Fall offers us brilliant shows of color and fun
for the whole family. The leaves are at their
spectacular best, from mid-September
through the end of October. Enjoy fall's
breathtaking foliage of flaming colors. Fall is
the perfect time for a drive in search of the
perfect antiques, or a trip to a farm stand or
pumpkin patch to pick out the perfect
pumpkin. Bring some friends to a county fair,
take a hot air balloon ride, enjoy an arts
and crafts festival, or get in that last round of
golf.
We wind up our 2010 season of fun events
with the Holiday Greens Sale in November
and cap off the year with our fabulous
Holiday Luncheon.
Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the
Annual Holiday Luncheon at Angelica’s
on December 7th. See Page 39 for the

The DAC has one opening on the Board.
There is one opening on the Board of Directors! This is your opportunity to get involved in planning social
activities to continue the camaraderie enjoyed by directory employees during their days with the Directory department;
to assist in the publishing of a membership directory, newsletter and web site allowing members to keep in touch with
friends made over the years.
The lifeblood of the Directory Alumni Council is its membership and its heart is the volunteer Board of Directors. If
you are the type of person who seeks out and acts on solution, works well both independently and within a team, and
isn't afraid of a little hard work, this may be a great opportunity for you. It is the membership that votes to put people
on the Board, for a three year term, and voting takes place at the Annual Meeting in April.
Some positions on the board have set responsibilities, such as Treasurer, Secretary, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, and
these positions are decided each term by the Board of Directors. For most new Directors, their responsibilities include
running 1 event per year, assisting one of the other Directors with large projects from time to time, and familiarizing
themselves with the working of the Board with an eye to taking on more responsibilities in the next term.
The DAC Board of Directors meets one day a month from January to June and September to November. Meetings
generally run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Are you able to accept this commitment?

What can I do to increase membership?
Our Directory Alumni Council was founded on November 23, 1987 by a wonderful group of people like
you, who thought it might be nice to stay in touch with some of their friends after they have left the
company. You don’t have to be of retirement age to join. If you ever worked in Directory, at any
time, we welcome your membership in the Directory Alumni Council.
While the duties of the officers are spelled out clearly, it is incumbent upon everyone to recruit and help
grow the DAC. The DAC helps meet the social and communications needs of retirees. Every member can
help by spreading the word about the DAC, and by personally signing up former Directory employees who
have not yet heard of the Directory Alumni Council, and therefore have not had the opportunity to join.
Many people transferred to other companies as NYNEX/Bell Atlantic/Verizon/Idearc/SuperMedia altered
its business model, and lost contact with their membership opportunities. The company will not help us
toward this end by supplying former employee names or addresses (as a matter of confidentiality), nor will
they advise active employees that we exist. Therefore, membership growth is a real priority as we face the
issues that the future is certain to present.
If you know of others who worked in Directory, at any time, we welcome their membership in the

The Directory Alumni
Council
The Telephone Company, like other
major corporations consists of many
divisions.
Our division, the
Directory Department, also known
as Yellow Pages and SuperPages,
services the business community by
selling Yellow and White Pages
advertising.
There are various
groups within Directory: sales
representatives, artists, clerical
personal, public affairs, legal,
finance, marketing, information
systems,
customer
relations,
network, and real estate. Through
teamwork these groups expand the
company into new domestic and
global markets.
So it was that on November 23,
1987 a group of 8 Yellow Page
sales people who truly loved their
profession, decided they would
always enjoy being a part of this
exciting business, even after they
retired, by keeping in touch with
their past.
This desire to stay connected lead
to the formation of the Directory
Alumni Council!

Room
Well, Lulu stole the show when she
helped Claire Palmer with drawing
tickets for the lucky winners of both
the auction and the 50/50 which
won by Mike Walos.

