The William Levine Collection, [Box #, Folder #], Pritzker Military Museum & Library, Chicago, IL English Kim Connelly Hicks, 2014; Biographical Note William Levine was born on July 1st, 1915 in Duluth, Minnesota to Joseph and Sadie Levine. Levine graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1937 and worked in retail sales prior to being drafted into the United States Army in 1942. Levine initially attended Army Officer Candidate School and graduated in May of 1943. Beginning active duty, Levine served with the 34th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) Group as an intelligence officer. During his military service with the 34th AAA Group, Levine participated in the D-Day invasion on Utah Beach and the liberation of the German concentration camp Dachau. Levine received the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Medal. Levine was honorably discharged in 1946, yet continued to serve in the Army Reserves for another 30 years achieving the rank of Major General. In the Army Reserves, Levine served as an officer for the XIV (14th) Corps until the corps was deactivated in 1967. Levine was then appointed commanding general of the United States Army's 84th Division (Training). Levine retired from the Army at the rank of Major General in 1975, but remained active with veterans as the chairman of a retired officers association for the Army in the Midwest. By the 1980s, Levine was speaking publicly about his experience liberating Dachau, as a soldier, American, and Jew. William Levine died in 2013 at the age of 97. Scope and Content of the Collection The William Levine Collections includes military documents, military publications, personal papers, photographs, maps and newspapers related the military service of William Levine from World War II through the Army Reserves. The majority of the collection focuses on Levine’s military service from 1955 to 1980 and in the Army Reserves. Levine's personal papers contains personal and professional documents, including correspondence, speeches, certificates and awards, and journals. The collection includes pins, patches, medals, plaques, uniforms and uniform pieces, flags, and memorabilia. Arrangement The collection arrived in with limited original order. Original order has been maintained where possible; however the majority of order has been created by the PMML staff. The collection consists of seven series: Series One: Military Documents, 1942-1975, n.d. These documents pertain to William Levine's military service in the United States Army. The series include military orders, officer reports, correspondences, certificates, qualification records, and field notes. The documents also include firearm registration records and military rosters from the 1940s. Series Two: Military Publications, 1943-2005, n.d. The items in the Military Publications series include newsletters and pamphlets from the War Department, Department of the Army, American Historical Association, and other editors. Additionally, the series includes a few copies of The Caltrop News and Custer Spirit. Other documents include publications on the United States Army, the Army Reserve, a conference notebook on race relations and equal opportunities in the military, and World War II. Series Three: Copies of Military Documents from National Personnel Record Center at the National Archives and Records Administration, 2001-2013, n.d. The documents in this series were obtained by the Levine family from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The series includes correspondence with individuals at NARA. The bulk of the materials are copies of the 34th AAA Group Report of Operation from between January 1945 to December 1945. Series Four: Personal Papers, 1945-2005, n.d. These documents pertain to William Levine's personal and professional activities. The series includes correspondence between Levine and family members, correspondence regarding Levine's promotion to Major General and retirement, speeches by Levine, biographical materials, certificates and awards, and journals. Additionally, the series includes items collected by William Levine including; newspaper clippings, copies of Levine family documents, German "Olympia 1936" collector cards, "Unsere Waffen" German S.S. and French postcards, and papers related to Maurice Pirot. Miscellaneous items include holiday menus by the 34th AAA Group during World War II and calling cards. Series Five: Photographs, Scrapbooks, and Maps, 1945-1986, n.d. This series includes photographs found loose in the collection and those organized in binders with papers ("scrapbooks"), and also hand drawn and professional maps. The majority of photographs reflect General Levine's service in the Army Reserves. Series Six: Oversized Items, 1944-2012, n.d. Newspapers and newspaper clippings comprise the majority of the Oversized Items series. Publications include Minnesota and North Carolina newspapers, The Stars and Stripes, Life, and Yank. The series also includes military and civilian related certificates, maps, and posters. Series Seven: Restricted, 1967-1991, n.d. Rights: Copyrights held by Rhoda Levine were transferred to the Pritzker Military Library. All other rights are held by the author or publisher. Users assume responsibility for following copyright laws as established by US Code Title 17. Restricted Items: Restricted items in this collection consist of military rosters containing personnel information. Items will be restricted until 2066.
