragedy struck our nation. It was an event powerful enough to permanently mark a place in each of our memories, despite being at most seven years old at the time for most EC students. Most remember exactly where they were and what they were doing at the time they heard the news. I— like so many—was in school, constantly being assured that I was safe. All I knew was that it was a sad day, many people died in a building I had never heard of, and that Pennies For Your Thoughts I wish it was Jersday.—Scarpelli school was being let out early. My young mind was unable to appreciate the three thousand victims‘ lives, or the motivations of the terrorists, or how the nation would react. Today I understand how horrid the events of that day were, and how we bounced back. We are in the process of constructing the World Trade Center anew, and we have captured a sizeable portion of those responsible for the attack. Today, I can remember mournfully and look hopefully to the future alongside the rest of our nation. Perhaps a trip to Soak City at Cedar Point or for a real adventure, did you open up a fire hydrant to splash around in? If you were not into those two, water sports, going to a movie, the mall, or going to an ice cream shop was a great escape from the heat. There was no need to go south for a vacation; we had all the warmth right here in our own backyard. The great thing about summer is being able to sleep in late. Since it stays light out for so long you still Maggie D‘Amico ‗12 have plenty of time to make s‘mores, have bon-fires, or just hang out with friends. Road trips are also a fun way to have a change of scenery. Summer is also a good opportunity to visit colleges to pick out your home away from home after your senior year. This summer was not all fun and games, with the hot and dry weather in Texas and Arizona, there were many wild fires, claiming many homes. There were also dust storms in Arizona, which most people would never have thought would ever happen again. Whatever kind of summer you had say ―good-bye to summer and hello autumn!‖ How are you spending your free time this fall? Each year new members join a family, just as this year the school welcomes five new coaches to the family of Elyria Catholic High School. As a school community, we welcome JV Girls‘ Soccer coach Mr. Ray Cunningham, Golf and Hockey coach Mr. Rick Montgomery, Volleyball coach Ms. Jennifer Lee, Tennis coach Ms. Marge Mueller, and last but not least Football coach Mr. Michael Polevacek. When talking to Coach Cunningham, he praised his JV girls, commenting on how they‘ve far exceeded his expectations for the season. Thoroughly enjoying this year, Cunningham couldn‘t help but to extend a huge thank you to Mr. Wisnor, Mrs. Butler, and everyone else involved that has supported him in coming to EC. Although he is not a graduate of Elyria Catholic, Mr. Cunningham had wanted to attend the school but didn‘t because of the lack of a soccer program when he was in high school. ―I‘m proud to be a Panther,‖ he says, ―I‘ve always wanted to be one and now I can be.‖ KEEPING THE EC students also welcome golf and hockey coach Mr. Rick Montgomery. ―I‘ve been having a really good time with a good group,‖ Montgomery says. ―It‘s good to have a good coach, but it‘s also good to have kids that want to practice.‖ The golf team didn‘t let Coach Montgomery down, improving throughout the season. This year, Montgomery is starting golf practice early in the offseason to improve even more for next year. Coach Montgomery‘s next plan? Hockey. EC‘s new volleyball coach, Ms. Jennifer Lee says―I‘ve been enjoying myself immensely.‖ Coach Lee praises the girls for their hard work and success. The conditioning has been paying off! Next Tuesday night the girls face Bay Village. Coach Lee‘s goal is for the girls to tie with Bay for 1st place in the west Shore Conference. Surely the school can look forward to a great rest of the season from these Lady Panthers! Tennis team coach Marge Mueller had a ―great experience‖ this year. The girls didn‘t win as many games as they had hoped, but Mueller is proud of the girls regardless. She is proud of the girls for their hard work and their strong work ethic throughout the season. Coach Mueller is interested in returning next year and hopefully the school will see her again. Last, but certainly not least, Coach Michael Polevacik has taken over as head football coach this year. His theme for the team this year, ―All we have is all we need‖ is keeping the young men playing hard in the new, tougher Westshore Conference. ―There was a feeling-out process of our opponents this year, ―states Coach Polo of the new conference, ―Both [we and] our opponents have to get used to game planning for each other and our styles of play. We are obviously disappointed with the results of some of the big games this year, but we feel we can rebound and be more aware of our opponents in the conference next season.