It was lots of fun seeing old friends,
and meeting new ones as well.
Thank goodness there was air
conditioning in the hall.
Hello Everyone!
Do you believe its fall already,
where did our summer go? We plan
all winter for summer, and boom it‘s
gone before you know it.
My summer was much like yours, I
am sure, with family gatherings,
class reunions, cookouts, etc. I am
sure our ―Snow Bird‖ friends were
surprised
with
the
unusual
temperatures of 90 + degrees we had
on many days. However, New
England falls are just beautiful, with
many days ahead for fun things to
enjoy!!
At our past board meeting on
September 15th we were very
pleased to welcome Patricia
(Tricia) Savage as the newest
member of the DAC Board of
Directors. Welcome Tricia!
Two of this past summer events
included the Lobster Bake and
Annual Cookout. We had a fun time
with our DAC members.
First we had a Lobster Bake with all
the fixings that was really terrific!
All of our guests were really
pleased. Some even were able to
buy extra meals to take home.
Our next event was our Annual
Cookout. Another great day of good
food, friends, and outdoor games,
and of course our raffle. George
and Yvonne Anderson came with
their darling granddaughter Lulu
who they happened to be babysitting
the day of our cookout.
If you didn‘t come, you missed two
great fun events.
Special thanks to Sandy Noe and
Claire Palmer for all the work that
goes into these great events.
Kate Skafidas, a representative
from our NMTW Credit Union also
attended the Lobster Bake, and
brought a gift for all the guests.
Kate got to meet everyone in person
and really enjoyed her visit. Kate
tells us that the Credit Union has
opened another new office, located
in Haverhill, MA. If you live in that
area she invites you to stop in and
see the new office. It‘s located at 20
Cushing Ave, Haverhill.
The NMTW Credit Union now has
five locations, Danvers, 2 in Lowell,
Framingham and now Haverhill.
It‘s a great place to go when you
need financial services. They are all
so friendly there.

will be our Annual Holiday
Luncheon. Save The Date Now!

one of our largest attended events of
the year. Plan now to attend and
bring a guest if you like.
Chairing this popular event is Bob
Odachowski, one of our board
members along with much help
from other board members as well.

Bob has been doing this event for a
few years now, and does a great
job!!

George Anderson will be running
the popular Sports Auction. In
addition to tickets to sports games,
we will have sports items and other
valuable prizes. So come prepared
with your check book for this
popular auction.
I want to share with you that Bob
and his wife Alice are very blessed
grand parents. Their son Matthew
and wife Kim who live in Shelburne
VT became parents of a premature
baby girl weighing only 3 ½ lbs at
birth. Her name is Martha Jean.
She is now 7 months old and is now
weighing 12 lbs.
As proud
grandfather Bob say‘s ―she‘s
holding her own now.‖
Bob and Alice have another
daughter Linda who with her
husband lives in Arlington. They
have 2 children. A baby girl one
year old, who‘s very active and full
of fun and a four year old son who
just started pre-school. So there is
lots of family fun in the Odachowski
family these days.
Alice recently retired from the Lynn
School system where she taught preschool for 35 years and loved every
day of it! Now she is fulfilling her
dream of being a ―Physical Fitness
Instructor‖. Alice is working at
―Boston Fitness Center‖ and also at
the newest health club on Rte 1
called ―Latitudes‖. Alice said that
she is starting another career doing
this is something I always wanted to
do.
―Congratulations Alice‖. Keeping
fit is big business these days at any
age.
Dave Barry and his lovely wife
Joan are very active with our
Alumni Council and recently
celebrated their 50 years wedding
anniversary.
They took a year to plan a family
celebration with their 6 girls and 6
boys, plus grandchildren. A total of
21 family members were treated to
four days at the Balsams in Dixville
Notch, New Hampshire. If you
have never been folks it‘s a must
trip! Culinary students from all over
the world come to this resort to
train! The food is scrumptious!!
The Balsams offers outdoor
adventures, unique events, and
endless activities for the entire
family. Golfing, tennis, supervised
children‘s play group, horse back
riding, just about everything you
need.
Joan says the focus on the little
ones was just a joy for the entire
group. The men enjoyed golf of
course and the women just relaxed
and enjoyed the spectacular views.
The Balsams Resort is where the
first voting is done in the state of
NH each year. The voting is done
on the lower level of the hotel.
―Congratulations to a terrific couple
from all of us!!‖
I recently received a call from
Dick Jones from Barrington RI.
Dick is an active Alumni Council
member and hosts the Annual
Golf tournament at Lake Morey
in Vermont along with board
member Tony Foglia. The guys
have a wonderful time each year.
They often bring along a friend
for golf as well. I understand
their evenings are taken up with
some serious poker! Dick always
makes sure there are gifts for
everyone. They both do a great
job!!
While Dick and I were chatting
he told me how he just completed
a ―Things To Do List‖ for his
family. It seems he just lost a
loved one, and a member of that
family told Dick how the
deceased had made all the plans
for what to do in case. Dick
realized he had no such list ready
for his family. So he sat down
and finally put one together.
―WOW! Bobbie I really feel so
good now that I have done that.‖
Now the timing on Dick‘s call
was really unique. I too had just
put a ―Things To Do List‖
together for my family as well. I
had been attempting to do this for
over three years now. When I
was really ill back two years ago
I realized I had nothing done and
now I was too ill to even think
about it. So after thinking it over
and putting it off again for
another year, I finally sat down
and made a list like Dick‘s.
After all, life changes so quickly
and we owe it to our loved ones
to make our information known.
IE. Name of Insurance Company
and Tel #, Bank Box location and
key to family member, name of
Attorney, where your will or trust
is located, a list of who gets what
of your family treasures.
I lost the title to my car when I
moved 3 years ago. I had to call
the bank and get a receipt and
then go to the RMV. It cost me
$50 for a new title. These are
things I would not have thought
about before.
So like Dick Jones I now feel
relieved to know everything will
be easier for my family. Believe

