The State Water Resources
Control Board has implemented new water restrictions
as of July 15th. Residents are
prohibited from the following
activities: Using water to wash
down hard surfaces like driveways; Using a hose to wash a
motor vehicle unless the hose
is fitted with a shut-off nozzle;
Watering outdoor landscapes
that cause runoff to walkways,
roadways, and adjacent properties; Using potable water to
fill a fountain or decorative
water feature unless the water
is recirculated.

Assistance League of Sacramento Purchases Building
Assistance League of Sacramento, a local 46-year old nonprofit organization serving children, women, and families, has
purchased its first building to house its philanthropic programs and retail business. This larger retail space will expand
the charity’s ability to generate revenue, which represents over 60% of the funding used to bring services to the neediest
segments of our area.
SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Assistance League of Sacramento
(2528 Yorktown Avenue) has purchased the property located at
2751 Fulton Avenue to house its philanthropic center, administrative offices, and retail business. This community based
philanthropic organization serves over 20,000 individuals each
year in the Greater Sacramento area.
This permanent home will allow the organization adequate
space to operate its eight philanthropic programs, which service
local school districts, hospitals, senior residences, and emergency
and youth social services. It will also provide administrative
headquarters and a permanent home for its resale retail business.
Assistance League Thrift Shop has operated from three leased
locations in its 27 years of continuous business operation. This
larger retail space will expand the charity’s ability to generate
revenue, which represents over 60% of the funding used to bring
services to the neediest segments of our area. Assistance League
provides school clothing for over 5,000 children in four local
school districts each year.
Partnering with Wells Fargo Bank, the property will undergo
renovation and is not expected to be operational until sometime in 2015. Greg Thomas, senior vice president Cornish
Carey, has worked with the organization for over three years
to purchase a property in the Arden-Arcade area suitable for
both administrative offices and a retail business. Thomas said,
“This is an ideal location in the Fulton Avenue corridor. It is
close to the schools served by Assistance League. The proximity between the revitalization of Town & Country Village &
Mueller Corner (Fulton and Marconi) and Kuni Auto (Fulton
and El Camino) will boost Assistance League’s ability to provide quality services to those in need.” H

Rancho Cordova, CA (MPG) - Red
Bench Entertainment will retell
the classic story of the four March
sisters in three performances
of Little Women. The company
will perform the 1800s novel by
Louisa May Alcott at the 24th
Street Theater/Sierra 2 Center,
2791 24th Street, Sacramento, at 7
p.m. Friday and Saturday, August
15 and 16, and 2 p.m. Sunday,
August 17.
Jo, the protagonist and second in line of age, is played by
Kristina McCarty, 17. She has
been acting since third grade.
“You get all sweaty and your
heartbeat stops, and the thrill of
it all . . . the whole thing is just
amazing,” she said. She is a senior
at San Juan High School in Citrus
Heights.
The oldest sister Meg is
played by Melissa Gomez, 19,
of Sacramento, who attends
Sacramento City College. “It’s
always terrifying trying something new, getting your new
script, but once I’m actually saying my lines, all the nerves are
gone,” Gomez said. “I love the
dynamic of our sisters, how each
one has her own personality, particularly my character.”
March’s loyal cousin. Melissa
had help with her autism throughout school, but that help stopped
after high school. “I wanted to act
as a career, so I thought I’d start
somewhere . . . I’ve grown a lot

Catholic School in Rancho
Cordova. “I was very excited to
audition,” she said. “I’ve always
wanted to do a classic . . . It’s very
fun, it’s being able to be someone
who has a whole different history,
a whole other character, a whole
other person.” Jenae, 16, attends
Sacramento Waldorf School. She
loves being the people she has
read about in books. “I love that

I can be the hero and be all these
wonderful people. I can go kill a
dragon, I can actually do that, in
some ways.”
The four girls consider their
interrelationships as sisters one
of the most important aspects
of the play. “We all have different connections with each other,
and definitely each one of them
shows,” Kristina said. “What I
love best is that we grow up as
sisters together, and we mature
together in the play.”

entertainment industry is very
broad, and the most important
element to have is perseverance.
“It’s really knowing where to go
to, the contacts, your portfolio,”
Barrios said, “and your drive for
really going 100% and not giving up.”
One of the objects of the organization is to help their members
to grow. This can be attested
to by Melissa Sampson of Elk
Grove, who has a problem with
autism. She plays Hannah, the

Mail Carrier Stops in for a Drink,
Comes out $650,000 Richer!

