Watch Us Grow...
The
History of
Thief River
Falls
By Gretchen Beito
Thief River Falls first developed
as a lumber milling town. It also
became a major agricultural
service area because of the rich
soil left by ancient, glacial Lake
Agassiz.
The unusual name, “Thief River,” was given to the river by
the Ojibwe and Dakota people. “Falls” was added to the
name of the new city in 1896
because a series of rapids in the
river had been converted to a
waterfall by the construction of
the dam. Until 1904, an Ojibwe
village of 40 families was located where the Thief and Red
Lake Rivers meet.
Northwestern Minnesota at its best!
Thief River Falls is the place to be! Not only is it the birthplace of the Arctic Cat
snowmobile and one of the top birding and wildlife areas in the country, it’s a
great place for families, too! You just can’t beat our parks, attractions, schools and
friendly people—so come visit us!
The Great Northern and the
Soo Line Railroads brought
prosperity when Thief River
Falls became a center for shipping wheat. Today, the city continues its entrepreneurial spirit,
preserving and respecting the
past, yet growing and moving
toward the future, especially in
the manufacturing and distribution industries, both nationally and internationally.
Spend a day, spend a week, spend a lifetime!

Digi-Key has seen exponential growth in the past decade.
From its early years in the 1970s, when the company grossed
under a million dollars with just a handful of employees,
annual sales has soared past $1.5 billion per year, and the
Digi-Key
number of employees now exceeds 2600. The company has
not forgotten its humble roots, however. Digi-Key makes
every effort to purchase locally, when possible, as well as
supporting local science and technology groups and holding
fundraisers for local charities.

Peder Engelstad
Pioneer Village
The Pennington County Historical
Society, which was organized in the
1930s, is responsible for maintaining
the Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village.
Officially opened in 1976, the
museum and village provide a living
history of Thief River Falls. From its
early years as a rural community,
to later years when Thief River
Falls became an important regional
economic hub, the city has grown
and prospered.
Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village,
named after a local Norwegian
immigrant, consists of 19 buildings
with over 25,000 individual items on display. Buildings include seven late-1800s
log houses; a Swedish Lutheran church, built in 1916; two railroad building depots
and two cabooses; a one-room schoolhouse dating back to 1908; five original
stores (including a blacksmith shop, general store, and beauty and barber shops); a
restored two-story home; a large farm and auto machinery building; and a museum.
The museum and buildings are open to the public Memorial Day through Labor Day
with guided tours available. Check our Events Calendar (beginning on page 10) for a
schedule of special activities at the Village.

405 3rd St. E., Thief River Falls • 218-681-2500
The Historic Soo Line Railroad Depot, located on U.S.
Highway 59 downtown, is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. From completion of construction in 1914
until 1967, when passenger train service was terminated,
the Depot was a hub of community activity almost 24 hours
a day. At the height of its use, the Depot saw 13 passenger
trains arrive and depart each day. Following a successful
“Save the Depot” fundraising campaign in 1994-95, the
City decided to renovate and remodel the building for use
as City Hall. The completed project retained most of the
building’s significant interior features, including the terrazzo
floor and wood trim and doors in the main passenger terminal area. Steam Locomotive No. 1024, a Soo Class L-4,
2-8-2 MIKADO, is on permanent display outside the Depot.

4-Day Itinerary
in Thief River Falls
There’s much to do in Thief River Falls, so we’ve made it easy for
you. Below is a great four-day itinerary for you to use as is or add to
and change. The Thief River Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau is
here to help, so give us a call when visiting the area at 218-686-9785.
Day 1: Exploring Our Past
and Envisioning Our Future!
Day 2: Our Great Outdoors–
it’s For the Birds!
8:00-9:30
Begin with a hearty breakfast at one of our
great restaurants.
8:00-9:00
Breakfast at the hotel, pick up a bag lunch
and board your vehicle or bus.
9:30-11:30
Browse Thief River Falls’ delightful downtown
and grab a latte at a local coffee shop.
9:00-2:00
Travel 22 miles north to the largest wildlife
refuge in Minnesota, Agassiz National
Wildlife Refuge, where you will find over 280
species of birds! Take the “Lost Bay Habitat
Drive”, a four-mile, self guided tour route, open
from May-October. Three hiking trails are also
located within the refuge. Group tours should
be arranged by contacting the refuge office at
218-449-4115.
11:30-1:00
Take time for a leisurely lunch or grab a snack
and meander along the Red Lake River.
3:00-4:00
Head across Hwy. 32 to Digi-Key
Corporation, 701 Brooks Ave. for a free tour!
Call ahead to reserve, 218-681-6674. DigiKey is the 5th largest electronic component
distributor in North America, 9th largest in
the world. Digi-Key ships to 140 countries
and utilizes state-of-the-art technologies to
process its 2-million annual orders.
4:00
Relax at your hotel, then have dinner out on
the town and check out Thief River Falls’ great
night life!
2:00-4:00
Continue your nature-viewing at Thief Lake
Wildlife Management Area, where you’ll
find wildlife such as waterfowl and other
marsh birds, deer, moose, bear, grouse,
rabbits, songbirds, sandhill cranes and
raptors. Take a walk around the lake or relax
on a blanket before heading back into the
city.
4:00-6:00
Stop at Falls Stay ‘N Play for a round of
18-hole miniature golf! You’ll find this great
mini golf course, arcade, playground and
campground at the junction of Hwy. 59 N.
and Hwy. 1 W. Call 218-681-3546 for more
information!
6:00

enjoying dinner at one of the city’s terrific
dining options and take in some darts or pool
at one of our lounges.
8:00 – 9:30
Have a muffin and juice at a local eatery.
9:30 – 11:30
Stroll our fascinating Riverwalk and stop
at the nine parks along the route. Fifteen
pictographs (like the Ojibwe Village, Ice
Harvesting and the Meehan Sawmill), are
found along several miles of trail, showing
what the view along the river was like many
years ago. The Riverwalk travels through
town along the Red Lake and Thief Rivers,
passing by three forest trails and dam
and historical sites such as the Soo Line
Railroad Depot and the statue of Chief
Meskokonaye.
11:30-1:00
Take a break for a delicious lunch before
heading out of town.
1:00-6:00
Stop at Seven Clans Casino & Waterpark