‖ The EC family certainly looks forward to strong finish for all sports teams this 2011 season. BALL ROLLIN' John Gross ‗12 O n Saturday, September 10th, the Elyria Catholic soccer program pulled of an amazing feat. Each soccer team proceeded to beat Elyria High School for the Elyria Cup. Boys Varsity won a hard battle by a score of 5-2. "They (Elyria High) were skilled, but we‘re pretty good too. We just kept fighting and pulled away with the win," said senior forward David Elwer. Coach Wisnor, in response to his feelings about the cup this year said, "I'm proud that the seniors maintained the cup, and kept this streak alive. [we] really embodied team spirit." When asked about the possibility of going to state, Elwer replied, "That's our goal, I mean the state finals is the highest you can go. Getting there won't be easy, but we'll keep working our hardest to get there." The girls also outplayed their competitors for record back to back wins in the Elyria Cup game in a 3-0 sweep. When people saw Girls Varsity play, some common questions were, "What makes them so good?" or "How do they pull this off year after year?" Marissa Ternes gave one possible answer: "We have a lot of talent, and we always train really hard." The young guns also got their share in the victories, with JV Girls winning 3-0, and the JV boys winning 4-1. In addition to being a great competition for the players, the Elyria Cup is great fun for fans as well. "It was really fun! The crowd got into the game, and I had a great time," said senior Brandon Hikade. Above: The varsity soccer team celebrates their win over Elyria High after the annual Elyria Cup game. For diehard fans of the books and the movies (or possibly just the movies), this was simultaneously a joyous and a sad experience. Overall, it was quite emotional. The actual book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is a tremendous 759 pages—certainly MUSIC NEWS Unbroken – Demi Lovato fter taking a hiatus to focus on her emotional and mental well-being, Demi Lovato is back with a new album and a new sound. Her previous two albums (―Don‘t Forget‖, 2008; ―Here We Go Again‖, 2009) follow a pop/ rock sound, but Unbroken has a more dance-pop and R&B influence, similar to Rihanna and Keri Hilson. The tracklisting is spectacular (featuring cameos from various popular singers, such as Timbaland and Jason Derulo), and carries as much emotional backing as its upbeat feeling, slightly reminiscent of Christina Aguilera‘s Stripped. Whether or not a previous fan of Lovato, Unbroken is a great addition t o any pop lover‘s music collection. A The Suburbs (Deluxe Version) – Arcade Fire n 2010, Quebec-based Indie Rock band Arcade Fire released their Grammy-winning third album The Suburbs, and it very quickly became a fan favorite. Recently, a deluxe edition of the album has been released, featuring two new tracks, two behind-the-scenes videos, and the music video for the song ―The Suburbs‖. If you are a fan of the band, or if you I a feat for screenwriters to transform into a suitable-length film. However, despite the pressures and the challenges, the conclusion to the epic story was, in fact, magical. The film releases on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 11. The Help athryn Stockett‘s best -selling novel The Help was transformed into a film that was released this summer. For those unfamiliar with the book, it is an inspiring story about the South in the 1960‘s—a K time when African-Americans worked as maids for prominent white families—and the ability to rise above repressing dominance. The film starred popular actress Emma Stone (―Easy A‖, ―Crazy Stupid Love‖) as ―Skeeter‖, an ambitious young woman who decides to pen an innovative novel from the viewpoint of ―the help.‖ Packed with drama, humor, and heartfelt moments, it is a story that one is sure to not soon forget. haven‘t before heard of them, The Suburbs is a great discovery. Odd. The band has released some incredible singles in the past few months, including this summer‘s, ―Ready To Go‖ and, most recently, ―Let‘s Kill Tonight.‖ Check out the incredible—and theatrical, as always—music videos for both of the songs, as well as the other single from the album, ―The Ballad of Mona Lisa‖. Evanescence Has What You Want (Finally) aithful Evanescence fans have been pining for the group‘s third album for years. At long last—nearly five years since their last release, 2007‘s The Open Door— Evanescence‘s new self-titled album has finally arrived. Their leading single, ―What You Want‖, has been available on iTunes since August. Hopefully, it will see some radio-play soon! Ready to Go With Panic! At the Disco fter Panic! split in 2009, many fans questioned the band members‘ next moves. But fortunately, two of the four members—frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith—made the bold decision to carry on the band‘s name as a duo. Panic! At the Disco released their Kerli‘s Army of Love or anyone who isn‘t familiar with the singer, Kerli is a unique pop artist from a small town in Estonia who made her musical debut in 2008 with her album, Love Is Dead. The album offered the lead single, ―Walking On Air‖. Being a lifelong fan of Tim Burton, Kerli personally asked him to record a song for 2010‘s ―Alice In Wonderland‖ soundtrack, Almost Alice. Kerli has gained some popularity from her song from the soundtrack, ―Tea Party‖, as well as helping to write songs for stars such as Selena Gomez (―Ghost of You‖) and Demi Lovato (―Skyscraper.‖) Kerli is expected to release a new album sometime in late 2011 or early 2012 with the lead single, ―Army of Love‖. She became very close to the 28 year old daughter, Amanda. Mrs. C continued her friendship with Amanda and her family through the summer where she got to bond with them and become even closer. ―They call me family now,‖ said Mrs. C. During the summer Mrs. C spent every Saturday at the farm with her friends. Summer break in Amish tradition is not the same as the traditional summer break that people in the city practice. Instead of looking at sum- mer break as a time to relax, the Amish children celebrate by doing chores like picking corn and doing other chores during their time off. Mrs. C got to help her friends with these chores, including fetching eggs, doing dishes, scrubbing the porches, and mopping the floors. But summer wasn‘t just chores for Mrs. C and her friends; they did other traditional activities like picking strawberries. Mrs. C also learned how to make jam from scratch, ―It only took 30 minutes,‖ Mrs. C said of the jam making process.