Nichols is a mail carrier in the
Sacramento area and after her
route, she sometimes stops into a
local gas station for a cool drink
– especially on a hot day. Back in
July, she did just that and decided
to also buy a $1 California
Lucky Life Scratchers® ticket!
She scratched it and realized
right away she had won, but she
and her husband kept it a secret
for almost a month before coming into the California Lottery’s
Sacramento District Office to
claim their prize. During that
time, they figured out the best
way to claim the prize (payments
or cash option) and how to make
the money work for them.
Nichols chose the cash option
and will receive $375,000 in
a lump sum amount. She purchased her ticket at the Shell
station, which is located at
3510 Fair Oaks Boulevard in
Sacramento. She plans on paying
off some debt with her prize and
also starting a college fund for
her daughter. As for any vacation plans, she replied, “Maybe
in a year or so, we’ll plan a family vacation.”

At times, people feel that it is
necessary for them to say, “That’s
mine!” And with that, there is no
doubt who the owner is. But it
really bothers me when the owner
no longer wants “‘it” because “it”
is no longer of any use to them
when the container is empty, torn,
etc. They just toss it out the car
window or drop it on the sidewalk. Then you definitely will
not hear them shouting, “That’s
mine!”
There are litter laws, of course,
and littering tickets are expensive
– if someone catches the offender.
What about the people who drive
around the City or go just outside
the city limits so they can dump
their trash and not have to pay the
cost of going to the County dump
site? It is frustrating to drive to
work or to the store or be on your
way home and see that people
don’t seem to care what our City
looks like and they just get rid of
stuff. The City is considering putting up cameras in places that are
prime “dump”’ sites. My guess is
that most of the people who are
doing the dumping are not doing
it close to where they live nor
would they like to be on camera.
There was a TV commercial
a few years ago in which two
men followed someone for a full
day. During that day, the two
men picked up all the trash that
the person they were following,
threw out of his car onto streets,
in parks, and on store parking lots.
At the end of the day, the two men
knocked on the person’s door and
when the door was opened, they
dumped all the trash they had collected onto the litterer’s living
room floor. Needless to say that
person was mad and said, “Don’t
trash my house.” In response, the
two men said, “Don’t trash (our
City) our State!”
I would like to have a contest
of some sort amongst our City
schools. The class/school that
picks up the most trash and keeps
their school the cleanest for a
week, would win a prize or prizes.
Maybe the kids (and their parents
and school visitors) would be so
proud of how great the school
looked that they would try to keep
it clean after the contest – at least
for a while! When my children
were kids, we would go to State
parks and they would participate
in contests about who could fill
up the little trash bags the Park
Ranger would give them. When
they were done, all of them would
win something: a junior ranger
badge, candy, or other things. It
was a nice incentive. Today, with
fewer Park Rangers in most parks,
many of the programs are gone
but the idea is still good.
There are businesses across
the country that lose billions of
dollars every year because of
theft, but how much money is
lost every year because of breakage? Now I include many things
into that one word – breakage
– because I couldn’t think of a
better one. When someone drops
clothes off a rack and doesn’t take
the time to pick them up, chances
are that piece of clothing could
be torn or snagged and won’t be
sold. A glass is dropped, a lamp is
knocked down, food hits the floor,
etc. and that business, which often
already has a narrow profit margin, can only write off some of
the loss: loss from theft and loss
from breakage.
I have been talking about those
who dump garbage, throw trash
away, or those who leave damaged goods in their wake. Picking
up a piece of paper that someone
else dropped or paper that was
blown there by the wind is easy
because it stands out like a sore
thumb. Many people are leaders and don’t even know that they
are. They show they care through
example and don’t mind attacking
a problem by doing something
about it – simply picking up trash
counts. But other people like to
think of themselves as leaders as
long as nothing needs to be done
AND they have been around for
a long time. Publilius Syrus, a
Roman author in the 1st Century
B.C., said, “Anyone can steer a
ship when the sea is calm.” H

