I hope this note finds everyone doing well as we edge out of the summer months and inch our way into the fall. We have lots to celebrate this month in my house. Many birthdays exist which is always fun. Especially now that we have four grandchildren to play with and one more on the way! Speaking of grandchildren, this year, National Grandparents Day falls on September 11th. What a day of mixed emotions. I will certainly take time to remember those we tragically lost at the World Trade Center. I will also take time to honor my maternal grandparents as well as my parents, who could not have provided a better role model to my children. I also think so highly of those close to me who provided the guidance and love during my upbringing. Lastly, but just as important, I will honor all of our residents, who have, and continue to, nurture me in my role as an Executive Director as well as provide me with guidance in life itself. I have such fond thoughts of my maternal grandparents. My grandmother on my mother’s side resided in Lake Crystal, MN. A widow, she traveled during the winter months with her sister, my great-aunt Maude. Typically, they would spend their winters in Long Beach with other widows from small-town Minnesota. I’m not quite sure how they all found the same complex on Ocean Blvd but was amazed how these farmer wives all came together to spend their time on the beach, year after year! It was such a wonderful childhood to have the ability to spend winters with a grandmother who normally I would only see each summer. This is difficult to explain, however there is something about being raised around card playing seniors that makes you feel bad for those who missed out. During these games, I was told about secret family recipes, things that made my grandfather blush, childhood antics my mother participated in, and stories how the family farm was purchased off of several nuggets of gold found here in California. Our own children were raised playing the same card games, (continued on next page...) My parents would spend these weekly game nights reciting many of the same stories I heard as a child. Two of my three children are now working in the senior living industry, as well as one son-in-law who also spent hours at the card table with my mother. Not sure what happened to son #2 as he went into the sheet metal business – however, I must add, he was always the “cheater” in these games! I wish you all, whether you have grandchildren or not, a wonderful “Grandparents Day” as I know that each one of you have touched the hearts of many during your lifetime. I know that you continue to touch mine, each and every day. Circle of Friends News... This month, our Circle of Friends residents continued learning and partaking in new, fun things like making dragonflies from beads and pipe cleaners to designing and creating individual leis in celebration of our festive Hawaiian luau party. We are excited to be introducing music and rhythm into our regular programming by adding visits from a music therapist to lead the residents in a sing-along and also by adding rhythmic therapy in the form of a drum circle--also lead by a music therapist. Circle of Friends residents were able to pose with the stars during their visit to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood, explore rich aviation history at The Museum of Flying in Santa Monica and partake in excellent Italian fare with a lunch outing to Carmine’s Italian Restaurant in Arcadia! Last month, residents had a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway and breathed deeply of the salty sea air when we parked with a view of the beach. Residents also had a fin-tastic local lunch outing to Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill. This month, residents will reach out to the community by touring the Burbank Fire Department Head Quarters, which will offer them the unique opportunity to meet our firefighters and gain a greater understanding of what they do through a demonstration. We have a lunch outing on the first Saturday and park outing on the third Monday of each month. Please contact us if you have suggestions for future outings! From DRCS Tammy Cooper Hydration and the Elderly Dehydration is a frequent cause of hospitalization of older adults; it can precipitate emergency hospitalization and increase the risk of repeated stays in the hospital. Why are the elderly more susceptible to dehydration? As we get older, body water content decreases by approximately 15%. With this decrease, the body becomes more susceptible to dehydration from the loss of a small amount of body water. The risk for dehydration increases, and the consequences become more serious. The elderly often experience diminished thirst sensation which leads to a reduced fluid consumption. Dehydration has also been associated with impaired cognition or acute confusion, falling or constipation. Incontinence can also increase water losses and the use of diuretics also causes dehydration. Prevention is primarily based on ensuring adequate fluid intake. • Offer fluids regularly during the day. • Make liquids readily available all day by placing containers such as small bottles of water. • Encourage consumption of fluids with medication. • Provide preferred beverages. • Prescribe and safeguard a minimum intake of 1.5 L in periods of increased risk for dehydration.
