Musical Leadership
For a small school, MAS sure does offer a lot of music.
At last count we had two choirs, a concert band, a
junior concert band, a saxophone ensemble, a clarinet
ensemble and a flute ensemble, as well as offering tuition
on seven different instruments.

But each of those groups needs a leader, an organiser,
someone with drive, determination, musical skill and
qualities that enthuse and encourage children to perform.
Obviously we have quite a few!
Belinda Wundersitz and accompanist Diane Wheare
started 2012 early with the Festival Choir preparations.
The choir received glowing accolades from the choir
leaders and the students enthusiasm and polished
performances are a testament to Belinda’s leadership
and dedication.
The Junior Choir has had a big year too, performing at
both school and community functions. Primary music
teacher Vanessa Secomb has led the choir for many
years, and her enthusiastic and encouraging approach
has seen many of her young members take up places
in the senior group. Congratulations too Vanessa, on
the district’s nomination for an Excellence In Teaching
Award; richly deserved!
Concert Band conductor Debbie Schwartz used 2012
to expand our students’s opportunities for music making.
The newly formed Saxophone Ensemble was the chosen
performance vehicle for several of our Year 12 students
and the group proved a big hit with the judges at the
Balaklava Eisteddfod. The Junior Concert Band earned
its wings in a joint concert with Clare High School and
should help younger students with the transition from
small group instrumental lessons to being a part of the
Concert Band. Debbie’s pursuit of excellence and her
belief in students’ abilities is matched only by her tireless
work promoting music both at school and in the wider
community, a fact recognised in her nomination for an
Excellence in Teaching Award.
MAS is also enviable in the skilled support the Music
Program can call upon. Thank you to Star Derrington
who conducted the Junior Choir during Vanessa’s
absence, to Sarah Townsend for her continuing support
of the Concert Band, to Kellie Whittaker for taking on
drum and guitar lessons and to community
members Di Morgan, Malcolm Kinch and
Linda Kinch for their involvement and
support of the Concert Band.

Flute Ensemble. Made up of three or more
flutes, usually accompanied by a piano. A flute
choir is a group of flutes including higher or
lower pitched instruments such as piccolos or
bass flutes.
Saxophone Ensemble. A musical group
featuring different saxophones and a rhythm
section. Our Sax Ensemble has a baritone sax
and several tenor and alto saxophones.
Clarinet Ensemble. Like the flute ensemble,
a clarinet ensemble or choir usually features
a range of different clarinets. Although our
students all play standard Bb clarinets, clarinet
choirs may also include alto or bass clarinets.
Concert Band. Concert bands can also
be called wind bands, symphonic bands,
symphonic winds, wind orchestras, wind
symphonies, wind ensembles, or symphonic
wind ensembles. (Thank you Wikipedia!). The
clue to the name is the ‘wind’ part; the concert
band is made up mainly of wind instruments,
including flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones
and saxophones. We also have a rhythm section with drumkit, timpani drums, percussion (all the fiddly bits!)
and keyboard. Concert bands are usually
conducted and although they play similar music
to a marching band - they don’t march!
Music Pathways
We have five students who have taken music as a
Year 12 subject this year. This is an important option
students in the Concert Band should consider as they
can continue to learn an instrument, play in the band and
receive SAC points for doing something they enjoy!
Please contact Mr Tuck or Mrs Schwartz for more
information on Year 11 and 12 music pathways.

