TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to the final Newsletter for this term. I am sure that, like me, you are in need of a holiday and are looking forward to the next three weeks. The last month has been tremendously successful on the sports field with our senior football team winning the Bangkok Soccer League tournament by beating Bangkok Patana School in the final by 1-0. The tournament was close throughout and I was very proud of the whole squad for their hard work and tenacity in every match. The senior basketball team had an equally exciting and close-fought NCAA Charity Shield tournament, when they drew ahead of Assumption School in the final with just 5.4 seconds to go. The final score was 73-72. My congratulations go to all players and coaches for the outstanding skill and sportsmanship which they exhibited throughout. Our roller-ball stall continued to be one of the main attractions of the Ploenchit Fair this year and there was a continuous stream of children queuing for rides all through the day. My thanks go to all those who helped on the stall or who paid to go on the ride. Although the coming three weeks will be a time of rest and relaxation for many of us, I would like to remind all students in Year 11, 12 & 13 that they will have to assign a significant amount of their holiday time to revising for their mock examinations which will start on 5th January, the day after we resume for term two. A good set of results in the mock examination will be the best preparation for the main examinations in May, but this will only be possible with careful revision over the holidays. Mr Barry gave all Y11 students advice on how best to revise for these examinations, which I hope they will follow. For everyone else, I would just like to wish you a very enjoyable holiday and if you are travelling, safe journeys. I hope that the New Year brings you peace, health and happiness, and I look forward to seeing you all again on 4th January. Mr. Gordon Espley-Jones, School Principal 1 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL KPIS Inter-School Spelling Bee Well done to all the students who took part in the KPIS Spelling Bee, and special congratulations to Snack, from Year 6 who came 2nd in his group! Mrs. Jane Griffiths Vice Principal & Head of Primary 2 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM PRE-KG & KG 1 November has been full of ups and downs in Pre KG and KG1. We had to say goodbye to the twins Preme and Proud but have now welcomed 3 new students – Grace, Arya and Petch. We hope they have a fabulous time in Traill! Our main topic this month was ‘People who help us’. We took a trip to Samitivej Hospital to see what doctors and nurses do. Whilst we were there, KG students got to experience a ride in an ambulance. We also visited the nursery area where students saw a baby that was only one day old (we had to be very quiet around them)! We all celebrated Loy Kratong by making cool kratongs and floating them in our KG paddling pool! We also performed in the annual show in front of parents, performing actions to a fun Thai song. Ms. Jess is about to have a baby any day soon! As she needs some maternity time off, Ms Michelle is now the new Pre KG teacher. She has already got off to a great start with the kids! Christmas is creeping up quickly and students have been making lots of Christmas craft ready for Santa’s grand appearance on Christmas Day! Ms. Jessica Williams and Mr. Michael Mallon, Kindergarten Teachers Mrs. Michelle Parcia, Maternity Cover 3 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM KG 2 KG2 are always enjoying exploring the world around them and this month they have been learning about different celebrations. They have found out about the Hindu festival of Divali, joined in with the Loy Krathong celebrations and have been getting excited about Christmas, learning about the birth of Jesus and how Christmas is celebrated by Christians. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year, from KG2! Mrs. Rebecca Wongwiboonchai, Kindergarten 2 Teacher 4 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 1 It has been a busy yet exciting month in Year 1. We have started our final Topic of the term and learned lots about Antarctica, cold climates and Emperor Penguins. Also this month we celebrated Loy Krathong in style! We all looked absolutely fantastic in our traditonal Thai dress and during our modern Thai performance for the Loy Krathong show. As our final topic comes to an end Year 1 took a special trip to Snow Town in Ekkamai - it was so much fun! It was great to see our children of Year 1 enjoying the snow and sledging down icy hills. We have learned so much this term in Year 1, and we are ready for more in the new year. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! Ms. Evelyn Loy, Year 1 Teacher 5 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 2A It is almost the end of the first term. It only seems like yesterday that we began Year 2! Myself and Ms. Jane are incredibly pleased with the progress each child has made. We have been fortunate enough to have some good weather recently, so 2A became weather investigators. We explored the outside environment and worked very hard to identify specific clouds. Following our investigation we painted the clouds by mixing blue, white and grey paint. We explored different brush effects and all of them produced great results! Please take some time to have a look at them on the display outside our classroom. After studying the sky, we made some of our own hot air balloons! It was very messy using the papier mache, but we carefully painted them to make realistic hot air balloons. Finally, Year 2 are very busy making their final preparations for Christmas. Our production is coming together and we would like to thank the parents for providing their fantastic costumes. We would also like to thank parents for sending in the lovely crafts for our Christmas stockings. The result was fantastic even though the sewing was very tricky! Please come into the classroom to see out stockings hanging on the whiteboard. The last day is fast approaching and Year 2 are planning a Christmas party! This term we have been very lucky to celebrate some birthdays, and we are all looking forward to our final celebration together in 2015 on Friday December 11th. Ms. Victoria Hordle, Year 2A Teacher 6 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 CHRISTMAS CHEER IN 2B! Year 2B kicked off the Christmas season by making Christmas stockings and showing their sewing skills. We have been working hard while practicing for the Christmas play and preparing the different costumes. During Literacy the children have been learning how to construct a story and there has been some very imaginative writing. The children have worked hard in Maths learning about multiplication and using numberlines. We finished off our ‘Flying High’ topic by making hot air balloons and painting various types of clouds. We investigated the weather and learned all about clouds. They enjoyed pretending to be on T.V. and giving a weather forecast. The children had great fun learning about Amy Johnson by taking a virtual plane journey in the classroom! We re-traced the route and wrote postcards as Amy Johnson after her trip. Mr. Joseph O’Neill, Year 2B Teacher 7 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 A TRIP TO THE POST OFFICE Year 3 visited the local post office (and even a quick stop for ice-cream!) to buy stamps, address their envelopes and post their letters. They had been learning about traditional letter writing, and all managed to write wonderful letters. Mr. Chris Douglas, Year 3 Teacher 8 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 WOOD WORK CLUB, ECA Students have been working hard designing and planning their spring loaded marble runs. With their special designs, the marbles role in both directions! Mr. Chris Douglas, Year 3 Teacher 9 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 YEAR 4A: LOY KRATHONG Loy Krathong celebrations are an important part of Thai and South-East Asian culture. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the Western calendar this usually falls in November. Every year our school celebrates this festivity by engaging our students in a variety of activities. This year, our 4A students celebrated this important festivity by making wonderful krathongs (which could be translated as “baskets”) during that day. We used banana stems, flowers, pins and other decorations to produce our beautiful pieces. A special thanks to our Thai department, who supervised the whole process. At the end of our Loy Krathong show, prizes for best dress and krathong were awarded. Kaohom and Kane were respectively chosen for best costume and best krathong for Year 4A. Mr. Lawrence Tomasi, Year 4A Teacher 10 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 4B 4B did a class assembly on our topic ‘Electricity’ on 20th November this half term. We started off by talking about what it would be like to live without electrical devices. Then we talked about how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. After that 4B showed everyone what we had learned about electrical circuits, conductors and insulators. Then to finish our assembly we gave the audience a quiz, to test how well they had been listening, Full marks – well done everyone!! Mr. David Gaggini, Year 4B Teacher 11 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 5A Year 5 are now coming to the end of their Ancient Greece Studies. Throughout this topic children were encouraged to take ownership of their own learning for homework tasks. We have been really pleased with the effort that a number of children put in and the unique ideas that have come from this. Students retold stories in storyboards, researched and presented the Greek alphabet, researched and made menus for Greek restaurants, created information leaflets on Ancient Greek technologies and they even created masks and stampers to showcase their learning. Here are some notable showcases of learning. We will continue selfdirected learning next term with our new topic. I am looking forward to seeing evidence of student centred learning and unique showcases of this learning. Mr. James McMeekin, Year 5A Teacher 12 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 5B It has been a very busy and productive month in Year 5B: landscapes, live performances and Loy Kratong, meant all hands on deck! Students have been creating 3D models of landscapes and many students found this kinesthetic learning aided their memorization of landforms. The class also worked hard during Thai lessons to perfect their performances for the annual Loy Kratong celebrations. Mr. Angus Moore, Year 5B Teacher 13 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NEWS