me I started this project many
times, then I would go and do
something that was easier to do.
It really takes time and a lot of
thought to do.
So like Dick and me you might
want to think about a ―Things To
Do List‖. You‘ll really feel great
when it is finished.
I just spoke with past board
member and friend Joan
Champoux who is recovering
after serious health issues. She
sounds great and is still healing
after many months.
Joan wants to ―Thank‖ her many
friends for their beautiful cards
and well wishes during her long
recovery. It was great to hear
you are doing well Joan. Who
know, maybe we‘ll see you at the
Holiday Luncheon.
Last week I had lunch with past
board member and past chairman
Karen Gagne. She looks great
and is very busy with her
beautiful granddaughter having
fun! Karen stays very busy with
her ―Sea Glass Jewelry Design‖.
She does beautiful work and
enjoys this hobby so much!
Karen sends regard to her many
alumni friends. We had a three
hour and forty five minute
luncheon! Time flies when you
are having fun with good friends.
Well folks I must stop chatting
with you and leave room for dear
friend Jim Mullaney and Jim’s
Jems column.

Jeanne Ouilette Sharp always
seemed to me to be perpetually
beautiful. Speaking to her recently
just seemed to reaffirm that feeling.
Funny how some things never seem
to change. However, one thing that
has caught up to her is arthritis. Not
severe, apparently, but she uses a
cane occasionally when she‘s out of
the house.
She has a male
companion named Frank, who is a
former police officer. I‘m not sure
from which location, nor did I ask
for how long they‘ve been together.
But remembering her from far away
Scarborough, Maine I‘m sure she
made a right choice. She and Frank
are now living in Hudson, FL which
is on the West Coast near Tampa.
And, of course, she‘s now in Florida
for the foreseeable future. Good for
you, Jeanne. Down there no one
has to shovel sunshine.
One of the guys who has been
around as long as I have is Bill
Shutt and, of course, his brother,
Joe Shutt whom I don‘t know quite
as well. Bill is still somewhat active
in business but says it‘s down to a
slow three day week involving
automobile parts and they more or
less come to him instead of viceversa. But, as I said to him, he‘s
still in sales. As a plus, his wife,
Kim, does almost all the driving
whether locally or in road trips and
he says, she loves doing it in their
Lexus. It‘s kind of a funny thing but
Bill and I were kind of close friends
at our work stations, but not so
much socially. He lived and still
lives in New Hampshire. At one
point he was in Hudson now he‘s in

