Breaking Bad
I
t’s safe to say that the way
w we consume television
has changed. Whilst advances
ad
such as television
recorders and streamin
streaming have become prevalent,
one company began to d
dominate the way people
consume film and televisi
television: Netflix. The ondemand Internet streamin
streaming service has allowed us
to consume a huge catalo
catalogue of television. One of
the television shows that holds the reigns to this
changing landscape is Br
Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad
d became something of a cult
phenomenon. The show w
was the talk of the Internet,
yet was somewhat absent
absen from British television
screens (FX and 5USA only
on broadcast the first two
seasons). Luckily enough for British viewers, it was
available on Netflix.
Breaking Bad
d is a crime drama which follows
Walter White (Bryan Cranston),
Cran
a high school
chemistry teacher who soon
so discovers that he
suffers from terminal lung cancer. He decides to
make sure that his family are financially secure
after his death and enters a partnership with a
former student of his, Jes
Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).
Together Walter and Jesse
Jess begin their foray into the
drug industry by creating and selling some of the
purest crystal methamph
p
methamphetamine around.
The show originally aired on AMC in January
2008, with an emotion
2
emotionally gripping pilot episode
which established the main characters, their
motivations and the audience’s
aud
initial feelings
towards them. It conclude
concluded in September 2013,
simultaneously on AMC and
a Netflix worldwide,
spanning a total of five se
seasons and 62 episodes.
Breaking Bad
d started off slowly, with the first
episode titled ‘Pilot’ garnering
garne
over 1.4 million US
viewers. As time went on the show was considered
4
Breaking Bad
one of the greatest television shows of all time, with
the finale ‘Felina’ attracting 10.28 million viewers.
In 2014 the television series entered the Guinness
World Records 2014 edition as the ‘Highest-Rated
TV Series’ due to its 99 out of 100 Metacritic score.
Whilst Breaking Bad is spearheaded by its
fantastic creator, Vince Gilligan (The Lone Gunmen,
The X-Files), his vision is also carried out by a stellar
cast. Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in The Middle, Drive,
Godzilla) plays Walter White. When we first see
him we are reminded of the cheesy and weak Hal
of Malcolm in The Middle, however as the series
progresses we soon forget about Hal and are left
focusing on a gripping character who is polarising
and has us on the edge of our seats, given Walter’s
incredible character development.
Anna Gunn (Deadwood) plays Skyler, the wife of
Walter White. Skyler loves her family and is initially fully
supportive of her husband. As the series progresses
we see the various sides of Skyler, the reaches of her
emotions and the motivations behind her actions. As
with the character of Walter, Skyler is someone whom,
over the course of the series you will find your opinions
about changing as her story progresses.
Aaron Paul (Need for Speed, Exodus: Gods and
Kings) plays Jesse Pinkman. When we first meet
Jesse he is a street smart, rude and a drug addict.
As the series progresses we begin to see the many
layers of Jesse, as he develops in to someone who
is very different from his initial appearance.
Joining us at MCM Birmingham Comic Con is
Breaking Bad’s RJ Mitte, who plays Walter White
Jr., the son of Skyler and Walter, who has cerebral
palsy. After hearing about his father’s cancer he
begins lashing out and changing his behavioural
attitudes. Walt Jr. sees his father as his role model,
and at points he often blames his mother for
particular happenings, even though he is unaware
of the bigger picture. Whilst Walt Jr. is often
sheltered from the secrets surrounding the White
family, he is also very quick at assessing a situation.
Like his character Walt Jr., RJ Mitte also has
mild cerebral palsy. Mitte had to regress from his
cerebral palsy therapy when portraying Walt Jr. and
states, “It was very hard to regress. I had to stay up
real late so I could learn to blur my speech more.
I had to learn how to use crutches so it didn’t look
like I’m faking walking. I didn’t want to look like just
another faker because I really have it. If you’re going
to do it, you have to do it the full way.”