FROM YEAR 6A In November, students were chosen to represent Traill at the annual Spelling Bee competition, held at KPIS. Our excellent selected spellers were: Arata, Cesca and Kyosei (Year 3) Fiji and Kim (Year 4) Angie (Year 5) Snack and Rei (Year 6) Mixer (Year 7) Under immense pressure, a number of our students got to the final round, with our most successful entrant being Snack from class 6A, who came second in the G5-G6 category. Congratulations to every pupil that made the trip and represented Traill fantastically. By the way, Snack’s winning word was ‘counterfeit’. Do you think you would have spelt that correctly? Mr Joseph Gale, Year 6A Teacher 14 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 Technology in the ‘Real’ World NEWS FROM YEAR 6B This is such a great half term for Year 6, as they went to Dreamworld, to investigate rotational rides, before they build miniature versions, which they controlled through the computer! The children had an amazing day out, being spun, soaked and turned upside down. Now they are ready to begin their building! Bee Bots and Pro Bot Madness! In Computer Studies the students of Year 6 have been learning about different computer languages; and the best way to do this, is to use the floor robots. Meet the Bee Bot This floor robot introduces the children to basic language (forward, backward, turn left, turn right); from this they look at cause and effect based on their programming. In groups the children created maps and a program to enable the floor robot to navigate the map successfully. The other groups tested their programs. The next step was to use the more advanced floor robots – the Pro Bots – whose language is more complex; including angles by degrees and the ability to created procedure to draw more complex shapes. Happy Loy Krathong! This is one of the most beautiful celebrations here in Thailand, and at Traill we really know how to celebrate such an occasion. We spent the morning making our Krathongs, aren’t they beautiful! We ended the day with the Loy Krathong Show celebrating music, tradition and of course beauty! The Thai teachers and the students made it our best show ever! And our final celebration of the term – Christmas! The children made their own Christmas stockings which they placed under their class tree. Later they had their class Christmas parties and opened their presents. Have a wonderful Christmas and wish everyone successes in 2016! Ms. Stacy Corless, KS2 Leader & Year 6B teacher 15 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 Crazy Science – Magical Colours All Around Us Fizzy Paints This month we have experimented with colours, creating colourful milk, fountains, flowers and paints! We all know painting is fun. What happens when you create paints using baking soda, and then spray vinegar over it? You guessed it – it fizzes! That’s exactly what we did! Colourful Milk The children were learning all about emulsions. This is where a liquid cannot mix. In this case adding washing up liquid to full fat milk, separates the milk, making the fat molecules float around. They take the food colouring with them, creating a beautiful swirling pattern! Foamy Fountains We activated yeast (a microorganism) and added some washing up liquid. Finally we added hydrogen peroxide and watched to see what would happen…. Foam is created as the yeast extracts the oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide! This has been such a fun and exciting term in Crazy Science. If you’re interested to join in the wonders of science, don’t forget to sign up for this ECA next term! Colourful Flowers With Loy Krathong so close, we decided to turn white flowers other colours! Using our knowledge of capillary action, we know that plants can suck up water through their roots. So if we turned the water a different colour, then the plant would transport that coloured water around itself, turning its petals a different colour. Ms. Stacy Corless, KS2 Leader & Year 6B Teacher 16 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 FROM THE PRIMARY THAI DEPARTMENT The Primary students are promoting Loy Krathong Festival by making cool posters. In celebration of the 2015 Father’s day, the Primary students are making cards and neckties for their father. Ms. Chaowadee Koson (Kru Guide), Primary Thai Language & Culture Teacher 17 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 MORE FROM THE PRIMARY THAI DEPARTMENT The Year 6 non-Thai students are learning about Thai food this term. Recipes they are learning how to make include different kinds of fried rice (aka Khao Pad), for example, seafood fried rice, chicken fried rice, and just plain egg fried rice. After tasting the dishes, "Yummy" was the universal response. Moreover, they also practiced making krathong by using papers before moving on to use banana leaves to make real krathong. The activity was very enjoyable. Ms. Boontarika Aranyakanon, Primary Thai Language & Culture Teacher 18 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 TRAILL TRIVIA The inaugural Junior division of Traill Trivia saw a good competition between years eight and nine. Their knowledge was tested in various fields but a team comprising of Kel, Sandy and Janny from 8A ended up taking home the glory. Well done girls! Due to the holidays, the next competition was held on Monday, November 30th in the Assembly Hall