Very nice weather with the exception of the last 10 minutes where we got some much needed rain. Our hats are off to a core group of 26 players that have participated in at least 60% of the tournaments. 15 players have shown up for at least 4 of the 5 tournaments. With this commitment we have a good foundation to grow from. 1st Place Tom Cusumano, Don Wright, Michael Rogers, Richard Rodgers As football season arrives it tends to be the time for a lot of golfers to put away their clubs until next year. One of our goals this year has been to finish strong . We scheduled our last two tournaments so that we would not conflict with the Razorbacks. We have a nice group of players competing for Top Ten awards so we do expect some good competition for the last two outings. And finally, the Top Ten standings are really tight, led by Mike Taylor and KW Donelson. By the way, if Mike loses by a point he will look back to the bogey we had on number 8 in the middle of a thunderstorm. 2nd Place Carl Brown, Jack Hood, Jim Woodward, KW Donelson 3rd Place Colby Garrett, Steve Jones, Richard Bost, Craig Buckman Our Top Ten Leaders are: Mike Taylor 27.5 pts Duke Clement 22.5 KW Donelson 27.5 pts Tom Cusumano 21.5 pts Congrats to the following golfers who placed in our August Don Wright tournament. 24 pts John Swenson 20.5 pts Hugh MacKay 23.5 pts Steve Jones 20.5 pts Craig Buckman 22 pts Doug Neely and Todd Riechen 19.5 From Jay Randolph, CGCS The previous update for the Central Region discussed the importance of venting greens to prevent the further loss of roots. Minimally invasive forms of cultivation like venting will continue to be extremely important as summer begins to heat up. In addition, take the extra time to closely monitor the density and depth of the root system and make adjustments to automatic irrigation and hand watering accordingly. Finally, fall is around the corner. This summer has been one of the most difficult in the last 25 years. It was definitely the hardest in my 15 years at the club. The last time we lost any grass on the greens was in 2010 and this year was even harder on the greens. The whole state has battled and I know every superintendent is glad to see September here at last. The greens have been seeded and we will be cautiously growing them in over the next month. Shallow-rooted turf is notoriously unforgiving during periods of very hot weather, and only a few hours of moisture stress I have included an article from the United States Golf Associa- can spell the difference between live grass and dead grass. No tion that explains a lot of what happened to many golf cours- doubt, the table is set for extensive turf loss should Mother es in the state. No roots and disease really took its toll this Nature decide to add triple-digit temperatures to this season’s mixture of quirky weather patterns. year. Frequent heavy rainfall across the central U.S. has become Source: Bob Vavrek (rvavrek@usga.org) much more than an inconvenience, it’s gotten to the point where only 0.25 inch of rain turns a golf course to mush because the soil is constantly at or near field capacity. Important sources of revenue from outside events and cart fees are practically impossible to recover later in the season once they are lost. Turf is beginning to suffer as much as the bottom line. Turf roots need oxygen, and a considerable amount of root die back has been observed in chronically saturated putting greens during recent Course Consulting Service visits. Sandbased greens have fared somewhat better than soil-based, push-up greens, but all greens are slowly drowning to one degree or another. Thank you for all of your support! Hope to see you out on the course, Jay Randolph, CGCS Certified Golf Course Superintendent 4 September in the Bar Happy September Everyone! House Wine ~Excluding Specialty Drinks~ Last day for Pool and Cabana is Labor Day, September 7th 5 From the Desk of, Gary Carmack: I would like to welcome all our new members that have come on board with us in the month of August. We usually don’t pick up many new members in August. We usually lose members this time of the year. However, at the time of this writing, we have a net gain of six. So, thank you for becoming a member of our little family. Just a reminder, the pool will be closed after Labor Day. The Club house and the course will be closed Tuesday the 8th after Labor Day. The Club would like to thank Roy Holland for purchasing two new fan motors for the Club. And thanks to Jim King for getting the motors at a very reasonable price. We still have some oscillating motors that need to be replaced. We are hoping to have them replaced before next season. We would like to recognize Mike Taylor for his expertise in getting our two water fountains on the course working again. Thanks Plum. Thanks to everyone that does those little things that no one knows about in helping the Club to succeed. Keep up the good work. We have a new trial menu coming out and would like to have your input before we finalize it in October. Please come by, try some of the items, look the whole menu over and give us your input. This is your Club and we want to serve you what you like to eat at a reasonable price. We appreciate your help. Things are slowly getting better but we are still not there yet. We still need help with Club utilization and membership growth. Please keep us in mind when planning parties and functions. Let your friends and neighbors know that you can help them have a party or function at the Club. At least give us a shot at trying to help you or your friends. “If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends. If an egg is broken by an inside force, then life begins. Great things happen from the inside.” – Jim Kwik REMINDER: The pool will be closed after labor day, September 7th. Splash while you still can!