Whilst his cerebral palsy isn’t as severe as his
character’s, Mitte believed that it was important for
Vince to cast someone with cerebral palsy and that
he now feels like a role model for others actors who
have cerebral palsy.
Life after Breaking Bad has seen Mitte star in
the TV series Switched at Birth, where Mitte plays
Campbell, who is interested in Daphne (Katie Leclerc),
one of two girls who were mistakenly switched at
birth. 2015 will see him star in the drama film Who’s
Driving Doug, where he plays college student Doug
(Mitte), who goes on a road trip with underachieving
driver Scott (Ray William Johnson) and his college
crush Stephanie (Paloma Kwiatkowski).
Mitte will be at MCM Birmingham Comic Con
throughout the weekend. Whilst Breaking Bad has
finished airing, the intense series can be found on
Netflix in its entirety, or you can buy the complete
Blu-Ray and DVD set on Amazon.

CARY

E
C
ary Elwes is a wonderful actor who is handsome,
funny and, unlike some who have portrayed
Robin Hood, he can speak with an English
accent. Well… it helps that he was born in England.
After moving to the US to study acting, Elwes
eventually made his feature film debut in the drama
Another Country (1984). He went on to feature in period
pieces such as Lady Jane (1986), in which he starred
alongside Helena Bonham Carter, and Maschenka
(1987), an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s first novel.
1987 saw the release of The Princess Bride. Based
on Wil

adapting the book for the screen),
Elwes credits the film as the one that
changed his life and helped give him
the career he has today. Told in the

Cary Elwes
Men in Tights (1993) Twister (1996) and Liar Liar (1997).
He also appeared in the final season of The X-Files
(1993 – 2002) as the “ambiguous” FBI Assistant
Director Brad Follmer.
Elwes earned himself a new generation of fans
when he starred as Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the
horror film Saw (2004), playing one of two men who
are chained to opposite ends of a bathroom, with no
idea how they got there. They slowly discover that
they are part of a game set up by a deranged serial
killer named Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). When speaking to
IGN, Elwes revealed that when he was sent the script,
he read it in “one sitting” and was also “blown away”
with the short film, by writer/director James Wan and
co-writer/actor Leigh Whannell. “I knew immediately
that these guys had something very unique and very
original in their hands,” Elwes told IGN. “This is a film
that actually had a message, albeit a distorted one,
and an extremely complicated and intricate part, and
characters that were very well-rounded.”
Released in the US and UK in October 2004, Saw
garnered a strong reputation via word-of-mouth and
earned $103 million worldwide, all against a low $1.2
million budget. It eventually became a huge franchise,
spawning six sequels and even two video games.
Elwes returned to reprise the role of Gordon in the
final film, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010), and Saw
celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, with a limited
re-release over Halloween. Looking back on the film,
Elwes had high praise for James Wan and Leigh
Whannell, saying, “I really had a great time making it,
it really was fun, even though we worked so fast [in 18
days] we barely had time to sit down, it really was a
joyous experience.”
In the comedy series Psych (2006-2014) Elwes
delivers a memorable turn as the cultured art thief
Pierre Despereaux. Certain episodes have seen him
being called in by the pseudo-psychic Shawn Spencer
(James Roday) to help catch another thief and even
faking his own death, all the while wanting to prove
that he is the “greatest art thief that ever lived”.
Elwes has also lent his vocal talents to various
animated series, with minor roles in Pinky and the
Brain (1995 - 1998) and Family Guy (1999- ). He also
portrayed Aquaman in the animated home video
movie, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
as well as working on the English language tracks for
Studio Ghibli films Porco Rosso (1992), Whisper of the
Heart (1995) and The Cat Returns (2002).
Cary Elwes will be at MCM Birmingham Comic Con
taking part in photo shoots and signing copies of his
book throughout the weekend.
Director Rob Reiner described Cary as “the perfect
guy,” for the role of Westley. He also revealed that
before filming, “neither Cary nor Mandy had any
experience sword fighting.” The extensive training
meant that the duel they share in the film is actually of
both Cary and Mandy doing their own fencing.
