Game 11 - vs. Sacred Heart - Dec. 11, 2011
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
• The Pioneers have had a rough go of it in 2011-12,
posting a record of 1-14-1 coming into the week. Sacred
Heart plays Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., Friday night
before making the trip up I-91 for Sunday’s tilt with the Big
Green.
• With just one win in their first 16 games overall, the
Pioneers have also struggled against Atlantic Hockey
competition. Sacred Heart is 0-10-1 thus far against league
opponents, including a 10-4 loss to Robert Morris in its
most recent contest on Saturday, Dec. 3.
• The team’s lone win was arguably the biggest upset of
the college hockey season as it knocked off Yale, 7-6, at
Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. Sophomore
Chad Filteau broke a 6-6 tie with 4:14 left in the third
period to complete the early-season stunner.
• Junior Eric Delong and senior Matt Gingera are tied for
the team lead with 13 points this season with freshman
Brian Sheehan close behind with 12. Gingera’s eight goals
are tops on the Pioneers, while Delong and Sheehan each
have a team-best seven assists.
• Sunday marks just the fifth meeting all-time between
the two programs. The first came between Dartmouth
and Sacred Heart’s club team on Dec. 13, 1937 in a game
played in Hanover. The two last met on Dec. 13, 2009 with
the Pioneers taking the 4-1 win.
BREAK IN THE ACTION
Sunday’s game will be the first for the Big Green since a
5-3 loss at Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 27. The 13-day break
is the second longest respite of the season with 18 days
between games after the contest with the Pioneers and
hosting Holy Cross in the Ledyard Classic on Dec. 30.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth held a one-goal lead in the third period, but
could not hold off Vermont in the final 10 minutes in its
last game played, falling, 5-3, at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The
line of sophomores Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) and
Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) and senior Doug Jones
(Marietta, Ga.) combined for seven points (3g/4a) in the
nonconference loss.
ROBINSON’S CAREER YEAR
Coming into the season, Robinson just had three-career
goals to his credit in a Dartmouth sweater. This season, the
sophomore winger has five markers, including three in the
last two games. He scored once at home against Harvard
on Nov. 25 before potting two against the Catamounts
in the team’s last game. Robinson is currently tied with
freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) for the team lead
this season.
LINDBLAD DISHES OUT THREE
At Vermont, Lindblad had a Big Green season-high three
assists. He was a part of both Robinson goals and was also
credited with a helper on Jones’ second of the season
exactly four minutes into the third. It was the second
three-point game of the season for any member of the
team as junior Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ontario) had a
goal and two assists against Princeton on Nov. 5. The three
points matched a career high for Lindblad, who twice had
three in a game during his freshman season (both 1g/2a).
SPEAKING OF MULTI-POINT GAMES
Dartmouth had three players with multiple points at
Vermont. The season high for the Big Green in 2011-12
was four players with multi-point efforts on Nov. 4 against
Quinnipiac. Freshmen Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario)
and Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) along with Robinson
and Dustin Walsh all had two points as the Big Green came
from behind to beat the Bobcats, 5-4.
JONES GOES BACK TO BACK
For the second time in as many games, Jones found the back
of the net against Vermont. He scored his first goal of the
season two days before in the match-up with Harvard after
failing to score in the first six games of 2011-12. The last
time Jones had goals in consecutive games was last season
against UConn (Jan. 11) and New Hampshire (Jan. 15).

DOUBLE-DIGIT POINTS
In all, Dartmouth players racked up nine points against
Vermont. The team’s season high of 13 came in that Nov. 4
win over Quinnipiac.
NYCHOLAT ON THE SCORESHEET
Northeastern transfer and senior defender Dan Nycholat
(Calgary, Alberta) picked up his first point as a member
of the Big Green with a third-period assist on Jones’ goal.
Nycholat was credited with the helper after pushing the
puck to Lindblad in the neutral zone, who, in turn, fed the
puck to Jones for the goal. But since, Nycholat had gone off
for a line change after making the pass, he was not on the
ice for the goal and was not credited with a plus.
HOMECOMING
Junior winger Jason Bourgea (South Burlington,Vt.)
returned home to the Green Mountain State for the
match-up with the Catamounts. It marked his first college
game in the state and against his hometown team. With
family and friends in attendance at Gutterson, Bourgea
picked up his second assist of the season, knocking back a
loose puck into the slot to set up Robinson’s second goal
of the game.
998 AND COUNTING
Coming into the season, the Big Green needed just six
wins to reach 1,000 wins in program history. A skid of 1-41 over the last six games has put reaching that mark on
hold for a bit, but a three-game homestand in December
might allow for the milestone win to happen on Thompson
Arena ice.
STAY OUT OF THE SIN BIN
Entering the week, Dartmouth’s figure of 9.9 penalty
minutes per game rank as the third fewest by any ECAC
Hockey team this season and the sixth fewest in the nation.
Sacred Heart ranks as the second-worst team in the nation
on the power play as they are 5-for-79 (6.3%) with the
man-advantage. Dartmouth is just ahead of the Pioneers in
this category, going 2-for-31 (6.5%) on the season.

