Termine Dog Shelter
South House has recently been organizing trips to the dog shelter in Sesto Fiorentino. We go
on Thursdays once a week to visit the dogs and to deliver money and dog food. Four to five students go every week to visit the lonely animals and to consider adopting one. During the week,
we organize bake sales to support this cause. Also, kids are welcome to bring in dog food or other accessories a dog might enjoy. The dog shelter looks after 300 dogs and counting! They need
70 kg of food per day to feed the dogs and last week we delivered 64 kg in addition to the money from a bake sale! There is a donation box in reception to help buy food and water, so please
donate as generously as you can. Remember, two Euros is enough to feed five hungry dogs.

After 5 years of
waiting the new
Windows operating
system is finally
here, Welcome...
OSX
The two newest OSs on the market!!!
Windows
Vista!!!!!
Microsoft improved almost everything in Windows XP when they made Windows Vista, resulting in a very good operating system.
I consider it’s best point by far to be the new Windows Media Center that
comes with it. When you buy a Windows Vista computer it usually comes with a TV tuner,
so you can watch TV on your computer. That’s not the best part though. You can actually
tell your computer your favorite TV shows and it will search all the channels and show
when and on what channel your favorite TV show is on. You can then tell it to record all
the episodes or just a specific one making it so you no longer have to stop doing whatever
you’re doing just to watch a TV show. You can also search for a movie and it will search
for a channel with that movie on so that it can record it. If you have and Xbox 360 it gets
even better… you can send your Windows Media Center to your Xbox 360, letting you
watch the TV shows on your TV instead of on your computer.
Now we get into the other Features
By other features I mean ones that are far better than Windows XP but not
new... look at OSX for Mac and you can find most of them already. One for the most
useful ones is Windows Flip 3d, using it you press ALT+TAB and it shows you all the
open Windows (see right). Windows Vista also includes a side bar where you can put
“Gadgets”. Now these two features are new for Microsoft but Flip 3d is a slightly better
version of what Exposé does on the Mac is the F9 key. As for “Gadgets” Apple called them
“Widgets” but they are the same thing and they appear with the F12 key.
With the millions of files that people keep on their computers you need an
easy way to search. On Windows Vista when you click the Start button a search box appears along with the menu. When you use it it finds things lightning fast. If you think that
seems familiar it’s because Spotlight on OSX does the exact same thing.
Windows Vista is a great Microsoft product. It definitely comes even with OSX,
even if it doesn’t beat it so if you are a Windows fan using XP you should definitely get
it, but if you are using OSX and happy with it you should stick with that.
Leopard
Apple finds a need to make new operating systems pretty much yearly. Tiger
was good, really good, but Apple needs better. Leopard is better.
Leopard includes all the features included in Tiger (The previous OSX) and a
few more. The new features are Time Machine and Spaces while they improved a lot of
the old features including Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Spotlight and iCal.
New Features
Time Machine
Time machine lets you basically go back in time on your computer. When
you activate time machine your computer remembers everything you do (on an external
hard drive) so if you want to find something but can’t and know where it was in the past
you can. It’s kind of hard to explain. The picture below shows what it looks like. In the
picture someone is looking at the current Documents folder. Lined up behind are all the
past documents folder. This would be confusing if it did it every day , you’d just get a
bunch of the same thing. Time Machine only saves a folder when you make a change to
it so every folder behind the original documents folder in the picture is different.
Spaces
Spaces lets you divide your computer into four “spaces”. For example you can
have a work space, a music space, a games space and a space for stuff that doesn’t fit in
one of those categories. When you press a certain key then you can see all your spaces
at once. It’s like having four computers in one computer all on one screen that can switch
between them.
Along with the other improvements this is a good thing to get if you have a bit of money
to spare, of it’s more than 70 euros though I don’t recommend it.
Time Machine
Windows Flip 3d
and sidebar
Windows Vista Warning!
A problem with the increased security ib Windows vista is that you can’t play SACD (high-def)
sounds on your computer.
Although Windows Vista advertises high-def (HDCP), no HDCP monitors for PCs currently exist or
are being produced.
For a full list of warnings (about 70 pages, yes 70) go to:
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html
Gaming: A thing that is definitly better for Leopard than Windows Vista is that Leaop-
ard keeps OSX as it base operating system while Windows Vista makes a new one. This
means that Mac games will keep working on Leopard while most PC games will no longer
work on Windows Vista
ARE YOU AN INTERNET ADDICT?
Page 2
By Chiara Bini
Have you ever thought about
how much time you spend on the computer or watching television? Doesn’t it
make your eyes itch and hurt? Did you
know that it can cause brain damage?
According to recent survey done
in the United States, the average Teen (811) are using internet about 67.1% and
in 3 years time it will gradually increase
up to 71.4%. The young teens (12-14) are
on the internet at the average of 74.3%
and it will increase up to 84.7% in 2010
People use the computer daily
wth internet because you can do so many
things on the computer and you can find
out things so easily instead of looking in
books or actaully reading them. The young
teens use the computer less because they
spend more time outside and do more excersise. This is a good thing to do because
they get more fresh air and they spend
time communicating with other people
and are not only stuck to a computer 24/7.
Older teenagers don’t realize how
much time they spend on the computer
because time passes quickly once you
are stuck at the screen for hours. Older
teens also watch movies and download
songs and play games which is alot of
fun but some of the teens do not realize that it can cause brain damage. If
you stay in front of a screen instead of
going out and having fresh air and doing excersise it can make you more negative when you get off the computer. Two students from from a University in the United States
have told the readers a positive outlook about using a computer:
‘I have had easy access to the Web from a home computer. The Web has
been very positive as it has kept me abreast and I can go to the site pages from
home and not wait for the University computers which are constantly busy. I do
not think that having easy access to the Web has deterred me from reading. If anything it guided me where to go for reading material. Using the Web and email
has been an active experience, directing me to further reading and bringing up
ideas which I have gone on to share with others. It has been a forum for discussion’.
‘I regularly correspond by email and always use the web to complement
my information from the library’.
Two students from a school in the United States have given a negative
outlook about computer use:
‘Everytime i get home I get addicted to the computer and I do not realize
that the time goes by very quickly and when I get off the computer my parents
see me more grumpy, tired and watery in the eyes. I have a lack of knowledge
after i get off the computer and do my homework. My parents are trying to cut me
down. I have been feeling much better than other days that i always was on the
computer’.

