The underground house-ballroom scene
is going “national.” “National” in the
sense that whereas New York City used to
once dominate the ball scene as its epic
center, nowadays Chicago, Atlanta, and
Washington D.C. are hosting the most
anticipated balls of the year. From the
$5,000 Grand Prize at the New York City
“Collections Ball ” in May to the House of
Khan’s notorious Memorial Day weekend
soiree in Washington D.C., the Spring
2006 season promises to be full of memorable moments and hot-bois abound.
Flavamen’s ballroom correspondent Frank
Mizrahi gives us the official “blow-byblow” of where you need to be and what
you should expect from this season’s hottest “must-attend” functions. We’ll see
you on the runway!
FLAVALIFE
THE METAMORPHOSIS BALL
Hosted by:Father Flexx Vivant & Father Jose
“Stiffy” Revlon
Date:March 4, 2006
Location:Miami Florida
Contact:latnstylzz@aol.com
Admission:$25 be4 12am, $30 after 12am
Start Time:12am
Website:http://walk4mewednesdays.net
Frank’s Inside Word: Expect a medium-sized
turnout at this Miami function with
plenty of Latin papi’s and mommies, especially the Florida chapters of the houses of Infiniti and
Mizrahi. Stay the weekend and enjoy the hot Latino festival on Sunday night, right after the ball.
SUPERBALL SUNDAY V
Hosted by:The Legendary Icon Mother Jack
Mizrahi
Date:Sunday March 12, 2006
Location:New York City, Club Escuelita,
39th Between 8th and 9th
Contact:Destra528@aol.com
Admission:$15 before 12:30, $20 after
Start Time:1am
Website:www.escuelita.com
Frank’s Inside Word: The Superball Sunday’s
have been a huge mini-ball success
in New York City. Superball Sunday
V will undoubtedly bring its usual
array of highlights, runway divas,
vogue femmes, and sexy sex-sirens. Look for the sex-siren ruler
Buddah Balenciaga as well as that
man with the million dollar smile,
the legendary Whitney MiyakeMugler. Inside word also has it that
the icon Octavia St. Laurent (of
“Paris Is Burning” fame) will also
be walking that night.
THE DEFINITIONS BALL
Hosted by:Father Ahora
Date:March 18, 2006
Location:Charlotte, North Carolina
Club Illusion 1000, Charlotte, NC
Contact:authentic3005@aol.com
Admission:$25 all night
Start Time:12 a.m
Frank’s Inside Word: In recent years the North
Carolina scene has made mostly
unsuccessful attempts to build its
national ballroom presence. The
“Definitions Ball”, commented by
the Legendary Selvyn and Jack
Mizrahi might be North Carolina’s
first shot at gold. Expect a lot of
nearby Virginia and Baltimore/D.C.
ballroom kids, especially Khans,
Revlons, and a few Mizrahi’s. That
night a special awards ceremony
will be held for some of the ballroom’s most revered senior members including the show-stopping
Andre Mizrahi and the legendary
“Realness” ruler Dray Ebony. With
a $2006 grand prize for “open to
all face”, divas like Philly’s Jacen
Prodigy and New York City’s sexy
Father Ruben Mizrahi are likely to
be in the building.
HAROLD BALENCIAGA’S
D.C. CAPITOL AWARD’S BALL
Date:March 25, 2006
Location:Washington D.C.
Frank’s Inside Word: Washington D.C. has long
been dominated by two houses:
The legendary and infamous House
of Khan, and the ever growing and
rockstocking House of Balenciaga.
The “D.C. Capitol Award’s Ball” will
come on the heels of the Nostaglia
Ball held on February 18th, and is
expected to feature an equally impressive sized crowd. Considering
that the Legendary Father Harold
Balenciaga is throwing this function (the King of D.C.) it’s likely that
attendance will be mega. Look for
the sexy Maryland boys like Father
Dennis Karan and Leon Khan as
well as the “golden girl” beauties
of D.C. such as Mother Ayanna
Khan and Eygpt Balenciaga.