While the film was a moderate box office success in
the US, it only really gained popularity on home video
and TV. It is listed in the American Film Institute’s top
100 greatest love stories, at number 88, and is also in
Channel 4’s 50 Greatest Comedy films, at number 46.
October saw the release of the book, As You Wish:
Inconceivable Tales From the Making of The Princess
Bride, written by Elwes and Joe Layden. The book
includes never-before-told stories from the making
of the film, such as how Elwes injured himself when
using André’s all-terrain vehicle, and how a Fat Albert
impression helped him land the role of Westley. There
are also production photos and interviews with cast
members, as well as a foreword by director Reiner and
an epilogue from the producer Norman Lear.
Looking back at the film, Elwes said, “It was a joy to
work on such a magical film with an amazing cast of
talented actors and friends.”
The 1990s saw him star in blockbusters such as
Days of Thunder (1990), Dracula (1992), Robin Hood:

‘Allo ‘Allo!

‘A
llo ‘Allo! was a British sitcom for BBC One,
created by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft.
The show began broadcasting in December
1982 with the pilot episode, The British Are Coming
and continued to run for a solid nine series with a
total of 85 episodes until 1992 with the finale A Winkle
In Time, written by Jeremy Lloyd and Paul Adam.
The show told the story of René Artois (Gorden
Kaye), owner of the Café René in pastoral Nouvion,
(Nazi-occupied) France and his struggles to keep his
small business running, whilst also trying desperately
to keep the German army and French resistance
pleased, without being killed in the process.
The twisted story included a German Colonel, Von
Strohm (Richard Marner), who decided to use Café
René as a hiding spot for a stolen painting of The
Fallen Madonna’ (also known as ‘The Fallen Madonna
with the Big Boobies’). His ultimate goal was to sell
the painting after the war. However, Adolf Hitler soon
sent out agent Herr Otto Flick (Richard Gibson and
David Jenson) to track the painting down. This sadly
wasn’t poor old René’s only problem, as the French
resistance led by Michelle “of the Résistance” Dubois
(Kirsten Cooke) (who ironically was the only French
character in the show who spoke English) forced him
to let the resistance use the café as a safe house for
two bumbling British airmen Fairfax and Carstairs
(John D. Collins and Nicholas Frankau) who are trying
to be returned to England.
Throughout the series, René also had to keep his
secret affairs with two waitresses hidden from his
tone-deaf wife Edith (Carmen Silvera), or risk not only
losing his head, but his precious café.
The show was known for its famous
catchphrases such as ‘Good Moaning’ and ‘I shall
say zis only once’, its hilarious portrayal of language
and its memorable zany characters. Those behind
the characters here at MCM Birmingham Comic
Con include:
Sue Hodge (Mimi Labonq)
Born in Orsett, Essex, Susan Hodge studied at
Bird College, based in Sidcup, where she trained
as a dancer, cabaret artist and theatre performer.
In 1987 she landed the role of Mimi Labonq in
‘Allo! ‘Allo!. She first appeared in the show’s fourth
series and stayed until the very end of the show in
1992, appearing in a total of 61 episodes overall.
Mimi was one of the French waitresses’ for Café
René and was a vicious, bloodthirsty, revengeseeking killer who passionately hated the Germans.
However, she soon started having an affair with
René and ended up staying at the café after the
war ended. She was also a wonderful singer and
dancer, putting good use to Sue’s skills.
Aside from ‘Allo ‘Allo!, Sue has also performed in
theatre, international TV and on the cinema screen.
In 2007, she returned to reprise her role as Mimi in
the television special The Return of ‘Allo ‘Allo!
Francesca Gonshaw (Maria Recamier)
Born in Marylebone, London, Francesca Gonshaw
studied at the British drama school, Academy
of Live and Recorded Arts, where she studied
dramatic art. She has worked behind the camera
and was instrumental in the start of the American
entertainment film company Miramax. She played
the role of French waitress Maria Recamier in series
1-3 of ‘Allo ‘Allo!, appearing in 21 episodes overall.