around for a considerable time and

Gail Roberts. In years past, she
was our Treasurer, as well as a
Board Member. Not only was she
an active member, she took the
positions seriously and always did
an outstanding job. Now she has
another full time job taking care of
her husband Ralph. Gail has been
married to Ralph for 27 years.
As I‘ve often said, writing this letter
has always been one of my pleasant
assignments because it affords me
the pleasure of speaking to people
I‘ve known for my entire 36 years in
the ―Yellow Pages‖. And, as I‘ve
also said previously, I never knew a
day in all those years when I didn‘t
enjoy going to work. It helped
working for a great Company with
great bosses and great sales and
clerical people. Probably one of the
major reasons I so enjoyed it was
being outside ―on the road‖ so to
speak, so I couldn‘t get into too
much trouble in the office. Of
course, it didn‘t hurt bringing in the
sales results that I did over the
years.
Now that I‘ve finished tooting my
own horn, let‘s look at Maggie
Belmonte. She still as pleasant a
woman as she always was and as a
matter of fact she and I agreed to
meet for lunch before I return to
Jupiter, Florida sometime in
November, but that will be too late
to make this letter. So all I can say
is stay tuned and I‘ll try to resurrect
our meeting in the next newsletter.
I keep writing about how nice it is to
talk to the people I write about and
one of those people is Joan
Champoux who always had a great

personality, and still has, even
speaking on the telephone. She too
has had medical problems, but now
she‘s back in her condo with her
boyfriend, Bob Burt. Bob has been
wonderful to her throughout her
multiple travails, and helped her to
bounce back each time. They live in
Swampscott, if you would like to
send her a greeting card.

Barbara (Bobbie) Gifford, as most
of you are aware, also writes in this
newsletter “Bobbie’s Chat Room”
and does an excellent job. I spoke
to her and, fortunately, we again
didn‘t have a conflict in who we
contacted. That in itself is kind of
short of a miracle since we both
worked pretty much with the same
people. Be that as it may, I suspect
it‘s our Irish luck that has prevented
our conflicting with each other‘s
writings. One of these days maybe
Barbara and I along with old
friends Karen Gagne and Claire
Palmer might be able to get
together for lunch possibly in
Newton, Natick or Framingham
none of which would be too far out
of the way for any of us. It would
be nice to get together.

purchased the manufacturing
rights for India. Zero Pollution
Motors has purchased the
rights for the U.S. market and
beginnings in 2011 expect to
manufacture 8,000 vehicles a
year in the United States.

other countries are currently in

For over 20 years the Lake Morey
Resort & Country Club has been the
scene of our DAC golf tournament.
Named after our first DAC President
Kenneth H. Premo, 31 participants
enjoyed three days of good times,
hospitality, and shared friendship.
Check – in time was 11:00 am on
Tuesday then off to play 18 holes of
golf. After golf everyone met in the
Hospitality Room for drinks and
snacks. Two more days of golf and
prizes of golf memorabilia, shirts,
jackets, grab bags, and money were
given out. With contests and prizes
galore everyone in attendance is a
winner, but some do earn and
receive special recognition.

This year there were nine members
of the Premo Family on hand.
The Cribbage Tournament was
bigger than ever with Lee Cheney
beating last year runner-up Ken
Premo, Jr. for the championship in
a ―Pegging Contest‖. It was a
squeaker, a come back victory!
With true ―Premo grace‖ Ken Jr.
bowed out for the second year in a
row to a relative ―unknown rookie‖
who walked away with the $50 cash
prize.
Dick Jones again acted as the MC
for all of the festivities and provided
all of the prizes and leadership for
the event!
Kudos to a great
leadership job by a super guy!
As usual, Dick will start buying the
golf prizes as soon as this year‘s
tournament is over. He shops from
Rhode Island to Florida to get the
special prizes. So far he has 32 Greg
Norman golf towels in preparation
for next year‘s tournament.
In between the awarding of prizes
George Anderson gave a great
tribute speech in memory of Ken
Premo. These stories brought tears
to the eyes of the Jones & Premo
family relatives of Ken.
The best part of Lake Morey golf is
the friendship on the golf course as
well as back in the Hospitality
Room. This was also noted by the
Critchlow family from Vermont
who came for their first outing.
All at this special event in Fairlee,
Vermont enjoyed a wonderful time.
The golf course was in superb
shape.
This event is a real
testimony to the Spirit of the DAC
and its wonderful history of
friendship and good cheer.
A continuing honor to ―one of the
best‖, Ken Premo! “Once Begun
Half Done!”