THE P.O.C.C. BALL
Hosted by:Brooklyn’s People of Color in Crisis
Date:April 2, 2006
Location:New York City
Club Spirit, 530 W 27th Street
Contact:Michael@pocc.org
Admission:Free all night!
Start Time:1:30pm
Website:www.pocc.org
Frank’s Inside Word: Other than the Latex Ball,
this is without question, New York
City’s most anticipated function of
the year. With no admission cover,
FLAVALIFE look for a standing room only,
jam-packed crowd (1000+). Expect a major turnout by the three
undisputed “powerhouses” of the
contemporary scene: House of
Mizrahi, Balenciaga, and Prodigy.
This will be the ball that creates
new legends, and burns the reputation of those already deemed as
such. It’s a must see. Bring your
camera and a fold up chair.
SPRING BLING EXPLOSION 2006
Hosted by:The Legendary-Icon House of
Infiniti Detroit
Date:Saturday April 8, 2006
Location:Detroit, Michigan
The Tom Phillip Post
Admission:$30
Frank’s Inside Word: Yet another Detroit-Midwest function commented by the
Legendary Father Neiman Marcus
Escada. Look for a heavy Detroit/
Chicago crowd with plenty of Prodigy’s and Escada’s in the mix. The
super sexy Joseph Balenciaga (sex
siren) will also be in the building.
THE COLLECTIONS BALL
Hosted by:Godmother Jasmine Mizrahi
Date:April 15, 2006
Location:New York City
(to be announced in March)
Contact:Destra528@aol.com
Admission:$30
Start Time:12am
Frank’s Inside Word: The official millionairess of
the ballroom scene, Atlanta’s Jasmine Mizrahi will be hosting her
first New York City ball. With the
FLAVALIFE
grand prize being $5,000 for the
house that wins the most trophies,
you can guarantee that this will be
the hottest ball in New York City in
April.
THE NEW YORK CITY AWARD’S BALL
Hosted by:Father Andre &
Mother Jack Mizrahi
Date:April 29, 2006
Location:New York
(to be announced in March)
Contact:Destra528@aol.com
Admission: $30
Start Time:11pm
Frank’s Inside Word: This is the Oscar’s of the
ballroom scene-the absolute best
and brightest. Get ready for the
red carpet. Look for the men of
Ballroom Rockstar Magazine as
well as hundreds of the ballroom’s
super-divas.
PANDEMONIUM IN PARADISE BALL
Hosted by:Japan Manolo-Blahnik
Date:May 6, 2006
Location:Chicago,Illnois
Contact:Japan_Manolo_Blahnik@Yahoo.com
Frank’s Inside Word: The newcomer Japan
Blahnik, who surprised audiences
with her win over Montez Mizrahi
for men’s runway at the Atlanta
Awards Ball in January, is throwing
her first Chicago function. Insiders
say the ball will be commented by
the Legendary Selvin Mizrahi. We’ll
see. Grand Prize for the evening
will be $1000 for “Realness as a
House.”
HOUSE OF KHAN BALL
Date:Memorial Day Weekend
Location:Washington, D.C.
Date:May 27, 2006
Admission:$30
Contact:James Khan, 202-359-0637
Frank’s Inside Word: Memorial Weekend just
wouldn’t be the same with the legendary house of khan ball. Expect
the entire rocksocking D.C. based
Khan contingency, as well as
plenty of gay boi “passerbyers” in
town for the rest of D.C.’s delicious
weekend events.
Father Oreo Omni is expected to
storm the floor for sex-siren and
All American Runway, as are the
sexy boys of the House of Mizrahi,
including the light-skin bandits’
Twan & Chuck Mizrahi. Expect a
“who’s who” Chicago crowd with
plenty of New Yorkers in town for
the special occasion.
THE FASHION TRACE BALL
Hosted by:Japan Manolo-Blahnik, Yummie
Prodigy & Selvyn Mizrahi Presents
Location:Ball Room Headquarters,
Chicago,IL.