Game 11 - vs. Sacred Heart - Dec. 11, 2011
In 23 seasons as a head coach, including the last
14 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and
developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight
former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL
teams in 2010-11, while several more played in
other professional leagues such as the AHL.
Gaudet returned to Dartmouth in 1997 after
nine successful seasons behind the Brown
University bench.
In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made
huge strides to return to national prominence.
Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in
the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the
ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J.
At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning
seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in
2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s
fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened
in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight
home playoff series and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the
ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St.
Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 206-196-50.
Gaudet’s career coaching record stands at a respectable 299-338-81.
The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth
captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The
2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet
was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the
second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a
finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had
two Ivy League players of the year Mike Ouellette earned the honor
in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was
also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that
distinction.
Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went
about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one
of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed
in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in
’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his
return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big
Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third
in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07.
During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League
champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first
NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist
for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year
in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just
one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent
much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls.
Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year
tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all
aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian
Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity
goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his
first season in Hanover.
Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four
productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980,
Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA
Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient
of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to
Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record
2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goalsagainst average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful
campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career
shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First
Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of
the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie.
Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the
Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor
league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a
knee injury cut short his promising career.
In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East
team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he
served again as head coach of the East team, and also coached the East
All-Star Team in the East-West Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet
spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select
16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in
Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly.
Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim will be
competing as a senior on this year’s team.

USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll
FAST START
Dartmouth scored just 1:07 into its game at St. Lawrence.
A Saints’ penalty 14 seconds into the game allowed the
Big Green to play with the man-advantage early and senior
Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ontario) capitalized with his
second of the season. The last time Dartmouth scored a
goal in the first two minutes of a game was also against St.
Lawrence last Feb. 25 when then-freshman Eric Robinson
(Foxboro, Mass.) found the back of the net 1:25 into the
first period at Thompson.
O’NEILL’S SOLID WEEKEND
Senior goaltender Jody O’Neill (Nepean, Ontario) played
well in his first two appearances of the season over the
course of the first road weekend. Starting for the first time
since Dec. 31, 2010, (ending a streak of 27-straight starts
by fellow senior James Mello), O’Neill stopped 20 shots to
earn the win against St. Lawrence. He started the next night
against Clarkson, marking consecutive starts for the first
time since the 2010 Ivy Shootout to open last season. He
stopped 27 Knights’ shots in a loss.
PEANLTY KILL
The Big Green’s two opponents on the first road trip were
a combined 1-for-7 on the power play. The Saints were
1-for-2 in a game that featured just five total calls. Saturday
night saw Dartmouth’s PK unit come up big as it killed all
five Clarkson power plays in the game.
LINDBLAD LIGHTS THE LAMP
Sophomore Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) scored his first
of the season on Nov. 18 at St. Lawrence. It took five games
played this season for the second-year forward to find the
back of the net after scoring 13 as a freshman. From the
corner freshman Eric Neiley (Warminster, Pa.) fed a pass
out through the slot to Lindblad crashing the net for the
one-timer high over the St. Lawrence goalie’s glove.

100 GAMES
The game with Harvard marked the 100th game in the career of senior defender
Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.). Doug Jones reached the century mark earlier in
the season and has 104 right now. Fellow senior Jim Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) is next on
the list as he currently has played in 96 career games to date.
FRESH FACES
With a team that features ten seniors, Dartmouth is getting a good deal of scoring
from its younger players. This season, eight members of the team have registered
their first-career points. Against St. Lawrence, both Charlie Mosey (Prior Lake,
Minn.) and Rick Pinkston (Trenton, Mich.) joined that club with assists in the 3-1
win. Freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) scored his team-leading fourth goal
of the season in the game and ranks second on the team in scoring with six points.
Fellow freshman Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario) also collected an assist
against the Saints, his third.
FAMILIAR FOE
Dartmouth and Vermont have a long history dating back to the 1930-31 season.
Former ECAC Hockey travel partners, the two programs have played 77 times
including the most recent tilt. The six times (3-3) the two played during the 200405 season is the most against any opponent in one season in the 106-year history
of the Big Green men’s hockey team. That year, the two played two regular season
games, once in the Ledyard National Bank Classic and three times in the ECAC
Hockey postseason.
SUNDAY FUNDAY
The match-up with the Pioneers is just one of two scheduled Sunday games
this season. The Big Green played Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 27 in their last game,
but will not play again on a Sunday until postseason play if needed. In 2010-11,
Dartmouth was 1-1 in games played on Sunday, including a 6-5 loss to Vermont
at home on Dec. 12 and a 4-3 win over Harvard in the final game of the ECAC
Hockey Quarterfinals on Mar. 13.
SIXTH TO SCORE
Freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) scored the first power-play goal of the
season for the Big Green 15:05 into the first period against the Big Red. The goal
was the third for Sikura and was his first non-game winner this season.
FIRST GAME, FIRST POINT
Freshman defender Andy Simpson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was inserted into the lineup
for the first time this season against Cornell. Making his first collegiate debut in a
Dartmouth sweater, Simpson picked up his first-career point with an assist from
the point on Sikura’s first-period power-play tally.
