Walk-a-thon pledge sheet
As usual, beagles were a big hit at the
Edmonton Pet Expo. Twenty beagles and
their people greeted enthusiastic patrons
on January 25 and 26.
Memorable event…. It’s not clear why anyone
would hold a dish of tortilla chips at arm’s
length by her side. But, being within easy
reach, Casey just couldn’t pass up the
opportunity to help herself.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on
your point of view, the woman didn’t notice
and went on her way, none the wiser. We’re
not sure if she noticed the left-over chips had
a peculiar flavour, courtesy of Casey!
Many thanks to:

For the volunteers and supporters of Alberta Beagle Paws
April 2014
Beagle Paws was in two places at the same time in mid-April.
We were pleased to once again be asked to
participate in the Morinville & District Chamber
of Commerce Leap Into Spring Expo, April 11-13.
Each spring we look forward to introducing
beagles to Morinville-and-area residents.
Bundles of thanks to:

Annually throughout April, PetValu hosts PAW across Canada. Each store sells paper paws for
donations, which are then presented to local rescues. Edmonton Beagle Paws is ecstatic to be
selected the charity of choice for Namao Centre PetValu.
Anybody who doesn't know
what soap tastes like never
washed a dog.
Beagle Paws attended the Namao Centre PetValu-hosted adoption days, April 12 and 13. This
was an opportunity for customers to meet our foster dogs and learn more about who will benefit
from their donations.

FEATURED FOSTERS
Sheldon
I’m Sheldon (or lucky Sheldon as I’m known to
friends). As much as I love my foster family, I’d
really love a forever home.
To foster, adopt, donate or
volunteer, contact us:

I’m a sweet beagle mix with lovely soft, silky hair.
I love walks and hanging out with my people. My
amazing personality and temperament makes
everyone smile. Plus, I’m good with other dogs
and children. What more could you ask for?

Mattie
I’m Mattie a first-rate kisser and champion
tail-wagger. A confident beagle mix, I’d
love a home with another polite dog to
keep me company. I’m good with most
dogs and older children. I walk well on a
leash, too.
Although I don’t like mornings and don’t
appreciate a rude awakening, I’m happy to
forget all that when it’s time to go to
doggie daycare.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Beagles have two goals in life – chase bunnies, or whatever else thrills their nostrils with scent, and
eat as much as they can. So how can you keep your beagle safe?

At home: Trainers will tell you to just train your beagle not bolt out the door. Being a bit
paranoid, I wouldn’t trust a beagle as far as I could throw one. A more secure solution is to
keep a leash handy on the door handle or on a hook nearby so you don’t forget to leash your
hound before opening the door to friends and guests.

In the car: If your beagle loves car rides, and most do, you might invest in a restraint for him.
Some harnesses can be used with seatbelts. Another option is to put a knot in the leash near
the leash handle. After Snoopy is safely inside the car, close the door with the knot and
handle on the outside of the door. This will prevent Snoopy from jumping onto the front seat
and your lap or bolting when a door is opened.

Outdoors: You’ve taken steps so Snoopy is safe under your supervision. But be sure your
yard is escape-proof, too. Check there are no gaps in the fence or spaces under which he can
dig or crawl. And secure the gate with a spring and latch to prevent it from accidentally being
left open.
Despite all the “checks-and-balances” you’ve taken to keep your
beagle safe, he or she may still manage to escape your care.
That means frantic hours searching hither and yon for the
wayward hound. Aside from racing around in panic, fearing the
worst, there is help for you out there.


Ensure your beagle is microchipped and licensed, and is wearing a tag with your contact
information, (i.e., phone number, pet’s name). It’s gratifying when someone calls, having
found your dog.
Try to stay calm.

Happy Easter,

Beagle Paws.


Do a quick search of the neighbourhood, including the back alleys. Beagles often leave a
trail of over-turned garbage cans. Talk to neighbours to see if they have seen your dog.
Post on PetLynx (http://www.petlynx.net/), an online 24-hour-a-day listing of “found pets”.
If you register your pet, you’ll be emailed automatically whenever a matching “found animal”
is entered into the system. Note: Edmonton Animal Care & Control no longer posts photos of
dogs on its website. Go to PetLynx for a list of “found animals”.
Contact your local veterinary clinic and emergency clinic. Ask a friend or family member
to do this so you can continue your search.
Check websites like Kijiji and Craigslist, where “found pets” are often listed.
See if your pet is at Edmonton's Animal Care & Control Centre (13550 - 163 St.).
Organize a formal search with family and friends. Bring your dog's favorite toy or another
noise-making item. Dogs hear sounds from far away and may come for a comforting sound.
Shaking a treat bag can help, too.
Bring a friendly dog with you on your search. Social creatures, your dog will be attracted to
the dog companion with you. If you see your dog, do not chase him. He may become
frightened or playful and run away. Instead, coax him toward you with toys, treats or your
dog companion, and talk in a soft voice (as you would with a young child). Be happy to see
your dog. An angry voice will make him less inclined to come to you.
Intensify the search after your dog has been missing for 24 hours. Prepare and place
posters around the neighbourhood. Enlist friends and family members to help distribute
flyers door-to-door. Don’t forget to check under steps and outbuildings.
Don’t give up. Dogs have been re-united with their owners after a year or more. Keep
checking shelters, bringing photos of your dog. Be persistent until a reliable conclusion
has been made. Who knows, maybe your dog will find you!

IN MEMORIAM
Mac Davison
Mac, beloved companion of Harry and Norrie
Davison, was called to the Rainbow Bridge
following a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
A friendly, social little soul, he was always
more than happy to be an official beagle
greeter at many of the Beagle Paws-sponsored
events.