Sacramento Resident Among the First Human Sacramento County Expresses
West Nile Virus Fatalities This Summer Opposition to State Delta Plan
SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - The first
two deaths of the summer due to
West Nile virus infection have
been confirmed by the California
Department of Public Health
(CDPH, announced Dr. Ron
Chapman, CDPH Director and
state public health officer. The
first was a senior citizen from
Sacramento County. The second
was an adult from Shasta County.
“These unfortunate deaths
remind us that we must protect
ourselves from mosquito bites
to prevent West Nile virus and
other mosquito born infections,”
said Chapman. “West Nile virus
activity is greatest during the
summertime.”
West Nile virus is transmitted
to humans and animals by the bite
of an infected mosquito. The risk
of serious illness to most people
is low. However, some individuals—fewer than one percent—can
develop a serious neurologic illness
such as encephalitis or meningitis.
People 50 years of age and older
have a higher chance of getting
sick and are more likely to develop
complications. Recent data also
indicate that those with diabetes
and/or hypertension are at greatest
risk for serious illness.
To date in 2014, West Nile virus
has been detected in 36 California
counties.
CDPH recommends that individuals prevent exposure to mosquito
bites and West Nile virus by practicing the “Three Ds:”
DEET – Apply insect repellent
containing DEET, picaradin, oil
of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535
according to label instructions.
Repellents keep the mosquitoes
from biting you. DEET can be
used safely on infants and children

Mosquitoes bite in the early
morning and evening so it is
important to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside
during these times. Make sure
that your doors and windows
have tight-fitting screens to keep
out mosquitoes. Repair or replace
screens with tears or holes
DRAIN – Mosquitoes lay their
eggs on standing water. Eliminate
all sources of standing water on
your property including flower
pots, old car tires, rain gutters,
and pet bowls. If you know of a
swimming pool that is not being
properly maintained, please contact your local mosquito and vector
control agency.

Drug-Free Coalition PSA Contest
for Rancho Cordova Students

Children, Youth, and Families
Collaborative (RCCYFC) has
been working diligently all summer to put together a Public
Service Announcement (PSA)
Contest to be unveiled in all middle and high schools in Rancho
Cordova this fall!
The goal of the PSA contest is
to engage Rancho Cordova youth
in promoting the fact that most
youth in the Folsom Cordova
Unified School District DO NOT
drink alcohol or use drugs.
Starting in August, RCCYFC’s
social norms sub-committee,
made up of nearly 20 youths
and adults, will be promoting
this contest at the schools. The
PSA contest will run from midSeptember thru mid-November.
Judging will take place
November through January, and
the award winning PSA will be
promoted in the media in January
to kick off our new campaign!
RCCYFC is thankful for the
support of our current collaborative members and sub-committee
members who, through their dedication to this cause, have made
this contest possible!

