The History of Thief River Falls By Gretchen Beito Thief River Falls first developed as a lumber milling town. It also became a major agricultural service area because of the rich soil left by ancient, glacial Lake Agassiz. The unusual name, “Thief River,” was given to the river by the Ojibwe and Dakota people. “Falls” was added to the name of the new city in 1896 because a series of rapids in the river had been converted to a waterfall by the construction of the dam. Until 1904, an Ojibwe village of 40 families was located where the Thief and Red Lake Rivers meet. Northwestern Minnesota at its best! Thief River Falls is the place to be! Not only is it the birthplace of the Arctic Cat snowmobile and one of the top birding and wildlife areas in the country, it’s a great place for families, too! You just can’t beat our parks, attractions, schools and friendly people—so come visit us! The Great Northern and the Soo Line Railroads brought prosperity when Thief River Falls became a center for shipping wheat. Today, the city continues its entrepreneurial spirit, preserving and respecting the past, yet growing and moving toward the future, especially in the manufacturing and distribution industries, both nationally and internationally. Spend a day, spend a week, spend a lifetime! Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village The Pennington County Historical Society, which was organized in the 1930s, is responsible for maintaining the Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village. Officially opened in 1976, the museum and village provide a living history of Thief River Falls. From its early years as a rural community, to later years when Thief River Falls became an important regional economic hub, the city has grown and prospered. Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village, named after a local Norwegian immigrant, consists of 19 buildings with over 25,000 individual items on display. Buildings include seven late-1800s log houses; a Swedish Lutheran church, built in 1916; two railroad building depots and two cabooses; a one-room schoolhouse dating back to 1908; five original stores (including a blacksmith shop, general store, and beauty and barber shops); a restored two-story home; a large farm and auto machinery building; and a museum. The museum and buildings are open to the public Memorial Day through Labor Day with guided tours available. With 45 separate sites and side trips along the way, bird watchers and lovers of wildlife will find this a virtual paradise! (Note: the trail is now connected to Manitoba’s birding trail to form an international birding trail!) Situated at the juncture of 3 major ecosystems—tall-grass prairie, boreal forests and aspen parkland—this Northwestern Minnesota trail provides a unique collection of habitats which provide homes for a tremendous variety of birds. Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, the largest wildlife refuge in the state of Minnesota, is an incredible birding treasure, located just a short drive from Thief River Falls. The Refuge is a haven for as many as 280 species of birds. Look for a complete birding checklist and Pine to Prairie booklet at the Thief River Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau. Fishing in the Thief River Falls Area The Red Lake River, in the Thief River Falls area, offers excellent fishing. Whether you’re in waders, a float tube, canoe or just fishing from the bank, the opportunity for walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth bass, crappies and a host of other species is great! Accessing the river is not a problem with two boat landings within the city limits. You can also get to the river through both city parks and below the dam. Waterfowl and small game hunters coming to the Thief River Falls area should remember to pack a fishing rod. There is a fall run of walleyes in the Red Lake River. Walleyes will move upriver and hold below the dam in October—a jig and minnow are all it takes. With parking lots on both sides of the river and a walkway on the east side, access is easy. Trails to the north connect to the community of Roseau and from there to the Canadian border and east to the Warroad and Baudette trail systems. To the south, riders take trails that connect with Bemidji and Detroit Lakes. Each trail is unique in offering a variety of terrain including river riding and picturesque wilderness trails. Watch Us Grow... Arctic Cat, currently a $700M company, can trace its roots to former Polar Manufacturing, which was started in 1960 in Thief River Falls. Shortly after, the name was changed to Arctic Enterprises which began producing a wide-range of snowmobiles. By 1978, the rapidly growing company had purchased several boat manufacturers, as well, but following several snowless winters, the company closed their facilities in 1982. The snowmobile manufacturer was reborn in 1984 as Arctco, then renamed Arctic Cat in 1996. Today, the company is a leading manufacturer of snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and side-by-sides in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The first school started in Thief River Falls in 1883, with ten children from two families enrolled. The area grew so quickly that in just ten years, the Central High School building was erected, and by 1903, 1100 pupils were attending city schools. Throughout the last hundred years, enrollment has nearly doubled, and now Thief River Falls is home to a firstclass school district, operating a high school, middle school and elementary school, with every student having access to a computer or ipad. Of note: benefactor Ralph Engelstad, who was raised in Thief River Falls, also built a state-of-the-art $11.5 million hockey arena for the high school team in 2001. Jefferson Highway The Jefferson Highway was the first transcontinental road to traverse the North American continent from north to south, and it was possibly the first dedicated international highway in the world! Named for President Thomas Jefferson, who acquired the highway land when he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, the old Highway passed through Thief River Falls just west of the current Digi-Key site on Barzen Avenue. Today look for the designation signs! Stretching from Winnipeg, Canada to New Orleans, the Highway only existed as a named highway for a short period of time until the new standardized numbering system was instigated in the 1920s. It was also occasionally referred to as the Palm to Pine Highway by motorcades traveling to and from the sunny South to the great Northwoods. The above information was taken from a Thief River Falls Eagle Scout project created by Benjamin Beito.