Admission:$30
Contact:Japan_Manolo_Blahnik@Yahoo.com
Frank’s Inside Word: New York City’s Jack Mizrahi, Chicago’s Nieman Marcus
Escada & and Philadephia’s Jay

June fling. The always-delicious

Ruff Ryder
This biracial Philly resident proves the City of Brotha-ly Love is alive and well
– and fine as hell. Long, lean, and bronzed, this thug from tha east coast has
a voice smooth as silk … made for a jazz radio station more than for a guy
who works with his hands, as Ruff does in his day-to-day construction gig.
Admitting to a strong fondness for fine ladies, this lanky sex machine also
purrs like a cat when ya bring up the idea of back-door lovin’ in the bed – face
turning red as he looks away, chuckling that laugh he’s got that would make
an invitation to lunch sound pornographic. This freak is packin’, and he likes
using it for all he’s worth, however and whenever he can.
Confident to the point of being cocky, Ruff Ryder poses for nude shots like
he walks around the city that way; it’s rare to find a brotha this comfortable
in his own skin. And what skin! The handsome, horny thug admits he easily
turns heads on the streets, though someday wants to find that one special
someone … “to curl up in da bed with, get yo’ freak on with … maybe even
lick some chocolate syrup off of, until she’s screamin’ my name and showin’
no shame.”
He’s had his share of offers, but it’s not anyone who can get into the man’s
jeans … or his heart. “Y’all can look all ya want, but ya gots to get permission
to touch,” he says, claiming to have put his promiscuous days behind him.
Indeed, we can deal with just looking – because God knows, with this fine
brotha, that looking is pleasant enough.

BLACK AMERICA’S GAY PROBLEM
-- CAN ATTITUDES CHANGE
IN THE BLACK CHURCH?
By Jasmyne A. Cannick
EDITOR’S NOTE: With the
Medicare nightmare, Katrina
aftermath and the war in Iraq
hitting black America hard, can
black church leaders resist bullying gays and get their priorities straight? PNS contributor
Jasmyne Cannick says the tide may be turning
toward acceptance. Cannick is a board member of
the National Black Justice Coalition and a member
of the National Association of Black Journalists.

LOS ANGELES--After two years of public hatred toward gays from black ministers around
the country, attitudes toward gays may finally
be changing in the black church. But will cooler
heads prevail as another contentious presidential election draws closer and dollars and pulpits are again up for grabs?
Fearing a repeat of the 2004 presidential election, and in an effort to counter the divisive
messaging from the Republican Party and
white Christian evangelicals, the National Black
Justice Coalition, the nation’s black gay civil
rights group, hosted in Atlanta on Jan. 20-21 a
summit of black ministers and black gay activists from around the country to discuss publicly
the widespread prejudice against gay men and
lesbians within black churches.
The first of its kind, the summit featured the
Rev. Al Sharpton, who made good on his 2005
promise of fighting homophobia in the black
church.
This meeting comes on the heels of a meeting
between black lesbian and gay leaders and Nation of Islam Leader Minister Louis Farrakhan to
discuss the inclusion of gays during last year’s
Million More Movement March.
Although there has been relatively little action
on part of Congress or the president to move
forward with a ban against same-sex marriage,
many black gays are worried that conservative
groups will attempt yet again to woo the black
vote by using them as scapegoats.
Maryland Senate hopeful Kwesi Mfume recently came out in support of extending equal rights
to gay and lesbian couples but stopped short
of endorsing gay marriage. Before California’s
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that
would have provided his gay constituents with
equal rights, five of the six members of the California Legislative Black Caucus and the California NAACP all voted in favor of the bill.
So perhaps attitudes are changing in a U.S.
community that many believe to be the most
homophobic of all the races.
54 FLAVALIFE
In a November 2003, a Pew Research Poll found
that blacks oppose gay marriage by roughly 2to-1.
In the aftermath of Katrina, the war in Iraq, the
Medicare nightmare and the issues with Social
Security reform, maybe blacks have realized
that they have bigger fish to fry than worrying
about two men or two women wanting to provide for their families.
At the end of the day, the national crisis for
blacks is not gays getting married. The real issue for blacks is how easily we allowed ourselves to be distracted and bamboozled into
thinking that it was.