God’s Garden
God looked around His garden
And He found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your precious face.
He put His arms around you
And lifted you to rest;
God' s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering.
He knew you were in pain.
He knew you'd never ever
Get well on earth again.
Bagel

Sweet foster dog Bagel earned his angel wings
safe in the arms of Beagle Paws volunteer May
Sutherland on February 8. He was a happy, joyful
little soul and was much loved. He is missed. Soar
high and free little dog.
Thank you to Dr. Rachael Spence and the
staff at General Veterinary Hospital for their
kindness and compassion towards Bagel.
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, "Peace be thine";
Then He took you up to Heaven
With hands so gentle and kind.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God welcomed you home.
Casey Shimura-Lysak
Casey came to Calgary July 2013 when his
family, on Vancouver Island, moved into
long-term care.
He was a sweet, gentle spirit. His favourite
past times were walks, snuggling on the
couch and sleeping.
Casey could make any spot comfortable
enough for a nap but he was often found
curled up under the bed sheets.

Although a picky eater, Casey loved to play
with his treat-filled Kong. Always up for
new adventures, he never failed to greet
someone at the door, regardless of how
settled in bed he was! Casey loved the
attention of children and was polite to
every dog he met. He was tolerant of
puppies, large and small, and kind and
gentle to them all, even when teaching
them manners.
This handsome little gentleman melted
hearts and filled his foster homes with calm
affection and love. Sadly, his time with us
was limited. He passed away due to kidney
failure only a week-and-a-half after finding
his forever home. Our deepest sympathies
to those he touched along the way,
especially his new adoptive family whose
time with him was all too short. Words
cannot express our appreciation as they
stood by him, while their hopes and plans
took such an unexpected turn.

Casey was the perfect example of why seniors are so wonderful. He is greatly missed.
Apologies
We extend our sincere apologies to Dayle Kichula and family for the incorrect spelling of their name
in the January issue of the Beagle Bugle.
ETCETERA
Help increase child safety with dogs
Doggone Safe is a non-profit organization dedicated to dog-bite prevention. Its mission is to
promote education initiatives to prevent dog bites, increase child safety around dogs and to
provide support for dog-bite victims.
Its Be a Tree program, a dog-bite prevention program for school-age children, focuses on fun and
interactive activities to teach children how to read the body language of dogs, and act safely
around their own dogs and dogs they don’t know.
More than half a million children have experienced the program, which has the support of
veterinary medical associations and veterinary technician/technologist associations. If interested in
becoming a Be a Tree presenter, visit Doggone Safe’s website (http://www.doggonesafe.com/).

Donations could keep pets safe in homes
Many low-income families love their pets but may find it difficult to feed them. This sometimes
results in abandoned pets or pets being surrendered to local shelters or rescues. To avoid these
unfortunate situations, the Pet Food Bank of Parkland County is asking for donations, which can be
made to the Pet Food Bank of Parkland County or The Bone & Biscuit in Spruce Grove. For more
information, phone Brenda Martin at 780.960.0426.
The Pet Food Bank of Parkland County has also opened a permanent rewards fund at the Bank of
Montreal in Spruce Grove. Donations contribute to rewards for anyone who steps forward with
information that leads to arrests and convictions for animal cruelty.
Requesting your support for Building for Beagles, saving lives
The rental space at NL Beagle Paws (http://www.beaglepaws.com/about/beagle-paws) is limited
and is not properly set up to house dogs. As a result, a significant portion of our hard-earned
fundraising dollars pays for expensive boarding fees to keep up with the intake of beagles
needing assistance.
The current facility is for sale and a move is impending. By renting another facility we risk
increasing rental rates or eviction from sale of the property. Owning our own shelter would allow
us to look to the future with more certainty and confidence. With that in mind, Beagle Paws has
recently launched a drive, Building for Beagles (www.buildingforbeagles.com), to build a Beagle
Paws’ Adoption and Education Centre – a place of our own where we can increase our capacity to
care for lost and abandoned beagles, provide proper care for beagles in need, and further our
education initiatives.
We’re delighted that Beagle Paws’ supporter and adoptive beagle dad, Lorne Durnford, is raising
funds for this campaign. He’s creating a team to run in the annual Tely 10 race in St. John’s, NL
and is looking for sponsors. Money raised will be donated to the Building for Beagles fund.
To sign up and support Lorne and Beagle Paws, check him on Facebook at

ABOVE AND BEYOND
Rescue for dogs entails warm beds, food for empty bellies, veterinary care and a safe, loving home.
Thanks to the amazing people that have come to “my” rescue we are able to provide the care they
need.
Bagel came to Beagle Paws in April 2012 from Edmonton Animal Care & Control, as a stray.
At 14, with no family, he was considered “unadoptable” (i.e., too old) by the Edmonton Humane
Society. So Beagle Paws offered Bagel a foster home. Eventually incontinence became a problem.
Then his health seriously declined. His foster mom found it difficult to continue to care for him.

Enter Dawn Lundquist and Linda Unrah. With their help, Bagel spent his last days in a warm, loving
home. It’s difficult to find the words to express my gratitude to Dawn and Linda for their kindness,
concern and compassion. Caring for a dying dog can be a heart-wrenching experience.

So to Dawn and Linda, my heart-felt gratitude. When his time had come, I asked Bagel if he
was taking a part of my heart with him or if he was leaving a part of his heart with me. I think
this sweet little dog has taken many hearts with him and has left a piece of himself with all of
us.
Although April 6-12 was National Volunteer’s Week, we express our sincere appreciation to the
many volunteers and foster homes that make Edmonton Beagle Paws such a huge success.
