With another fantasy season upon us, a fresh challenge lies ahead with the launch of AFL Fantasy Elite, a draft-style game that will test even the best of coaches. The traditional salary cap competition remains, giving coaches the option to play one or even both in most cases. COLL Once again, with not every NAB Cup match televised, the pre-season competition will take on a greater significance. You can follow me on twitter and get exclusive updates from every match played. Enjoy this week's read and best of luck selecting your starting squad. RICH HOW% PORT F50% NTH GT% MELB Mt HAW Club GWS A change to the field stoppage rule also needs to be taken into consideration. Instead of the traditional bounce down, the ball will now be thrown up by the field umpire at all field stoppages. Ruckmen will not be allowed to make contact with each other until the ball leaves the umpire's hand, which will likely benefit the fitter ruckmen as they are able to cover the ground better than the lumbering type. To put this into context, a Nic Naitanui is likely to get to contests quicker than Shane Mumford. Player GCS Regardless of whether you're playing the traditional salary cap or draft style game, the table on the right can be used as a reference guide when selecting your ruckmen. Besides the obvious measure, points scored, there are several other factors that need to be taken into account when deciding. This includes game-time, percentage of disposals won inside 50 and percentage of ruck contests won. LEADING SCORERS IN 2012 GEEL The ruck department was ravaged by injuries last season with the likes of Shane Mumford, Aaron Sandilands, Patrick Ryder, Hamish McIntosh, Mark Jamar and Ben McEvoy all missing a considerable amount of time. That trend looks like continuing this season, with Nic Naitanui now a doubtful starter for the season opener as he continues his recovery from off-season surgery. In another major blow, Aaron Sandilands has already gone down with a hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined for up to two months if not longer. His fantasy stocks have plummeted since playing all 22 H&A games in 2008, recording 20, 19, 13 and 12 games in each year since. We all know that he's a prolific scorer when he plays, however his poor durability has to count against him now. Avoid him at all costs I say! FREM RUCK MERRY-GO-ROUND SYD WCE WB HOME ADEL PRE-SEASON REVIEW 2013 CHAMPION/DATA/ISSUE 1 BRIS FREAKO’S FINAL CALL ADEL P P Jacobs is as safe as houses. If Leuenberger stays fit then he's your man. Kreuzer will be No. 1 with Warnock providing relief. COLL No worthy options at Collingwood. ESS Hird has put his faith in the Ryder/Bellchambers combo. FREM GEE GCS Once fit McIntosh will be the No.1 ruck. Vardy too risky. P P HAW Giles is a super option yet again. No competition. Roughead to continue in his dual role. Hale will be the starting ruck. P If Jamar's body stands up then he's a decent option. Goldy's game-time will be impacted by Currie if he also plays. PORT Look elsewhere. RICH P Maric will carry the ruck load yet again. A safe pick. McEvoy may spend more time up forward with the arrival of Hickey. SYD Mumford is much cheaper than last season. Pyke his back-up. Minson has to come into calculations. Durable and solid. You can't go past Cox. Nic Nat will take time to get going. SYD WCE TOTAL MINUTES played for each player in the pre-season is provided as well to give the POINTS PER 100 MINUTES more context. The more minutes played in the pre-season the more realistic the POINTS PER 100 MINUTES is. Round 1 games were merged into one column given how short the games were and we have included a P1 column for the practice match played between Adelaide and Fremantle two weeks ago. If clubs decide to play a practice match in week 4 and Champion Data cover these games we will create another column (P2) to give you as much information as possible leading into the H&A season. STK As per usual we have provided a page per club with the DT scores from the NAB cup. Given we have two shortened games in Round 1 and then move to some normality in Rounds 2 and 3, we use the POINTS PER 100 MINUTES measure as a player's average for the pre-season. This is calculated by dividing DT points into minutes played and then multiplying this by 100. The AFL average of a player is around about the 100 minutes so this hopefully provides you with a more realistic DT average in the pre-season. RICH PLAYER TABLES PORT WCE P P NTH STK WB MELB NM HAW MELB Expect Smith to breakout this season. GWS GWS Griffin is an option early on with Sandilands out injured. GCS P GEEL CARL FREM BRIS Expectations ESS Club COLL To assist in making your decision, I have provided some insight into the ruckmen around the league. The players with the green tick of approval should be strongly considered for your starting squad. For what it's worth, I'll be starting with Dean Cox and Sam Jacobs as my two starting ruckmen, with Daniel Currie and Sam Rowe as reserves. But as we all know, this can all change before Round 1.