The chaxracter of Maria was also having an affair
with René, and constantly believed that the two of
them would elope one day. The character showed
8
‘Allo ‘Allo!
bravery in a couple of episodes when she helped
the resistance. She also had a tendency to spit on
people when she constantly gargled the letter “R”.
Francesca currently lives in London as a writer
and painter.
Guy Siner (Lieutenant Gruber)
Born in Manhattan, New York City, Guy Siner trained
at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts
in London. He has now become a household name
in the UK. He has worked in theatre, television and
film, with one of his most memorable roles being
his portrayal of Lieutenant Gruber in ‘Allo ‘Allo!.
Lieutenant Grubber was assistant-in-the-field to
General Erich Von Klinkerhoffen and appeared in a
total of 84 episodes in the show. Grubber was a huge
fan of art and was eventually ordered by Colonel
Erich Von Strohm to make copies of the The Fallen
Madonna. He also used an armoured car, which
he nicknamed his “little tank” and later become a
successful art dealer after the war ended.
Guy Siner can also more recently be seen as
Mr. Whitmore in the Sky Atlantic television series,
Mr Sloane.
Kim Hartman (Private Helga Geerhart)
Born in Hammersmith, London, Kim Hartman
studied at both the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry
and the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts
in London. She has starred in multiple television
shows including Casualty and the BBC classic
Grange Hill. She played Helga in ‘Allo ‘Allo! for all 85
episodes. Helga was the secretary of Colonel Erich
Von Strohm and was often required to disguise
herself during special operation missions. She was
never afraid to do what it took to get the mission
done and after the war it was revealed that she had
married Lieutenant Gruber.
Aside from acting, Kim has also directed a
number of theatre plays, including The Comedy of
Errors and A Jovial Crew.
9
‘Allo ‘Allo!
Carole Ashby (Louise)
known to have a fondness for rats, simply because
they are “small, shifty and disgusting.”
Richard currently writes for publishing companies
and radio ads.
Born in Cannock, Staffordshire, Carole Ashby has
appeared in the classic 1981 Oscar winning film
Chariots of Fire and two Bond films opposite Roger
Moore, earning her a Bond Girl status. From 19881992, she played the role of Louise for a total of 16
episodes in ‘Allo ‘Allo!. Louise was a member of
the communist resistance who, like many women,
fell in love with René. However, later on in the show
she became the leader of the resistance after she
overthrew the lieutenant, Denise Laroque.
Nick Zabierek
Richard Gibson (Herr Otto Flick)
Born in Kampala, Uganda, Richard Gibson was
educated at the Central School of Speech and
Drama. He gained valuable experience at a local
theatre where he caught the acting bug. He has
acted on the cinema screen where he played
Marcus Maudsley in the 1970 film The Go Between
alongside Julie Christie. Throughout series 1-8 of
‘Allo ‘Allo!, Richard played unemotional Gestapo
officer Herr Otto Flick. Otto was introduced as a
threatening character, yet he later fell in love with
Helga, though he rarely showed it. He was also

GOLDFINGER
50TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION
W
hile one can argue forever on whether it
is the greatest James Bond movie ever
made, there is no doubt that Goldfinger is
the most iconic. Made 50 years ago as the third in
the series, Goldfinger is usually the reference point
everyone has in their heads when they think of 007.
It’s no wonder why. The car was the immortal
Aston Martin DB5, complete with gadgets,
including the memorable ejector seat. The bad
guy, Auric Goldfinger, was a man who was
enamoured with gold so much that it was in his
name and on his Rolls Royce. The henchman,
Oddjob, was a ruthless powerhouse of a butler
who just so happened to wield a razor-rimmed
bowler hat with a tendency to be thrown at heads
to be sliced. James Bond was tied to a table with
a laser cutting towards a place to shine where the
sun doesn’t. Shirley Bassey sings the catchiest
theme song. All these things and more, but of
course, one can’t forget about the women.