- This week, the Sacramento
County Board of Supervisors
formally submitted comments
challenging the findings of the
Bay Delta Conservation Plan
(BDCP) state environmental
impact report (EIR) and federal
environmental impact statement (EIS). Of significance, the
comments expressed the frustrations of many residents with
a plan to build twin tunnels and
take additional water from the
Sacramento Delta.
A recognized expert on water
issues and elected representative
of Sacramento’s Delta communities, Supervisor Don Nottoli
expressed, “The BDCP proposes to irreversibly change, and
in many instances, permanently
destroy the generations-old
socioeconomic fabric and physical landscape of the Delta.”
“Constructing massive twin
tunnels won’t produce any more
water, but make no mistake,
it will leave a legacy of negative impacts on the Delta, its
economy, and its people. The
BDCP doesn’t solve California’s
water problems and sacrifices
the Delta to benefit others.
Simply, this is not acceptable,
and never will be.”
Among the many flaws in
the environmental reports,
the County noted that there
are major negative impacts to
the lives of county residents,
the local economy, and natural resources in and around the
Sacramento River, the Delta
itself, and south Sacramento
County communities where twin
tunnels are slated for a 10-12
year construction project.
The Supervisors cited the following significant impacts that
the planning document either
inadequately addresses or
ignores altogether: Direct/indirect impacts to existing legacy
communities and agriculture
from long-term construction
activities and project operations;
Uncertainties surrounding future
water project operations and
how these operations will impact
water supplies; Impacts to the
roadway/transportation network
from construction activities;
Impacts from the conversion
of agricultural land to habitat;
Economic and social impacts
to the local Delta communities
from the long term displacement
of businesses and residents;
Impacts to Airport operations;
and, Impacts from changes to
drainage pattern changes resulting from project construction.
Next, federal and state agencies tasked with reviewing
comments will evaluate and
consider the comments submitted by stakeholders, including,
non-governmental organizations,
individuals, and governmental
entities. It is important to note
that given the huge volume of
comments submitted, the evaluation process will take several
months at best. It is anticipated
that a Final Draft document will
be prepared following the evaluH
ation process.

Two Words That Changed My Life
Dr. James L. Snyder
This week is a hallmark in the
lives of the Gracious Mistress of
the Parsonage and me. Forty-three
years ago this week, we began a
journey that has just become better with each year. That is the
benefit of marrying up.
Getting married was not something I had put together. Very
few men put together their wedding plans. After all, that is why
we get married.
It came to me rather suddenly. I was at Bible college
and one morning one of the
guys in the dorm said to me,
“Congratulations. I just heard the
good news.”
I smiled and nodded my head
thinking about my plans for the
day. I had no idea what he was
talking about and at the time I
did not have the time to ask him
what he was talking about.
Everybody I met that morning
was congratulating me and telling
me how happy they were for me.
Soon I was beginning to wonder
what in the world was going on.
I did not have any test in any my
classes yesterday so it could not
be anything like that. I do not play
the lottery so I could not have
won the lottery. I could not think
of anything I did yesterday that
would cause all of this congratulatory remarks in my direction.
Finally, when I had about as
much as I could take, I asked
somebody, “What is everybody
congratulating me for?”
The person that I queried
looked at me, broke out in laughter and said, “Man, you got to
be kidding!” Then he turned
around, walking away laughing
every step of the way.
I went to my class, found my
seat and got situated then one
of the young ladies passed by,
patted me on the shoulder and
said, “I am so happy for you and
I think it is a wonderful thing.
And I know you are going to be
happy for the rest of your life.”
Well, I had had it. I looked at
her and very firmly said, “What
are you so happy about?”
“Your wedding,” she said
laughing, “you’re getting
married.”
“Oh,” I said, nodding my head.
“Thank you very much.”
Then what she said dawned
on me. I looked at her and said,
“I’m getting what?”
“Silly boy,” she said, laughing
hysterically, “it’s all over campus so it must be true.”
I then had to think about this
situation I was in. Everybody on
the campus knew I was getting
married, except me. Was I still
sleeping? Was this just a dream
I am having?
I began to think about the
events the preceding evening,
and remembered a little conversation I had with the girl I
was now supposed to be getting
married to. In the course of our
conversation, as I remembered it
at the time, she said something to
the effect, “Wouldn’t it be great
to get married.”
As I recalled the conversation,
I nodded my head and said something to the effect, “Yea, I guess
it would be.” That was the end of
the conversation as far as I was
concerned, but the beginning of
an ongoing conversation as far
as someone else was concerned.
Why is it that the groom-to-be
is always the last one to know?
Then I asked one of the girls
in the hallway, “When am I getting married?” At the time, I did
not have the foggiest idea.
She turned away laughing and
muttering to herself something to
the effect that I had a really good
sense of humor. Believe me, I
was not laughing.
As it turned out, me and the
young lady I was to be married
to, were engaged to be married
and, I do not want to pry into
this point very much, the wedding dress already purchased.”
As it turned out, it was the
best thing that ever happened to
me. Looking back over life, most
of the good things that have happened to me were never of my
doing. I’m convinced that is the
way God works. If you are doing
what you want to do, you are
probably not doing what God
wants you to do. At least I have
developed that philosophy to this
point of my life.
Some things in life I am rather
good at planning, a wedding
not being one of them; not even
close.
After all these years, I can still
remember that wonderful day
when the Gracious Mistress of
the Parsonage and I were united
in holy matrimony. Our wedding
was rather simple and the focus
point of the wedding was the
wedding vows. When I said, “I
do” it clinched the deal and I was
married and I have been doing it
ever since.
I have said many words in
my life, and written thousands
and thousands of words, but
the most important words that
have changed my life were those
words, “I do.”
The Bible has a lot to say
about marriage and husbands and
wives. “Therefore as the church
is subject unto Christ, so let the
wives be to their own husbands
in every thing. Husbands, love
your wives, even as Christ also
loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:24-25).
There are some empty words
that we use every day but every
once in a while we say a word
or two that fills our life with joy
unspeakable and full of glory. H

