refuge provides. Bon Secour is indeed
a natural oasis of wildlands in a sea of

over 6500 acres of coastal lands ranging

consists of 40 acres of land which was
donated by Dr. Amos Garrett, a doctor
of dentistry, who resided here in Robertsdale. The development of the park
began back in 1968. It consists of three

stand. There is a pavilion with picnic
tables and playground perfect for birthday parties and family gatherings. In
addition to this area we now have our

must bring the registration receipt from the previous state. Call the

and documentation required. Alabama requires automobile
insurance, but has no state vehicle inspection requirement.
DRIVING licenses must be obtained by new residents within 30 days.
Those with a current license must pass an eye exam and present their
current license and Social Security Card; others must pass a written,
road and eye exam. The Alabama driver’s license fee is $28; $23 for

GET MARRIED in a romantic chapel or the courthouse. Licenses are
issued at the Baldwin County Courthouse in Bay Minette weekdays
8-4:30 p.m. for $40; and $58.00 for a courthouse ceremony as long

“This is a fun way of reaching out to
our members, thanking them for
belonging to the Chamber, and giving

Crocker, Ambassador Program Chairman. “Every month, we provide our
Ambassadors with a list of members,
they choose a few from the list and then
stop by for a visit—with popcorn,
which everyone seems to appreciate,
and with each bag of popcorn, we
include information about the next

for their ability to reach out to the
public, talk about the chamber, and be

said. “The Ambassadors are a vital part

between the Chamber and our
members, hopefully reaching out to
members, including those that have
not been that active in the past and
encouraging them to be more involved.

Foley
G
olden LivingCenter–Foley has been
servicing the healthcare needs of
many local seniors for over forty-six years.
The Center offers skilled nursing care,
short-term rehabilitation, hospice care and
a specialized Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care
Unit. “Our facility’s objective is to provide
senior healthcare services in a new and
better way,” said Executive Director, Tommy
Herndon. The facility’s Golden Living
Orthopedic Center of Excellence offers
physical, occupational, and speech therapy
for those recovering from, stroke, joint
replacement surgery, illness, or injury.
Herndon said the LivingCenter provides

state-of-the-art clinical care in an environment that addresses
the emotional and social needs of patients and their families,
and focuses on enriching their quality of life. “We call it the
‘Golden Difference.’ We provide empathy and compassion
but with a passion that embraces innovation and new
technologies.” Some of that technology involves the use of
ultra sound and electrical stimulation equipment for pain
management and improved range of motion and the use of
specially engineered Nautilus workout machines designed to
provide ease of access and strength building for senior users.
In operation since 1966, Golden LivingCenter–Foley is a
154-bed Skilled Nursing Facility participating in most
insurance health plans including Medicare, Medicaid, and
most HMOs, PPOs, and private insurers.
Robertsdale

Opened in 2000 and expanded in 2008, Robertsdale Health
Care Center is growing again, with a new wing devoted to
short-term rehabilitation expected to open in spring 2013, said
Mary Kay Polys, administrator. “Approximately twenty-five
percent of our population is here for short-term rehabilitation,
so we are excited to expand our services in this area.”

In addition to rehab, the facility features the
20-bed secure Ludke Unit for memory care
and a Medical Specialty Unit for acute care,
plus physical and occupational therapy, speech
pathology, and other services. “We are very
proud of our extensive medical staff, led by
Medical Director Dr. Joseph Steele who visits
twice a day on weekdays. In addition, we have
other physicians who visit regularly, and we
have a full-time respiratory therapist on staff,
all of whom complement the rest of our
nursing staff.”
Many residents of Robertsdale Health Care
Center are very active in regularly scheduled
activities and clubs, Polys said. “We have
women’s Red Hat group, morning and afternoon activities that
might include trips to places like Gulf Shores or the Fairhope
Pier.”

Located in a residential neighborhood on the Eastern Shore
between Fairhope and Daphne, Montrose Bay Health Care has
been in operation for more than 20 years. Now managed by
Sava Senior Care, the facility has undergone a lot of upgrades
in recent years, said Administrator Wayne Cole, who has been
onboard for three years. “This generation expects quality, and
that’s what we offer in everything we do.”
Montrose Bay has a 5-Star rating from CMS and Medicare,
Cole noted. “In addition, we won a Bronze Quality Award from
the American Health Care Association last year, and for the past
two years, we’ve been rated 100% on our customer satisfaction
surveys. That’s what is important. Sava is service-driven; we take
good care of our employees and they, in turn, take good care of
our residents.”
The facility includes four new private suites that can
accommodate family members for patients receiving hospice
care or under other circumstances.
“We’re a family. Some of our residents have been here for
years, including some non-traditional residents: turtles. We
have a turtle haven for rescued turtles in our courtyard, and
our residents love this.”

he first thing I noticed about this school is the
incredible level of community support and pride in
our high school,” said Ross, who completed his PhD in
School Leadership from Auburn University in spring 2012.
“The majority of our community are RHS alumni and now
their kids are attending school here, and they want nothing
but the best for the school and the students. With that kind
of community support, plus amazing teachers and staff who
are willing to work as hard as they can for the kids, truly,
the sky’s the limit for what we can accomplish here.”
As principal, Ross wants to take the school to its greatest
potential. “There’s no reason this can’t be the best high
school in Baldwin County. My goal is first to ensure that
every student graduates. In this competitive world, they
need that diploma. But I also want to make certain that
they have the skills and the confidence to go beyond
high school, to pursue some type of post high school
education—college or trade school—or start their own
business if that’s what they want to do.”