MCM Birmingham Comic Con has in fact
managed to bring together every single iconic
Bond Girl from Goldfinger, and that makes for one
heck of a line-up. It puts things into perspective
when you consider that each part is integral to
the film’s iconic status.
Nadja Regin is first, playing Bonita in the film. A
small role but still memorable, she shares time with
Sean Connery’s 007 before the opening credits
roll, retiring for the night after some entertaining
dancing. It is through her eyes Bond catches a
glimpse of an attacker from behind, which allows
Connery to leap into action with an intense fist fight
that ends with the bad guy frying in a bathtub and
Bond leaving with one of his many witty quips.
Margret Nolan is there for Bond after the opening
titles in another short role, playing Dink, a character
that is used to re-establish the pampered gentleman
lifestyle the James Bond of the 1960s led. With old
friend and colleague Felix Leiter tracking down 007,
it’s Connery’s “A little bit lower darling” that nabs
the FBI agent’s attention, leading him to Dink giving
Connery a back massage near the pool. While her
screen time was limited, she is one of the many
women in the film that make Bond Bond.
But Shirley Eaton is where things really get
interesting. She is up there with Ursula Andress as
the Bond Girl. After Bond does what Bond does
best – playing cool and charming to get Eaton’s
character Jill Masterson to help screw Goldfinger
out of winning a card game he’s trying to cheat
at – Eaton pays the price. It is one of cinema’s
greatest shots: Shirley Eaton, dead on the bed,
painted head to toe in gold. Sure, the science of
her cinematic death is questionable, but there’s
no mistaking that her demise and presentation is
11
)QNFƅPIGT
just one of the many reasons why Goldfinger is
such a special film.
A death like that in a Bond film is not met without
a quest for revenge, and Tania Mallett gives us
just that. She plays Tilly Masterson, the sister of
24-carat dead Jill Masterson. Her time with Bond is
quite extensive, from a failed assassination attempt
on Goldfinger to a brilliant driving sequence that
implemented the Aston Martin’s tyre slashers, to her
own tragic demise at the hands – or, hat – of Oddjob.
She was on equal footing with Connery’s Bond, and
while her head was clouded with revenge, the two
did as well as they could teaming up together, before
a certain bowler hat made quick end of that.
But of course, in all the many iconic sequences
and details that Goldfinger has in its 110 minutes
of screen time, there’s no ignoring that it has the
most James Bond of Bond Girls names ever in it.
The one. The only. Pussy Galore. Played by Honor
Blackman. You’re not dreaming; that’s the name.
The mastermind behind henchwoman
organisation Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus – of which
she is joined by Caron Gardner, who plays a fellow
Flying Circus pilot, Galore is at first foe to James
Bond, working as pilot for Auric Goldfinger. Adept
at hand-to-hand combat as seen during a tussle
with 007 in the film, Bond eventually manages to get
the upper hand and in turn soon sways her towards
working for the good guys. Without Pussy Galore,
the integral twist in what escalates to the climax
would not exist. In managing to recruit Galore and
her Flying Circus, James Bond can actually save
the day. For one has to remember – before that
possibility 007 had crashed his Aston because of
getting confused by its own reflection in a mirror, and
he only managed to escape being cut in half by a
laser because of his keen hearing.
Each of these women – Nadja Regin, Margaret
Nolan, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallett, Caron Gardner,
and Honor Blackman – are part of the foundation
of why Goldfinger is the iconic Bond movie and
why James Bond is the character and franchise it
is today. Without each and every single one of their
roles, the film wouldn’t be the near masterpiece of
spy cinema that it is. They are a snapshot of the
world of the 1960s and of the time Sean Connery
was Bond.