While I don’t think the black church is going to
do a 180 on gay marriage overnight, it is very
possible that Sharpton and other progressive
black ministers can lead by example.
However, for gays, this is going to continue
to be an uphill battle. Even though most black
gays and lesbians attend black churches, they
are still outsiders. Many blacks still consider
homosexuality the mother of all sins, though
many have a family member who identifies as
lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. When you
add to that the common misperception that the
fight for gay rights is a “white thing,” there’s the
very real potential for another nasty campaign
season. And while gays may have Rev. Sharpton, Mfume and a few civil rights organizations
on their side, they have relatively little clout
in influencing policy compared to the voters.
That’s why white conservative groups are sparing no dollar in trying to entice support from
black ministers.
More than a few mega-church pastors have already teamed up with powerful conservative
groups to cajole and lobby black voters into
supporting anti-gay initiatives and the Republican Party. Utilizing the media, these pulpit bullies are spreading their hate doctrine via television, radio and the Internet.
One thing is for sure: Silence is not going to be
an opportunity afforded to black leaders and
elected officials, including members of Congress this time around. We are going to have
to talk about the black community’s gay problem and deal with this issue head on. We’ve already seen the mayhem that can come from the
wrong message at election time.
The message this time around needs to be one
of common sense. Gay marriage is not going
to put us in a costly war or solve our healthcare problems. However, if we let gay marriage
take our eyes from the prize, we will ensure
that blacks -- gay and straight alike -- will stay
at the bottom of the totem pole for another four
years.
Hip-Hop Stars
Find Gay Is Good
By Rod McCullom
“I did it for the people who needed some love,
you know what I mean?”
That’s how DeMario Thornton—aka Raz B,
the former member of the chart-topping boy
band B2K—describes his decision to play at a
black pride event last summer. The 20 year-old
heart-throb turned more than a few when he
announced that August he would play at Oakland’s Black in the Life. “They approached me,”
he recalls in a recent interview. “And when they
did, they were kind of scared about it because
of the type of artist I am.”
For the most part, young male hip-hop and R&B
performers are almost compelled to publicly
proclaim their masculinity, virility and availability to women. Some stars—for example, 50
Cent, Ja Rule—have made headlines with their
“no homo” comments, which, in both cases,
followed gay rumors. Grammy Award-winning artist Usher also jumped into the fray. In
the December/January issue of Complex, he
was asked about the rumored sex parties with
groupies.
Were there ever homosexual activities in any of
these orgies?
There was women-on-women but never manon-man. Shit, nowhere near that! Hell no! No
one that I ever roll with or would ever roll with
would get down like that.
But times change. In late January, Raz B performed for the boys again—this time at Club
501 in Washington DC. In an interview at the
event—a podcast by PinkMafiaRadio.com—he
says that his decision to play for the gays was
not difficult. “If you don’t like someone because of their sexual preference, there’s something wrong with you,” he said. “I’m about lifting people up, not putting people down.”
Raz B says his strong spiritual base that lead
him first to Oakland and later Washington.
“God led me to do that,” he says. “And to get
my confirmation, two days after I did the performance, Kanye’s on TV talking about issues with
a lot of gay people and stuff like that, you know
what I mean?”
This was an reference to the Kanye West’s August interview on MTV. “Everyone in hip-hop
discriminates against gay people,” Kanye said,
adding that on the streets, gay is “the opposite,
the exact opposite word of hip-hop. Not just
hip-hop, but America just discriminates. And I
wanna just, to come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, `Yo, stop it.’”
To highlight society’s
hypocritical homophobic attitudes, Raz
B points out that
some artists and
athletes have been
accused of rapes or
assaults. “But if you’re gay, that’s supposed to
be worst. That’s just wrong.”
Several other black male artists are following
that route. In November, Mr. Cheeks—former
front man for the Lost Boys and the rapper responsible for the mega party hit “Lights Camera Action”—performed at The Edge in our nation’s capitol, one of the biggest gay black clubs
in the nation. In February, The Edge was also
supposed to host Ray J—the younger brother
of pop icon Brandy, whose boyish looks and
melodious voice have thrilled both men and
women. But Ray J’s club date was cancelled; no
particular reason was given, but the promoters
hoped to reschedule his appearance. Instead,
they booked Tyson Beckford, well known to be
gay-friendly and supportive HIV/AIDS causes.