To accomplish these goals, Ross
envisions special career academies at
RHS. “Students who are interested in
forestry, engineering, the medical
profession, technology, hospitality, or
whatever, will have a curriculum that
gives them direction. I want them to see
the reason they are in particular classes
and understand how they will use this
education beyond high school. And more
than that, I want them to be confident
that they can succeed in whatever they
choose to do.”
Coach Brian Campbell, who
most recently was offensive coordinator
for Daphne High School, also sees
unlimited potential at RHS. In addition,
he views his new position at the school as
a chance to help his own community.
“This is where I live; I’ve been here
since 1995, and I want these kids to
have the same opportunities as any other
child in Baldwin County to be winners.
I think it’s the right time to build this
program here.”
Building the football program will be
a challenge, Campbell admitted. “It’s
important that we increase our strength
and speed to be able to compete in 6A
football. We want to make sure that
everyone in our city leagues, middle
schools, freshman teams, and varsity has
the opportunity and the available tools to
make them successful. Our goal is to get
better each and every week—and then,
to make the playoffs.”
Campbell thinks the program has the
potential to be one of the best in the
county. “That’s our goal, and that is
going to take a lot of hard work from
everyone associated with this program,
including players, parents, coaches, and
our community.”
Campbell agrees with Ross that kids
need to know that they can accomplish
anything. “You’ve just got to show them
you care, and show them they can be
successful.”

When Acie Campbell, zone manager
for Coca Cola Bottling Company,
Consolidated, started work at the
Robertsdale facility in 1985, the
warehouse was nothing more than a
little Quonset hut. “Now we’ve got
around 100,000 square feet of
warehouse and office space, so we’ve
definitely seen growth in Central
Baldwin County.”
In the 1980s, the warehouse was one
of several in Baldwin County that

distributors
supplied Coca-Cola products in 6.5
ounce glass bottles and “King Size” 10
ounce bottles. “Now we carry many
different brands and many different
sizes of each, including energy drinks,
vitamin water, Minute Maid juices, and
more. And we service almost all of
Baldwin County, from Little River to
Orange Beach. It’s very convenient from
this location—that’s why they call
Robertsdale the Hub City.”
Campbell said they distribute around
2.5 million cases a year. “Our biggest
sellers are still the carbonated soft
drinks, but alternative drinks—the
energy drinks, vitamin water and
such—are trending up.”
Working with chambers of commerce
throughout the region, Campbell sees
how the organizations work for the
betterment of the whole community.
“Like all chambers, the Central Baldwin
Chamber has the community at heart.
Of course they support the businesses in
our area, but they bring value to the
public as well. We try to do that with
our business too. Our mission is to
honor God in all that we do and to be
involved in the community. That goes
hand in hand.”
Budweiser-Busch
Distributing
Johnny Shaw, sales manager for
Budweiser-Busch Distributing, says the
family-owned business has seen a lot of
growth in its 44 years on the south side
of Loxley. “I’ve been with the company
for 36 years, and in my time here, we’ve
added on several times and more than
doubled in size. We now have about
30,000 square feet of environmentally
controlled storage space.”
The location is perfect for growth,
Shaw said. “We’ve got the beach and the
interstate. We count on people coming
to Baldwin County, but the locals
are great. Over the years, we’ve all gone
through challenges—hurricanes, and
growth challenges—but the people
here in central Baldwin always rise to
the occasion.”
As the only beer wholesaler in
Baldwin County, the company
distributes more than two million cases
and thousands of kegs to more than
650 accounts in Baldwin, Escambia,
and Conecuh counties plus the city
of Monroeville.
The future looks bright, Shaw says.
“Everything is evolving, but business is
good. We run 14 delivery routes with
10 sales people and about 60 employees
at the plant. We distribute Budweiser
and Busch beers, plus water, micro
brews, and imports. And we’ve just
acquired a wine license, so we’re going
to add that.”
Shaw says the company enjoys being a
part of the community. “We help with
everything that we can, locally and
through corporate sponsorships. People
here are wonderful to work with, and
we like doing what we can to add to
the community.”

invest in a home in Baldwin County. The prices are good, the
selection is great, and interest rates may never be lower.