Sun exposure effects the skin throughout a person’s lifetime. The damage gradually builds up until, by adulthood, many
sun related problems may begin to show. The damage is caused by invisible UV (ultraviolet) radiation, a combination of rays
emitted by the sun onto the earth. There are three different types of UV rays:
-One
dev in five
e
thei lop sk people
in
r lif
etim cance will
r in
e.
Ultraviolet A (UVA)- The most
UV radiation on the surface of the
earth is from UVA rays. They penetrate
the dermis layer of skin.
Ultraviolet B (UVB)- There
are less of these rays at the earth’s
surface than UVA rays because the
ozone layer (the protective layer in the
earth’s atmosphere) absorbs most of
them. However, pollution and global
warming are causing holes and
thinning of the ozone layer, and more
UVB rays have been recently present
on the surface of the earth. UVB rays
are the most harmful form of
UV radiation.
Ultraviolet C (UVC)- Although
these solar rays would be especially
harmful to the skin, they are completely absorbed by the ozone layer.

Tanning and Burning: When UV
rays reach the epidermis, they react with
cells to produce a colored substance called
melanin. Melanin travels up to the surface
of the skin to protect it from the UV rays
and eventually the skin becomes darker
and tans. Over time the UV rays will cause
the skin to burn which causes redness,
pain, and peeling.
No one is immune from the risk of sun
damage. However some individuals are
more likely to sustain damage than
others. Some people tan very easily and
rarely burn, whereas others burn very
easily and rarely develop a tan. A variety
of factors determine whether an someone
tans or burns after sun exposure, including complexion and skin type, amount of
recent sun exposure and time of year.
The Effects: Excessive sun exposure
(tanning and burning) alters the structure
of the skin’s cells, and may result in
premature aging , noncancerous and
cancerous skin tumors, immune system
damage and eye damage over time. The
name of the most serious and common
form of skin cancer is melanoma.
Prevention: People can protect themselves from the damaging UV rays of the
sun by limiting sun exposure (especially
during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4
p.m.), wearing protective clothing and
applying sunscreen with a sun protection
factor (SPF ) of at least 15.
Bronzers: If you still desire a tan
glow, there are many varieties of sunless
tanning avaible such as sprays and
lotions that can be applied in your own
home. Many magazines and reviews recommend Clarins Auto-Bronzant or Banana
Boat SunDial. Bronzers are a great way to
obtain a natural looking glow without sun
exposure and the risk of damage.