Ticket sales soared.
Raz B says that he and Ray J will perform for
their gay fans. “We support everything,” he said
at the January club event. “We can’t be afraid
to step out of the box. I’m proud of my boy Ray
J. People call me gay and him gay, but it takes
a lot of humility to do something like that because you get persecuted.” The result: Both Raz
B and Ray J may tour more for gay audiences.
“June is gay pride month and my new album
drops on June 13th. That’s my birthday when I
turn 21. So, I’ll be doing more gay events.”
Raz B is crafting his own solo career and his
new website, RazMe.com, displays his maturity.
The new album, “Raz: Revealer of Secrets,” is a
departure from the bubblegum hip-hop of B2K.
A huge bonus: Michael Jackson will appear one
of the tracks. “of all the artists, Michael Jackson
chos eto work with me,” he proudly says. “The
music is more alternative, rock and roll, kind of
country. Really different.” The newer sound, independent label and more mature styling may
be prompting him to expand his horizons.
It’s great to see this level of maturity from a hiphop artist, especially one so young. And here’s
an added bonus: Surprisingly, he is not upset
by the gay rumors that began after his first
club appearance. DeMario Thornton says it’s all
good. “No discrimination to anybody. I come
here with a heart of love.”

Tidus Interviews
Quincy LeNear &
Deondray Gossett
Creators of the DL Chronicles
Look out John Singleton and Spike Lee. We have
two new writers/ producers/ directors ready to
make their public debut with their guns blazing. I
was at a premiere screening in Oakland, CA this
past December and I got the honor of being one
of the first to watch the pilot episode of a provocative series about sexual discovery cleverly titled
The DL Chronicles. Believe me when I say that
it was a great experience. This show takes the
everyday decisions that men who have sex with
men go through. The series is set to look at the experiences of different DL circumstances from the
point of view of a young writer, Chadwick Williams,
who narrates the series. It examines all men, from
men working executive level jobs to street corner
hustlers. The DL Chronicles portrays the face of
the DL man as a learner of life and not one who
hides from his reality.
Who are these triple-threats, you may ask? Quincy
Lenear and Deondray Gossett are their names and
they are the masterminds behind this innovative
project. Upon meeting them, I got the idea that
Quincy was more of the social type and Deondray
was the shy type, but I came to realize that they
are both pretty social. Deondray also co-stars in
the short film On the Low. So, I had the chance
to get to know the two and find out what fueled
them to start such a bold series. Creating a drama
that pushes ignored envelopes isn’t the only thing
that makes this series interesting. They are also
a couple, a very sexy couple if I do say so myself.
They are an example that the combination of personal and professional, if used right, can yield remarkable results.
The episode was very interesting. It involves a
married couple, Wes and Sarah Thomas, who are
having intimacy issues. And all of a sudden, Sarah’s brother Ty moves in. After bumping heads with
Wes, sexual tension starts to heat up. There is a
lot more to the episode, but I won’t ruin it for you.
I’ll only say that it is a must see for anybody and
because of it, I had to interview this up and coming
power couple.
Tidus: I would first like to thank you both on behalf
of FlavaLife magazine for taking the time to interview with us.
Quincy: Welcome, we are actually honored that
Flava wanted to do an interview with us.
Tidus: My first question is, what inspired you two
to start the series and how long did it take you from
the first step up to finishing the pilot episode?
Quincy: Deondray and I were watching Oprah
Whinfrey’s special about men on the DL and felt
that it was a misrepresentation on intentions of
the DL man. They only showed it from a point of
56 FLAVALIFE
view of women who were infected with the HIV virus, so it only was the negative side of the DL life,
depicting them as deceitful men who only lie to
women and infect them with diseases from other
gay men. And we both knew that is not true.