“People are gaining confidence and we
see the market starting to improve,” said
Robb Cunningham. “Homes in our area
are extremely affordable compared with
most other area in the country, which is
great for those who are relocating here,
whether for a job or retirement. Mortgage payments now are generally less
than rent, and that will get some renters
to make the jump to homeownership.”

starter homes, Cunningham said, “but

developments in central Baldwin County

Mississippi. Right now especially, the
prices are fantastic and our quality is
always great. We pride ourselves on our
service. We perform two walk-throughs
with the customer prior to closing, and
we come back after one year and perform
another walk-through. People really
appreciate that.”

John Sturma has been building homes
for 41 years and is used to dealing with
market fluctuations, he says. “This
remains a great place to buy and build,
and of course prices and interest rates are
really good now.”
In 1969, John and his wife, Dolores,
built their home in Robertsdale, doing
all the work. “We decided to go into the
business, and since then, we’ve built
approximately 150 new homes here in
Baldwin County, working with our
clients through the whole process—from
drawing plans, to securing a lot, building
the house, and helping them move in.
We are a custom homebuilder and will
build any size and any style home a client
may want.”
Sturma says he’s seen many changes
in central Baldwin County since he built
his first house. “It was very rural back
then of course, but people have always
wanted to live here for our beaches, our
access to Mobile and Pensacola, and our
good weather that lets you enjoy the
outdoors all year long. This area is really
growing, but it’s still an easy place to
live with good schools, good homes,
and good people.”

“To me, the greatest reward in office is

a lot. We had a 39% jump in population
in 2010 and are now a younger
community than when I started, and
we’re better prepared to give others the
opportunity to call Robertsdale home.
We have done well with upgrades to
our utility system, enhanced our park
facilities, remodeled and constructed new
city structures, maintained a low crime
rate, and achieved these improvements
with a balanced operating budget. I think
that we’re on a positive path, which will
create jobs and the desire for others to
live here. With all these attributes, we
will only prosper in the coming years.”

“Silverhill is home. I’ve lived here all
my life, so it holds a special place in my

various “i” devices, empowered by the World Wide Web, have radically changed how we live.

urning out graduates that can
successfully compete on a global
level in a digitally connected world has
never been more vital or challenging for
school districts. That’s the reason that
Alan T. Lee, superintendent for Baldwin
County Public Schools, launched what
he describes as the “Digital Renaissance”
which will place an Apple Mac Book Air
laptop computer in the hands of every
high school teacher and student in
August 2012. The initiative will also
empower teachers to transition to
challenge-based learning which ensures
a 21st Century classroom experience.
“Employers expect graduates today
to be able to problem solve, effectively
work in teams, to communicate and
create,” said Dr. Lee. “Baldwin County
Public Schools’ Digital Renaissance is
designed to bring our classrooms into

the 21st Century so that students
graduate, empowered with the skills that
employers are demanding in the global
economy.” The Digital Renaissance began at
Baldwin County High School in Bay
Minette in August 2011. Lee says the
results have been impressive. “Test
scores are up. Teachers report that
students are engaged like never before
and discipline referrals to the office are
down by 70 percent. Similar results are
echoed by districts in other parts of the
country where the 1:1 laptop initiative
(one computer for every student) has
been implemented.” In August 2012, the digital initiative
expands to the county’s other six high
schools, and at Robertsdale High
School, Principal Craig Ross says the
Digital Renaissance will provide great
opportunities. “I was a principal in Auburn when
the school system there brought in

laptops, and it changed everything.
Teachers and schools were finally
speaking the language of the millennium generation. Most classrooms today
do not look any different today than
they did when I was in school, and yet
the world is completely different.
Laptops open up the world. They
completely change the way students
learn, and that’s what we need.” The Baldwin County Public School
System is one of 35 school districts that
are part of the elite League of Innovative
Schools, an alliance that is committed to
raising student achievement. The
League was launched in partnership
with the U.S. Department of Education
and with Digital Promise, a new
national center created by Congress to
advance breakthroughs in education
with technology. Digital Promise is part
of the administration’s broader agenda
to spur innovation in education and
prepare students for the challenges of a
21st century economy. “Time and again, Baldwin county
residents have expressed the desire to
have world-class schools,” Dr. Lee
noted. “Our communities have stepped
up to support schools in the toughest of
economic times with the expectation
that our classrooms be the best that they
can possibly be. Are we world-class yet?
No, but with Digital Renaissance
and the continued support of our
outstanding residents, we’re on the path
to world-class schools. When we all
work together, we can, indeed, have
the best schools in the world and that
is my goal.” Baldwin County Public Schools
serve more than 29,000 students on 44
campuses. The school district has grown
by more than 27% over the past 10
years. A recent audit by the Public
Affairs Research Council of Alabama
showed that the school system is one
of the most efficient in the state.
