SAFD Flower Press www.safdhouston.org An educational, non-profit organization for floral designers August 2010 Lana’s Lines I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. Are you ready to start thinking about Fall and SAFD? I hope so because we have a lot of great events starting to take place for our members and guests. We wanted to get out as much information to you as early as possible so you can mark your calendars for the upcoming events. As your new President for the 2010-2011 year, I am excited to be working with a group of very talented Board members who have many wonderful ideas to share. Tabletop 2011 is also in the early planning stages. Our first meeting in September will be exciting and fun as we go to Darryl Murchison’s Design Studio to view breathtaking tablescapes and party designs and enjoy a program with Darryl and his team of talented designers. You will not want to miss this – trust me!! I would like to briefly tell you a little about myself and my goals as SAFD President. I am a fulltime floral and wedding designer after having spent over 30 years in the legal field in human resources and as a paralegal. I have been a member of SAFD since 2007, and have held a Board position since September, 2007. I am also an active member of Texas State Florists Association and Allied Florists of Houston. My passion is flowers and making people happy. And even though some of my work includes sympathy tributes, my husband reminds me many times, “Don’t be sad, you are making beautiful flowers for them.” I welcome any opportunity to bring floral design and new techniques to anyone who is interested in learning, and SAFD Flower Press that is what SAFD is all The inside story... about. Lois is a recipient of one of SAFD’s Scholarships, and was privileged to receive an invitation to conduct a workshop. The inspiration for the workshop came from a sympathy flower workshop Lois attended at the 2008 Texas State Convention. The beauLois Myer leads a workshop on tiful arrangement Sympathy Arrangements presented there was made of live plants and flowers and was longlasting. Lois was pleased to share with SAFD members the knowledge she gained at the 2008 convention by conducting the May Sympathy Flower Workshop. you must mark your calendar for the next convention in July of 2011, as it will be held at the Woodlands Marriott. Make it a point to come and see the beautiful arrangements, meet the many interesting teachers, and attend workshops. Isn’t it fun to be a member of SAFD? Lois has truly enjoyed her membership. Sympathy arrangements are one of the first things one thinks of upon hearing of a friend or family’s loss. A living arrangement such as this will bring comfort and assurance of your compassion to the recipient for some time. This year Lois attended the Texas State Convention in San Marcus and greatly enjoyed the event. Lois says SAFD Flower Press 2010—2011: Issue 1 Page 3 May Community Affairs Last Workshop — Lois Maier The last Community Affairs workshop for the current year was held in May of 2010. Lois Maier and Marilyn Hunter headed up the workshop at Southwell, a senior center in Spring, Texas. In the photos are some of the women that attended the workshop, holding arrangements they made. The flowers used were pink roses and baby’s breath. The arrangements turned out beautifully and the ladies took their arrangements home. The demonstration arrangements were left at Southwell for the residents to enjoy. SAFD MISSION STATEMENT SAFD is a non-profit organization authorized under the IRS Code Section 501(C)(3). SAFD promotes the study and enjoyment of floral design through volunteerism, educational programs and community involvement. Monthly programs consist of a featured speaker, top floral designer, or hands-on classes in fresh/silk arrangements. Raffles are held for the arrangements and the proceeds are used for the charities supported by SAFD. COMMUNITY AFFAIRS A new year is beginning for SAFD in September. This means our volunteer season is upon us and many opportunities are available for you to become involved both to learn new skills and to create beautiful arrangements that will enrich the lives of others and bring joy to yourself as well. Won’t you consider participating in the Community Affairs workshops? You are sure to have fun. OUR MOTTO We learn how, share the knowledge, and then give it away.