Tanglewood ConcertSunday July 11, 2010

There's no better place to enjoy the
sights, and sounds of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra than at
Tanglewood in Lenox.
On Sunday July 11th, thirty-nine
people hopped on the bus in West
Newton and headed out to
Tanglewood to enjoy great music
and beautiful scenery.
The facilities at Tanglewood are
wonderful, especially the music
shed. It is a place of restful beauty
and gentle hills.
Our day at Tanglewood turned out
to be a beautiful sunny day. The
seats in the shed were perfect and
the music spectacular.
Movies and snacks coming and
going made the trip enjoyable.

Lobster Bake

A lobster bake brings
together like no other meal.

The Propeller Club of Portsmouth
NH came to the Masonic Hall in
Ipswich with all of the equipment
and food to put on our Lobster
Bake. The Bake Team puts on
around a dozen bakes each year for
local
organizations,
and the
net proceeds from these bakes go to
support
local
maritime-related
activities such as scholarships to
cadets at the Maine Maritime
Academy, and local marine-oriented
activities. We extend a special
Thank You to Ken Blades, Sandy
Noe‘s husband, for helping the Bake
Team.
Everyone feasted on 2 lobsters, corn
on the cob, baked beans, clam
chowder, steamed clams, a hot dog,
hard boiled egg, sweet potato slices,
boiled onions, ice tea and lemonade.
Topped off with watermelon for
dessert!
After the meal we had a 50/50
drawing. The winners were Sandy
Noe and the Foundation for
Neurologic Diseases. A good time
was had by all!!!
The DAC Board thanks Sandy for
researching this event and pulling
together all that went into making

To honor Larry Nichols, who for
17 years hosted our annual cookout
at his home in Beverly, we named
our Annual Cookout the ‗Larry
Nichols Memorial DAC Cookout‘.
The Annual Cookout was held at
the Masonic Temple in Ipswich,
with an indoor air conditioned
banquet room and outdoor eating
area located on 10 acres with room
for ‗closest to the pin‘ golf , ladder
golf, horse shoes, balloon toss and
more.... Our members brought their
family and friends for a fun time.
Tony Foglia and Bob
Odachowski prepared a
great pre-lunch treat of
the best ever hot dogs.
The two chefs stayed at
the grill to prepare the steak tips and
chicken for our main meal. They did
a great job!! George Anderson was
seen at the grill, but we‘re not sure if
he was helping or tasting the steak
tips!
The corn shuckers were in superb
form. In no time at all Mary
O’Connor, Mary Donnelly, Gail
Roberts, Estelle Coan, Jane
Callahan, Sandy Strainge, Claire
Palmer had readied the bag of fresh
picked (that morning!) corn for
lunch.
After the hot dogs and before our
main meal, we ventured outside for
a round of games. The weather was
very hot and humid so we limited
our outdoor games to the water
balloon toss and a couple of rounds
of ladder golf.
The water balloon toss is always a
fun thing to watch. It‘s amazing how
much water a balloon can hold. The
winners in the balloon toss were
Tricia
Savage
and
George
Prodonas.
We send a special
Thank You to Estelle Coan for
filling the water balloons. It‘s a
good thing that it was so hot, it
helped Estelle dry out!
The winners in the Ladder Golf
were Inez Taatjes, first place,
George Prodonas, second place,
and Tricia Savage, third place.
There was spirited competition with
Irene Prodonas, Estelle Coan,
Carol Prata, Gail Roberts, Jane
Callahan, Jan McGann, Marge
Tripoli, George Prodonas, Tricia
Savage, Claire Palmer, Alice
Mardigian, Sandy Strainge, Inez
Taatjes, Paula Schulze, Pauline
Vass, Mike Walos tossing some
impressive shots.
Back inside we had lunch. We
feasted on steak tips, chicken, fresh
corn, potato salad, coleslaw, baked
beans, watermelon, and some of the
best desserts around. The lemonade
and ice tea were included with the
meal.
At the end of our meal we
proceeded to raffle off the many
great and interesting items that were
brought. Thank You to all who
brought something for the raffle
table.
Everyone purchased raffle tickets
and placed their tickets in the cups
of the items they wanted to win. We