Without Limits
Get Back Up
We all face challenges and
have to deal with adversity. What
should you do when you stumbleand fall? Get back up. Failure
only occurs when you quit.
How do babies learn to walk?
Their success is far from instantaneous. They fall down after
their first attempt. Then they
get back up and fall again. This
process is repeated hundreds of
times. As infants, we all learn to
walk by simply getting up one
more time than we fall down.
Becoming discouraged is
learned, not innate. As we
mature, our unshakable childhood determination weakens.
Had we attempted to learn to
walk at a later age, we would
conclude that it was impossible after just a few unsuccessful
attempts.
You were successful at walking because of adamant tenacity.
You didn’t give it a try. It was
something you were going to
accomplish because you had
not yet learned the concept of
failure.
How’s your attitude now? Are
you ready to give up after one
or more unsuccessful attempts
at reaching a goal? Do you justify giving up by telling yourself
and others that at least you gave
it a try?
Creating a rewarding life is a
challenge. Tripping and falling
or getting knocked down is to be
expected. The only way to avoid
by
this is to do nothing, which accomplishes nothing. Whenever you are
down you must get back up.
When you fall, there will be no
shortage of people attempting to
comfort you with an endless list
of reasons why it’s OK to give
up. Don’t listen to them! All you
need is one reason to get back
up. Throughout history, there
has never been a single accomplishment by anyone who has
remained down.
Getting back up isn’t easy. It
requires lots of effort. Repeated
falls drain your energy. When
you feel down and out, you must
do whatever it takes to get back
on your feet. Failure only occurs
when you stay down.
Feed your motivation by maintaining a focus on your goal.
Visualize all of the benefits you
will accrue once an objective
is attained. Imagine how you
will feel and act once you have
reached your destination. These
strategies direct your mind to
work non-stop to get you to
where you want to be.
Seek help, guidance, and
encouragement from those who
are where you want to be. You
don’t have to know them personally. You can read what they
write or what others write about
them. Look for inspirational stories in the media and online.
Keep in mind that regardless of
the challenges you may be facing, other people have also been

through them and have found
solutions.
Make your steps as small as
necessary when getting back up.
Maintain a forward focus. Avoid
getting caught up in the past.
Learn from your mistakes. Don’t
turn them into anchors that hold
you down.
Don’t blame anyone else when
you fall. Don’t feel sorry for
yourself. Don’t become angry
or resentful. Negative emotions
such as bitterness weigh you
down, making it very difficult to
get back up. Don’t fixate on what
you think you don’t have, concentrate on what you do have.
Developing an attitude of gratitude wards off bitterness.
It’s never too late to get back
up. It doesn’t matter how long
you have been down or what
your age is. Each day is a new
beginning filled with unlimited
opportunity. So whatever challenges come your way, trip and
fall as you may, just get up one
more time than you fall, and all