at 12:25. The teams this time were interhouse and open to all year levels. Mr. Graeme Webster, Head of Sixth Form 20 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 CREATIVE ARTS DEPARTMENT EVENT The Creative Arts Department collaborated in November to showcase the plethora of talent at Traill. We had an art exhibition, music performance, and the play “Dracula’s Boarding House.” The event took place over three days, from November 2 – 4. Key Stage Two students enjoyed the performance on November 2, along with a solo piano performance from Pluly in year 11A. The secondary students saw the performance on November 3 with a guitar performance from Joji in year 11C. Finally, we performed for parents and friends on November 4, with a piano performance from Jane in year 11A. Kru Note prepared the students for their beautiful musical pieces. Miss Claire and Miss Sarah prepared the collaborative art exhibition of the IGCSE and Key Stage Three students of Art and Design. Miss Sarah: “This past September the IGCSE Art and Design students have been inspired by using their own chosen themes to create observation Chinese ink paintings. The students also viewed the Year 11 acrylic paintings, created last year in the students' Year 10 Art and Design class. They used the Artist, Peter Doig, as a guide for learning to use acrylic paint in multiple translucent layers and to consider degrees of chance in the application of paint, while also applying an element of mystery in their choice of subject. Last year, the Year 9 Art and Design students, took inspiration from the sculptor, Joan Danziger, to create insects made from recycled materials.” Miss Claire: “In Key Stage Three we study the Visual Elements, these are the vital ingredients that make a work of Art. We look at artists that specifically use line, tone, colour and pattern in their work, with that background knowledge we then approach basic art and design tasks. In year 7 we have looked at traditional and modern portraiture, using line and tone we have produced some incredible self-portraits. Students were then encouraged to create a coloured pattern version expressing their own personalities. In year 8 we have built upon the skills learned in year 7 and expanded into abstracted but controlled paintings skills, looking at animal illustrators and Zettiology. We've created new and exciting environments for our invented animals and then produced clay tiles in a complementary colour to contrast the two materials. In year 9 we studied the work of 3D artist Joan Danziger and created our own fabulous 3D insects made out recycled and reclaimed materials. For the first few weeks at Traill, we have all worked on creating a ‘Mandela’ made very simply from our own names. The positioning and repeating of the names create amazing patterns and tiles resulting in the impressive display.” The Drama Club performed the comedy “Dracula’s Boarding House.” Play Synopsis: After inheriting Uncle George’s country mansion, Louise excitedly packs her bags and decides to explore the uncle’s sprawling country estate with her friend, Casey. Expecting to find a beautiful home, Louise and Casey discover a dilapidated old home with curtains made out of cobwebs and a spooky coffin in the middle of the room. Tired and hungry, the girls decide to search for food and a place to sleep and soon discover they’re being watched by Dracula’s hungry husbands, Lucas aged 472, Alan, 95 years younger, and Shy. This leads to a ravenous romp as Louise and Casey try to avoid becoming dinner for this group of restless, not to mention, fanged vampires. 21 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 Cast List: Count Dracula: Hoya (8B) Renfields (Dracula’s Assistants): Chloe and Annie (8B) Louise Lawson: Janny (8A) Casey Stigler: Kaylah (8B) Lucas (Dracula’s Husband): Tut (7A) Alan (Dracula’s Second Husband): Boat (7A) Shy (Another Husband): Kong (7A) Girl (Dracula’s Victim): Imm (7A) Stage Manager: Shadi (7A) Lighting Designer: Jean C. Joji’s Guitar Performance. Year 7 student portraits in the Art Exhibition. Jane’s Piano Performance. 23 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 When I was at the temple camp… We had a trip to Wat Punyawanaram (a beautiful temple) from the 26th of November to the 28th of November. Staying there wasn’t easy. It takes patience and you have to resist the temptation to break the rules. But despite that, I think this trip was a wonderful experience. It opened up my eyes and made me see things I haven’t seen before. It got me thinking of things I would have never thought about. And most importantly, it made me realize how lucky I am. Whenever I’m at the temple, my head was naturally light and clear. This trip really made me zen. Sure, it was a bit challenging waking up at 4am to meditate and pray, washing and cleaning up after ourselves, sitting still, no air conditioning, no electronic devices (I could go on and on), but it was totally worth it. I know it will definitely benefit me in the future. I can’t say I wasn’t homesick though, because I was. But we’ve been taught to carry on no matter how hard it gets. However, that’s not the only thing they taught us. They also taught us how we should realize how lucky we are, how we should be grateful and never take anything for granted (which is easier said than done). I’m really thankful to all the monks who took their time to teach us