must have had over 30 items! This
is always a fun time!!
George and Yvonne Anderson’s
granddaughter Olivia “Lulu” drew
the winning numbers for each of the
items. We had a lot of items to raffle
and it was great having Olivia’s
help. Thank you Olivia for doing a
great job!
There were 25 guesses on the
number of golf balls in the jar.
Carol Murphy beat them out with
her winning guess of 69.

Red Sox vs LA Angels
at Fenway Park
August 18, 2010
baseball that quite compares to
Fenway Park, the oldest park in
Major League Baseball.
We sold 108 of our 110 tickets with
the remaining 2 tickets given to a
charitable organization in South
Boston. Thank You everyone for
making this a successful event!!
Our seats were great, with an
unobstructed view of the action.
Paul Carney represented the DAC
at the ―Leader of the Pack‖
presentation.
Did you see his
picture on the jumbo-tron?
Even though the Red Sox were
behind coming into the 7th inning,
the sold out stadium stayed in their
seats. If you are a follower of the
Red Sox you know that ―come from
behind victories‖ are the norm. This
game was no exception.
LA Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen
handed over the tying run in the
bottom of the seventh on a wild
pitch, then plunked Daniel Nava
with the bases loaded for the goahead run in what became a 7-5 Red
Sox win.
Nava also made a game-saving
catch on Macier Izturis‘ sinking line
drive to end the eighth. Jonathan
Papelbon struck out the side in the
ninth for his 30th save.
The Red Sox season series with the
Angels has included nothing but
victories, an especially fulfilling
outcome for the Red Sox after they
were swept by Los Angeles in last
year's AL division series.

Established in 1935 Suffolk Downs
has
undergone
many
transformations over the years.
Suffolk Downs has staked its
future on becoming a destination
resort for casino gambling. As
we go to press, there continues to
be much debate between the
Governor and the state legislature
on creating destination resort
casinos and allowing slots in
Massachusetts.

The failure of the legislature and the
Governor to come to an agreement
on a final gambling bill has put
Suffolk Downs in a precarious
position.
As a result, Suffolk Downs has
canceled all 2010 events including
our October 13th event. We'll have
to wait to see what next year brings.

Caution to Job Seekers…
Pam Dixon, a privacy expert offers these tips to those using online job sites:
Use only your first initial and last name on your resume.
Do not include your phone number or address.
Use a new email account as contact information.
In addition, conduct extensive research on any companies that express an interest in hiring you. Contact the
company’s human resources department to confirm that the person posing as the interviewer is employed
there. Scammers have been known to use information from applicants’ online resume to contact them and
conduct bogus phone interviews. After the interview the scammer enthusiastically expresses an interest in
hiring the applicant and requests the applicants’ Social Security number and driver’s license number under
the guise of conducting a pre-employment background check. The end result is a stolen identity.

This is a first for us and wondered what may have triggered this request.

persons not qualified, such as kids that have finished school, ex-spouses, spouses with other employer sponsored

Hi Claire, Thought our friends and my fellow co-workers might be willing to send a prayer Ken's way. He had a
quadruple by-pass and aortic valve replacement on the 17th of August. Unfortunately, complications set in, which
meant more surgery and he has been back in CICU for 11 days and isn't responding very well to treatment. We would
appreciate prayers and positive thoughts for his recovery.

The Girl Friends
A group of 15 year old girlfriends discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed upon that they
should meet at the Dairy Queen next to the Ocean View restaurant because they only had $6.00 between them and
Jimmy Johnson, that cute boy in Social Studies, lives on that street and they might see him and they can ride their
bikes there.
10 years pass and the group of 25 year old girlfriends discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was
agreed upon that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the beer was cheap, they had free snacks, the
band was good, there was no cover and there were lots of cute guys.
Another 10 years pass, at 35 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally,
it was agreed upon that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the cosmos were good, it was right
near the gym and if they go late enough, there wouldn't be too many whiny little kids.
10 years later, at 45 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was
agreed upon that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the martinis were big, and the waiters there
had tight pants and nice buns.