It’s just a shame the franchise almost never
gets the Academy recognition it deserves. Oscars
and James Bond are an elusive combination, but
Goldfinger showed that it was possible. Normal
Wanstall, who is also present at MCM Birmingham
Comic Con, won the first ever Oscar for the Bond
franchise, for Best Sound Effects Editing. And
rightfully so, because every note of Goldfinger is
pitch perfect. Even 50 years on.

Under The Dome

ased on the 2009 Stephen King novel of the
same name, Under the Dome is produced by
the American television network CBS. It was
adapted for TV by Brian K. Vaughan, who previously
worked as a writer and producer on the hit series Lost.
The story takes place in Maine, Stephen King’s
beloved home state, and focuses on residents of a
fictional town called Chester’s Mill. The inhabitants
suddenly find themselves caught beneath a
mysterious, clear, spherical force field, causing panic
and fear as they are left trapped in while the rest of
civilisation is locked out and left to look on.
Under the Dome originally aired on CBS in June
2013, with a hugely entertaining pilot episode
featuring stunning visual effects of trucks and
aeroplanes colliding with the invisible dome. One
of the more notable special effects, often used in
weekly recaps, sees a cow being cut in half by the
dome when it first lands: it might well remind you of
a sculpture straight out of a Damien Hirst exhibition.
When the viewing figures for the pilot were later
revealed, it was estimated to have pulled in over 13.5
million viewers, smashing CBS records.
The show’s stellar cast is made up of top tier
talent such as Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), who plays
the lead character, Dale “Barbie” Barbara, and Dean
Norris (Breaking Bad) who plays Selectman James
‘Big Jim’ Rennie, a role that puts him in charge of
running Chester’s Mill. Rachelle Lefevre takes up the
mantle of the series’ leading lady, playing discredited
journalist Julia Shumway.
The show also focuses on two teenagers, Joe
McAlister (Colin Ford) and Norrie Calvert-Hill
(Mackenzie Lintz), both of whom are struggling
18
Under The Dome
to make sense of their place in the world. Joe
in particular is separated from his parents, who
are outside the dome. He finds comfort in his
relationship with Norrie, with the both of them quickly
realising that they have an unusual connection to the
dome. Notably, they randomly have uncontrollable
seizures during which they repeat the phrase, “pink
stars are falling.”
The first season saw Joe and Norrie sharing this
unusual connection with Joe’s sister Angie (Britt
Robertson) and her ‘on-off’ boyfriend James “Junior”
Rennie. Together they realise that they are the ‘Four
Hands’ that hold up the dome.
The second season of the show has already
finished airing in the US and just recently came to an
end on Channel 5 in the UK. The season showcased
plenty of exciting scenarios and shocking plot
twists. Certain characters meet an unfortunate end;
someone turns out to actually be alive (it turns out
that Junior’s mother, Pauline (Sherry Stringfield), had
‘faked’ her death), while a few manage to make their
way through a tunnel that takes them to Zenith, a
city outside of the dome. Without giving too much
away, the season two finale saw the dome slowly
contracting as the people of Chester’s Mill are led
down a crater.
CBS announced in October that the show has
been renewed for a third season, however, you
will have to endure quite a wait, for it won’t air till
sometime in the middle of 2015.
Until then, to help bridge the gap, star Colin Ford is
at MCM Birmingham Comic Con. If you ask, he might
be able to offer a few hints as to what’s in store in
season three. Before starring in Under the Dome, Ford
got his first lead role in the film Dog Days of Summer
(2007), appearing alongside Will Patton. He would
later portray a young Sam Winchester in episodes of
the TV series Supernatural (2005- ). He also voiced
the lead character Jake in Disney’s animated series
Jake and the Never Land Pirates (2011- ) and starred
alongside Matt Damon and Elle Fanning in Cameron
Crowe’s comedy-drama film We Bought A Zoo (2011).