L is for Loser

The wounds are still fresh. It
still stings. It was made clear to
me on July 4th that I am a bonafide
Loser—with a capital L. (Place
your right thumb and index finger
in the shape of an L in the middle
of your forehead and look in the
mirror now.)
Admittedly, Chuck and I kind
of futzed around the weeks preceding the Fourth of July. We
weren’t proactive in making any
plans on one of the most fun,
sunny, carefree holiday weekends
on the American calendar. We languished in hope and optimism that
we’d get an invitation to go, like,
to Northridge Country Club, or
Tahoe, or Carmichael, or down the
street, to celebrate with friends and
eat barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers and drink adult beverages
and watch spectacular fireworks.
The phone never rang. No “Are
you guys free to go with us to
Tahoe for the Fourth?” calls. Zero
texts like: “Do u guys wanna come
down 4 a bbq?” Nada. As that big
fat number four on the calendar
drew nearer and blaringly glared at
us, the silence between us Empty
Nesters was deafening. I can’t
speak for my husband, but I was
kind of mortified.
I get that our daughters will
never darken our doorstep.
Newport Beach and Portland on
the Fourth will trump time spent
with the parentals in the River of
Gold every time. I understand all
that. And let’s see: the Bs were
headed with the Zs to Graeagle;
the Hs were in Hawaii; the Es were
en route to Tahoe; and the Fs were
on their way to Oregon.
And the Myerses of Gold
River? We were smack dab at the
intersection of Desperation and
Embarrassment.
Late on the evening of the third,
though, Chuck’s cell phone rang.
The Rs of El Dorado Hills asked,
“Hey, are you guys available to
meet up at the Folsom Rodeo
and see some fireworks tomorrow
night?”
Chuck’s quick reply was, “Sure!
We’d love to. It’s been too long
since we’ve gotten together!”
Whew! We had been invited
somewhere. A sense of relief
washed over me. Gratitude filled
my every pore. Thank you, R’s,
for reaching out to us – even if
we were, obviously, your Z-Lister
friends, the ones that are way down
low on your invitee list.
Chuck had a stellar idea. “Let’s
go to Mikuni first, just you and me,
and then we’ll drive up and meet
them.” Great plan. Done.
Ecstatic, excited and no longer red-faced with embarrassment,
we set out for sushi a deux prior to
what promised to be a fun/friends/
firework-filled evening. As we
were in the middle lane ready to
turn left into Mikuni’s parking lot,
we were accosted by the appearance of a vast, empty parking lot,
void of any living beings.
“Are you kidding me? Mikuni’s
can’t be closed!” We were in
shock, filled with disappointment.
“I cannot believe it!” It never even
occurred to us that it would be
closed.
Certain that other more business-savvy restaurants would be
open, we decided to head up to El
Dorado Hills Town Centre. “I bet
all the restaurants up there will be
open,” I said. Again, we drove into
a black crater of inactivity, with
nary a human in sight.
Right then, Mr. R. called from
the Folsom Rodeo. “Chuck, I don’t
think tonight’s going to happen.
We’ve been waiting in line for
30 minutes, and they’re telling us
they’re sold out for the fireworks.
So I think we’re going to just
go home and barbecue with our
neighbors.”
Alrightey then…
Have you ever experienced
that feeling of acute loneliness
and loser-ness, when you feel like
everybody else in the world is at
that very moment laughing and
having fun … but you?
“Baby, we’re Losers,” I said. I
had to laugh to keep from crying.
Ever the optimist, Chuck suggested we go back through Old
Folsom. “Maybe Hacienda will be
open.”
Well, Hacienda was not open,
nor was any other restaurant in
Old Folsom, except for one. And
it was chock-full of other Losers.
Just like us.
Hampton’s on Sutter is the name
of the restaurant. Now that is one
customer-oriented, very smart
business! (Well, either that or