2012: The Year That Was
Was it really only twelve months ago we had our first
concert in the Performing Arts Centre? Twelve months
since the Choir performed at the Festival Centre?
Twelve months after the Concert Band toured the
Yorke Peninsula?
Well, THAT year passed in a flash - and wouldn’t you
know, we’ve crammed it all in again!
No sooner had the dust settled on the 2011 Concert
then we were preforming our first musical - ‘Bingle
Jells’ in the PAC. Some great acting and singing from
principals Jackson and Georgia and a terrific snowflake
dance courtesy the Receptions and Letitia Linke.
The band toured the YP performing at Ardrossan
Yorketown and the Maitland Lutheran School. Thank
you to Nixons buses for their help in arranging this.
April, 2012 | We all perform at the official
opening of the Performing Arts Centre.
We were no sooner back to school when Ron, Jackson
and Amelia went to a two-day secondary schools
concert band workshop and performed at Elder Hall.
Of course, back to school means the Maitland Show is
on the way. Both choirs and the band performed with a
number of students making their performing debuts.
April saw the official opening of the PAC. Everyone
performed at the opening and Sonya from Allans music
was so impressed she donated some guitars.
We had a great turn out for the ANZAC Dawn Service
again and welcomed Tim Schwartz on trumpet.
July, 2012 | The Sax Ensemble win a trophy
at the Balaklava Eisteddfod.
In May the Music Is Fun Band visited and our students
(after some tutoring from Vanessa) sang, danced and
performed to the huge crowd in the Recreation Centre.
Students also went to the IMS music camp at Port
Hughes and performed at the Moonta Town Hall.
In July the bands competed at the Balaklava
Eisteddfod. Congratulations to Deb Schwartz and the
Sax Ensemble for their first win.
In August the staff were busy performing in Chicago.
Debbie and Belinda had starring roles on stage and
Tim, Vanessa and Sarah were in the band. It was great
to be joined by ex-student Ryan Hallett and Concert
Band members Di, Malcolm and Linda.
August rounded out with the annual Danceathon. This
was huge this year as we were joined by not only the
Kindy and Point Pearce but by out visiting Japanese
students.
September, 2012 | The Festival Choir
perform at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide.
September saw the culmination of nine months of hard
work with the Festival Choir performing in Adelaide.
Congratulations to Belinda and to soloist Brianna
Schwartz for a brilliant night.
Early November saw Jordyn at a Primary Schools
Music Workshop with over 200 IMS students and of
course - we’re now up to the Concert!

Farewell Vanessa
l
It is with much sadness that we farewell Vanessa, as
she leaves Maitland to take up a new appointment at
Glen Osmond Primary School in Adelaide.
Vanessa came to MAS as part of the Instrumental
Music Service in 2000, a year sadly marked by the
sudden death of music teacher Marianne Todonai.
She moved into the classroom in 2001, teaching
instrumental music part time.
Vanessa’s outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic
approach to teaching soon came to the fore, and
she quickly immersed herself in the school’s music
programme, taking on R-5 music responsibilities and
joining the (then) CYP Combined Schools Concert
Band.
August, 2012 | On stage role in
‘Half a Sixpence’ production.
June, 2002 | ‘Bob the Builders’,
Music Is Fun Band performance.
Vanessa introduced several innovative - and now well
established - programs to the school.
With contacts in high places, she persuaded the
legendary ‘Music Is Fun Band’ to visit Maitland and this
originally one-off performance has turned into a yearly
highlight for not only us but for the Kindy, Point Pearce
and Lutheran Schools as well.
She formed the Junior School Choir, encouraging
younger students to participate in singing performances
and providing well trained and enthusiastic singers for
the soon to come Festival Choir.
November, 2003 | On the set of
‘Rhymes With Rats’ filming.
August, 2004 | MMAC
production band.
She was also the force behind our Primary dancea-thon and anyone who can convince 150 primary
students (and their teachers) to do the Chicken Dance
on an annual basis deserves a medal at the very least!
Over the years Vanessa has been involved with
countless school productions in both vocal and dramatic
roles, performed in the band with the Maitland Music &
Arts Club, taken groups of students to numerous fetes
and has been an especially staunch supporter of the
Weetulta Strawberry Fete.
November 2011 | Playing with
the Concert Band at the RAH.
June, 2010 | Checking PAC
plans and construction.
I’ve relied on Vanessa’s support in school musicals
more than I can ever say; after all, it’s important that
at least one person is singing the correct tune! I’ve
certainly appreciated her willingness to involve herself
at both the school and community level and as a multiinstrumentalist ‘jack-of-all trades’ she’ll be much missed
in our Concert Band.
We wish Vanessa all the very best for the
future and hope that her new school
appreciates what a wonderful teacher,
mentor, colleague and friend they have
gained.
December, 2010 | On stage with
‘Cabbage Patch Dragon’.
February 2012 | Primary School
Assembly.