When speaking to MCM Buzz, Ford revealed
how he and co-star Mackenzie Lintz started reading
Stephen King’s novel upon which Under the Dome
is based, only to realise that their characters on the
show deviated from those in the book. “I would hate
to read Joe as one character, and love him as that
character, and not be able to play him onscreen that
way,” said Ford. “I just want to be able to do Joe
justice, by playing him as the writers want me to.”
Attendees will be able to meet/see Colin
throughout the event as he will be taking part
in various panels, photo shoots and signings
throughout MCM Birmingham Comic Con.
Until then if you want to catch up with Under the
Dome, you can view the series on Amazon Prime
Instant Video.

M
Vic
Y
ou could be forgiven for not recognising him
at first, since despite having performed in
numerous stage and screen productions, Vic
Mignogna is much better known for his voice than
for his face. Yet when it comes to all things geek,
there aren’t many people busier.
Even the most cursory glance over Mignogna’s
website (that’s www.vicsworld.net) reveals the
multi-talented man’s dazzlingly diverse
resume, as well as his characteristically
quirky sense of humour and his
bucketloads of enthusiasm. If you know
your video games, cartoons or fan films, it’s
unlikely that you won’t be familiar with at
least some of his work.
Perhaps most widely known for
his anime work, Mignogna’s back
catalogue includes a whole range of major titles
like Fullmetal Alchemist (Edward Elric), Dragon
Ball Z (Broly, Burter), Bleach (Ikkaku Madarame,
Senbonzakura, Hozukimaru), Naruto Shippuden
(Nagato, Fuen), Ouran High School Host Club
(Tamaki Suou) and Pokémon (Scooter, Sylvester,
Keldeo), amongst many others. Vic’s voice has
also featured in various video games, including
Sonic Colours (E-123 Omega), Marvel Heroes (The
Watcher), Final Fantasy XIII-2 (additional voices) as
well as several Dragon Ball Z and Naruto games.
In an interview with Anime News Network in 2005,
Mignogna ambitiously declared that he aims, “to
record at all of the major places where dubbing is
done”. His work has earned him some well-deserved
recognition from both fans and the industry: in 2007,
he was awarded Best Actor in the American Anime
Awards for his leading role in Fullmetal Alchemist.
It doesn’t stop there, however. Mignogna is also
a graphic designer, a music producer, a songwriter
and a director and producer of videos and films.
It’s clear, too, that he dedicates an awful lot of his
time to his fans: speaking to LA Weekly in 2009,
Mignogna estimated that he attends around 15-25
conventions every year, at which he hosts Q&A
panels, signs autographs and mingles with the
crowds. In 2012, Mignogna explained to MCM Buzz
how much he values his fans, saying that “the love,
support, kindness and encouragement that I receive
from fans all over the world is PRICELESS. I wouldn’t
trade it for anything in the world.” Little wonder, then,
that he has developed a very loyal following.
A huge sci-fi fan raised on a steady diet of epic
space adventures, he has, over the years, become
involved with different projects that have allowed him
to indulge his passion for Star Trek. After directing
two episodes of fan series Star Trek: Phase II (titled
“Enemy: Starfleet” and “KITUMBA”), and playing
a couple of minor characters in the show, he later
embarked on his own project with Star Trek fan
production group Far From Home. Together, they
26
Vic Mignogna
created Star Trek Continues, a web series that picks
up the story of the Starship Enterprise where the
original TV series left off. Mignogna directs the show,
as well as taking the lead as Captain James T. Kirk,
a chance to play his long-term hero which he has
described as “a privilege” and “fulfilling a childhood
dream”. He is joined on set by fellow voice actors
Todd Haberkorn and Chuck Huber who play the
captain’s faithful friend and second-in-command,
Spock, and the ship’s snarky medical officer,
Leonard McCoy, respectively. Chris Doohan also
takes up his father’s mantle in the role of Scottie. To
date, the series consists of three full-length episodes
and three short vignettes as well as a ton of
behind-the-scenes content, hopefully with lots
more to come. The critically acclaimed show has
now won multiple awards, including from Burbank
International Film Festival, LoneStarCon 3 and The
Geekie Awards. You can watch all the episodes
released so far at www.startrekcontinues.com.