Deondray: To add on to Quincy’s answer, yeah we
felt that the image of DL men was completely distorted, so we personally wanted to expose people
to the more positive and real image.
Quincy: Second part of your question, we came
up with the idea for the series at the beginning of
2004. During the first year we pretty much worked
to get people to work on it, someone to produce
it, just a main plan on how to get it done. Shooting
for the pilot episode took place June of 2005- it
only took two weekends. And everyone who was
working on it weren’t even getting paid; they were
just people who really believed in the project.
Tidus: Damn, that’s dedication for you. At some
point in time did either of you relate to any of the
characters in The DL Chronicles? And did anyone
portray a particularly masculine role before identifying as gay?
Quincy: Yeah, I think I have a part of all of the characters. Yet, I think if you are gay, there was some
point in time in your life where you did relate to any
one of the characters. Fighting with your sexuality
is a part of the evolution throughout one’s life. I
can mainly relate to Wes, the DL man who wants
to be married and to be seen to be living the ideal
heterosexual life.
Deondray: Of course! I can relate to more than
just one of the characters. Growing up, I took on
the personality of Ty, being very vague about my
sexuality when telling people. Not really saying
I’m straight or gay, just leaving something to the
imagination. I even relate to the wife, Sarah, as far
as having aspirations for a family. Wanting to have
children and wanting to be loved in your relationship can usually be hard when you are gay.
Tidus: I truly agree with you. Just to get off the
series for a moment, when and how did the both
of you meet?
Deondray: We met in ’96. Quincy is originally from
Chicago and came to go to school in Los Angeles.
Before knowing each other, we had a mutual friend
in college that always used to say to one or the
other that they had a friend that reminded them of
the other, which was before he had even known
that either one of us was gay.
Tidus: That’s hot. As a couple, I would assume
that you two have complete different personalities.
Were there any artistic differences before or during
the creating stages of this project?
Quincy: All the time. But we have both learned
how to weigh the best of both our ideas on what
should be written, production decisions, and who
should be chosen to play what role. But we marry
the best of ours ideas and usually come up with
results that we are both cool with. We take on two
different roles when we do work together. I act as
the visionary and come up with what we should
do and Deondray is the executioner and comes up
with a plan on how to get it done. And because of
it, we actually prefer to only work with each other.
Tidus: Are there any other projects people should
anticipate after viewing The DL Chronicles outside
of the following episodes?
Quincy: There are other projects in the works such
as other series and a few features films.
Tidus: That’s real cool. An ongoing argument that
will probably never be settled is: “Are men born gay
or is it always a choice?” What are your feelings
on that argument?
Quincy: Generalizations can’t really prove whether
or not a man is born gay or chooses to be. Environment and genetics are two completely different comparisons when addressing that subject.
Where does being gay lie? Is it in the physical act
or do you actually live a gay life in order to be perceived as a gay man?
Deondray: I absolutely think it is genetic. I feel
with today’s discrimination towards gay people, no
one would consciously choose to be gay. Men are
born gay, but are not aware of it even if there are
telltale signs of it in early ages. Men learn to notice it and except it as they grown older.
Tidus: How do you feel about the current portrayal
of black and Latino gay men in the media?
Quincy: There is real a lack of portrayal. And
when there is a portrayal, we only get the more
stereotypical, real feminine gay man who dresses
in women’s clothing and just flames out. If you
get an image that is the least bit masculine, he’s a
cheater, he neglects his children.
Deondray: I feel the same as Quincy. Right now,
the media is only comfortable with the stereotypes. They don’t feel as threatened when they
see the queen, or the extremely shy man who
holds everything inside. Actually exploring the real
DL experience can help film and print as far as creating more positive portrayals.
Tidus: Do you two personally feel that in a group
of people who need as much support as possible,
that the DL man works against the goal that we all
are trying to achieve for respect among their heterosexual counterparts?
Quincy: No, if you understand why the phenomenon exists and why there is so much stigma
behind being DL, when you look at the classes,
families, and communities that these men come
from, you can fully know what these men are going through. I feel that the DL man is actually the
missing link between gay and straight. Defining
what actually makes a man.