The Amulet of Samarkand
Book I of the Bartimaeus Trilogy
Nathaniel is 5 years old when his parents sell him to the government and flee. He is given to
the magician, Mr. Underwood, to be his apprentice. Nathaniel doesn’t like his new master but
Mrs. Underwood is extremely kind and likes Nathaniel. Things go fine until his eleventh birthday where he is publicly humiliated by the magician, Simon Lovelace. His master does not defend him. Nathaniel is furious and vows revenge on Lovelace. He practices magic and summonings of minor magical creatures until he feels he is ready to take his revenge. He summons the
5,000-year old djinni, Bartimaeus, to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from Lovelace. Unwittingly,
the boy plunges himself into a situation more dangerous than he’d ever faced, full of murder,
danger, and really bad jokes made by the sarcastic Bartimaeus. Switching from Bartimaeus’s hilarious first-person view to third-person narrative about Nathaniel, this is a must-read book.
Set in modern day London, ruled by magicians, this is a hilarious and gripping thriller.
The Golem’s Eye
Book II of the Bartimaeus Trilogy
Now 14, Nathaniel works in the Department of Internal Affairs trying to stop a group of commoners
who are responsible for small rebellions against the magician-run government. These commoners call
themselves the Resistance. They attack government buildings, etc., in rebellion against the magicians’
rule. Now, they’re planning to rob the tomb of a great magician to use the artifacts there against
the government. The Resistance aren’t the only problems, though: an unknown individual is using
ancient magic to control a Golem who is wreaking havoc on London. Meanwhile, you also follow the
story of Kitty, a member of the Resistance, who was born with a “resilience” to magic. Now, Nathaniel summons up the 5,000 year old djinni, Bartimaeus, yet again to stop the Resistance, and the
person responsible for the golem attacks. The third-person narrative switches focus between Kitty and
Nathaniel, while Bartimaeus continues to give hilarious and sarcastic first-person views to the tale. A
captivating follow up to The Amulet of Samarkand.
Ptolemy’s Gate
Book III of the Bartimaeus Trilogy
The hilarious djinni introduced in Amulet of Samarkand and Golem’s Eye is back, or, more accurately,
he hasn’t left in three years. Still holding his wit and wisdom, his essence is in pain from being held
in a solid form for 3 years. Nathaniel, now Information Minister, writes propaganda to bolster the
commoners belief that England is winning the foreign wars and tracking down the traitors within the
government. Kitty Jones is in hiding as an apprentice to a magician, learning enough from her master
and research to summon Bartimaeus. When Nathaniel catches up with Kitty, the two of them and the
djinni must work together to defeat the most dangerous demons they’d encountered yet. Ptolemy’s
Gate is a exciting conclusion to the trilogy, footnotes and all. Readers will find out about Bartimaeus’s
past, while Nathaniel’s compassion comes through his mask of John Mandrake.
Trilogy rating: 8/10

The Chimney Sweeper
William Blake
When my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue,
Could scarcely cry weep weep weep weep,
So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep.
Theres little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head
That curled like a lambs back was shav’d, so I said.
Hush Tom never mind it, for when your head’s bare,
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair
And so he was quiet. & that very night.
As Tom was a sleeping he had such a sight
That thousands of sweepers Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack
Were all of them lock’d up in coffins of black,
And by came an Angel who had a bright key
And he open’d the coffins & set them all free.
Then down a green plain leaping laughing they run
And wash in a river and shine in the Sun.
Then naked & white, all their bags left behind.
They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind.
And the Angel told Tom, if he’d be a good boy,
He’d have God for his father & never want joy.
And so Tom awoke and we rose in the dark
And got with our bags & our brushes to work.
Tho’ the morning was cold, Tom was happy & warm
So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm.

O bella bionda,
Sei come l’onda!
Of cool sweet dew and radiance mild
The moon a web of silence weaves
In the still garden where a child
Gathers the simple salad leaves.
A moondew stars her hanging hair
And moonlight kisses her young brow
And, gathering, she sings an air:
Fair as the wave is, fair, art thou!
Be mine, I pray, a waxen ear
To shield me from her childish croon
And mine a shielded heart for her
Who gathers simples of the moon.