they’re dumber than a box of rocks
for making their now-disgruntled
employees work on a night when
every other restaurant in town let
their employees enjoy the summer
holiday.)
Anyway, so we put our name

ordered a beer/wine, consoled and
commiserated with other fellow
Losers, and waited for “Myers,
Party of two” to be called. And you
know what? We had a pretty delicious meal at a great table, on a
quaint deck, overlooking charming
Sutter Street.
We survived, actually enjoyed,
and later laughed at our quiet, illfated, not-a-firework-to-be-seen
Fourth of July holiday.
So yeah, L is for Loser—and also
Lesson Learned. You can bet that
next year we’ll be hinting around
for a Fourth of July invitation starting the day after Easter.

Lancers Football Back in Action

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Monday marked the first day
of practice for the new season for the Cordova High School
varsity and junior varsity football teams. According to CHS
varsity Head Coach Vance Mueller, who is in his third year
of running the Lancers’ grid program, there are 48 players
each on the varsity and junior varsity teams. That’s a huge
increase from last season, when varsity had 26 players and
JV had 42.
“We’ve doubled our number on varsity,” Mueller
said. “We’re finally able have a full practice for the first
time in two years. We haven’t had enough bodies to do
scrimmages.”
The players on both teams spent Monday and Tuesday
evenings conditioning and doing classroom work. “Basically
getting back into football shape from the dead period,”
Mueller said. “They had 16 days off, and a lot of them were
anxious (on Monday). The classroom time is to get them
mentally sharp for practices.”
On Wednesday, Lancer gridders strapped on shoulder
pads for the first time since competing at a full-contact football camp at Monterey Trail High School of Elk Grove last
month. “(Wednesday) real football starts,” Mueller said.
“They are excited about being out there.”
Today, Friday, both squads will start practice at 6 p.m.
Mueller said the practices are open to the public. Next
Monday, the CHS football teams return to their practice schedule from last year during the regular season. On
Mondays and Tuesdays, players on each team have study hall
after school then practice starting at 6 p.m. On Wednesdays
and Thursdays, the squads will practice after school.
Cordova will host Capital Christian in a scrimmage on
Saturday, Aug. 23rd. Both varsity and junior varsity teams
will start at 9 a.m.
On Friday, Aug. 29th, Cordova will open its 2014 season with a non-league home opener against Pioneer of
Woodland. Three of the Lancers’ non-league games will be
played at home; McClatchy visits Friday, Sept. 12th, and
Johnson stops by Friday, Sept. 19th. Cordova will play at
Bella Vista the week after its game against Pioneer and at
Foothill of Sacramento on Sept. 26th.
This season also marks Cordova returning to the Sierra
Valley Conference that features El Dorado, Union Mine,
Rosemont, Galt and Liberty Ranch. Cordova will host Galt
in the conference and homecoming game on Saturday, Oct.
11th.

upcoming issue of the Grapevine Independent.

Members of the Cordova Junior Lancers Pee-Wee football team go over
instructions and drills at Monday’s practice at Cordova High School. The
squad, along with the Pee Wee, Junior Midget, and Midget Jr. Lancer
teams will kick off their season tomorrow, Saturday, at Hughes Stadium
on the Sacramento City College campus in a jamboree. The start times
are: Junior Pee Wee, 11 a.m.; Pee Wee, 1 p.m.; Junior Midgets, 3 p.m.; and
Midgets, 5 p.m. The season starts in earnest on Saturday, Aug. 23rd when
the four squads play at the Rio Linda Jr. Knights. The first home game for
the Jr. Lancers is Saturday, Aug. 30th against the Ponderosa Jr. Bruins’