Just got back from Kauai and wish I was on a plane right back!!! There was so much to see and do. We also had the
opportunity to just relax on some of the most spectacular beaches I have ever been to. We were celebrating our 37th
anniversary and had the pleasure of sharing it with our friends who were celebrating their 25th. I cannot think of a
better place to have gone to and we are planning our return in 2 years!!!!

Hello,
The annual Holy Parish Fair will be held on Oct. 23rd and 24th, at St. Martha Church on Rte. 1 in Kennebunk, would
love to see some alumni visit. There is something for everyone and the food is good too! This year our knitting and
crochet group is adding a line of fleece hats, scarves, gloves and blankets and crafts will one again feature some
American Girl Doll clothes and children's activity bags full with goodies as well as Halloween treats. It was
wonderful last year to see Cindy Ducharme and her friend. My Aunt Anna DePasquale is living at the JRC in
Swampscott on Paradise Rd and would love a visit from some of her co-workers. She fell a couple of weeks ago and
fractured her shoulder. If you are unable to visit perhaps you could send a card. She loves hearing from everyone.

A thankful note from Ami Lane….
Hi Everyone,
As some of you know, Ken was admitted to Memorial Hospital in Ormond on August l7th for open heart surgery. In
eight and half hours, his doctor did a valve replacement and quadruple bypass. In the first few days following the
surgery, Ken appeared to be doing well. However, on the 26th, he underwent abdominal surgery for a bowel
obstruction, was returned to CICU, and didn't wake up until the 3rd of September. He has been in CICU for a little
over a month, today at this writing, but we are hopeful that he'll be on his way to acute care rehab in a few days. Many
have sent good well wishes and prayers and for all, we are grateful. Ami Lane

back also puts one in mind of a traditional Craft initiation ceremony."

IDEARC Information:
On November 17, 2006, Verizon spun off its domestic print and Internet yellow pages directories publishing
operations as well as the Verizon Information Services (VIS) to Idearc. As part of the spin-off transaction, Verizon
retirees were moved from the well-funded pension plan of Verizon into an up-start company's pension plan,
which may not be in their best interest. Below is a timeline of actions the Association has taken on behalf of these
transferred retirees:
The Association filed an Administrative Claim and Request for Plan Documents on behalf of Idearc retirees on
February 4, 2009.
On May 27, 2009, the Association provided a supplement to the administrative class-wide claim.
On July 31, 2009, Verizon fully denied the Administrative Class-wide Claim.
On September 15, 2009, the Association filed an appeal to the July 31, 2009, denial of the Administrative Class-wide
Claim.
On January 6, 2010, an Amended Complaint for Proposed Class-Action Relief Under ERISA was filed against
Verizon Communications and Idearc Media in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas,

Idearc/Super Media - "Involuntarily Transferred Retirees"
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions from Members
Q. I received an 8 page letter from Verizon denying my claim. What should I do?
A. While you are encouraged to go ahead and respond to the denial letter, don't expect to receive anything but
another denial letter. All of the issues are adequately argued and addressed in the pending Amended Complaint which
you should take time to read. If you respond to the denial letter you should state that you adopt the arguments raised
in the Murphy proposed class action and you should demand to be returned to Verizon's pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that I received the form denial letter mean that we lost our case?
A. No, the denial letter is the same letter sent to all complaining retirees. The actual lawsuit filed in the Dallas Federal
Court is moving along as expected. No legal issue has been ruled upon by the Dallas Federal Judge, and it will be
months, perhaps a year, before there are rulings. Both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia hired several large law firms
and every step of this case may encounter some delays. The legal issues are unique and complicated.
Q. Do I need to get my own attorney?
A. Certainly, you have that option. But, it may prove to be an unnecessary expenditure. The Murphy case is being
pursued with the goal of addressing the problems for all former Verizon retirees who were involuntarily transferred into
Idearc/SuperMedia pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that Idearc changed its name to SuperMedia affect our case?
A. No, that fact has absolutely no effect on the lawsuit.