In Brazil people play different sports such as footvolley. Footvolley is a ball
game played by people on the beach.
It is similar to volleyball, the only difference is that you cannot use your
hands. The sport was invented in Rio de Janeiro on Ipanema beach and is
played all over Brazil. It is very popular especially with men.It is a really
hard physical sport that requires a lot of skill. The idea of the game is to get
the ball over the net, just like volleyball. The court is 30x60 ft long, the net is
6.10 high. The court has to be on sand. The players wear their balthing suits
and bare feet. This sport was invented in the 60s but did not become really
popular till the 80s when volleyball became popular in Brazil.
I havent played this game.it is too much like hard work and need a lot of
skill . I enjoy watching it with a cold coconut juice in my hand
Battle of the Gods
Fender Stratocaster VS. Gibson Les Paul
When you look at the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul you you are seeing the two guitars
that have had the most influence in the Guitar World.
The Fender Stratocaster was originally designed by Leo Fender and Freddia Tavares in the early
1950’s and has been one of the most influencial, and popular guitars since it was invented, many
think it is the best in the world.
The Strat is the best thing for a Blues person, or even Soft Rock, it has three single-coil pickups (some
models have humbuckers), each with staggered magnetic poles, it has a three-way selector switch (fiveway since 1977, one volume knob, and two tone controls. The body is made out of either Alder or
Ash, the neck is made out of Maple, and the fretboard is made out of either Maple, Rosewood, or Pau
Ferro. The Fender Strat has also always come with a bolt-on neck design.
To name a few, the Fender Stratocaster was used by Jimi Hendrix, and still is used by Eric Clapton,
Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin of Deep Purple, Bill Carson, Tom Morello, John Mayer, and David Gilmour of
Pink Floyd.
The Gibson Les Paul was a model designed by Gibson president, Ted McCarthy, and
accomplished Jazz guitarist, Les Paul (whom it is named after) right after the Fender
Telecaster was released in the early 1950s, and since its existance, the design has been one of the most
enduring and popular musical instruments in the world of music.
A Les Paul is perfect for a Metal person, or Hard Rock, some people have even used it for Jazz, this
amazing guitar has two humbucker pickups (originally single-coils), it has a three-way selector switch,
two volume knobs, and two tone controls. The body is either made out of Mahogany or Maple, the neck
is made out of Maple, and the fretboard is made of either Ebony or Rosewood.
The Gibson Les Paul, as all of the other Gibsons, has always been built as a neck-thru neck design.
To name some notable Les Paul users, the Les Paul has been used by Duane Allman, Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, The Edge of U2, Ace Frehley of Kiss, John Frusciante
of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, Billy Gibbons
of ZZ Top, Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy, Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, James
Hetfield of Metallica, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, Mick Jones of The Clash, Steve Jones of The
Sex Pistols, Lenny Kravitz, John Lennon, Daron Malakian of System of a Down, Bob Marley, John
Mayer, Paul McCartney, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Tom Morello, Jimmy Page, Les Paul, oe Perry
of Aerosmith, Randy Rhoads, Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy, Tom
Sholtz of Boston, Slash of Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden, Mick Taylor
of The Rolling Stones, Keith Urban, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Walsh of The Eagles, Zakk Wylde, Frank
Zappa, and Diego Edsel.
The Fender Stratocaster and The Gibson Les Paul have revolutionized the world of Music throughout
their years of existance. Fender also has another great instrument called the Fender Telecaster, while
Gibson also has the Gibson SG, Flying V, and the Explorer.
I own and have played many Les Pauls, and I have played a Stratocaster, and to my point of view they
are both great, but they each suit a completely opposite style of Music, that is why it is so hard to say
which is better, but pricewise, you are better off with a Stratocaster.
Both Gibson and Fender offer a company that offers these and all the other models out of cheaper
material, but a better price, Squier by Fender, and Epiphone by Gibson.

Beauty Recipes for
Skin
Use to gently and thoroughly exfoliate
the top layer of dead skin cells. Relieves
the itch of dry skin and leaves it soft and
smooth-
Combine the dry ingredients in a blender
or food processor until they are reduced
to a coarse meal. Keep this “scrub base”
in a glass jar with a screw top in your
refrigerator until ready to use. When
you want to use the scrub base, scoop
out 1/4 cup into a small bowl, and stir in
enough of the liquid ingredients (vary it
by what you have on hand -- yogurt and
milk are best, but water works too) to
make a paste. Yogurt and milk are natural exfoliates known as alpha hydroxy
acids, and they will slough off dead skin
cells even without scrubbing. Scoop up
the paste with your hands or a washcloth,
and rub over your body to exfoliate.
Rinse thoroughly.

Your laid-back food attitude makes you easy to
please. Just be certain that relaxed doesn’t turn
into careless. Too much junk food can lead to an
unhealthy lifestyle. God entrusted your body to
you, and He expects you to take care of it. A little

more energy. Like Mom always said, “Eat your
vegetables.”

generous and truthful to all.