Pine to Prairie
Birding Trail
Attention bird lovers! The Thief River Falls
area is included in Minnesota’s FIRST birding trail, a 223 mile route from Fergus Falls
to the shores of Lake of the Woods. With
45 separate sites and side trips along the
way, bird watchers and lovers of wildlife
will find this a virtual paradise! (Note:
the trail is now connected to Manitoba’s
birding trail to form an international
birding trail!)
Situated at the juncture of 3 major ecosystems—tall-grass prairie,
boreal forests and aspen parkland—this Northwestern Minnesota
trail provides a unique collection of
habitats which provide homes for a
tremendous variety of birds. Agassiz
National Wildlife Refuge, the largest wildlife refuge in the state
of Minnesota, is an incredible birding treasure, located just a short drive from Thief
River Falls. The Refuge is a haven for as
many as 280 species of birds. Look for a complete birding checklist and Pine to Prairie
booklet at the Thief River Falls Convention
and Visitors Bureau.
Fishing in the
Thief River Falls Area
The Red Lake River, in the
Thief River Falls area, offers
excellent fishing. Whether
you’re in waders, a float tube,
canoe or just fishing from
the bank, the opportunity
for walleyes, northern pike,
smallmouth bass, crappies
and a host of other species
is great!
Accessing the river is not
a problem with two boat
landings within the city
limits. You can also get to the
river through both city parks and below the dam.
Waterfowl and small game hunters coming to the Thief River
Falls area should remember to pack a fishing rod. There is
a fall run of walleyes in the Red Lake River. Walleyes will
move upriver and hold below the dam in October—a jig and
minnow are all it takes. With parking lots on both sides of the
river and a walkway on the east side, access is easy.
Hunt in the morning, fish the Red Lake River in the afternoon.
Visitors to the Thief River Falls area can have the best of both
worlds!

snowmobiling the
northwoods of MN
Thief River Falls has access to more than 500 miles of groomed
trails that interconnect to over 1,500 miles of trails in northwest Minnesota. Thief River Falls is a snowmobile hub for
northwest Minnesota with five different trails leading out of
the city. Snowmobilers can choose from countless daily loop
rides ranging from 50-200 miles. Snowmobiling was born in
this part of Minnesota and the many food and fuel stops along
the trails welcome all riders, whatever their brand.
Trails to the west connect with the North Dakota trail system
at the communities of Oslo and Hallock. Trails to the north connect to the community of Roseau and from there to the Canadian border and east to the Warroad and Baudette trail systems.
To the south, riders take trails that connect with Bemidji and
Detroit Lakes. Each trail is unique in offering a variety of terrain
including river riding and picturesque wilderness trails.
Arctic Cat snowmobiles have been manufactured in Thief River
Falls for over 35 years. The Arctic Cat plant is listed as having
one of the top 250 plant tours in the nation in the book entitled
“Watch It Made In The USA: A Visitors Guide To The Companies That Make Your Favorite Products.” Plant tours are free of
charge and offered weekdays at 1 p.m. (See Tours on page 25).
For trail maps and weekly snowmobile trail reports contact the Thief River Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau,

Watch Us Grow...
Arctic Cat, currently a $700M company, can trace its roots
to former Polar Manufacturing, which was started in 1960
in Thief River Falls. Shortly after, the name was changed to
Arctic Enterprises which began producing a wide-range of
snowmobiles. By 1978, the rapidly growing company had
purchased several boat manufacturers, as well, but following
several snowless winters, the company closed their facilities in
1982. The snowmobile manufacturer was reborn in 1984 as
Arctco, then renamed Arctic Cat in 1996. Today, the company
is a leading manufacturer of snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles
and side-by-sides in the United States, Canada, Europe, the
Middle East, and Asia.

Watch Us Grow...
The first school started in Thief River Falls in 1883, with ten
children from two families enrolled. The area grew so quickly
that in just ten years, the Central High School building was
erected, and by 1903, 1100 pupils were attending city
schools. Throughout the last hundred years, enrollment has
nearly doubled, and now Thief River Falls is home to a firstclass school district, operating a high school, middle school
and elementary school, with every student having access to
a computer or ipad. Of note: benefactor Ralph Engelstad,
who was raised in Thief River Falls, also built a state-of-the-art
$11.5 million hockey arena for the high school team in 2001.

Jefferson
Highway
The Jefferson Highway was
the first transcontinental road
to traverse the North American
continent from north to south, and
it was possibly the first dedicated
international highway in the
world!
Named for President Thomas
Jefferson, who acquired the
highway land when he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase,
the old Highway passed through Thief River Falls just west of
the current Digi-Key site on Barzen Avenue. Today look for the
designation signs!
Stretching from Winnipeg, Canada to New Orleans, the
Highway only existed as a named highway for a short period
of time until the new standardized numbering system was
instigated in the 1920s. It was also occasionally referred to as
the Palm to Pine Highway by motorcades traveling to and from
the sunny South to the great Northwoods.
The above information was taken from a Thief River Falls Eagle
Scout project created by Benjamin Beito.
