With the winter months and when there is an accumulation of snow, a reminder to all that the golf course is not open for sledding. Members may sled with their children on the hill below the paddle tennis courts. Our greens staff does a great job of keeping the parking lots plowed, sidewalks cleared and the paddle tennis courts clear of snow and ice. If you have an early morning or late evening court reservation, and are not going to come, please inform the fitness center so that our staff does not prioritize clearing the courts when they could be getting sidewalks and roadways clear. Construction will begin on the function entrance January 7 th and the porte cochere, hallway, Solarium and restrooms will be out of operation until late March. Please use the member entrance when coming to the Club for not only member dining but for member events as well. The ballroom will be available for functions as will the Second Floor Lounge and Centennial Room. Winter hours will commence at the Club with the only change being that there will be no dinner service on Sunday evening. The Club will be open normal hours Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and will serve Sunday Brunch. Please look in the newsletter for operating hours for specific areas such as the golf practice facility and pro shop, fitness and paddle tennis. There are many member activities upcoming in January and February such as the adult winter party, family bingo, and wine dinners. The normal close down period will be in late February and early March as the schedules for spring breaks have changed with Upper Arlington and Ohio State. As the tragedies of Newtown, CT and the firefighters in New York are fresh in our minds, our thoughts and prayers go out to those communities. It makes us especially appreciate the many blessings we have here in our community of families at Scioto Country Club. I hope 2013 will be a most joyous and safe year for all of you. POSTING A SCORE AS A TOURNAMENT SCORE The United States Golf Association defines a Tournament Score as a score made in a competition organized and conducted by the committee in charge of the competition. The competition must identify a winner(s) based on stipulated round(s), and must be played under the principals of the rules of golf. Routine events, such as regular play days, normally are not to be designated as T-Scores because they are not significant in the traditions, schedules, formats and membership of the Club. The USGA Handicap System is based around the concept of a player’s potential, and scores made in a tournament setting can provide a very good indication of such potential. One of the procedures within the System deals with identifying players who have at least two exceptional tournament scores in their scoring record (an exceptional score is defined as a score with a differential of 3.0 or more below the player current Handicap Index). The number of total eligible tournament scores in a player’s scoring record is one of the factors used in determining if a player qualifies for a handicap reduction, and if so, the amount of reduction. The USGA and Scioto Country Club HDCP Committee are looking to identify significant events where a player would have much more rising on the outcome of the round compared to a casual round of golf. So a club championship, memberguest, etc. would be the type of event meeting this requirement. In addition, qualifying round(s) for significant events suc h as local, regional or state championships would all typically meet the requirement for a tournament score. Note: When participating in a match play event, the following procedure should be followed to compute a tournament score: A player who starts, but does not complete a hole or is conceded a stroke must record for handicap purposes the most likely score. There is no limit to the number of unfinished holes a player may have in a round. Listed below are the 2013 Tournaments that will be entered as a Tournament Score: Men’s Opening Day - Two Best Balls of Four Old Pal Qualifier and Event Men’s Member-Member - 2nd Round Only Men’s Invitational Senior Swat Guest Day Senior Club Championship Men’s Club Championship & Qualifier Senior Swat Round-Up Men’s Fall Round-Up Scioto Cup Qualifiers Have a Happy New Year! We have already started many of our processes to help us prepare for next year. These include, but are not limited to, Graden and aerification of the greens, tees and approaches, sodding cart path ends, tree removal and planting, and miscellaneous construction projects. During these next few articles, we will pick an area of focus and this month will be the greens. GREENS: The summer of 2012 provided many challenges for the Greens staff. It was the second hottest summer on record. All of our mowing and rolling practices were done with a focus on consistency. Each day we measured the speed on #1 and #12 greens. The reason #1 is used is because it is the first green we do our processes on and #12 is used because it is toward the end our morning routine. We compare these numbers to make sure nothing has changed and the greens are similar in speed. From time to time we will check other greens on the course to make sure we have consistency. We use the Stimpmeter to measure the speed of the greens. The Stimpmeter is a 3 foot aluminum piece of metal with a V channel and a notch where the ball sits. We find a flat area on the green’s surface. The end of the Stimpmeter is lifted until the ball rolls off of the notch. This is repeated three times and measured. The process is then repeated in the opposite direction. We then take the numbers and get an average of the six balls. This number is a measurement in feet of how far the ball rolled. To keep our consistent speeds, we use processes such as double cutting, rolling and application of growth regulators to keep the putting surfaces as consistent as possible throughout the season. The most important element to control when navigating through tough environmental conditions is water. As a staff, there is a common philosophy of providing firm and fast playing conditions. Hand held moisture sensors are used to check areas of greens to make sure that we are not putting down too much water. We will also use wireless buried sensors to test the deep areas of the greens. These sensors allow us to manage the total water volume of the green and predict when to use the sprinklers to flush or just to raise the water volume slightly when we are approaching an event so we can have the best, most consistent playing conditions throughout the event. The aerification practices help us condition the plant and rootzone for the challenging times of year. If we have excessive organic matter in the top inch of the profile, it does not matter how good the greens are underneath. The Graden, aerification and spiking throughout the season help limit the buildup of this organic matter. As a general rule of thumb, we should disrupt 20 or 30 percent of the surface area to just keep pace with the organic accumulation. We also test each inch of the profile to quantify and qualify how deep and how often we should Graden and aerify. When we have a proper balance between air holding (large pores) and water holdings (small pores), there is good gas exchange and aeration in the soil. This allows for roots to grow which promotes a healthy plant and with this, we can produce firm and fast playing surfaces. Our club competed in its first ever USA Swimming sanctioned indoor meet. Thirteen young swimmers made quite a splash at the New Albany Penguin Plunge! Tim and Todd were impressed by the competitive efforts that each swimmer made and Scioto had many heat winners! The highlight of the meet for Scioto was Mimi Purdum achieving a State Junior Olympic qualifying time in her 50 yard Breaststroke event. Along with Mimi, the other competing swimmers were Jack, Caden, Caroline and Jimmy Columbo, Grant and Emma Mitchell, Jack Lowe, Aiden Zieg, Elle, Jack and Reagen Nolan, and Maggie Best. Congratulations to all of our swimmers for their great performances and to all the coaches involved. Scioto has 17 Sharks competing at Upper Arlington on January 5 th and 6th. Go Sharks! PADDLE NEWS In spite of the warmer than normal weather this time of year, the courts have had much play. Men’s Night is off to a great start with 2 to 4 courts being used each Wednesday night as more new members are enjoying this fun paced sport. The Columbus Men’s League has really been a hit as Scioto is the only club with 2 teams. We have had a couple of great Mixed events that have taken up all four courts. The paddle hut is a great way to get out and have a fun night of paddle with great food, drinks and of course a fire to stay warm. Please remember to sign up for a court by calling the Fitness Center at 485-1132.