how to be better human beings and thankful for the teachers who taught us so much. Also, I’m really thankful for my friends and family for helping me along the way. I realize now that there’s not a better life I’d ask for. Written by Chloe (Year 8B) 24 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 ESL HALL OF FAME We have created an ESL Hall of Fame in recognition of the outstanding results achieved by former ESL students in their recent IGCSE’s, AS, and A levels. The students who have won this accolade have worked with incredible determination to achieve their goals. Not only are they the very best from ESL, they are amongst the most accomplished students in the entire school! Our ESL staff would also like to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of all of our students currently working through the ESL program and those who have now graduated to mainstream. The students in the Hall of Fame are a guiding light for their peers, serving as an example of what can be achieved with exceptional dedication. If you see these faces around school, please congratulate them! Mr. Patrick Hughes, ESL Head of Faculty 25 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 THE SHARK GUARDIAN On Friday 20th November students and staff heard a presentation from Brendon Lee, founder of The Shark Guardian. This UK- based charity aims to educate people around the world about sharks and to dispel some of the myths that surround these amazing creatures. Using a range of video clips and personal anecdotes, Brendon explained that many shark species are in danger of extinction as they are being mercilessly hunted – especially for their fins. These are used in shark-fin soup, a Chinese delicacy often served at weddings and parties. Brendon explained that the sharks are caught, their fins cut off while they are alive, and then the wounded creatures simply tossed back into the sea to die slowly and painfully. He urged everyone to refuse to eat this dish, which, he said, despite being half-Chinese himself, was completely tasteless! He also had statistics to show we are in far more danger from our electric toasters – which kill more than 600 people a year – than from sharks, which only kill a few people in the same time. At the end of the presentation Kaylah and Anne from 8B presented Brendon with a Traill paperweight for himself, as memento of his visit, and 3000 baht to be used to continue his battle to save sharks. Mr. Philip Peters, Head of Student Welfare: Secondary 26 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 Congratulations to Gene in Year 8A who came in second place at the Shrewsbury Invitational Golf 2015. The event took place on Sunday 15th of November. 27 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 BSL Elite League Champions 2015 Congratulations to our U18 Boys Football Team: BSL Elite League Champions 2015 Traill Boys completed an excellent victory in the BSL 11 a side elite league this year. Despite our team being young with an average age of 15, we beat some of the top U18 teams in Thailand and eventually beat the BPS team in the final 1-0, with a last minute goal. It was a remarkable victory as we only made it to the finals with a last minute change in league position after checking our goal difference. Traill will join the 2016 league in January and hope to continue our success and development. 28 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 NCAA Charity Shield Basketball Tournament Champions, 2015 Congratulations to our U18 Boys Basketball Team: NCAA Charity Shield Basketball Tournament Champions, 2015 Traill boys won the inaugural Traill sponsored Charity Shield Basketball tournament that was held at Ramkhamhaeng University. The tournament involved Traill and nine other of the top teams in Thailand. There were some great close games along the way, however none of these could match the final that Traill won 73-72 with a last minute basket in the final seconds of the game versus Assumption Thonburi, who are the top basketball school in Thailand. 29 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT On Wednesday 18th November 2015, a group of students from the music department played in the “TIS Music Assembly 2015”, in the main hall. In this event, there were a lot of the extremely exciting variety shows from the music department such as “TIS Pop Band and Acoustic Band” (including The Cross Heart and The Ascension). “Piano Solo” performed by Pluly & Jane (Y11). “Guitar Solo” performed by Joji (Y11). “Bass Solo” performed by IL (Y11). “Singing” performed by Mook & Tonkla (Y10), Jida & Prai (Y10), Sally & Shin Shin (Y10) and Connor & Joji (Y11). All performers in year 10 have done extremely well in performing many musical pieces. This event is also the part of their coursework Component 2 (Performing) for both individual and ensemble. Finally, I would like to thank all the performers, staff and participants for making the best ever Music Assembly at Traill International School. Congratulations! Mr. Pongsithorn Sareeratana (Kru Note), Music Teacher 30 December 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL December 2015 Traill International School would like to extend our great appreciation to PATT, Krispy Kreme, and Vejthani Hospital for their provision of food, drinks, and medical assistance at the Traill’s 2015 Annual Sports Day on Friday 4 th of December. 31 December 2015
