Member FDIC Winter 2014 As I’m sure you are aware, the economy is constantly changing due to economic and political factors. In rural Iowa, we are experiencing some changes. Corn and soybean prices have dropped significantly from the highs last year, creating economic challenges for some of our grain producers. At the same time, livestock prices are at all time highs. Depending on your situation, you may be facing either a large increase or decrease in income. Our current economic situation can be described as the “Triple 3” – $3.00 corn, $3.00 calves, and a 3.25% prime interest rate. We’ve had the greatest corn/soybean grain cycle of above average prices due the help of the ethanol boom, drought in the Corn Belt, and increased exports. However, corn prices have fallen to $3.00$3.75, below the cost of production for many operations. This was the result of a loss of export sales due to the high grain prices the last few years and projected record yields. The best cure for low prices is always low prices. We have seen a nice fall rally in the grain markets. Be sure to have a marketing plan in place and the discipline to take advantage of these opportunities. Remember, now that fall crop insurance prices are set, we no longer have price protection on 2014 crop that is not priced. The decisions we make now will be determining factors for our future success. To try and protect ourselves, consider diversification, use of risk management tools, and the use of the new farm program. We feel it will be important to learn about the new program. Please visit our website, unitedbk.com, for dates of Iowa State Extension meetings for education on the provisions of the program. As Dr. Brent Gloy presented at the UBI Ag Seminar in September, we still have many reasons to be optimistic. 1) Agriculture will be needed to feed the emerging growth economies, which 86% of people live in. The demand will be for more and higher quality food, (protein especially), which our producers will be here to provide. 2) Long-term interest rates appear to be stable, as the U.S. Treasury rates are already higher than most foreign rates. 3) The U.S. economy is improving with lower unemployment and a comfortable rate of inflation. The stock market is again at record levels, with lower oil prices helping people to keep more in their wallets. Those who suffer least from a downturn in the farm economy are those who embrace the challenge of adapting and take proactive steps early on to make the adjustments necessary to continue to be successful. Here at United Bank of Iowa want to emphasize that our ag lenders are here to work with you. Communication is very important to see us through these more challenging times. We continue to believe agriculture has a bright future ahead...it just might require us to look at it from a different perspective. Iowa’s #1 Ag Bank 10 years! We’re Committed to Agriculture!