Deondray: After the whole Down Low scene was
brought to the mainstream’s attention, a woman
approached me on the street and she was trying
to pursue me. After short conversation, I told her
that I was gay. She responded “So, you must be
on the DL” and I told her that I wasn’t on the DL.
She replied back that I would have to be DL due to
the fact that I didn’t look gay. I continued explain
my sexuality, but she refused to accept the idea
that I was gay, looking the way that I did and not
being on the DL. So, the DL man isn’t really working against us; it is the straight perception of gay
people that keeps the DL man from contributing to
the community.
Tidus: On your reactions from people who have
already viewed the DL Chronicles: How do you
feel the success rate will be compared to the success of the more Eurocentric view on the same
sex oriented series such as Queer As Folk and The
L Word?
Quincy: We are up against the same “colored
structured” success rate as any other black show
on television. Most white shows that are being
showed on popular channels such as HBO and
Showtime get heavily exposed to the public, so
they have no choice but to be successful. We do
know that there is a want for this series. Upon
the completion of the website in October, we have
gotten over 150,000 hits and that’s within less than
three months. So, there are people out there who
really want to see this series.
Tidus: Is there any last piece of advice you would
like to leave for a man on the DL who struggling
with similar internal conflicts as your characters?
Deondray: Just be honest, and this is to men and
women alike. Be honest with who you are and act
upon your own wishes. And if you continue to live
a DL life, just make sure not to involve innocent
people with your actions.
Quincy: Pretty much the same thing. Life is far
too short and many of us spend too much time
worrying how people see us. Become comfortable with yourself and comfortable around others.
Being comfortable with ourselves is very healthy
for our own emotional well being.
Tidus: I’d like to thank the both of you again before
I go. It’s an inspiration to see two gay black men
succeeding at something that they believe in.
Quincy: You’re very welcome; we had a really
good time. Later.
Deondray: Yeah, it’s cool to know that people are
really trying to find out more about series. Look
forward to hearing from FlavaLife again. Peace.

NFL
ROY
SIMMONS
COMES
OUT AND
COMES
CLEAN
By Rod McCullom
58 FLAVALIFE
Roy Simmons made history as only the second
pro-football player to come out of the closet.
Since then, his fortunes and behavior have
not been without controversy. In 1992, seven
years after being cut from the NFL, Simmons
announced his sexuality before an audience of
millions on Donahue. At the time, he was only
the second NFL player to come out post-retirement. (Dave Kopay came out in ‘75, and later,
Esera Tuaolo in 2002.) A decade later, the former Giants lineman revealed that he was HIVpositive, becoming the first pro-footballer to
do so. Just a few years ago, Simmons admitted that it was an addiction to cocaine that cost
him his pro-football career and forced him on
the streets to turn tricks. Much more recently
he has charged the NFL with discrimination.
Obviously, Roy Simmons has had more than
his share of bad luck and now, for the first
time, he reveals his entire story. Out of Bounds
is a tragic glimpse into a promising life and
career that was cut short by shame, greed and
fear. Unlike most celebrity autobiographies, it
reveals much more than it hides. And, at only
276 pages, you could easily read the memoir
in a day or two because it’s so compelling. Out
of Bounds has all the makings of a Lifetime
tearjerker.
At eleven years old, a neighbor raped him.
However, the boy returned to his abuser and
accepted cash for more sessions, rationalizing
that if he were paid for sex ... it was okay. By
his freshman year at Georgia Tech, Roy was
no longer in denial; he began frequenting sex
clubs near campus, knowing that exposure
could cost him his football scholarship. “I have
to admit that I was excited. Excited and very,
very curious.”
By the skin of teeth, Roy avoided detection
and was drafted by the Giants in 1979. New
York City’s sexual underground of the early
1980s was the perfect incubator to mature
his increasing appetite for sex and drugs. The
offensive lineman lead the classic double life,
appearances with women during the daytime
and having quick encounters with men during
the night. No one was the wiser. “It’s easy for
a gay person to hide out in the open when
everyone else in the world is convinced you’re
straight.” Naturally, his playing suffered;
Simmons admits to barely making practice or
playing while nursing a hangover.