Fans of Vic’s work may also be interested to
know that he has recently released a live concert
DVD, featuring performances of a range of classic
anime songs, in addition to some of his own original
work. It also includes the rarely seen Fullmetal
Fantasy, a live-action version of Fullmetal Alchemist
which sees the anime voice cast cosplaying their
characters. Vic Mignogna In Concert is available to
purchase from the Risembool Rangers online store.

MC Comic
Con returns and makes its debut at
Birmingham, offering a showcase of the
latest and greatest in indie gaming to gamers.
With indie games going from strength to strength
at an incredible pace over the last few years,
it’s amazing to see smaller, more focused and
inventive games promoting innovation over big
budget marketing schemes and annualised,
multi-studio franchises.
Indie games are powered by the passion of
their creators, usually small groups of developers
or individuals, who don’t have to worry about
appealing to demographics or having their
designs run by focus groups. It’s all about the
ideas, distilling them in new and interesting ways,
and getting the games out there in the hands
of gamers in new ways - Kickstarter and Early
Access allow studios to sell access to projects
early to interested gamers, giving everyone a
chance to provide feedback and shape projects.
The rise of digital distribution and the growing
recognition of smaller projects by game publishers
and format holders means it’s approaching a
golden age for the indie, and if you swing by the
Go Indie Games stand this weekend you can
check out the following awesome projects:
LUMO DELIVERIES INC.
Developer: Lumo Developments
Brought to you by the same minds that inflicted
both Kumo Lumo and Paper Titans on millions of
unsuspecting mobile devices, Lumo Deliveries
Inc. is the graphic-punk mobile management game
that combines the most compelling gameplay on
the planet with the most dangerous use of colour
and bongo drums you’ll ever experience.
28
Go Indie Games
AMAZING FROG?
Developer: Fayju
Swindon is a magical place, as anyone on Swindon
council’s tourism board will tell you. Amazing Frog?
sets it “Hardcore Parkour openworld buffet of
bonkers physics sandbox” in a ridiculous version
of Wiltshire’s wonderland for some reason, so you
can fire yourself out of cannons, dive off buildings,
shoot up to three friends, get “Mad Ups” from
bouncy castles and generally mess around as a
flatulent frog. This is one ludicrous game that has to
be experienced.
HORIZON SHIFT
Developer: Flump Studios
The arcade shooter is a genre that’s never really
gone out of fashion: there’s just something instantly
compelling about it. Horizon Shift twists it in a
unique way, charging you with defending your
horizon from hordes of enemy ships from the centre
of the screen, mixing in
platforming elements,
insane boss battles
and awesome music in
ten different, addictive
game modes.
TERRATECH
Developer: TerraTech
As a prospector starting out on a procedurally
generated exo-planet, TerraTech is a galactic
exploration game where you need to build an
empire from the ground up. You shape your
journey the way you want to, research the
technologies you want and allying yourself with
various corporations to create a burgeoning
fleet in the lawless frontier of space.

Go Indie Games
VR KARTS
SINEWAVE
Developer: Viewpoint Games
Developer: Mad Fellows
Virtual Reality is no longer a byword for ridiculous
early-’90s nightmares, thanks to the Oculus Rift
and Sony’s Project Morpheus. Viewpoint Games is
getting in on the future of interactive entertainment
in a very approachable way with VR Karts, an online
kart racer with bright, vivid race courses built to
take advantages of the new generation of VR tech.
Could this be the future of racing games?
Two man indie maestros Mad Fellows have been
busy beavering away at SineWave (previously
known as Salvage), a rhythm action game for
touchscreen systems. Your aim is to navigate your
ship through musically-synchronised environments,
swiping to move and tapping to shoot as you try
to collect as much salvage as possible. Featuring
music by Noisia, Zomboy and SKisM.