Q. What is the status of the case?
A. In mid-March 2010, defense counsel for both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia will respond to the pending Amended
Complaint and argue to have certain claims dismissed. Our attorneys will file a response in opposition. The court
filings will await a decision by the federal judge. Meanwhile, the next big fight will be over whether or not the case
should be class certified. All of this will take some time. All significant court filings will be posted at the retiree website.
Q. Where can I find updates on the case?
A. The Association of BellTel Retirees posts updates: www.belltelretirees.org Please read the Amending Complaint
filed on January 6, 2010, which thoroughly explains the proposed class action case and is posted at the website. Also,
when required, important email bulletins will be sent and USPS letters will be mailed to those not on the Internet. Email
is the best way to stay informed. Meanwhile, if you receive any letters from Verizon or Idearc regarding the suit, please

Plan Administrators:
I read the February 4, 2009 dated administrative claim letter sent to you on behalf of Claimants Phillip A. Murphy,
Jr., Susan A. Burke, Sandra R. Noe, Joanne Jacobsen, David L. Wibbelsman and Claire M. Palmer, all active
retired plan participants in Idearc’s now SuperMedia’s pension plans and former retired plan participants in Verizon’s
pension plans.
In that claim letter it was requested that you treat the matter as a class-wide administrative claim. I hereby join in
that administrative claim and adopt the contentions and request for relief stated therein. After the November 17,
2006 Verizon-Idearc spin-off, I was one of the approximately 3,000 active retirees involuntarily transferred from a
Verizon sponsored pension plan into an Idearc sponsored pension plan. This was done without my consent and all
to my detriment. A prudent plan fiduciary charged with a duty of loyalty and having responsibility to act in my
best interest would not have transferred me, involuntarily, from a Verizon pension plan into an Idearc pension plan.
I hereby demand that my status as a transferred retiree into the Idearc pension plan be rescinded and that Verizon
and Idearc agree that all Claimants, myself, and all other transferred retirees, be restored to former status as
participants in Verizon’s pension plans. It has never been and will never be in my best interest to be in the
retirement rolls of Idearc.

Northeast Gardeners
Autumn is beginning to take shape in the Northeast. Glorious fall colors can be enjoyed along
roadsides, in woodlands, gardens and landscapes. And so it goes, another fall is unfolding, sending
signals of shorter days and cooler nights to plants and people alike. It‘ll soon be time to bed the
landscape for the winter season. But before you get to hang up your gardening gloves and store the
spade, here are some chores you should get done in your early fall garden.
If your bird feeders have been on a summer vacation, it‘s time to clean and ready them for
the beginning of the long feeding season – from now until natural food becomes available to
our feathered friends again late next spring!
If you‘ve got houseplants that have been outside for a summer vacation, it‘s time to bring
them back indoors. Do a careful inspection of all plants before they come in, so you don‘t
bring any unwanted six-legged pests indoors for the winter! Not sure what the pest is? Visit
the staff at your local garden center or cooperative extension office for identification and
potential solutions. Make it easy on them, and remember to bring an intact sample of the
pest with you.
If you recently reseeded your lawn, remember to keep those newly-seeded areas free of
leaves. Fallen foliage can matt down and smother young grass. Use a bamboo rake to
carefully remove the leaves – or use a leaf blower if you‘ve got one.
Spring-flowering bulbs are readily available at your favorite garden supply store. Buy early
for the best selection!
If you want springtime color, get to your garden centers and mass merchandisers to pick up
some bulbs. You‘ve probably heard the slogan ―Fall is for Planting.‖ This saying is
especially true for spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, scillas
and more. Shop early for best selection to secure your favorites!

in their Alzheimer‘s research.

The Directory Alumni Council is a great way to stay in touch. Our organization is made up of former
Directory employees and has all the attributes of a close-knit family. We do care for each other and try to
be there for one another whenever there is a need. We do hope you will join us for the nominal $15
dues.