“My gay side took a beating in the locker room
as far as my pride was concerned,” he writes.
“There I was surrounded by all these fine-looking men. Couldn’t have a single one of them.
Didn’t even want to think about it lest I give
myself away somehow.
However, Simmons was flirtatious with some
players, given to teasing and horsing with
defensive end Gary Jeter. “Jeter used to call
me “fat ass”, “cocksucker” and “faggot”,” he
recalls. “Looking back, I think he might have
known that I was gay.” However, soon the
games would end: “With all this sexual tension
in the air, it made things tough for me. Not
exactly uncomfortable, but definitely challenging.” Simmons gave in to the challenge during
his second year with the Giants when he had
his “first and only sexual experience with a
teammate.”
No names are mentioned but Simmons says
the player was on the offensive line. One night
they went out to a club in New York City, drank,
partied, dropped some Quaaludes—these was
the eighties—but the chemical combination
proved to be too much for the teammate. Roy
brought him home:
I sat down next to him and started running my
fingers over his forehead, just to comfort him.
His skin was hot, but at the same time he was
kind of cold and clammy. When I ran my fingers through his hair, he seemed to like that,
too. He shifted a little on his side and mumbled
some more. To make a long story short, he
asked me to suck his dick. I did.
There’s much more sex in the book and it’s
very descriptive. Simmons is painfully honest;
it seems that he usually took a passive role
in the drug-fueled encounters and has no
complaints.
Roy’s fairly undistinguished career with the
Giants came to an end after just a few seasons.
He says that he never gave his all to the game
for fear of “being put under a microscope” and
his secrets would be revealed. But the good
news: the Redskins drafted him. Playing with
them would be the zenith of his career—Super
Bowl XVIII when the team faced the Raiders
in 1984.
By that time, Roy Simmons was a train wreck.
He invited three lovers to the game—two
women, one man—and had them stay on
different floors of the same hotel. It was a
non-stop weekend of partying and sex and his
on-field performance reflected as much. After
the big game, he was cut from the team and
his life spiraled downhill—he throws his career
away for drugs, fathers a daughter that he
never really knows, escapes to San Francisco
to trick on the streets, attempts suicide, fails
rehab several times ... the story reads more
like the bio of a former circuit boy or porn star
than a promising sports hero. Particularly sad
is the fact that Simmons doesn’t even have
his Super Bowl ring because a trick stole it just
days after it was presented to him.
***Roy Simmons isolation was compounded
by the additional stigma of homosexuality
among black athletes. In the essay “Black Gay
Athletes,” Keith Boykin finds that many gay
black athletes who have come out of the closet
have not been welcomed. “Almost all of them
suffered through tragedy or controversy,”
Boykin notes.*** In contrast to Simmons’
lukewarm reception, Dave Kopay is somewhat
of an icon in the mainstream gay community,
and, Esera Tuaolo has been a poster boy for activists and sports fans. The latter’s book, Alone
in the Trenches, was just released on March 1.
Besides Simmons’ race, he is also an admitted
substance abuser, former hustler, and, carries
the unfortunate stigma of HIV. This is probably
not “the” preferred image of a professional
football player. That’s what Simmons claimed
on February 9, when he held a news conference with celebrity attorney Gloria Allred and
said that the NFL denied him entry to the
Super Bowl’s media center. Simmons charges
discrimination and adds that many of his former teammates were allowed access and free
tickets to the game. ““I was once part of the
inner circle — now I’m standing on the outside
looking in,” That certainly may be true—it’s
likely that the league wants him to fade into
history, but, that will never happen during a
book tour. On a recent segment of the “Howard Stern Show”, the radio shock jock provided
three names to Simmons—John Elway, Dan
Marino and Joe Montana—and told him that
he would have to play “kill, fuck, marry.” Simmons’ choices were: “Kill Elway. Fuck Marino.
Marry Montana.”
So what would he say if the choices were Tiki
Barber, Jerome Bettis and Michael Vick?
